The Norwich Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 102 Gilmore Lane just south of the Walmart Saturday Night at about 6:12 PM, Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino explains:

Norwich Firefighters were assisted by the Oxford, North Norwich and Sherburne Fire Departments, Chenango County Office of Emergency Services, NYSEG, Norwich Water Department, Chenango County Sheriff's Office.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joshua Sandell of New Lisbon following an investigation of a domestic dispute in the Town of New Lisbon. Sandell allegedly engaged in a physical domestic dispute while there were children present in the residence, he was held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment for Harassment & Endangering the Welfare of a minor.
The Delaware Valley Humane Society reminds area residents that there are 3 days left to make a donation to DVHS that will be matched by several area businesses through the Shelter Saviors program. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 182, Sidney NY 13838, the check must be dated by 12/31/25 for it to count. Links to other sites to donate with can be found at DVHumane.org. For ever dollar donate, the Shelter Saviors businesses will match it through December 31st.
The City of Oneonta announced that The Department of Public Works will be collecting Christmas trees beginning Monday, January 5th through the end of January 2026. Decorations, tinsel & electrical wires & bulbs should be removed.

Governor Hochul signed legislation that will require social media platforms to display labels warning of the dangerous impact certain features can have on young users’ mental health. The Legislation requires social media platforms that offer addictive feeds, auto play or infinite scroll to post warning labels on their platforms. Recent studies show that adolescents who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression, About half claim that social media makes them feel worse about their bodies, and teenagers with the highest levels of social media use are nearly twice as likely to rate their overall mental health as poor or very poor.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56 year old Arthur Proctor of Richfield Springs for Sexual Abuse, Forcible Touching & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation of sexual abuse at a residence in the Town of Richfield over the summer of 2025. Proctor is accused of y subjecting a juvenile victim to unwanted sexual contact, Proctor was held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment. An order of protection was requested on behalf of the victim.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Mark Cassaday of Oneonta, for Promoting Prison Contraband & Criminal Mischief at the Otsego County Jail. Sheriff investigators were notified by Correctional Facility staff that an inmate had intentionally damaged an outlet cover and used the broken pieces to fashion makeshift weapons. Cassady was processed before being returned to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.

Sidney Police Department responded Friday Afternoon to a report of a male subject pointing a firearm at a female at the Circle Drive Apartment Complex. Officers arrested 21 year old Connor Steidle of South Carolina, a search of the residence resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of cocaine and 2 firearms, including a handgun. Steidle was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, & 3 counts of Menacing. Steidle was transported to Delaware County Central Arraignment, where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 bail. Sidney Police Department was assisted by State Police with this arrest.
State Police responded Saturday to 438 County Highway 11, Lot 30 in the town of Laurens for to assist at a fully engulfed fire. West Laurens Fire, West Oneonta Fire, Mount Vision Fire and Laurens Fire were already on scene attempting to get the fire under control. It was determined that the resident, 62 year old Roger Delong was still inside and was later located deceased. Investigators from New York State Fire and the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services responded to the location and will determine the cause of the fire.
Deposit Fire fighters, with help from surrounding fire departments responded to a blaze on North Sanford Road, early Sunday Morning. early reports suggest that occupants & pets escaped, more information will be released shortly by the Deposit Fire Department.
State Police announced today that they are taking extra actions to ensure public safety during the Holiday Season, following the weekend attack of Jewish People in Australia on the 1st day of Hanukkah. State Police will maintain a presence at religious institutions, public gatherings, shopping malls and other venues, in order to deter criminal activity & be ready with a rapid response should an concern arise. If New Yorkers see suspicious activity, call the State Terrorism hotline at 1-866-safe-nys.

Last Wednesday, Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol responded to the latest in a series of reported thefts of returnable cans and bottles from the BSA Troop 152 at Valley Christian Reformed Church in the Town of Chenango. A camera was installed inside the bin, investigators identified the suspect as 69 year old John Dubrava of Chenango Forks, who had previously been arrested in Chenango County in a similar case. Investigators located Dubrava and the vehicle from the thefts at a residence in Chenango Forks, he was charged with 3 Counts of Burglary & Petty Larceny.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies in the Town of Delhi and observed an E-Bike traveling on State Highway 10, which is prohibited and the operator was not wearing a helmet as required by law. Deputies conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who was identified as 51-year-old Daniel White of Meridale, White was charged with felony DWI, Unlawful Operation of an E-Bike on a Highway, Operating E-Bike while Impaired, White was released on an appearance ticket and traffic summonses and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date to answer the charges.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced more than $300 million in new state funding to support health care transformation projects across New York. The awards, made through the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program, to support 22 projects aimed at improving health information technology by expanding patient electronic medical records, strengthening cybersecurity and patient information security, and expanding telehealth services. Locally, UHS Hospitals will receive 1.5 million dollars to expand their Telehealth services.

