The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 people on a variety of felony charge. On December 15th, deputies responded to a burglary complaint in the Town of Binghamton, they found fresh footprints in the snow, signs of a break-in and smoke billowing from inside the house due to an active fire. State Police & Binghamton Fire Department responded, Deputies followed footprints and found evidence of stolen items, they used a drone to & located 37 year old Anthony Storti of Conklin, who was found to be in possession of narcotics, the investigation uncovered that Storti had been in the residence, left a vape behind and he set a fire inside. 24 year old Allyson Russell of Endicott, was identified as an accomplice in the burglary and arson. Both were charged with a host of felonies including Burglary, Arson criminal possession of a weapon, Grand Larceny & criminal possession of a controlled substance, they face court action shortly.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 44 year old Luis Calixto of Norwich, following a complaint from a local business regarding a larceny in progress. Calixto allegedly removed items from their packaging and attempted to conceal them and attempted to avoid store personnel and law enforcement. Deputies discovered that Calixto was in possession of small wax envelopes containing a white powder-like substance, as well as a small canister containing a white crystal-like substance, he was processed and arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail on charges of Burglary, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Mischief and Tampering with Physical Evidence
Trout Creek Fire Department responded at about 11:20 Tuesday morning for a tractor trailer into a house. Nobody was home at the residence and that the driver of the truck was not injured. Masonville Volunteer Fire Department, State DOT, State Police, Delaware County Sheriff's Office, NYSEG and a code enforcement officer also responded, State Highway 206 was closed, All units were back in service around 3:30 PM.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced more than $463 million has been awarded statewide through the State's Regional Economic Development Council initiative. Long Island, the Mohawk Valley, New York City and the Southern Tier were chosen as winners of the inaugural $150 million Advancing Collaboration for High-impact Initiatives for Economic Visions & Expansion competition, The Southern Tier was awarded more than $26.4 million to support 27 projects.

A Chenango County Grand Jury indicted Richard Clemons on multiple charges for alleged sex crimes involving a young child. The indictment charges Clemons with 2 counts of 2nd-degree rape, multiple counts of promoting a sexual performance by a child, possessing a sexual performance by a child, tampering with physical evidence, forcible touching and sexual abuse. The crimes were reported in the City of Norwich in mid-to-late October.
Starting January 1, New York State’s Foam Ban will be expanded to include polystyrene foam coolers and other containers designed to be used for cold storage. The new law encourages New Yorkers to use sustainable container and packaging options, no covered food service provider, manufacturer or store will be allowed to sell, offer for sale, or distribute expanded polystyrene containers.
The Arc Otsego has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Otsego County to establish its Essential Needs Fund. The grant will allow The Arc Otsego to distribute direct financial support for urgent housing-related expenses, including rent and utility bills. Assistance will be provided on a case-by-case basis following a short application process, ensuring support is fair, timely, and tailored to each individual’s situation.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that enhanced real property tax exemptions for Seniors. The law allows localities to provide a property tax exemption for senior citizens who meet the income eligibility limits, up to 65% of the assessed valuation of their properties, the maximum percentage of exemption local governments have been able to offer senior citizens was set at 50% and has not been raised in decades, which could translate into savings of up to $300 annually for the average senior.
State Police arrested 29 year old Dylan Whitman of Oxford following an accident early Saturday on North Road in Oxford. Whitman was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, DWI, & Operating a Vehicle with a BAC of .08 or higher. Whitman was also wanted on a criminal Warrant from Oneonta, and he faces court action shortly.
SUNY Delhi is receiving a $32 million investment from Empire State Development, and the SUNY Construction Fund to build a new mechatronics facility. SUNY Chancellor John King announced that many mechatronics students at Delhi can secure jobs at major local companies like Chobani and IBM. SUNY Delhi’s North Hall will be the site of the program, which will prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing. The 15,000 square-foot facility is expected to open in 2030.

