Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced the successful use of Thermal Imaging Drone Aids in Locating Missing Person Sunday night. Deputies responded to a call of a missing vulnerable adult in the Town of Edmeston, Deputies quickly initiated a coordinated search & they deployed a Sheriff’s Office Unmanned Aerial System equipped with thermal imaging technology, Using the drone’s advanced capabilities, deputies successfully located the individual in a field. The K-9 team and responding deputies found the missing person, who was suffering from hypothermia and complaining of hip pain. The victim was taken to Bassett Medical Center for further evaluation.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Johnathon Brezinsky of Sidney for Promoting prison contraband at the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Investigators were notified by Correctional Facility Staff that an Inmate was found to be in possession of dangerous contraband within the Facility, Brezinsky was arrested, arraigned and was remanded back to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 dollars cash bail, $20,000 dollars partially secured bond, and he faces court action shortly.
State Police arrested 39 year old Joshua Skobern of Johnson City after an investigation into an arson at self-service car wash in Endicott. Skobern was charged with Criminal Mischief, 5th degree Arson after Troopers responded to Enviro Auto Wash on Watson Boulevard for damage that occurred on April 12, to a car wash payment kiosk. An investigation determined that Skobern punched the payment kiosk then struck it with a spray wand and then used a lighter to burn the face-plate, causing damage. Troopers located Skobern at his residence. He was taken into custody and was processed and was issued appearance tickets to the Union Town Court on April 28.
Delaware Opportunities is contracted to run the County Senior meals program at 6 locations, plus with deliveries, funded through state and federal subsidies, during contract negotiations with the County, officials determined that the program is not sustainable at the current costs, on Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors Office for the Aging oversight committee moved to provide for a pro-rated contract with Delaware Opportunities to expire on December 31, then in 2027 the Senior Meals program would be administered through the county rather than a 3rd party. If Delaware Opportunities ceases operation immediately, Delaware County would continue the service without interruption as a County-run program, through the Office for the Aging, with no change to site or staff.
UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, in partnership with the Norwich Family YMCA, will host a free educational program tonight focused on helping baseball and softball players stay strong, and injury-free throughout the season. UHS Spokesperson Melissa Stagnaro explains:

Norwich Police executed a search warrant Friday on East Main Street & Arrested 52 year old Delf King, following a Chenango County Court indictment. King was charged with 3 counts of Burglary, Attempted Robbery, and 2nd & 3rd degree Assault. King was arraigned on the charges & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 bail, pending future court action.
The online auction for the Grand Union Plaza at 54 East Main Street in Norwich, began Monday, with a starting bid of $500,000. Norwich Mayor Robert Jeffrey told WCDO News that they are talking to grocery industry people & federal & state lawmakers to try to get interest in the site:

The grocery store at that location closed with little advance warning recently, leaving downtown Norwich without easy access to groceries, and adding to the unemployment rate in the region when all of the workers were let go.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that 10 projects and individuals have been recognized with 2026 New York State Historic Preservation Awards. Locally, the MARK Project of Arkville, will receive the Joan K. Davidson Award, They have spent over 40 years advancing community revitalization in the central Catskills through collaborative, locally driven initiatives and becoming a model for community-based revitalization, uniting local leaders, residents, and funding partners, through initiatives in affordable housing, economic development, local MARK PROJECTfood systems, tourism, farming, civic planning, and downtown revitalization.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced their 2026 Annual Award Winners, the Business of the Year is Unalam, the Eugene A. Bettiol Jr. Distinguished Citizen is Jamie Reynolds, the Leadership Otsego Alumni is Allen Ruffles & the Volunteer of the Year is Adam Stoutenberg, they will be honored at the Chambers annual Dinner on May 14th.

The Work has been completed in downtown Norwich on Water Main Replacements & subsequent repaving of the effected roads, City of Norwich Community Development Director Erik Scrivener told WCDO News about the the last piece of the project & getting the rest of the federal funding:

Scrivener said that the next project may be on the City's Sewer system, which will require some updating in the future.
The United States Marine Corps Reserve today announced the schedule for the 2023 U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Train. The holiday train will take to the rails Saturday, Locally, the train will stop in Oneonta at the Gas Avenue Rail Crossing, from 12:05 pm. to 12:40 pm. The train will be in Bainbridge at the Walnut Street Rail Crossing, from 1:30 pm. to 2:00 pm. The train's schedule ends at the East Binghamton Yard Entrance, 3:20 pm. to 4:00 pm.
Hill City Celebrations to Host Oneonta Festival of Lights in Neahwa Park and First Night Celebration at the Foothills Performing Arts Center. The Festival of Lights Begins on December 16 through January 1st. Organizers stated that anyone interested in building a display for the Festival of Lights should Email firstnightoneonta@gmail.com by this Thursday November 30th, with set-ups beginning December 7. State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Binghamton arrested 48 year old Stacie Congdon of Windsor for 3rd degree Grand Larceny. An investigation revealed that while volunteering for the Windsor Town Fair, Congdon made several unauthorized debit card purchases and cash withdrawals totaling over $10,000 between May and September 2023. Congdon was arrested and then turned over to the Broome County Correctional Facility for Arraignment. On September 29, Congdon was arrested for 2nd degree Grand Larceny, for allegedly stealing over $50,000 from the nonprofit, Punch Out Parkinson’s Inc.

Over 300 members of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers local 1529 voted to approve a new 3 year Contract from Amphenol of Sidney this afternoon. Union Representative Kevin Weidman told WCDO News the issues of sick leave, & wage increases were included and the 2 tier system has been altered & will be phased out. 3rd shift workers will return to work at the Sidney facilities at 11:00 PM tonight.
Governor Kathy Hochul joined Acting Superintendent Steven Nigrelli in honoring 218 new New York State Troopers as they graduated today from the 211th session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy. The ceremony was held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. Today's graduation increases the State Police ranks to 4,742 sworn members. 29 of the new Troopers will report to Troop C in Sidney.
Delaware County Deputies were dispatched On April 29th to a report of a burglary at Herman’s Trailer Sales in the Town of Walton, followed by additional reports of larceny and burglary from the same location, The Investigation revealed that rare antiques and jewelry stolen from the Herman's property were sold for cash at a pawn Shop in Utica. Items were recovered from Utica, Sidney Walton, Unadilla & South New Berlin, Deputies arrested 39-year old Francis Lupo of Walton & 44-year-old Luke Lupo, of South New Berlin Petty Larceny, criminal mischief & Burglary Charges, and 33-year-old Mistyblue Decker of Hancock for criminal mischief and petty larceny. All 3 were released & will appear in Walton Court at a later date.

Brostek was charged with Operate out of interlock restriction, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Operating Without Insurance among several other similar charges, Brostek was issued uniform traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Milford Court at a later date.

Genao & other occupants were transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, after an investigation, Deputies arrested Genao, she was processed and released, & will appear in Town of Davenport Court at a later date.
The Board of Directors of Commerce Chenango announced the selection of Sal Testani as the organization’s new president and chief executive officer. Testani is a Norwich native , he has more than 16 years of experience as a senior leader with both MeadWestvaco and ACCO Brands in Sidney, & he will assume his new role on November 1. Testani will appear at today's Commerce Chenango Open House at their South Broad Street Norwich office.
The Delaware County Board of Elections reminds county residents that the GENERAL ELECTION is Tuesday November 8, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. State Attorney General Letitia James released a report on the role of online platforms like 4chan & Twitch in the Buffalo mass shooting at a Tops grocery store where 10 Black individuals were killed and 3 others were injured. James' Office reviewed thousands of pages of documents and social media content to examine how the alleged shooter Payton Gendron of Conklin used online platforms to plan, prepare, and publicize his attack. The report also said that the platforms lacked of oversight, transparency, and accountability in allowing hateful and extremist views to proliferate, leading to radicalization and violence. Gendron faces numerous state & federal charges in connection with the shooting, and could face the death penalty if convicted on the federal charges.

State Attorney General Letitia James released a report on the role of online platforms like 4chan & Twitch in the Buffalo mass shooting at a Tops grocery store where 10 Black individuals were killed and 3 others were injured. James' Office reviewed thousands of pages of documents and social media content to examine how the alleged shooter Payton Gendron of Conklin used online platforms to plan, prepare, and publicize his attack. The report also said that the platforms lacked of oversight, transparency, and accountability in allowing hateful and extremist views to proliferate, leading to radicalization and violence. Gendron faces numerous state & federal charges in connection with the shooting, and could face the death penalty if convicted on the federal charges.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is awarding more than $13 million in grants across rural New York state, Bassett Hospital will be receiving $229,071 in funding. Basset Officials announced that the money will be used for projects such as implementing tele-health and nutrition assistance programs, increase staffing to administer COVID-19 vaccines and testing, to build or renovate facilities, and purchase medical supplies.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 59 year old David Spry of South Kortright for DWI & moving from a lane unsafely, after an investigation of a 1 car motor vehicle accident in the Town of Stamford October 1st. Deputies observed a vehicle that appeared to have gone off of the roadway and sustained damage, they made contact with Spry, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Spry was transported to O’Connor Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the motor vehicle accident, he was released on appearance tickets and will appear at the Town of Stamford Court at a later date.

