The State Police CNET Team, State troopers, Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and State DEC executed a search warrant at 163 Sherman Hill Rd in the Town of Afton, following an investigation into the sale of methamphetamine. 36-year-old Matthew Mazepa, & 21-year-old Taylor Quackenbush of Afton were arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance. Officers seized crystal methamphetamine, marihuana, Digital scales, drug packaging material cash & cell phones. Mazepa was arraigned in Afton Town Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail. Quackenbush was issued Appearance Tickets for Afton Town Court and released.
The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for October 2017. Locally, Chenango County's rate was at 4.7%, Delaware County at 4.8% & Otsego County at 4.3%. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.9% to 4.8% in October 2017.
Governor Cuomo announced the completion of a $1.7 million project to replace the State Route 28 bridge over State Route 7 and the Norfolk Southern Railroad in the town of Milford. The bridge opened to traffic today, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. The new bridge is a two-span structure supported by steel and concrete beams. It has 12-foot travel lanes and eight-foot shoulders in each direction. Approximately 5,200 vehicles use the Route 28 bridge each day.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a one-car roll over with property damage on Case Hill Road in Treadwell on November 6th. Deputies determined that William Rathbun’s vehicle left the roadway, entered into a ditch & rolled over and stuck a utility pole, which caused a minor power outage. Rathbun was ticketed for failure to keep right, speed unreasonable and prudent, & possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle. Rathbun will appear in the Town of Franklin Court at a later date.
The Afton Central School District Board of Education has invited 2 candidates to interview for the Superintendent position. A forum for each candidate will be held next week, with the forum with Daniel Erickson; who is the middle school principal in Johnson City, will be November 28th, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in the Afton Central School auditorium. Timothy McNamara is the principal in the Downsville Central School District; his public forum will be on November 30th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in the Afton Central School auditorium.
The State DMV, the DEC and the State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation are reminding New Yorkers to register their snowmobiles. Snowmobile registrations must be renewed annually, it can be performed online on the DMV website, by mail or in person at a DMV office. Last year, 106,867 snowmobiles were registered in New York.
The Oneonta Common Council will hold their next regular meeting this evening starting at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be held in the Common Council Chamber on the 2nd floor of Oneonta City Hall. The Oneonta clerk's office announced that City Hall would be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on both Thursday & Friday this week.
The Village of Bainbridge announced that there would be 2 public hearings in addition to the regular monthly Board meeting. The hearings are for the new Spectrum contract and the resolution for the Restore NY grant application. All residents are encouraged to attend this evening at 6:30 PM at 33 West Main Street.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to read the fine print on gift cards this holiday season for details about fees and expiration dates. DiNapoli said New Yorkers should use their gift cards within a year of purchase to avoid inactivity fees and register cards with the retailers that offer it so the owner can be identified. Money from unused gift cards issued by New York businesses is turned over to the State Comptroller’s office as abandoned property after five years of dormancy.

Participants can learn about the interview process; clarifying Interview questions; knowing your resume; selling yourself; anticipate questions and answering difficult questions. State Police responded to a report of shots fired on Algerine Street in Afton, at about 11:30 this morning. Troopers found one person with a Gunshot wound that required medical treatment, who was in police custody. The investigation is continuing. The Afton School district Superintendent Betty Briggs told WCDO News that the building was placed in "Lockout" following the reported shooting, but there was only staff and no students in the school today, due to a scheduled "Conference day".
State Police is currently investigating 2 burglaries that have occurred in Otsego County, 1 in the Town of Pittsfield and the other in the Town of Burlington. Both burglaries occurred on January 19th, and involved the theft of property from homes on County Highway 13 and State Route 80. Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Police at (315) 858-6014.
Governor Cuomo announced $14 million in Grants is available to protect soil and water resources on farms across New York State ram, to address water quality challenges on farms in watersheds across the State. The program complements the Governor's proposed $2 billion Clean Water Infrastructure Act of 2017, which would provide additional funding for source water quality protection initiatives, including projects to ensure proper management and storage of manure on farms across the State.
Governor Cuomo announced that 41 million dollars in Grants are available to cultural & Arts organizations around the state. The State Council on the Arts grants is awarded in 16 programs in all 62 counties in the state.

A new Siena research poll says Governor Andrew Cuomo's 2017 agenda is largely supported by New Yorkers. Cuomo maintains a 56 percent to 37 percent favorability rating, unchanged since late last year. His job performance rating stands at 45 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove -- also little changed from last month. Meanwhile, 47 percent of voters are ready to back the governor for a third term, a job Cuomo is seeking again next year.
State Police arrested 28-year-old Tammy Roe of Davenport for Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Menacing, after troopers responded to a dispute in Davenport. An investigation determined that during a verbal dispute with her ex-boyfriend Roe had threatened him while holding a knife. No one was injured. Roe was arraigned in the Town of Davenport and was released, pending court action on February 14th.
The Binghamton Senators have called a Press Conference for Tuesday afternoon at the Holiday Inn of Binghamton, they are expected to address the replacement team for the Senators, after Ottawa team officials announced that they are moving the their top Farm team out of Binghamton after this current season. Published reports out of Albany suggested that New Jersey Devils would be moving their farm team from Albany to Binghamton; an official comment is expected at tomorrow’s press conference.

