Catholic Charities announced the results of Friday's Community Mass Food Distribution in Sidney. Overall, 684 Households participated, with 1,669 People attending the distribution, 16,968 pounds of food were given out, 34 volunteers participated.
Several Area Fire Departments responded to a reported structure fire at 8 Pearl Street in Bainbridge last night. The fire was reported on the 2nd floor, local firefighters responded again this morning for a rekindle. No injuries have been reported.
The State Department of Labor announced the next steps in the state’s $15 minimum hourly wage phase-in. The minimum wage rate in local counties will rise by $1 per hour, from $13.20 to $14.20,on December 31st. The Division's analysis found evidence of pressure for wages to rise in the midst of a continued pandemic-driven labor shortage.
Tomorrow On Tuesday, State Senator Fred Akshar, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge and representatives of the State Department of Transportation will join local officials, family and community members to dedicate a portion of New York Route 17C the Patrolman David 'DW' Smith Memorial Highway in the Village of Johnson City. The dedication will begin at 11:00am at the Johnson City Police Department, Officer Smith served with the Johnson City Police Department for 18 1/2 years, in 2014, he was fatally shot after responding to a disturbance at a local business.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested Catherine Shepler of Jefferson, following an investigation of a reported fraud that occurred in the Town of Stamford. Shepler is accused of intentionally purchasing items on a charge account of the victim, she was arrested & charged with 1 count Forgery & was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to the Town of Stamford Court at a later date to answer the charge.
The Chenango County Sheriff's Office has received numerous complaints involving a scam that is occurring nationwide. The callers are identifying themselves as Chenango County Sheriff's Office personnel and informing people by phone that they have an active arrest warrant and requesting gift cards be sent to rectify the outstanding warrant. Chenango County Sheriff's Office personnel will never call to request money or gift cards for any criminal matters.

State Police are searching for 16 year old Connor McLean of Peru New York, who was last seen on September 27th, at 8:00 pm near his residence. McLean is approximately 5’10 feet tall, and weighs approximately 190 pounds, he was wearing blue hoodie, shorts, brown slippers with socks, & was carrying a black backpack. Anyone with any information is asked to please contact State Police at 518-563-3761
State Police are looking to identify 2 people in connection with a September 4th report of a wallet that was stolen from the Mount Upton Dollar General.. The wallet that was stolen from a cart, A woman is seen in surveillance video taking the wallet, a male is with her while at the store. The empty wallet was later found at a gas pump at Speedway at State Routes 7 and 8, & was turned in to the store by a patron, Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at (607)-561-7400, Pictures of the people in question can be viewed at the WCDO Facebook page.
State Police responded to a report that an 85-year-old woman with dementia left her residence on foot several hours prior and could not be located. An organized search was formed in the town of Andes. Troopers and New York State Police K9 were assisted by State Forest Rangers and Delhi Village Police. The woman was located deceased about a mile from her residence, There is no indication of any foul play.
State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon issued an order accepting the recommendation of the Farm Laborers Wage Board to lower the current 60-hour threshold for overtime pay to 40 hours per week by January 1, 2032, allowing 10 years to phase in the new threshold, following a 2-year process and 14 public meetings and hearings. Farm work in excess of 40 hours per week would be required to be compensated at overtime rates, as it is in other occupations.
Broadway in Binghamton announced today that the individual tickets for Fiddler on the Roof, on November 8 & 9 at 7:30 PM at the FORUM THEATRE will go on sale today, at 10:00 AM. Broome County Sheriff David Harder has appealed the State Supreme Court’s Decision to force the county correctional facility to resume in-person visitation. A recent State Supreme Court ruling stated that the Broome County Correctional Facility must allow visitors to be able to see their jailed friends and family beginning on September 5th, as COVID did not have the same threat of transmission level as it did in the beginning. Visitation was suspended in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic began closing down businesses, schools, government offices and organization worldwide & virtual visitation was permitted at the Broome County Facility.
The Delaware County Department of Public Works will continue work on a catch basin on County Route 14 in the Town of Franklin for the next 2 weeks. The work will take place in the hamlet of Treadwell just east of the intersection of County Route 14 and Case Hill Road. Traffic will be controlled with temporary Stop signs, the traveling public should expect minor delays during the work period.
State Senator Peter Oberacker marked Women’s Equality Day by announcing Delaware County Undersheriff Kim Smith as the 2022 New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” from the 51st Senate District. Smith started as a part-time corrections officer with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office in 1997. Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 55 year old Kevin Washington of Sherburne on an active Arrest Warrant Tuesday. Washington was arrested in Sherburne after being located by Detectives, he was taken into custody without incident. The Village of Sherburne Court issued the warrant after Washington failed to appear on previous charges, he was arraigned in the Village of Sherburne Court and was released & was ordered to appear in court at a later date.

