Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Health Department provided the public with the latest update on the outbreak of Salmonella that hit the Broome County Correctional Facility. After 11 days, operations at Broome County Correctional Facility have largely returned to normal, Over 120 IV hydration treatments were conducted, 10 individuals were hospitalized, 8 have returned from the hospital, with 2 still receiving treatment. Broome County Health Department showed a positive result for Salmonella in sample of a chicken salad meal served on May 24th, no other meals have tested positive. The Health Department identified multiple violations related to food preparation and storage that could have led to the outbreak. Several of the violations identified are repeat violations that have previously been cited to the food vendor, particularly those involving the cooling of food, The Health Department found no issues with water quality at the Correctional Facility.


Delaware County sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Logan Coss of Grand Gorge for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated and Obstructing Firefighter Operations. On May 25th, Deputies responded to assist the Grand Gorge Fire Department and Town of Roxbury Constable at the scene of a vehicle fire, Coss is accused of attempting to obstruct fire fighters and police who were on scene. Coss was released on appearance tickets for Town of Roxbury Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Anthony Alessi of Walton for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal possession of a controlled substance, following a traffic stop at a check point in Town of Colchester,  Alessi is accused of being impaired & was found to possess cocaine, he was processed and was released on appearance tickets for Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

State Police are renewing efforts in the investigation into the homicide of Barry Marquart of Oneonta, a case that has remained unsolved for more than 45 years. Marquart was reported missing on November 9, 1980, by his father, he was 30-years-old and living in Binghamton with a roommate who reported not seeing him for 2 days. Marquart’s vehicle was located at a rest area off Interstate 81 in the town of Dickinson, His body was discovered in the Chenango River, about 500 feet behind the rest area, the autopsy determined the cause of death to be drowning but also indicated he sustained injuries consistent with blunt force trauma to his head and face. State Police are asking the public to look at a composite sketch developed in 1980 of a person of interest, at troopers.ny.gov; The white male would’ve been in his 20’s or 30’s in 1980, 5’ 10” between 140-160 lbs, The individual is not currently a suspect; has never been publicly identified, Anyone with information should call (607)561-7400 and ask to leave a message with Major Crimes.


The FBI announced that they will be rewarding anyone with information that leads to an arrest or conviction for a cold case murder that took place in Binghamton four years ago. 12 year old Aliza Spencer was shot and killed in April of 2022 as she was walking with her father and brother on Bigelow Street, A $50,000 reward for information was previously offered, the FBI have now made an additional offer of $50,000, Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to Binghamton Police Detectives at 772-7080 or to the FBI at 1-800 Call FBI.


Chenango County Grand Jury indicted Brandon Birch for Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, driving while ability impaired by drugs, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, Criminal possession of a controlled and reckless driving, on December 26th in Afton, Birch is accused of operated a vehicle on State Highway 7 while his driving privileges were suspended, he was impaired by fentanyl, fled State Troopers attempting a traffic stop, possessed fentanyl, and drove at speeds up to 90 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour zone. Birch faces additional court action on the indictment shortly.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 4 people on drug charges following the execution of a search warrant in the town of Chenango. The search led to the seizure of 19 grams of Methamphetamine, fentanyl, Suboxone strips, Illegal steroids, packaging material & a digital scale, arrested were 37 year old Brett Poyer, 36 year old Cassandra Angulas, both of the Town of Chenango, 45 year old Jack Langland, of Endicott, and 37 year old Daisy Odell of Wilesyville, all on numerous drug charges, all face court action shortly.

The State DOT posted an update this afternoon, stating that I-88 is closed for a 9.5-mile stretch between Exits 10 and 12 in both directions, with a detour along State Route 7 currently in place. State Police noticed atypical erosion along the highway embankment that could potentially compromise the safety of the road. Out of an abundance of caution, the highway was closed Tuesday, Engineers are exploring the cause of this erosion, and a contractor is mobilizing in anticipation of emergency repairs along the road. The highway will continue to be closed until our engineers deem it safe to reopen.


Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than $25 million is being awarded to 133 farms in 23 counties across the state through the Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program, for projects to help New York’s farmers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect water quality, protect and enhance soil health, in the Southern Tier, more than $3.7 Million Dollars has been awarded to 33 farms.


According to the latest Sienna Research Institute poll, Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul leads the Republican nominee, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman by a 47 to 34% margin among eligible New York Voters, the previous poll had Hochul leading by a 51 to 31% margin.