62 year old Robert Trago of Hancock, was sentenced in Delaware County Court to 5 years of in prison for his conviction of 2nd degree Assault. In September of 2024, State Police were dispatched to the Town of Hancock for shots fired with injuries, Trago shot at his neighbor in the arm while he was walking his dog in front of Trago’s residence, The victim was transported to Albany Medical Center by helicopter but was later released after the bleeding stopped. State Police Forensic Identification Unit Lab was able to match the bullet recovered from the victim’s arm with Trago's firearm.
36 year old Russell Clement of Oneonta, appeared in Delaware County Court Tuesday & was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in prison for his conviction of Burglary. In July of 2024, a trustee of a house on Charlotte Creek Road in the Town of Davenport was notified by a neighbor of a possible break-in to the house, the trustee noticed specific items missing in the house and a cigarette, where no one had smoked in the house for over 20 years. Gloves were left behind at the scene, DNA results came back with a positive match to Russell Clement. Clement was arrested and admitted to being at that residence and taking items from that residence.
State Police are investigating the death of 59 year old Robin Bowman of Findlay, Ohio, who was found deceased on State Route 281 in Cortlandville on November 25th near railroad tracks. Police do not know why Bowman was in the area, they believe that she drove to the Cortland area. The exact cause of her death is still pending. The investigation is ongoing.
Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand continues to press for Congress to vote to extend the subsidies that help millions of Americans afford health care:

On Thursday, Democrats will force a vote on a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits. Without an extension, ACA enhanced premium tax credits will expire at the end of 2025, causing 20 million Americans, to see a drastic increase in their health insurance costs.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Jacob Roman of Walton with 2 counts of Grand Larceny, and 1 count of Burglary, On October 18th, Deputies were dispatched to Benton Avenue in the Village of Walton for a reported Burglary in Progress where they located, identified and arrested Roman. On November 21st, Deputies located and arrested Roman on new charges after it was alleged that he had taken the victim’s credit card and made numerous purchases on the card which amounted to over $1,500 without authorization. Roman was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.
Gene Schmidt of Unadilla & his family will once again offer a free Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day at the Sidney Elks Lodge, Schmidt said that do need some volunteers to help with preparation, serving and cleaning up:

State Police & Local Law Enforcement Agencies around the State New York State will increase patrols during the holidays to combat issues like impaired and reckless driving, and to deter other crimes like robbery and larceny. The patrols will include both visible enforcement, such as checkpoints, as well as unmarked vehicles mingle with traffic to catch distracted drivers.
The 14th Annual Holiday Craft Fair will be held by the Bainbridge Guilford Teacher's Association on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the BG High School Gym. Over 40 local crafter & artisans will participate, there will be raffle & door prizes, people are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, pet food or a hygiene product as a donation & to get a ticket for a door prize.

33 year old Corey Green of Vestal was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 19 years in federal prison for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy spanning the United States. Green admitted that he possessed, distributed, and conspired to distribute large quantities of fentanyl, heroin & Methamphetamine in and around Broome County, he also admitted to possessing 3 handguns and 2 AK-47 style weapons to further his drug-trafficking activities, while being prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous convictions, & conspiring to launder his drug-trafficking proceeds. Green was sentenced to a 19 year prison term, concurrent 3 and 5-year terms of post-release supervision, and a money judgment of over $185,000 of unrecovered proceeds from his drug trafficking. Co-conspirator Michael Jacobs of Endicott, was previously sentenced to 10 years and 10 months term of imprisonment & 5 years of post-release supervision.
21 year old Joziah Worthington was sentenced following his convictions after trial in Broome County Court, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd & 3rd Degree, to 9 years in a State Correctional Facility with 5 years of post-release supervision for 1 charge, and 7 years in prison with 3 years of post-release supervision for other charge, to run concurrently. Worthington was arrested by state Police in 2024 in Johnson City, for illegally possessing a firearm as well as a large capacity ammunition feeding device capable of accepting 31 rounds, loaded with 25 rounds, Worthington’s DNA being found on the firearm.
Chobani announced that at the East Park Bandstand in Norwich last Saturday, following the 30th annual Norwich Parade of Lights, More than 30 Chobani volunteers distributed 3,000 cases of Chobani products, to thank the community. Chobani will also participate in the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Hyde Park in New Berlin on December 6th, employees plan to give out over 200 cases of yogurt to local families.
NBT Bank presented the United Way of Mid Rural New York with a check for $190,000 to help fund programs that provide financial stability, education and health resources for individuals and families in Chenango, Delaware, Madison and Otsego counties. Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Jacob Roman of Walton with 2 counts of Grand Larceny, and 1 count of Burglary, On October 18th, Deputies were dispatched to Benton Avenue in the Village of Walton for a reported Burglary in Progress where they located, identified and arrested Roman. On November 21st, Deputies located and arrested Roman on new charges after it was alleged that he had taken the victim’s credit card and made numerous purchases on the card which amounted to over $1,500 without authorization. Roman was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

