Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 2.5% in October compared to the same month in 2022, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled nearly $1.8 billion, up $43.5 million compared to the same time last year. County and city collections outside of New York City totaled $880 million, an increase of 2.2%. 45 out of 57 counties experienced some year-over-year increase.
Enrollment across the State University of New York campuses increased from year to year, for the first time in a decade. The Governor's Office reported that the year-to-year total system-wide student enrollment increased, 1.1% overall, 367,542 students. Undergraduate first-time enrollment was up across all sectors at 4.3% The technology sector showed the strongest increase at 13.3%, followed by community colleges at 3.9 percent.
NY State of Health announced the beginning of its annual open enrollment period for health insurance. Beginning today, consumers have until December 15th, to renew or enroll in a Qualified Health Plan for health insurance starting January 1, 2024. more information is available at 1-855-355-5777 or nystateofhealth.ny.gov.
The House Ethics panel says it has found "substantial evidence" of lawbreaking by Congressman George Santos, and has referred its findings to the Justice Department. The committee said Thursday that Santos' conduct warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House. Santos has maintained his innocence and refused to resign despite calls from many of his colleagues to do so. Santos is accused of knowingly making his campaign committee file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission, among other misdeeds.
The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State decreased over the month by 10,300, or 0.1%, to 8,252,000 in October. The State's unemployment rate increased from 4.0% in September to 4.2% in October, while the State's labor force decreased by 1,900, the statewide labor force participation rate held constant at 61.6%.
CDO Workforce will host a Job Fair at SUNY Morrisville in Norwich today. The event runs from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM today with representatives from area businesses looking to add to their staff.
Otsego County Correctional Facility is seeking full-time Correction Officers. Applicants are encouraged To apply, as long as they have a High School Graduation or a GED, a New York State Driver's License, they must pass a background investigation and psychological test will be required following conditional offer of appointment. Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident on the I-88 West / I-81 South overpass in the Town of Chenango yesterday morning involving 6 different vehicles. The investigation found that a pickup truck was traveling westbound on the I-88 overpass when the vehicle hit a patch of ice and flipped onto its hood. The 2nd vehicle behind the truck was able to stop before a collision could occur, but the next four vehicles all hit the ice, were unable to stop and collided with the vehicle two and each other. The accident led to the closure of I-88 westbound near Exit 2 for several hours for cleanup. 2 of the drivers were transported to Wilson and Lourdes hospital respectively for minor injuries. The ice was caused by a parked construction site water truck that was leaking water onto the highway. No charges have been filed at this time.
The Chenango County Health Department is hosting a COVID-19 vaccine clinic for uninsured and under-insured individuals through the Bridge Access Program. This COVID-19 vaccine clinic is for 18 years of age and older, it will be held today & tomorrow from 9-11 am and 1-3 pm at 5 Court Street Norwich. Appointments can be made at 607-337-1660.

State Police at Norwich arrested 37 year old Michael Salamey of Frankfort, in connection with a renovation at home in Chenango County. Salamey was charged with 2 counts of 3rd degree Grand Larceny, Scheming to Defraud & Petty Larceny. Salamey is accused of entering into a contract for $33,000 to complete improvements to a home in the village of Sherburne, he did not finish the work and also stopped communicating with the homeowners. Additionally, Salamey is accused of failing to pay a surveyor & Sub Contractor, he was arraigned in the Norwich City Court and is scheduled to appear at the Sherburne Village Court on November 16, 2023.

