State Police & the Otsego County Sheriff's Department
responded to the report of a Tractor Trailer accident on I-88 Eastbound, at the
Milford & Maryland Town Line this morning.
No injuries were reported, the investigation is continuing.
The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to M.
Stanley Whittingham, who is a distinguished professor of chemistry and
materials science at Binghamton University.
Whittingham won the prize for pioneering research leading to the
development of the lithium-ion battery along with John Goodenough and Akira
Yoshino. Whittingham came to Binghamton
University in 1988 after 16 years at Exxon Research and Engineering Company,
where he received the patent for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The 3 winners will share a prize of $910,000.
The Catskill Area Hospice has changed its name to reflect

Governor Cuomo signed legislation prohibiting ambulance and
first response service providers from disclosing or selling private patient
information to third parties for marketing purposes. Under prior law, emergency
response providers could sell information that identifies an individual patient
such as addresses and phone numbers, prescriptions and medical history. The new
law prohibits the disclosure of such information to third parties, except to
healthcare providers, the patient's insurer and parties acting under
appropriate legal authority.

over the Memorial Day Weekend, with over 1000 paddlers from 22 states & 5
Canadian Provinces participating.
In the men’s NYMCRA stock Race, Mike & Wayne Himes of

Communities & Educators are looking at ways to curb
tobacco use & the use of fruit flavored E-Cigarettes like Juul, that are hooking
a whole new generation of people getting addicted to Nicotine. Linda Wegner of Advancing Tobacco Free
Communities of Delaware, Otsego & Schoharie Counties explains;

Wegner said that 1 Juul packet contains as much nicotine as
an entire pack of tobacco cigarettes and her group is continuing to try to
educate local residents not to be tricked into nicotine use & addiction.
An amended marijuana legalization bill was introduced on
Friday by lawmakers in Albany, which more closely echoes what Governor Cuomo
wanted in the bill earlier this year.
The bill includes the Office of Cannabis Management to regulate
commercial and medical marijuana; it would also expunge the records of those
who have committed marijuana-based offenses in the past. Opponents to Marijuana legalization site
potential issues with traffic safety and increased links to mental illnesses
such as Schizophrenia & violence.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies charged 40-year-old
Jeffrey Bosket of Tompkins with 2 counts of harboring a dangerous dog in
violation of Agriculture and Markets Law. The charge follows an investigation
where an individual was allegedly bitten by 2 dogs owned by Bosket in the Town
of Tompkins. Bosket was issued tickets and was scheduled to appear before the
Town of Tompkins Court at a later date to answer for the charges.
State Senator Fred Akshar released a new Community Voice
Survey on a proposal to end religious and any other non-medical exemptions for
vaccination for children attending school in New York State. All 50 states require that students be vaccinated
for diseases like measles, mumps, chicken pox and polio among many others, all
states allow exemptions for medical reasons, but 47 (including New York) allow
exemptions for religious reasons. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that measles was eradicated
in 2000; however 940 measles cases were reported nationwide this year, with
more than half of those reported in New York City & Rockland County. Akshar is asking his constituents to weigh
in on Senate bill S.2994 which would repeal all non-medical exemptions from vaccination
requirements for children; the survey is available at Akshar.NYSenate.Gov.
New York State will not be
funding a housing development with 64 units in Oneonta' 6th Ward. The RSS development announced their plans
last year, with residents speaking out about the plans to have some people in
the development recovering from substance abuse. Governor Cuomo recently announced that 6
organizations in The Southern Tier would receive $21.3 million in tax credits
and low-interest loans from the State Homes & Community Renewal’s 2018
Unified Funding applications; the Oneonta RSS project was not included.

workforce development event today aimed at business owners and managers who are
struggling to hire staff or have employees in drug and/or alcohol treatment and
recovery. Representatives from the
Delaware County Probation Department, Delaware County Drug Treatment Court, CDO
Workforce and the Department of Labor will participate, the session will be
held at 10:00 AM at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce at 5 1/2 Main

session on rising prescription drug costs in Binghamton Today. The event will include health care
professionals, seniors, and community leaders, at the Koffman Southern Tier

Attorney General Letitia James announced a settlement with
Oneonta Elks, over their wrongful use of over $480,000 charitable assets from
the estate of a benefactor whose last will and testament directed that the
funds be used to help the needs of children, people with disabilities, and the
elderly. The Oneonta Elks are required
to repay those funds, after the investigation determined that the Oneonta Elks
repeatedly appropriated and expended almost $170,000 to pay for capital
improvements to its lodge building and property, as well as covering general
operating expenses, rather than for the intended purposes.

refunds worth 43.7 million as of the start of the week. Many of the incorrect returns misrepresented income
or listed too many dependents. Dinapoli says
each year his staff uncovers more inventive tax schemes, forcing them to use
sophisticated data-driven methods to expose them. Tax day this year is Monday.
Measles
continues to spread in New York State with cases occurring in New York City,
Westchester County, Orange County, Sullivan County, and Rockland County.
Outbreaks are also occurring in the states of New Jersey, California,
Washington, and Michigan and several foreign countries. There have been no
cases of measles in Delaware County to date.