State Police & Local Law Enforcement Agencies around the State New York State will increase patrols during the holidays to combat issues like impaired and reckless driving, and to deter other crimes like robbery and larceny. The patrols will include both visible enforcement, such as checkpoints, as well as unmarked vehicles mingle with traffic to catch distracted drivers.
The 14th Annual Holiday Craft Fair will be held by the Bainbridge Guilford Teacher's Association on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the BG High School Gym. 33 year old Corey Green of Vestal was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 19 years in federal prison for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy spanning the United States. Green admitted that he possessed, distributed, and conspired to distribute large quantities of fentanyl, heroin & Methamphetamine in and around Broome County, he also admitted to possessing 3 handguns and 2 AK-47 style weapons to further his drug-trafficking activities, while being prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous convictions, & conspiring to launder his drug-trafficking proceeds. Green was sentenced to a 19 year prison term, concurrent 3 and 5-year terms of post-release supervision, and a money judgment of over $185,000 of unrecovered proceeds from his drug trafficking. Co-conspirator Michael Jacobs of Endicott, was previously sentenced to 10 years and 10 months term of imprisonment & 5 years of post-release supervision.
21 year old Joziah Worthington was sentenced following his convictions after trial in Broome County Court, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd & 3rd Degree, to 9 years in a State Correctional Facility with 5 years of post-release supervision for 1 charge, and 7 years in prison with 3 years of post-release supervision for other charge, to run concurrently. Worthington was arrested by state Police in 2024 in Johnson City, for illegally possessing a firearm as well as a large capacity ammunition feeding device capable of accepting 31 rounds, loaded with 25 rounds, Worthington’s DNA being found on the firearm.
Chobani announced that at the East Park Bandstand in Norwich last Saturday, following the 30th annual Norwich Parade of Lights, More than 30 Chobani volunteers distributed 3,000 cases of Chobani products, to thank the community. Chobani will also participate in the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Hyde Park in New Berlin on December 6th, employees plan to give out over 200 cases of yogurt to local families.

41 Year old Trevor Metterhauser of Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to attempted aggravated sexual abuse, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children, and multiple counts of possession of child pornography. The case involves 2 small children, 1 in upstate New York & the Other in Texas. Metterhauser admitted that he conspired with Brandon Whitford to sexually exploit a 4-year-old girl in New York, In December 2022, he traveled to Texas to sexually assault a 2-year-old child and to record that abuse. When Metterhauser was arrested he had multiple electronic devices that contained the sexual assaults; and child pornography he obtained from the internet.
State Police today announced that they issued 13,036 tickets statewide during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period. Troopers conducted sobriety checkpoints, deployed DWI patrols, and ticketed drivers who were using handheld electronic devices. Troopers arrested 247 people for DWI and investigated 1,277 crashes, including 2 fatal crashes. In Troop C, there were 1232 ticketed, including 21 DWI Arrests, 434 for speeding, 41 for distracted driving & 35 violators of the "Move Over" Law.

Norwich Police responded Tuesday to the report of an Emu running loose on Chenango Avenue. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald declared that influenza is now prevalent in New York State, health care personnel who have not received this year’s flu vaccine MUST wear masks in areas where patients may be present. The Department has a total of 17,783 positive flu cases, Outside of New York City, week-over-week flu cases are up 114%, to 3,619. Hospitalizations doubled to 413 across the State. Attorney General Letitia James won a court order preventing the federal government from enforcing a provision in the so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" that would strip Planned Parenthood of its Medicaid funds, jeopardizing health care for millions of low-income patients across the country. Attorney General James joined a coalition of 21 other attorneys general and the governor of Pennsylvania in suing the Department of Health and Human Services to block the provision, The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a ruling granting the coalition's motion for a preliminary injunction, ordering HHS to continue paying Medicaid funds to all states and clinics in the coalition.

The program is administered by the state but funded by the federal government. The funding bill that ended the government shutdown included the same level of funding as last year, but the administration has not released the $4 billion allocated for the program.
35 year old Kyron Milner of Binghamton was found guilty by a jury for 3rd degree Burglary and Resisting Arrest. On December 28, 2024, the Binghamton Police Department responded to a business alarm at 200 Court Street in the City of Binghamton. Security cameras inside the building showed Milner inside the secured premises, Milner falsely claimed to officers that he was an employee of the business, when he was not., he resisted arrest, but was taken into custody. Milner faces up to 7 years in State Prison upon sentencing at a later date.