The City of Norwich will add 3 new Police Officers, from the recent class of graduates at the The Broome County Law Enforcement Academy. 40 graduates completed the 6 month training course to become deputies or police officers, and will be joining law enforcement agencies around the southern tier, including 2 deputies for the Chenango County Sheriff's Office.
State Police Investigators continue to search for Brandon Williams who was last seen on March 11, 2019. At the time that Brandon went missing, he was 32 years old, weighing about 220 pounds and 6’2” in height. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, gray jeans, black Converse sneakers, a New England Patriots winter hat and a tan Carhart jacket with black writing on it. U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro announced his constituent service team will hold mobile office hours Friday from 12:00 noon to 2:00pm at the Town of Oneonta Town Hall in West Oneonta. State Police arrested 3 people after a fight at the Lantern Hill trailer park in Oneonta Saturday. An investigation by Troopers at the scene determined that 25 year old La-Tee Baker of Oneonta, 21 year old Bryanna Patterson of Oneonta, and 23 year old Bethany Brown of Delhi, were involved in a fight, both women sustained injuries, Brown was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital. Baker and Patterson were located by Troopers walking along State Highway 23 and were arrested. They were issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on November 21, 2023. After release from the hospital, Brown was charged with Assault, she was issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on December 5.
45 year old Kellie Sanderson of Walton, appeared in Delaware County Court and was arraigned on a sealed indictment. The 5-count indictment charged Sanderson with 3 counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing, Welfare Fraud & Grand Larceny, for submitting false applications to the Delaware County Department of Social Services on 3 separate occasions reporting incorrect household income to obtain public assistance benefits that she was not entitled to in an amount greater than $3,000. Sanderson pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released, the case is scheduled for a conference on November 13th.
The Sidney Democratic Committee is holding a Meet and Greet for Deirdre Hay, who is running on the Democratic line for NY State Supreme Court Justice for the 6th Judicial District, in the upcoming November 7th general election. Hay will meet with area residents at 6:30 in the Sidney Library Smart Community Room tonight. Hay is running for the seat against Republican candidate Cheryl Insinga. Also, Democratic Sidney Town Board Candidate Kevin Greene will also be participating.

The Defense & The Prosecution finished up their cases in the trial of Former Colonial Restaurant Owners Yaron Kweller & Jordan Rindgen today in Binghamton. Kweller is charged with criminal sexual abuse and rape, Rindgen is charged with criminal sex act and unlawfully dealing with a child. Closing arguments will start tomorrow morning in Broome County Court.
Binghamton University announced that they have canceled all of today’s classes due to an ongoing investigation. Officials issued an emergency message to students shortly before 9:00 This morning, as Campus Police were actively investigating an incident near the Bartle Library Tower. Officials issued a second alert canceling about a half an hour later canceling all classes. More information will be released later today.
State Police announced that no arrests were made during an Underage Drinking Initiative in Troop “C” in Otsego County on Friday October 27th. During the initiative, 13 businesses were checked. All 13 were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an under-aged operative. During the Initiative, retail establishments are checked using a trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or give a fake date of birth. When asked for ID, they must show their real ID.

The Broome County District Attorney's Office says 49-year-old Hasaan Coston was sentenced to 12 years in New York State prison after being found guilty of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and other related drug charges. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task force executed 2 search warrants Coston was found in possession cocaine, crack cocaine, baggies, a scale, and $1,200 from suspected drug sales.

Oneonta Police Department were investigating a noise complaint in the area of Spruce Street and Myrtle Avenue in the City of Oneonta, While investigating, officers heard what sounded like discharging a firearm. Officers were assisted by State Police, and State University Police, a search was conducted, they found no evidence of a firearms discharge. The investigation is ongoing, Anyone with additional information should call the Oneonta Police Department at (607) 432-1111.
Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested a Binghamton man following a fight with staff and customers at a restaurant & with Deputies during and after his arrest Sunday. 25 year old Hamail Waddell of Binghamton was placed in the patrol car, he began kicking the car doors and repeatedly striking his head against the car window, he was transported to the Broome County Sheriff’s office for processing, he kicked a door handle off, he was transported to Wilson Hospital for evaluation, where he verbally abused patients & staff, he was sedated & treated and returned to Central Arraignment & was charged with Criminal Mischief, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Disorderly Conduct, & Harassment, he was still in custidy Sunday night.
Attorney General Letitia James announced that the Office will make its Election Protection Hotline available for the upcoming November 7, 2023 election and during New York's early voting period, which began on Saturday & runs through Sunday, November 5th. Chenango County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 24 year old Nathaniel Rowe of Coventry for 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 3rd degree Burglary, Grand Larceny & Petty Larceny. Rowe is accused of illegally entering a garage & stealing a vehicle & Several Firearms. Deputies located the stolen vehicle at a residence, just a few miles away from crime scene, Rowe was inside the residence with the stolen firearms. Rowe was on parole at the time of his arrest, he was processed and was held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on his Warrant, he was ordered to appear in Town of Smithville court at a later date.

Justice Robert Putorti of the Village of Whitehall Court faces action in the state Court of Appeals, after he allegedly pulled a gun on a defendant in his court room. Putorti has been the Whitehall judge since 2014, he claimed that he acted in Self defense when defendant Brandon Wood appeared to rush the judge''s stand in 2015. The state Commission on Judicial Conduct became aware of the incident & conducted an investigation, it recommended Putorti's removal from judicial office, Putorti challenged the recommendation before the Court of Appeals, he has been suspended from duty with pay while waiting for his day in court. Wood claimed that he was chained to a bench in a hallway & could not rush the judge, he also claimed that Putorti flashed a gun under his robe.

