The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ganesh Ramsaran for 2nd degree Bribery; he is accused of offering a Chenango County Corrections Officer of $100,000 to aid in his escape from the Correctional Facility. Ramsaran was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded back to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000,000 Dollars Cash Bail or $2,500,000 Property Bond, he’ll return to the Town of Norwich Court at a later date. The investigation is continuing with additional charges possible.
The State DEC amended its Chronic Wasting Disease regulation, to prohibit people from importing into New York certain parts of white-tailed deer, elk or moose taken in the state of Ohio. In late October, the Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed a case of Chronic Wasting Disease in a white-tailed deer, 1 has also been confirmed in Pennsylvania. Hunters who plan to hunt white-tailed deer, elk or moose in Ohio or Pennsylvania must remove the brain, eyes, spinal cord, tonsils, intestinal tract, spleen and lymph nodes before returning to New York with a deer, more information is available at dec.ny.gov.
NYSEG will inspect natural gas transmission rights of way in the Oneonta region this week. The inspections will be done by helicopter, enabling company officials to spot & correct vegetation & encroachment issues that could hinder repair crews. One man was killed and 4 other people were critically injured in a serious two-car motor vehicle accident in the town of Colchester on Thursday morning, The crash occurred at about 10 AM on County Highway 7, Delaware County deputies & state police responded, the male driver of one of the vehicles was killed, 4 occupants in the other vehicle, were critically injured & transported to trauma centers in the Hudson valley region. The names of those involved in the accident are being withheld until notification is given to the families, the investigation is continuing.
A mid-level appeals court reversed a lower court’s decision to throw out petition signatures of a Republican state Senate candidate. The state Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled the lower court erred in rejecting the petitions of Tioga County businessman Denver Jones, who is seeking to unseat State Senator Tom Libous of Binghamton. On August 1st the state Board of Elections determined 743 of the 1,713 signatures Jones submitted in July were invalid due to residency issues and other problems. The new order states a total of 203 signatures are reinstated, giving Jones more than required 1,000 signatures. The decision is not final, the case was sent back to the lower court for further proceedings.
The Delaware County Department of Corrections announced that the 4th annual Andrew Brown Memorial Golf Tournament would be held tomorrow at Hardwood Hills gold Course in Masonville, with a tee time of 8:30 AM. Organizers announced that the money raise with this years tournament will go to the family of Johnson City Police officer David Smith, who was shot & killed in the line of duty on March 31st.
Governor Cuomo's campaign will not appeal a ruling allowing Zephyr Teachout to remain in the Democratic primary. A state appeals court rejected the campaign's argument that Teachout has spent part of the past five years in Vermont. A lower court had already ruled Teachout could stay on the ballot for the September 9th primary. Teachout teaches at Fordham University Law School in New York City. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found 85 percent of state Democrats said they know too little about Teachout to have any opinion of her.
The Binghamton Mets clinched their second straight postseason berth as a result of the New Britain Rock Cats' 10-1 loss to Richmond Thursday night. The berth marks Binghamton's 8th trip to the postseason in franchise history, winning the Eastern League Championship in 1992 and 1994.
The Drug Enforcement Administration will enforce tighter control over prescriptions of the painkiller hydrocodone. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said hydrocodone would be moved from a Schedule III drug to a Schedule II in 45 days. This will mean greater restrictions in how doctors can prescribe the drug as well as the quantity that can be prescribed. According to the DEA, nearly seven million Americans abuse controlled-substance prescription medications, including opioid painkillers that contain hydrocodone.

Service arrangements have been announced for fallen New York State Trooper Christopher Skinner. Skinner was a 13-year veteran of the New York State Police; he was killed in the line of duty last Thursday, after he was intentionally hit by a car while conducting a traffic stop on I-81. Calling hours are scheduled from 3:00 to 8:00 PM today at the Community Baptist Church on 743 Chenango Street in Port Dickinson. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Tuesday, at First Baptist Church at 1321 Reynolds Rd. in Johnson City.
State Police warn the public of any potential fraudulent accounts that may be created on the Internet requesting donations for the family of Trooper Christopher Skinner. The Skinner family is endorsing 2 funds for donations at this time. The first is the “Skinner Children Education Fund” that has been set up at the Visions Federal Credit Union. The second is the Signal 30 Fund at nystpba.org (http://www.nystpba.org/Home.aspx). This is an organization that help’s the families of New York State Police.