New York's new gun laws are enacted today, following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down the state's century-old pistol permitting process. The laws contain strengthened background checks and firearm safety and live-fire training for individuals seeking to obtain concealed carry permits; prohibit concealed carry permit holders from bringing their firearms into sensitive locations, including bars, libraries, schools, government buildings and hospitals, among others; and require renewal or re-certification of permits every three years, More information is available at gunsafety.ny.gov.
Commerce Chenango will hold their next Business After Hours Event today. The event will run from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at the Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center on State Route 80 in Sherburne.
The State DEC announced that open hunting seasons are starting up. Hunting season begins for Squirrel and Canada goose today, with early bear and antlerless deer seasons starting on September 10th, in certain wildlife management units. More information is available at the State DEC website.
Avelo Airlines announced plans Wednesday to provide air service to the Greater Binghamton Airport, starting November 16th. The new airline will offer non-stop flights to Orlando and Ft. State Police Child Abuse Unit arrested 59 year old John Olson of Warwick for allegedly sexually abusing multiple juvenile victims, at a daycare/foster care home in the town of Warwick in Orange County and town of Andes in Delaware County. On May 21st, OLSON was arrested in the town of Andes, he was indicted by a Grand Jury in Delaware County for 1st & 2nd degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act, Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, Criminal Sexual Act & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, he was also indicted by a Grand Jury in Orange County on similar charges and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail. Police also arrested 80 year old Joan Parks for Failure to Report Child Abuse, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, & she was issued an appearance ticket to the Town of Warwick Court. The first bill bans medical liens and wage garnishment; the second regulates the billing of so-called "facility fees," and requires that patients be informed about those fees up front. 112 nonprofit hospitals sued more than 53-thousand patients across the state between 2015 and 2020, some provision will still exist to allow hospitals to sue patients in certain circumstances. 13 other states already have these laws in place.
The New Yorkers Using SNAP or EBT cards reported issues buying food Late Sunday into earlier today, with outages reported at several locations across the country, including New York State. About 5,000 outages were reported, but reported outages had declined by this afternoon, no information has been released about the cause of the outage issues, more information about the programs in New York are available at otda.ny.gov/programs/snap.

Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 20-year-old Carson Vanco of Endicott pleaded guilty to 1st degree attempted assault in court Friday. On July 26th, Vanco shot a man in the chest with a bow & arrow, he will be sentenced to 8 years in prison and 5 years post-release supervision when he is sentenced on November 29th.
Governor Hochul signed a bill by State Senator Fred Akshar and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, to rename a portion of State Route 17C after Officer David “DW” Smith. Officer Smith was shot and killed responding to a disturbance in 2014, he served in the Johnson City Police Department for 18 years.
Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded on August 21st after an Officer observed a stolen vehicle from Syracuse, traveling on Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson, the vehicle fled following an attempted traffic stop. A pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle hit another motorists in Binghamton. 26 year old Morgan Schoonmaker was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken into custody as she fled, 31 year old Corey Murry of Syracuse was taken into custody a short time later, both possessed heroin, cocaine, and oxycodone and will face numerous charges when processed
New York State’s new minimum requirements for concealed carry will take effect on September 1st, following a recent US Supreme Court ruling that struck down a century State Law, that required New Yorkers who applied for a concealed carry permit to show to a judge “proper cause,”. The State Division of Criminal Justice Services and State Police released new guidelines for residents looking to obtain a concealed carry permit, more information is available at criminaljustice.ny.gov.