The National Weather Service investigators confirmed an EF 2 tornado Thursday Morning in Western NY. Investigators determined that the tornado touched down in the Town of Java in Wyoming County, for about 20 minutes, with winds of 115 miles per hour, it traveled 10 miles and had a width was 200 yards. A barn was destroyed but none of the livestock were injured.
The State DEC announced that the beach at Glimmerglass State Park on Otsego Lake has been closed for swimming due to a Harmful Algae Bloom. DEC officials said that other beaches on the lake at 3 Mile Point, and Fairy Springs remain open, but are being monitored.
The Sidney Police Department & State Police, participated Thursday in the "Go for the Gold" event at the Dunkin Donuts Location at the Speedway convenience store at State Route 7 and 8. This fund raising event benefits the Special Olympics of New York, the local effort raised $1,967 for the athletes of the Special Olympics.

The State Comptroller's Office conducted an audit of the State Department of Health, they found that the Department was unprepared to respond to infectious disease outbreaks at nursing homes, even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York. A lack of funding for public health forced the Department to operate without critical information systems and staff that could have identified and helped limit the spread of COVID-19 at nursing homes, also the department did not provide the public with accurate COVID-19 death counts and became entangled in the undercounting of those deaths as Governor Cuomo took control of information provided to the public. The Auditors believe that the actual number of nursing home residents who died is still uncertain.

Norwich City Police officers conducted a traffic stop on Mitchell Street Friday Morning, the driver left the vehicle & ran, & was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. Norwich police charged 23 year old Dylan Keenan of Bridgewater for criminal possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of governmental administration and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, plus Keenan was wanted on several outstanding warrants from different police agencies. Police confiscated methamphetamines packaged for sale, Keenan was processed & was was released on an appearance ticket, but was turned over to State Police for additional processing on the warrants.
The New York State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for January 2022. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.4% in December 2021 to 5.3% in January 2022. Delaware & Chenango Counties reported at 4% Unemployment, Otsego had 4.1% unemployment in January.
Jake Cotten was elected as Unadilla’s new village mayor over challenger Christopher Price in village elections Tuesday, by a vote of 117 to 82. Democrat Paul Baldwin and Republican Joseph Paliotta won trustee seats on the Unadilla Village Board. In Otego, Democrat David Clapper & Republican James Salisbury were elected to the village board.

Delaware County Board of Supervisors Chairperson Tina Mole announced today that the County will not reallocate resources to enforce the newest New York State mask mandate that took effect on Monday. Mole stated that Delaware County does not have the internal framework to enforce this mandate, but businesses have oversight from other state agencies, such as Agriculture and Markets or other professional licensing boards, which may enforce the Mask newest mandate. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the Town of Hamden last Tuesday for an equipment violation. 53 year-old Lisamichelle LaLonde, of Morris, was operating a motor vehicle with a suspended New York driver’s license, due to a previous insurance lapse. LaLonde was later issued traffic tickets for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree, Unlicensed Operator, and Insufficient Brake Lamps. LaLonde is scheduled to appear before the Town of Hamden Court at a later date to answer the charges.
As a result of low blood donor turnout in recent months, the Red Cross is heading into the holidays with its lowest blood supply in more than a decade at this time of year. Blood donations are desperately needed now to meet the needs of accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. A blood drive is being held in Franklin today, from 12:30 to 5:30 PM, at the Franklin Fire Department, 351 Main Street, and appointments can be made with the Red Cross Blood donor App, redcrossblood.org or by calling 1-800-Red Cross.

