Binghamton Police Department arrested 53 year old Stanley DeGroat of Binghamton and 47 year old Brett White of Binghamton, following a shooting. DeGroat was charged with Attempted murder, Criminal possession of a weapon, Criminal contempt & 4 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, White was charged with 8 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, following an incident Sunday, where DeGroat fired a shot that grazed the victim's hand, he fled the scene on a bicycle, he was located & taken into custody. Search warrants were obtained & executed at 2 locations, Officers found several rifles, shotguns, and 2 illegally possessed handguns, which led to White's arrest. Both face court action shortly, more charges may be forthcoming.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that the Trump administration dismissed its appeal of a court ruling striking down its blockade on wind energy development. In May 2025, James led a coalition of 17 other attorneys general in suing to block a presidential directive suspending all federal approvals for wind energy projects. In December 2025, the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts granted the coalition's motion for summary judgment, declared the directive illegal, and vacated the order.

New York Attorney General Letitia James called for the passage of the One Fair Price law, which would ban surveillance pricing in New York state. Surveillance pricing is when companies use algorithms to analyze consumers spending habits, and then determine the highest price they will pay for a product. James said that 2 neighbors could buy the same product at the same time but pay different prices, The package includes 2 bills, one for online shopping and one for traditional retail stores. The bills also ban the use of electronic shelf labels in grocery stores and pharmacies.
A heavy presence of emergency responders and volunteers from both New York and Pennsylvania are searching for 18-year-old Dalton Malmstrom, who was last seen leaving his residence near the Susquehanna River in the town of Nichols, at 7:45 am. Saturday, Family members told Police that he was not acting like himself prior to leaving. Dalton is described as a 5-foot-10 white male with dark hair and was last seen wearing a dark-colored shirt. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 42 year old August White of Broadalbin for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address, White was charged following an investigation where he relocated from a residence in the Town of Otego and did not make the proper notification to the Sex Offender Registry, an arrest warrant was applied for and granted through the Town of Middlefield Court. White was arrested by outside agencies on unrelated charges and remanded to several different correctional facilities. On June 10th, he was released from prison in to the supervision of New York State Parole Officers & was turned over to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office for Arraignment, he is expected to be held in Jail without bail due to prior felony convictions.

Attorney General Letitia James’ Office of Special Investigations released its report on the death of a man who died following an encounter with the State Police in Otsego County. On December 22 in 2021, a trooper responded to a call reporting a suicidal individual at an apartment in Unadilla. When the trooper arrived, he saw Mark Beilby Jr. holding a knife to his chest in the kitchen. The trooper tried to persuade him to drop the knife, Beilby refused, threw kitchen knives at the trooper, and the trooper shot Beilby in response, he was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. After an investigation, which included footage from body-worn cameras, legal analysis and interviews, the investigations office concluded that a prosecutor would not be able to disprove beyond a reasonable doubt at trial that the trooper’s actions were justified under New York law, criminal charges will not be pursued against the officer.

On Monday, Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol a responded to a 911 call regarding a dispute involving multiple individuals and a firearm in the Town of Fenton. 1 of the involved parties had been fighting with multiple individuals before leaving in a red Jeep and returning, patrols found 41 year old Matthew Penny of Chenango Forks, he ignored commands by patrols & drove off. Deputies learned of a female victim inside the residence had injuries from being hit by Penny’s vehicle, she was transported to Wilson Hospital. Deputies met Penny at his address in the Town of Fenton, , he was taken into custody & was charged with Reckless Endangerment, Assault, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, he was arraigned & was released & ordered to appear in the Town of Fenton Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 67 year old Eric Halstead of Candor, for Corrupting the Government & 3rd degree Grand Larceny, following an investigation by State Police with the Office of the State Comptroller. An investigation revealed that over several years while Halstead was Mayor of the Village of Candor, he withdrew over $23,000 dollars in cash from a Village account for personal use, Halstead replaced approximately $19-thousand dollars but still owes money to the Village of Candor. Halstead was arrested and Arraigned & he was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to appear in the Candor Town Court on August 5th.

Attorney General Letitia James & a coalition of 21 attorneys general, support a proposed Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives rule that would ensure more gun sales are subject to background checks. Following the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the ATF proposed a new regulation to clarify what it means for a person to be "engaged in the business" of dealing in firearms, and therefore required to obtain a license and run background checks when selling guns, that rule would close loopholes that allowed for the unlicensed sale of firearms, including online and at gun shows.

Attorney General Letitia James and DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos today announced a settlement with FrieslandCampina Ingredients North America, Inc. in Delhi over numerous violations of state and federal environmental laws. The Delhi manufacturing facility was emitting dangerous air and water pollution into the surrounding community, putting public health at risk. The agreement with Federal & State Agencies requires Friesland to come into full compliance with environmental protection laws and pay a penalty of $2.88 million. The Broome County Special Investigations Task Force executed a narcotics search warrant in the Town of Chenango, at the Comfort Inn on Upper Front Street. 42 year old James Konidis of Binghamton is accused of throwing a package of narcotics out of his 4th floor window in an attempt to hide or dispose of the drugs, investigators located 6.1 grams of Fentanyl thrown from the window, plus they seized methamphetamine as well as a scale for weighing narcotics from the room. Konidis was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Tampering with /Attempting to Conceal or Destroy with Physical Evidence, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Konidis was taken to Central Arraignment at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility for processing and arraignment.

The Mid-York Concert Band will present its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 2:30 PM in the Norwich High School Auditorium. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a one car Motor Vehicle Accident on Prospect Ave in the Village of Walton on October 17th. 31-year-old James Young of Walton was traveling north on Prospect Avenue when his vehicle exited the roadway and impacted a section of guidewire, Young’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and drugs at the time of the collision. Young was charged with Failure Maintain Lane, Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent, Driving while Intoxicated, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, and Aggravated Leandra’s Law DWI for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs with a child less than 15 years of age in the vehicle. State Police have arrested 28 year old James Haines of Richford after he fired a weapon in the direction of 2 troopers in the town of Richford, he then fled the area. Haines has been charged with 1st degree attempted murder with more charges pending. Troopers responded Thursday evening at around 6:30 to a residence on Light Road in search of Haines, who had been involved in a dispute in the village of Spencer. Troopers found Haines and he fired a weapon in the direction of the troopers then fled. No troopers were injured. Haines turned himself into police early this morning.

The Otsego County Department of Health continues to investigate a large outbreak of Coronavirus involving SUNY Oneonta students. 336 individuals were tested at the rapid testing sites on Wednesday in Oneonta, 3.5% of those tested were positive. accused of forcibly entering the residence and threatening the occupant with a

stated that the 2 men posed as utility workers, they forced their way into the
apartment at 80 Pennsylvania Avenue. The suspects were described as black, in
their early to mid-twenties. They were between five feet, seven-inches and five
feet, ten inches tall. Both wore all black clothing, orange-colored
construction safety vests and white construction helmets. Their faces were
covered with masks. Anyone with