State Police Organized Retail Theft Task Force has recovered more than $2.6 million in stolen goods statewide since launching new initiatives to curb retail theft in April 2024. Across 1,006 operations, State Police and local law enforcement partners have made 1,224 arrests and filed 2,146 charges, which translates to a 13% decrease in retail theft year-over-year in municipalities outside of New York City, for the 1st 6 months of 2025.

Health department officials stated that Telephone scammers are mimicking the Department, some New Yorkers have been receiving phone calls from people identifying themselves as a Department of Health Employee, they will ask for information about a controlled substance prescription, adding to the confusion, the caller ID may even say the caller is from the Department of Health. Officials said that the Health Department will not make such calls to private citizens, they advise people who receive these calls to hang up & alert local law enforcement.

State Forest Rangers responded to Hancock Sunday following the report of 2 hikers from Brooklyn who were lost off trail at Jensen’s Ledges. Forest Rangers spoke with the lost individuals by phone and were able to obtain their coordinates. Rangers found the hikers in about 2 hours Sunday evening and assisted them back to their vehicle. Officials remind hikers that before entering the backcountry, visit the DEC's Hike Smart NY, Adirondack Backcountry Information, and Catskill Backcountry Information webpages for more information. Hikers should also put the Forest Rangers hotline in their phone, the number is 833-NYS-RANGERS, 911 can also be used, more information is available at dec.ny.gov.
Students with a total family income up to $175,000 will be able to attend Colgate University tuition-free, and those with family incomes of up to $200,000 will have their demonstrated aid need met without loans starting in the fall of 2026, as part of the expansion of the Colgate Commitment, program to increase access and affordability, first launched in 2020. The Town of Colchester Police Department arrested 3 individuals following an investigation into a series of burglaries and larcenies. 21 year old Donavin Brock of Colchester was charged with Burglary, Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Conspiracy, Criminal Mischief, & Aggravated Harassment, 18 year old Tenlei Wood of Walton, was charged with Burglary, Grand Larceny, & Conspiracy and 40 year old Brooke Walley of Andes, was charged with Burglary, following the investigation by the Town of Colchester Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff's Office into multiple incidents involving stolen property, unlawful entry, and related crimes throughout the community. The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be pending, the State Police Forensic Identification Unit assisted in the processing of the crime scenes.
The Sidney Police Department has added K9 Chase, to the department, he is handled by Officer Royce Terry & he is a 1 year old Dutch Shepherd. Officer Terry told WCDO news about his new canine partner, and how the community support by area businesses, private donations, & the Sidney Central School district has been outstanding:

NYSEG will be holding a public statement hearing at SUNY Oneonta on Thursday, October 16th at 1:00pm in the Morris Conference Center, for the purpose of receiving comments concerning the proposed changes in the electric and gas delivery rates and practices and the proposed closure of certain walk-in office locations operated by the Company.
Stephen Filan pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon, stemming from the illegal possession of an assault rifle and related firearm components. On May 19th, Binghamton Police responded to a report of Filan in possession of a firearm, he was uncooperative, officers secured a search warrant and an Extreme Risk Protection Order to search Filan’s residence, which resulted in the recovery of a loaded, operable assault rifle with a 25-round magazine holding 24 rounds. Sentencing is scheduled for January 15, 2026 in Broome County Court, Filan will be sentenced to 6 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of Post Release Supervision.
State tax receipts totaled $59.9 billion through September, the middle of State Fiscal Year, $702.2 million higher than financial plan estimates from the Division of Budget, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. State Police arrested 28 year old Austin Darrow of New Milford, Pennsylvania, for Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle. On October 4th, a Trooper observed a sedan following a vehicle too close on I-81 and then fail to stop at a stop sign at 2 locations, when the Trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the operator took off at a high rate of speed, into the state of Pennsylvania. With the assistance of Pennsylvania State Police, Troopers were able to locate Darrow, he turned himself in at the Binghamton Barracks and he was issued traffic tickets and an appearance ticket to the Kirkwood Town Court on November 5th.
Flu season is underway in New York State, and Chenango County Health Department officials are reminding residents to stay proactive and get their flu shot as soon as possible, Spokesperson Heather Miller explains:

Award recipients and their projects include Broome County Transit with $3.34 million for the funding for the purchase of 3 battery-electric buses.
A Groundbreaking Ceremony will be held on October 22nd for the Delaware Valley Medical Neighborhood in Walton at 2:00 PM. The project calls for an $80 million, 4-story facility featuring medical services like primary care, specialty care, physical therapy, and lab services to a single location. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