The City of
Norwich Spring Cleanup of yard debris will be coming soon. City officials stated that clear bags must
be used; Brush must be tied with string; branches and no longer than 6' or
3" inches in diameter. Debris must be placed between the sidewalk and the
curb. Pickup occurs in May, exact dates will be released shortly.
Community
events for the Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
begin tomorrow with a volunteer appreciation event from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon
at the shelter on State route 28 in Cooperstown. Volunteers and fosters are
invited to stop by for coffee, donuts in observance of National Volunteer

Arts Council hosted the 2019 Chenango Area Student Art Show, Lucy Funke and
Chenango Music Scholarship awards ceremony last Friday. The Lucy Funke

Dempsey of the Oxford Academy, the Chenango Music Scholarship goes to Matthew
Ryan of the Sherburne Earlville district, The Chenango Area Student Show
winners in a variety of categories were Riley Webster of Sherburne Earlville,
Guin Warren of Norwich, Ashley Spooner of Afton, Samantha Emerson of Oxford,
Shanee Baker Bush of Oxford & Madisyn Stowell of Sherburne Earlville. All eligible pieces will be entered in

entry will have a chance to be displayed in Washington for a year.
The Delaware
County Department of Public Works will be closing County Route 44 in the Town
of Sidney to through traffic on Monday at 7:00 am for bridge repairs. The road
will be closed at Bridge 44-1 which is located 0.25 miles north of the
intersection with State Route 357. It is
expected that the road will be remain closed until Friday, April 19th. The
detour will be Covered Bridge Road to State Route 357.
The Copes Corners Park Spring Fest committee for the Town of
Butternuts is soliciting craft, artist, product, and general vendors for its
5th annual Spring Fest on May 4th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The cost for a 12-foot by 12-foot space is

State Attorney General Letitia James will host a round-table discussion regarding the opioid epidemic in Binghamton this afternoon. James has invited local Elected Officials, Treatment Providers, Addiction Experts & Impacted Individuals. As New York
State Leaders consider making the recreational use of Marijuana legal across
the state, the New York Sheriff's Association, and other law enforcement
agencies are against that idea. Delaware
County Sheriff Craig Dumond commented on what happened in Colorado after they
became the first state to legalize recreational marijuana:

A study by
the American Journal of Psychiatry showed that people who use marijuana are 3
times more likely to use opioids; another study showed an increase in Psychosis
and schizophrenia among daily users, and states with recreational marijuana saw
a jump in murders & Aggravated Assaults attributed to its use.

annual Otsego County Conservation Association Earth Festival will take place on

The Chenango
Arts Council hosted the 2019 Chenango Area Student Art Show, Lucy Funke and
Chenango Music Scholarship awards ceremony last Friday. The Lucy Funke
Scholarship was awarded to Riley Webster of Sherburne Earlville & Andrea
Dempsey of the Oxford Academy, the Chenango Music Scholarship goes to Matthew
Ryan of the Sherburne Earlville district, The Chenango Area Student Show
winners in a variety of categories were Riley Webster of Sherburne Earlville,
Guin Warren of Norwich, Ashley Spooner of Afton, Samantha Emerson of Oxford,
Shanee Baker Bush of Oxford & Madisyn Stowell of Sherburne Earlville. All eligible pieces will be entered in
Congressman Anthony Brindisi’s Congressional Art Show in Utica; the winning
entry will have a chance to be displayed in Washington for a year.
The Delaware
County Department of Public Works will be closing County Route 44 in the Town
of Sidney to through traffic on Monday at 7:00 am for bridge repairs. The road
will be closed at Bridge 44-1 which is located 0.25 miles north of the
intersection with State Route 357. It is
expected that the road will be remain closed until Friday, April 19th. The
detour will be Covered Bridge Road to State Route 357.
The Copes Corners Park Spring Fest committee for the Town of
Butternuts is soliciting craft, artist, product, and general vendors for its
5th annual Spring Fest on May 4th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The cost for a 12-foot by 12-foot space is
$20. An application for vendor space is

State Attorney General Letitia James will host a round-table discussion regarding the opioid epidemic in Binghamton this afternoon. James has invited local Elected Officials, Treatment Providers, Addiction Experts & Impacted Individuals. The discussion will begin at 2:30 pm at the Office of the Attorney General at the State Office Building at 44 Hawley Street in the 18th Floor Community Room.
As New York
State Leaders consider making the recreational use of Marijuana legal across
the state, the New York Sheriff's Association, and other law enforcement
agencies are against that idea. Delaware
County Sheriff Craig Dumond commented on what happened in Colorado after they
became the first state to legalize recreational marijuana:

the American Journal of Psychiatry showed that people who use marijuana are 3
times more likely to use opioids; another study showed an increase in Psychosis
and schizophrenia among daily users, and states with recreational marijuana saw
a jump in murders & Aggravated Assaults attributed to its use.

annual Otsego County Conservation Association Earth Festival will take place on

Clinton Canoe Regatta officials announced that they will have their 12th Annual
Dan Elwood Memorial 5k Run and the Tracy Richmond 1 Mile Walk for Hospice on

$20 pre-registration fee, which will be accepted until Saturday, May
18th, after that, entrants may register the day of the race

conferring the Senate's Liberty Medal.
Seward said that Heller displayed great courage in saving the lives of

December. Senator Seward previously presented the Liberty Medal to John
Heller's parents John and Gayle Heller and fiancé Amber Roe during a memorial
service in Oneonta on January 4, 2019.