Acting New York State Police Superintendent Steven Nigrelli has announced he's stepping down from office. Nigrelli was no longer under consideration for the permanent role, he plans to retire effective October 6th. A report from the Albany Times Union stated that Nigrelli was investigated for alleged harassment and discrimination complaints, he has served in law enforcement for 32 years.
22 year old Jacoyia Byrne of New York, was sentenced to a 3 year term of probation supervision for the crime of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. . Byrne was arrested May 5th for selling amphetamine to undercover officers with the Delhi Police Department. The Department of Probation recommended Byrne receive a period of probation supervision as punishment, Judge Burkert accepted the plea agreement and sentenced Byrne.
The opening game of the Eastern League Championship Series between the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and Erie Seawolves scheduled for Sunday at Mirabito Stadium has been postponed due to inclement weather in the forecast. The CDC’s has approved of an updated COVID-19 vaccine and they are urging New Yorkers to get the shot once it is available later this week. The 2023-24 vaccine was authorized by the federal Food and Drug Administration, it is expected to be available at pharmacies and physicians’ offices, as well as other health care providers, in the coming days.
Otsego County Department of Health announced that a skunk tested positive for rabies earlier this week. The skunk was found in a field in East Worcester, nearby farm animals were all boosted against rabies, there was no human exposure, more information is available at 547-4230 of go the Health Department page at otsegocounty.com
46 year old Lance Madsen of Bainbridge was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff's Office for several counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2 counts Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Reckless Driving, and several other Traffic Violations. Madsen failed to comply with deputies as they were attempting to stop him for traffic violations, he drove his vehicle in a reckless manner, at high rates of speed. Madsen was eventually taken into custody after stopping his vehicle in the driveway of his residence, he was found to have Methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, he was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.

The impending drop-off in federal funding would lead to over 250,000 children in New York State losing access to child care, would force over 5,700 child care centers across the state to close, forcing parents to cut their work hours or leave the workforce entirely and costing them $846 million in earnings as a result.
New York State welcomed a record 291.5 million visitors in 2022, the largest number of visitors in New York State’s history, generating more than $78.6 billion in direct spending and $123 billion in total economic impact. The State Cannabis Control Board voted to finalize the Office of Cannabis Management's proposed regulations for the adult-use cannabis market, a larger group of individuals and small businesses across the state will now be able to apply for cultivator, processor, distributor, microbusiness, and retail dispensary licenses beginning on October 4th.
A commission created last year to enforce ethics rules for New York state's employees and elected officials violates the state's constitution because it is too independent, New York Supreme Court Justice Thomas Marcelle said it would require an amendment to the state constitution to give that sort of power to an independent body. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been fighting an attempt by the Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government to force him to forfeit $5 million he received for writing a book about his administration’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that 2 people survived a plane crash in Delaware County Saturday Night in the town of Franklin. The pilot was 72 year old Ron Galuppo of Texas, the passenger was his son, 22 year old Nathan Galuppo, of Texas. Delaware County 911 was alerted by Air Traffic Control in Boston Massachusetts about a mayday transmission from a plane experiencing engine failure, they also received a call about a small plane crashing near a residence in Franklin. Both men crashed while attempting to fly home to Texas from Maine, they were taken to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton after they were able to escape the wreckage of their plane, they suffered only minor injuries, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Federal Aviation Administration with the investigation.
State Police and Ithaca Police held a press conference today regarding the disappearance of 33 year old Thomas Rath of Ithaca on May 20. The investigation eventually evolved into kidnapping and murder, with the investigation covering 2 area counties & the State of Maine. State Police Troop C Captain Lucas Anthony of the BCI unit explains:

Captain Anthony said that Rath lived in a homeless camp known as the "Jungle" at the time of his disappearance, Rath was familiar with some of the kidnappers. The names of the 10 charged were not released, they were all from the Ithaca area, more arrests are expected & the investigation is ongoing.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, the Otsego County Sheriff's Office & The Oneonta Police Department announced the arrests of 3 people of Phinaliz Communications LLC, who are accused of operating a long-running scheme to steal over $1 million from the Medicaid program. The 3 defendants were identified as 46 year old Philip Mtui of Mechanicsville, who owns the company, operations manager Mbaga Kaiza, and Dispatcher & Driver Tony Taylor, who were arrested last Thursday. Over a 4-year period, Mtui and Kaiza defrauded the Medicaid program by claiming payment for rides that never occurred, and double, triple, or quadruple billing for rides that did occur. Mtui and Kaiza were arraigned in Oneonta City Court for 1st degree Grand Larceny, both were held on $250,000 bail. Taylor was arrested on 1 count of conspiracy, he will be arraigned on September 19th, more arrests are expected.

Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a check the welfare on Interstate 88 in the Town of Sidney, for a man climbing on the bridge. Deputies subsequently located 43 year old Arthur Cotton of Sidney, who was wanted on an active arrest warrant out of Chenango County, for Sexual Misconduct. Cotton was arrested and turned over to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced a job fair will be held at the Southside Mall in Oneonta on Tuesday. The Job Fair will run from 2:00 to 4:00 PM & will feature numerous employees from throughout the region with job openings currently available.

On August 13th Deputies observed a car entering an intersection was nearly struck by another vehicle running a red light. Deputies conducted a traffic stop, McClenon had her driving privileges suspended and was operating the vehicle while intoxicated, she was released on appearance tickets and directed to appear at the Town of Walton court at a later date to answer for the charges.
Binghamton Police arrested Ismael Sanchez of Rockingham, North Carolina, who was wanted by Police in Richmond County, on an arrest warrant for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, robbery with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery. Sanchez was arrested after a search warrant was executed at a Wilson Street apartment by the Binghamton Metro SWAT team. He was taken to Binghamton Police Department where he was arraigned as a fugitive from justice and remanded to Broome County Jail pending extradition back to North Carolina.

24 year old Zachary Rowe of Harpursville appeared for arraignment on August 7th, on a 3-count indictment in Delaware County Court. Rowe was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for possessing Fentanyl & Methamphetamine with intent to sell, the drugs were in the presence of a 4 year old child. The case is scheduled for a conference in Delaware County Court on August 21, 2023.
The Otsego County Department of Health reported that a bat found in the town of Unadilla has tested positive for rabies. New York Supreme Court Justice Kevin Bryant issued a temporary restraining order Monday halting the state from issuing or processing marijuana dispensary licenses. A veterans' group lawsuit alleges the state's Office of Cannabis Management created a licensing system that improperly limits initial licenses to people with drug convictions rather than a wider category of social equity applicants, such as veterans. Another lawsuit from a Michigan group claims that New York's licensing system is unconstitutionally favors New Yorkers over out-of-state residents. Oral arguments will begin Friday in State Supreme Court.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the state will spend $108 million on the well-being of students, following a drop off of state scores & learning loss attributed to time missed in the classroom due to the pandemic. $100 million will go to school districts and BOCES to hire more teachers with specialized experience in managing and counteracting learning loss, another $8.3 million will go directly to expand school mental health clinics

The Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 42 year old Nathan Smith of Windsor for Burglary, Assault, Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, and Endangerment the welfare of a child charges, Smith is accused of breaking into a house & attacking a victim in front of children, on August 2nd. Deputies took Smith into custody, he was found with a small amount of methamphetamine, Smith was arraigned at central arraignment and released. He is due to appear in the Town of Windsor Court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 62 year old Kathleen Hibbard of Delhi after an investigation of a Motor Vehicle Accident. Deputies responded August 3rd to a Motor Vehicle Accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Delhi. Hibbard was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with a B.A.C of .08 or higher and moving from lane unsafely, she was ordered to appear in Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Upon arrival at the scene, responding deputies located Robinson in the nearby vicinity and detained him without incident. Robinson was arraigned at central arraignment and remains in custody pending future court action.
59 year old Valerie Alexander of Delhi, appeared in Delaware County Court, she pleaded guilty to Welfare Fraud and was sentenced to 9 months incarceration. New York Supreme Court Justice Kevin Bryant issued a temporary restraining order Monday halting the state from issuing or processing marijuana dispensary licenses. A veterans' group lawsuit alleges the state's Office of Cannabis Management created a licensing system that improperly limits initial licenses to people with drug convictions rather than a wider category of social equity applicants, such as veterans. Another lawsuit from a Michigan group claims that New York's licensing system is unconstitutionally favors New Yorkers over out-of-state residents. Oral arguments will begin Friday in State Supreme Court.
Governor Kathy Hochul said the state will spend $108 million on the well-being of students, following a drop off of state scores & learning loss attributed to time missed in the classroom due to the pandemic. $100 million will go to school districts and BOCES to hire more teachers with specialized experience in managing and counteracting learning loss, another $8.3 million will go directly to expand school mental health clinics