Police seized items associated with one pot meth manufacturing, Arrested were Matthew Crowningshield, Heather Clark, Scott Doty & Andrew Kuhr. They were charged with Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Manufacturing Methamphetamine; they were arraigned and were remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.
State Senator Fred Akshar and Senator Chris Jacobs of Buffalo were appointed as the 2 new co-Chairs of the Senate's bipartisan Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction. The Task Force will again hold forums, meet with experts, and evaluate what further state measures are needed to reduce drug abuse.
The Harm Reduction Work Group is coordinating today's Medication Take Back Event. Residents are asked to remove outdated or unused prescription medications from their homes for safe disposal. Today's event will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the North Norwich Town Hall located on County Road 23. The program is in collaboration with The Chenango County Sheriff's Office and The Norwich City Police Department.
Law enforcement cell phone tracking devices are coming under scrutiny in several states, where lawmakers have introduced proposals ranging from warrant requirements to a ban on the technology. The devices mimic cell phone towers and allow law enforcement to collect unique subscriber numbers and other basic data from cell phones in a particular area, Law enforcement officials say the devices help to find suspects and victims, and to solve crimes. This year, lawmakers in at least 6 states are proposing bills to require warrants to use cell phone surveillance devices, including New York State.
The next Reunite Bainbridge Committee Meeting will be hold tonight at 7:00 PM at Bob's Diner. David DeClue, President of the Bainbridge Development Corporation, will be asking committee members and other interested parties to brainstorm ideas for potential uses of the Jericho Tavern if & when it is ever purchased. Also, the committee is looking to Form of a committee to explore places where murals could be designed.

A Binghamton man has been arrested for a shooting at the Clinton Hotel bar in the City of Binghamton early Saturday morning. Binghamton Police responded to a shooting at 20 Clinton Street, 1 victim had suffered a non life-threatening gunshot wound to his right leg. 39-year-old James Simpson was arrested a short time later, a loaded revolver was recovered. Simpson was charged with 1st degree assault & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Simpson was arraigned in the City of Binghamton Court and taken to the Broome County Jail.
Firefighters in Chenango County responded this afternoon to a structure fire at 389 Hunt Pond Road in New Berlin. The fire was called in shortly after 1:00 PM today, fire fighters from New Berlin & South New berlin responded.
Delaware County Sheriffs Deputies arrested 25-year-old Matthew Stevenson of Manorville, for DWI, after Deputies responded to County Highway 18 for a reported 1-car roll over motor vehicle accident. Deputies charged Stevenson with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle & several other traffic infractions. Stevenson was released with appearance tickets to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.
The Suicide Prevention Network of Delaware county is offering a free cup of coffee through Sunday at participating coffee shops, diners & restaurants, to get information on suicide prevention & depression. Program Spokesperson Rene Stratton explains:

Local participants include Wise Guys Pizza in Franklin, the Masonville General Store, as well as Trackside Dining; Treats and Eats & Roma restaurant & pizzeria in Sidney, Stratton said that suicide is the 12th leading cause of death nationwide, in Delaware county, middle aged men account for the highest number of suicides.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today announced that the income tax filing season officially begins on Monday, January 23. last year, 92% of New York taxpayers e-filed, this year, New York taxpayers with household income of $64,000 or less in 2016 can qualify to use Free File software, the Tax Department is hosting 54 Facilitated-Self Assistance sites throughout the State, each staffed by Tax Department experts. More information is available at tax.ny.gov/fsa.
This year, the state will require vehicles' window tint to be examined during a yearly State safety inspection. If the glass on a vehicle is tinted beyond 30 percent of light transmittance, then that vehicle would not pass the inspection. The window tint would have to be removed or altered for the vehicle to pass. The new law is a more proactive approach intended to protect law enforcement and other drivers, as darkly tinted windows hinder their ability to see inside the vehicle.

On January 8th, State Police pursued him on foot after they received a call for a car in a ditch on Shedd Road in Windsor; they recovered the stolen vehicle and pursued Markoff and a female acquaintance unsuccessfully through a wooded area. Police said that Markoff is believed to be with 31-year-old Angela Weyrauch of Hancock. Anyone with information can call State Police at 775-1241.
State Police reported that 46-year-old Paul Schwartfigure of Whitney Point has been located and is in good health. He was located in the area of Ford Hill Road and was returned to his family. Schwartfigure was reported missing January 10th, while riding a bicycle in Whitney Point.

Commissioner Samuel Roberts, of the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, will present remarks during the Call to Commemoration portion of the program. The public is invited to attend the free program in celebration of the 88th anniversary of Dr. King’s birth.