Delaware County Board of Supervisors Chairperson Tina Mole announced today that the County will not reallocate resources to enforce the newest New York State mask mandate that took effect on Monday. Mole stated that Delaware County does not have the internal framework to enforce this mandate, but businesses have oversight from other state agencies, such as Agriculture and Markets or other professional licensing boards, which may enforce the Mask newest mandate. County residents are asked to follow the mandate in business following the mandate lease, pleases wear masks in public spaces, get vaccinated and continue to be diligent with social distancing and hand washing practices. Otsego County Sheriff's department arrested a County inmate Wednesday for assaulting a Corrections Officer and fleeing from custody during a Court appearance in the Town of New Lisbon yesterday afternoon. 27 year old John Clark was charged with Assault on Police Officer, 2nd degree Escape, 3rd degree Assault, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest & Harassment. Otsego County corrections officers were transporting Clark to a regularly scheduled court appearance when he fled from the custody of the corrections officers, a foot pursuit was initiated and a corrections officer attempted to take the defendant back in to custody. During a brief struggle, Clark caused the correction officer to sustain a hand fracture. Clark was returned back to the Otsego County Correctional Facility and will be processed at Otsego County Centralized Arraignment at a later time. The corrections officer was treated at Bassett Hospital and a return to work has not been established.
SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras will resign January 14th following criticism for his actions while serving as a top aide to former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Malatras was accused of sending disturbing text messages and emails regarding Lindsay Boylan, after she publicly accused Cuomo of sexual harassment, those messages were part of the investigation by Attorney General Letitia James into the former Governor's actions.
Oxford Fire Fighters responded this morning to a structure fire at 16 Merchant Street at the corner of Greene Street in the village. The Fire was reported at around 7:30 AM, the building housed several apartments & all occupants were able to escape, some pets were not able to be saved, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Bassett Healthcare Network announced today that in accordance with an executive order enacted by the New York State Department of Health on December 3, 2 of their hospitals; A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta & Little Falls Hospital, have been placed on a state-wide list of facilities that currently have occupancies of 90% or more. These facilities will limit non-essential elective procedures for the next 2 weeks.
The Delaware County Board of Supervisors has decided to name the Delaware County Department of Economic Development as the entity to promote tourism. Previously, tourism programs were run by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, through a contract with Blue Spark Creative Services of Delhi, Blue Spark is expected to continue its work through the Department of Economic Development.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded to a fatal 2-car motor vehicle accident on County Road 36 in the Town of Guilford Monday. Investigators reported that 22-year-old Dominique Brissett of Walkill was traveling north bound on County Road 36 and collided with an SUV operated by 23-year-old Rachel Feyh of Sidney. Brissett was pronounced dead on the scene, Feyh was air lifted by Life Net to SUNY Upstate Medical in Syracuse, where she was listed in critical but stable condition. The investigation into the cause of the motor vehicle accident is still ongoing.
The state has made progress in making high-speed connections available to New Yorkers, ranking 2nd in the U.S. in the percentage of the population with broadband available in their neighborhood, but more than one million, or 13.8%, of households do not have access or a subscription to home broadband services, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The report finds that predominantly rural areas remain underserved by broadband infrastructure, approximately 1 in 3 New York households with income less than $20,000 lacked access to broadband at home. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced significant progress with the Emergency Rental Assistance Program and the Excluded Workers Program. The amount of pandemic-related emergency rental assistance paid out has nearly doubled in the past 3 weeks, up to $399 million, enabling tenants at risk for eviction to stay in their homes and helping struggling landlords to receive unpaid rent. Starting tomorrow, middle-income renters previously ineligible for assistance can begin applying for funding through the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, also Governor Hochul announced that over $1 billion in Excluded Workers Program funds have been approved for distribution to date. The State Department of Health today announced that New York State's youth smoking rate has reached an all-time low. As of 2020, less than 3% of high school students smoke cigarettes, down from 27.1% in 2000. The Youth Tobacco Survey found that youth tobacco use was down across all tobacco product categories, including a drop in e-cigarette use for the first time. A Ribbon Cutting will be held tomorrow morning at the Leilani Way Community Center in Norwich at 105 Leilani Lane, for the Roots & Wings new location. Robin Cotter of the Roots & Wings Program told WCDO News about the event tomorrow:

Catholic Charities in Sidney is looking for volunteers to assist them in their next community mass food distribution on September 28th, spokesperson Penny McKnight explains:

McKnight said that they need about 40 to 50 volunteers to help set & then distribute the food to those who show up on the 28th; McKnight said that they have averaged between 9 & 12 tons of food at the previous distributions.

Delaware County Public Health reported 101 new cases of COVID 19 in the last week, bringing their total of active cases to 184, with 4 hospitalized & 266 quarantined. 49.6% of the total population is vaccinated, 80% of the positive cases are unvaccinated, and Delaware County residents can find vaccine clinic sites at covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov or vaccines.gov
The State Department of Health today announced that New York State's youth smoking rate has reached an all-time low. As of 2020, less than 3% of high school students smoke cigarettes, down from 27.1% in 2000. The Youth Tobacco Survey found that youth tobacco use was down across all tobacco product categories, including a drop in e-cigarette use for the first time. After a year and a half hiatus, due to the Covid-19 Virus, the Mid York Concert Band is looking forward to beginning rehearsals today for the 40 plus piece ensemble made up of professionals, educators, students and dedicated amateurs from Chenango and surrounding counties.