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25 year old Tyler Gano of Worcester for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, following an investigation in to a report of motor vehicle that was stolen from the Hartwick Commons parking lot in October of 2022. The motor vehicle was located abandoned in Worcester, Gano was located Saturday in Oneonta and was taken in to custody by deputies. The defendant was processed and lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.
Delaware County Sheriff's deputies arrested 34 year old Travis Loucks of Hobart on Friday, after a Deputy observed a vehicle traveling at 75 mph on State Route 10 in Delhi. in a posted 55 mph zone. Loucks' Drivers License & vehicle registration was suspended, he was ticketed for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator, speeding & several other charges, Loucks was released & is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.
Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that 36 year old Robert Simpson of Binghamton was sentenced to 9 years in State prison after pleading guilty to 1st degree Robbery. Simpson forcibly stole property from another person while brandishing a knife on August 14th 2022 in Binghamton, he was identified hours later through video surveillance of the area of the crime. Simpson will also serve 5 years of post release supervision.

David is described as a black woman about 5'9" tall and about 180 pounds, with black hair & brown eyes, she was last seen with 35 year old Michael David, who was driving a white Jeep Cherokee, they may be headed through this area heading for New York City. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said that the largest portion of money left on the table was $109.4 million in rebates, following an error on 490,875 claims that incorrectly showed that no Medicaid payment had been made, making them ineligible for rebates, another mistake with Magellan resulted in missing out on $9.6 million in rebates.

Delaware County District Attorney Office announced that 46-year-old Justin Valk of Davenport, was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury for allegedly murdering his wife Stephanie Valk on or about July 29- August 1, 2022, in the Town of Davenport. In addition to the 2 Murder counts, Valk was charged with Reckless Endangerment & Assault. Valk will be arraigned on the Grand Jury Charges in Delaware County Court on April 10, he is being held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility.
40 year old Derek Wignall of Hancock appeared in Delaware County Court Monday and pleaded guilty to Criminal Contempt, for allegedly violating an order of protection. After arraignment, Wignall pleaded guilty to the charge, he admitted that he disobeyed the order of protection by threatening violence against the protected party, he will be sentenced to serve 6 months in the Delaware County Correctional Facility, and then 5 years of felony probation supervision. Wignall was committed to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department following his guilty plea, Sentencing is scheduled for May 15th.

The United States Department of Justice announced Tuesday that 30 year old Shelby Ortiz of Maryland, New York was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison and a 20-year term of supervised release, for distributing child pornography. Ortiz also will be required to register as a sex offender upon her release from prison. Ortiz pleaded guilty in October 2022, she admitted that she subjected a 7-month-old boy to sexual contact which was video recorded and sent to to a person living in Florida with whom she was participating in an online and telephone dominant/submissive sexual relationship. The case was investigated by U.S. Homeland Security, the Oneonta Police Department, and the State Police
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced that 27 year old Brandon Morse of Edmeston was charged with cashing a stolen check last month was arrested again over the weekend for falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement. Morse is accused of lying to authorities about a man outside of his residence with a gun. Prior to the February arrest, Morse allegedly stole a $3,500 check from a local business and cashed it illegally. Morse was released with an appearance ticket and is due back in court at a later date.

Delaware County Board of Supervisors were notified that the federal civil rights suit filed against the County by former Social Services Commissioner Dana Scuderi-Hunter, was dismissed by the U.S. District Court Monday. Scuderi-Hunter had filed the civil rights suit last year, claiming that the County had violated her 1st Amendment rights; that she was denied due process as part of her 2019 dismissal; and that the County’s actions were retaliatory as a result of her testimony during a Family Court proceeding. U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Kahn, ordered the claims made by Scuderi-Hunter be dismissed on the basis that the claims had already been litigated and decided by the State Appellate Division in February 2022, she additionally appealed that decision, which was denied last June, she then sought an appeal from the State Court of Appeals which was also denied. Judge Kahn also dismissed Scuderi-Hunter’s claims that County Attorney Amy Merklen had a conflict of interest in carrying out her duties as assigned.
The Village of Sidney Police Benevolent Association endorsed Acting Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith in this year's race for the the Delaware County District Attorney's Position. The Association stated that they reached this decision following an increase in communication, transparency & compassion from the DA's office & Staff since Smith became the Acting DA January 1st. Smith faces a primary in June from fellow Republican Joe Ermeti of Sidney, who announced his candidacy recently for the DA position.