Butternut Valley Alliance, Morris Rotary, and Morris Central School are partnering for an Earth Day community clean-up and creek-side planting day on Saturday, April 18, from 10 am. to noon in the village of Morris. The Unadilla Fire Department announced an update on the I-88 Closure between Exit 10 and Exit 12. I-88 is currently closed westbound at Exit 12, to Exit 10, also the Route 357 bridge over the Susquehanna River is closed at this time, due to tractor trailers being unable to safely navigate the detour turn on to State Route 7. Motorists are urged to allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution while traveling along the detour on State Route 7.

The State DEC Announced that today is the Start of Trout Fishing Season. The DEC trout stocking is in full swing with more than 1.7 million catchable-size brook, brown, and rainbow trout stocked in waters across the state through early June. More information is available at the State DEC website.


The Binghamton Rumble Ponies will host their annual Meet the Ponies event at the Holiday Inn Downtown Binghamton Tonight at 5 pm at the Holiday Inn Downtown Binghamton. Sidney Police Department responded to a 3 vehicle head on collision Thursday Morning at about 10:20 AM on State Route 8 & River Street. Upon arrival, officers determined that a commercial Box Truck traveling southbound on State Route 8, was involved in a head-on collision with 2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. 1 driver sustained injuries and was transported by Lifenet to Upstate Medical University Hospital for treatment. The other two drivers were treated at Tri-Town Regional Hospital and subsequently released. The Sidney Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Sidney Fire Department, Sidney EMS, State Police & DOT, among others, The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.


51 year old Timothy Hoose of Berkshire, was sentenced today in Broome County Court following his conviction for Grand Larceny after a Jury Trial. Hoose was sentenced to a term of 2 to 6 years in New York State Prison, also the Court entered a Civil Judgment in favor of the victim. Hoose operated a business known as H&H Contracting, he entered into a construction contract with the victim to build a garage on the victim’s property, the victim paid a $15,000 down payment, Hoose illegally converted over $3,000 of those funds for other purposes unrelated to the project. Hoose further failed to provide the victim with an accounting and disposition of the trust funds despite a written request, as required by Law.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Ashton of Otego for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. The investigation revealed that Ashton, who is a level 1 sex offender, did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, he was arrested, processed and was released on an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date, he was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant.


Republican Candidate Terry Bernardo will hold a Meet & Greet with local voters, on Sunday from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM, at the Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney. Bernardo is running for the 51 State Senate District, seeking to replace Peter Oberacker, who has decided to run for Congress in the next election.

The budget totals 260 Billion dollars, lawmakers have until April 1st to get the budget passed by the beginning of the next fiscal year.


Chenango Health Network & Bassett Medical Center Research Institute, are calling on residents of Norwich and Sherburne to participate in a Community Health Survey, which is designed to gather comprehensive, confidential information to assess the community’s health status and needs. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who is a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that several of her priorities were included in the 2026 Energy and Water Development, Commerce-Justice-Science, and Environment funding bills. $11.75 million in funding will go to the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program to support wildlife, improve water quality, and enhance recreational access to the basin, $28 million was allocated to help New York households increase the energy efficiency of their homes and lower their energy bills.


43 year old Kaycee Spawn of Port Crane, was sentenced in Broome County Court following her guilty pleas in October. Spawn was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in Prison for possessing Dangerous Contraband in Prison, 4 years in Prison with 3 years Post Release Supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, the sentences will run consecutively due to her undischarged term of imprisonment resulting from a parole violation.


The Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced that Michael Collins takes over as the 19th manager in Binghamton team history. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office released the autopsy findings following the death of Chelsey Davis of Port Dickinson that occurred shortly after entering the Broome County Correctional Facility on October 8th. Davis’ cause of death was listed as “Chronic Alcohol Use with Hepatic Cirrhosis,” with contributing factors listed as “hemorrhaging pancreas and heart disease. The toxicology report found no alcohol or controlled substances in her system at the time of her death. Davis was remanded to the Correctional Facility by the Town of Chenango Court., after booking procedures, she received a full medical and substance abuse screening with Correctional Facility medical staff before being housed in the Medical Unit. Over the next several hours, Davis was seen by medical staff 2 additional times, she was not exhibiting any issues, 20 minutes after the third visit with medical staff, Davis experienced a medical emergency, staff administered CPR and a Defibrillator but were unable to revive her.


The State Department of Motor Vehicles will launch a new technology system, All DMV offices will close at 2:00 PM on Friday, Feb. 13, with online and phone services also unavailable during the transition. DMV operations are expected to fully resume at the start of business on Wednesday, February 18, People who need to renew a license or non-driver ID, or complete other transactions before February 13, are encouraged to use the online options on the DMV website.