Funeral services for Johnson City Police officer David Smith will be held this morning in Johnson City. The Funeral will start at 11:00 AM at Sarah Jane Johnson Church in Johnson City. Road closures along Main Street in Johnson City will be instituted; Representatives from Police agencies from all over will be attending.
The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 26-year-old Brad Church of Edmeston for Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest. Church allegedly approached a vehicle that had been pulled over by a deputy, and obstructed traffic, and refused to comply with the deputy, and then resisted arrest. Church was arraigned and was sent to the Chenango County Jail on $5,000 cash bail pending future court action.
Governor Cuomo announced that the DMV will begin issuing the first State emergency management red license plates for vehicles registered to State agencies, counties, cities, towns, and villages. Vehicles that get the red plates will get immediate access during a state emergency, the plates will have a white background and a red banner with the “EM” designation appearing in the upper left hand corner. The Griffins are alleged to have left a dog tied up outside for several hours in inclement weather without adequate food, shelter, and water as required by State law. The dog also had a fractured leg that did not receive medical attention. Both defendants were issued appearance tickets and released; they face court action in the Town of Bainbridge Court at a later date.

The National Baseball Hall Of Fame announced today that on Memorial Day Weekend would feature 75 former major leaguers playing in 2014 Hall of Fame Classic, presented by Ford Motor Company, at Doubleday field in Cooperstown. Hall of Fame Members Roberto Alomar, Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Eddie Murray, Phil Niekro and Ozzie Smith will serve as managers and coaches for the sixth annual game on Saturday, May 24th starting with the Home Run Derby at 1 PM and the Classic will start at 2:05 PM. Their annual report placed New York at the top of the list for the second straight year, though the total burden fell from 13.1% in 2010. The national average for 2011 was 9.8%. State Lawmakers have lowered the State tax rates since 2011.

Yaro is accused of the theft of a vehicle from Hancock that was recovered in the Town of Kortright later that day, following the recovery of that vehicle; Deputies investigated the theft of a vehicle from the Town of Kortright, which was recovered by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputies the following day. Yaro was arraigned in the Town of Hancock Court on the two Grand Larceny charges Wednesday; he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail pending further court action.
Tougher texting-while-driving penalties for teenage and new drivers were included in this year’s state budget agreement. Under the state’s new budget, drivers who are under 18, or have a probationary license, will see their driving rights suspended for 120 days on a first texting conviction and a year on the second one. The governor has pushed for tougher distracted-driving penalties since taking office in 2011, when he and lawmakers changed the state’s texting-while-driving ban from a secondary to a primary offense. Last year, there were 55,130 texting-while-driving tickets issued in the state, up 82 percent from the previous year.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month, where parents are encouraged to educate their children about the dangers of alcohol & alcohol dependency. With so-called title loans, the short-term borrowing by consumers with poor credit histories can carry high interest rates, making them difficult to pay off and easier to roll over for additional interest. The Johnson city police department announced that calling hours for officer David Smith will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the Chase & Son Funeral Home at 737 Chenango Street in Port Dickinson and funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at Sara Jane Johnson Memorial Church at 308 Main Street in Johnson City. Johnson City Police announced that street closures are expected along Main & Baldwin Street on Friday.

The search warrant followed an investigation into Crack Cocaine sales, officers arrested 18 year old Noel Budram of The Bronx, who was found to be in possession of crack cocaine and $2,400 cash. Budram was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court, he was remanded to the Chenango County Jail and is scheduled to reappear at a later date, further arrests are pending.

Binghamton & Johnson City Police Chief Joseph Zikuski announced that Johnson City Police Officer David Smith was shot & killed yesterday morning at about 7:05 AM near Wilson Hospital. The suspect was 43-year-old James Clarke of Greene, who died yesterday morning in surgery. Officer Smith arrived near the entrance of Southern Tier Imaging to a reported disturbance, when he arrived; Clarke attacked him, took his service weapon & shot Officer Smith during the struggle. Police back up arrived & shot Clarke several times. The investigation is continuing.
Governor Cuomo announced an agreement between Tesla Motors, the New York State Automobile Dealers Association to resolve a dispute concerning how auto manufacturers can sell their products to consumers. Under the agreement, Tesla Motors will maintain their 5 locations in the State, & additional Tesla retail locations will be established under a strengthened dealer franchise law. The Legislation to implement the agreement will be introduced shortly with the support of leadership in the Senate and Assembly.

Governor Cuomo announced an agreement between Tesla Motors, the New York State Automobile Dealers Association to resolve a dispute concerning how auto manufacturers can sell their products to consumers. Under the agreement, Tesla Motors will maintain their 5 locations in the State, & additional Tesla retail locations will be established under a strengthened dealer franchise law. The Legislation to implement the agreement will be introduced shortly with the support of leadership in the Senate and Assembly.
State Senator Jim Seward announced that the agreed upon 2014-15 state budget includes funding to reopen the DOT rest area along I-88 eastbound between exits 18 and 19 in Worcester. In 2010, the New York State Department of Transportation closed 6 rest