Delaware County District Attorney's office announced that 71 year old Vincent Balsamo of Walton was arraigned on a sealed indictment in Delaware County Court Monday. The Indictment charges Balsamo with 2nd degree Manslaughter, 2nd degree Assault & Reckless Endangerment, for repeatedly choking, strangling & slapping & striking 52 year old April Kestner of Honesdale Pennsylvania at his residence in the Town of Walton in December 7th of 2022. Balsamo faces 5 to 15 years in jail on the Manslaughter charge, he was sent to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.
The City of Oneonta announced that there will be one lane traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Gardner Place in order to tie the new sewer pipe into an existing sanitary sewer manhole. Temporary traffic signals with stop bars will be used to direct traffic and maintain a steady flow. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to disabled vehicle on County Highway 26 in the Town of Hamden. During the course of the investigation Sheriff’s Deputies identified the driver as 21 year old Edwards Khali of Delhi, Deputies discovered that Khali’s vehicle was suspended due to an insurance lapse. Khali was charged with with Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended Registration & Unregistered Vehicle, he was released on an appearance ticket, and was directed to appear before the Town of Hamden Court at a later date to answer for the charge.

The United States Department of Justice announced Tuesday that 30 year old Shelby Ortiz of Maryland, New York was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison and a 20-year term of supervised release, for distributing child pornography. Ortiz also will be required to register as a sex offender upon her release from prison. Ortiz pleaded guilty in October 2022, she admitted that she subjected a 7-month-old boy to sexual contact which was video recorded and sent to to a person living in Florida with whom she was participating in an online and telephone dominant/submissive sexual relationship. The case was investigated by U.S. Homeland Security, the Oneonta Police Department, and the State Police
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced that 27 year old Brandon Morse of Edmeston was charged with cashing a stolen check last month was arrested again over the weekend for falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement. Morse is accused of lying to authorities about a man outside of his residence with a gun. Prior to the February arrest, Morse allegedly stole a $3,500 check from a local business and cashed it illegally. Morse was released with an appearance ticket and is due back in court at a later date.

The 2023 Norwich St. Baldrick's "Brave the Shave" fundraising event was held at the Norwich American Legion Post 189 Saturday, the fundraiser to support childhood cancer research raised $49,236 this year with the event. Delaware County Board of Supervisors were notified that the federal civil rights suit filed against the County by former Social Services Commissioner Dana Scuderi-Hunter, was dismissed by the U.S. District Court Monday. Scuderi-Hunter had filed the civil rights suit last year, claiming that the County had violated her 1st Amendment rights; that she was denied due process as part of her 2019 dismissal; and that the County’s actions were retaliatory as a result of her testimony during a Family Court proceeding. U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Kahn, ordered the claims made by Scuderi-Hunter be dismissed on the basis that the claims had already been litigated and decided by the State Appellate Division in February 2022, she additionally appealed that decision, which was denied last June, she then sought an appeal from the State Court of Appeals which was also denied. Judge Kahn also dismissed Scuderi-Hunter’s claims that County Attorney Amy Merklen had a conflict of interest in carrying out her duties as assigned.
The Village of Sidney Police Benevolent Association endorsed Acting Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith in this year's race for the the Delaware County District Attorney's Position. The Association stated that they reached this decision following an increase in communication, transparency & compassion from the DA's office & Staff since Smith became the Acting DA January 1st. Smith faces a primary in June from fellow Republican Joe Ermeti of Sidney, who announced his candidacy recently for the DA position.

Delaware County District Attorney's office announced that 71 year old Vincent Balsamo of Walton was arraigned on a sealed indictment in Delaware County Court Monday. The Indictment charges Balsamo with 2nd degree Manslaughter, 2nd degree Assault & Reckless Endangerment, for repeatedly choking, strangling & slapping & striking 52 year old April Kestner of Honesdale Pennsylvania at his residence in the Town of Walton in December 7th of 2022. Balsamo faces 5 to 15 years in jail on the Manslaughter charge, he was sent to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.
The City of Oneonta announced that there will be one lane traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Gardner Place in order to tie the new sewer pipe into an existing sanitary sewer manhole. Temporary traffic signals with stop bars will be used to direct traffic and maintain a steady flow.