The legislation would also require providers to offer follow-up screenings or other diagnostic services. Almost 14,000 New Yorkers are diagnosed with lung cancer and about 7,400 die from this disease each year.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Jacob Roman of Walton with 2 counts of Grand Larceny, and 1 count of Burglary, On October 18th, Deputies were dispatched to Benton Avenue in the Village of Walton for a reported Burglary in Progress where they located, identified and arrested Roman. On November 21st, Deputies located and arrested Roman on new charges after it was alleged that he had taken the victim’s credit card and made numerous purchases on the card which amounted to over $1,500 without authorization. Roman was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.
Gene Schmidt of Unadilla & his family will once again offer a free Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day at the Sidney Elks Lodge, Schmidt said that do need some volunteers to help with preparation, serving and cleaning up:

The patrols will include both visible enforcement, such as checkpoints, as well as unmarked vehicles mingle with traffic to catch distracted drivers.
The 14th Annual Holiday Craft Fair will be held by the Bainbridge Guilford Teacher's Association on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the BG High School Gym. Over 40 local crafter & artisans will participate, there will be raffle & door prizes, people are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, pet food or a hygiene product as a donation & to get a ticket for a door prize.

33 year old Corey Green of Vestal was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 19 years in federal prison for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy spanning the United States. Green admitted that he possessed, distributed, and conspired to distribute large quantities of fentanyl, heroin & Methamphetamine in and around Broome County, he also admitted to possessing 3 handguns and 2 AK-47 style weapons to further his drug-trafficking activities, while being prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous convictions, & conspiring to launder his drug-trafficking proceeds. Green was sentenced to a 19 year prison term, concurrent 3 and 5-year terms of post-release supervision, and a money judgment of over $185,000 of unrecovered proceeds from his drug trafficking. Co-conspirator Michael Jacobs of Endicott, was previously sentenced to 10 years and 10 months term of imprisonment & 5 years of post-release supervision.
21 year old Joziah Worthington was sentenced following his convictions after trial in Broome County Court, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd & 3rd Degree, to 9 years in a State Correctional Facility with 5 years of post-release supervision for 1 charge, and 7 years in prison with 3 years of post-release supervision for other charge, to run concurrently. Worthington was arrested by state Police in 2024 in Johnson City, for illegally possessing a firearm as well as a large capacity ammunition feeding device capable of accepting 31 rounds, loaded with 25 rounds, Worthington’s DNA being found on the firearm.
Chobani announced that at the East Park Bandstand in Norwich last Saturday, following the 30th annual Norwich Parade of Lights, More than 30 Chobani volunteers distributed 3,000 cases of Chobani products, to thank the community. Chobani will also participate in the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Hyde Park in New Berlin on December 6th, employees plan to give out over 200 cases of yogurt to local families.
NBT Bank presented the United Way of Mid Rural New York with a check for $190,000 to help fund programs that provide financial stability, education and health resources for individuals and families in Chenango, Delaware, Madison and Otsego counties. NBT Bank employees donated $95,000 to the United Way’s annual campaign through personal contributions, and the company matched that amount with an additional $95,000.

41 Year old Trevor Metterhauser of Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to attempted aggravated sexual abuse, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children, and multiple counts of possession of child pornography. The case involves 2 small children, 1 in upstate New York & the Other in Texas. Metterhauser admitted that he conspired with Brandon Whitford to sexually exploit a 4-year-old girl in New York, In December 2022, he traveled to Texas to sexually assault a 2-year-old child and to record that abuse. When Metterhauser was arrested he had multiple electronic devices that contained the sexual assaults; and child pornography he obtained from the internet.
State Police today announced that they issued 13,036 tickets statewide during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period. Troopers conducted sobriety checkpoints, deployed DWI patrols, and ticketed drivers who were using handheld electronic devices. Troopers arrested 247 people for DWI and investigated 1,277 crashes, including 2 fatal crashes. In Troop C, there were 1232 ticketed, including 21 DWI Arrests, 434 for speeding, 41 for distracted driving & 35 violators of the "Move Over" Law.
The "Pawstruck" fundraiser for Delaware Valley Humane Society will be this Sunday at Awestruck Ciders in the Sidney Industrial Park, with a variety of activities to raise money, WCDO"s Grace Benkovitz is one of the organizers of the event:

Norwich Police responded Tuesday to the report of an Emu running loose on Chenango Avenue. The Emu was eventually contained to a fenced in yard on Francis Avenue, which kept the bird away from downtown traffic. The owner was notified, RTG of Norwich assisted in the effort and the emu was successfully brought inside the owner's trailer, where it was returned to its home in Bainbridge.

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald declared that influenza is now prevalent in New York State, health care personnel who have not received this year’s flu vaccine MUST wear masks in areas where patients may be present. The Department has a total of 17,783 positive flu cases, Outside of New York City, week-over-week flu cases are up 114%, to 3,619. Hospitalizations doubled to 413 across the State. Current influenza information is available at health.ny.gov.
Attorney General Letitia James won a court order preventing the federal government from enforcing a provision in the so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" that would strip Planned Parenthood of its Medicaid funds, jeopardizing health care for millions of low-income patients across the country. Attorney General James joined a coalition of 21 other attorneys general and the governor of Pennsylvania in suing the Department of Health and Human Services to block the provision, The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a ruling granting the coalition's motion for a preliminary injunction, ordering HHS to continue paying Medicaid funds to all states and clinics in the coalition.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating 25 year old Alora Stott of Oneonta, she is wanted on active warrants for failing to appear for scheduled court dates at Sidney Village Court & Chenango County Court. Stott failed to appear in Sidney on charges of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, from a January 2025 arrest where Stott was in possession of a stolen checkbook and multiple forged and stolen checks. Stott is also wanted by Chenango County Court for failing to appear on charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, where she & 3 others were found in possession of a stolen Pickup Truck, Anyone with information regarding Stott’s whereabouts is asked to contact State Police at (607) 561-7400.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating 25 year old Alora Stott of Oneonta, she is wanted on active warrants for failing to appear for scheduled court dates at Sidney Village Court & Chenango County Court. Stott failed to appear in Sidney on charges of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, from a January 2025 arrest where Stott was in possession of a stolen checkbook and multiple forged and stolen checks. A Chenango County Grand Jury indicted 21 year old Kaylub Rifanburg of Norwich for 2nd & 3rd degree criminal possession of a weapon and possession of burglar’s tools. The indictment states that on August 25, Rifanburg was stopped by Norwich Police following a report of an erratic driver, Police discovered a loaded 9mm pistol, a large-capacity magazine, and a backpack containing ski masks and a lock pick. He faces court action on the Grand Jury charges at a later date.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office and family members of a missing Vestal man are still seeking answers to help locate 69 year old Eddie Rouhana, who been missing since January 11th. Rouhana was last seen at his business, Cars-R-US, located at 1170 of Upper Front Street in the Town of Chenango. Cell phone records show his phone was last used later that same day. The Rouhana family is offering a $20,000 reward for any information that leads directly to Eddie Rouhana’s whereabouts. In Oneida County Court today, 4 more former corrections officers received prison sentences for their involvement in the death of Marcy Correctional Facility inmate Robert Brooks last December. Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina pleaded guilty to manslaughter and were each sentenced to 22 years in prison, while Michael Mashaw and David Walters pleaded guilty to lesser charges in connection with the Brooks killing and they were sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison.
40 Year Old Jeremiah Raub from New Milford Pennsylvania was sentenced in Broome County to 20 years to life for 2nd degree Murder, plus 20 years to life for Arson with sentences to run concurrently in a New York State correctional facility. Raub was found guilty at trial in August in connection with the fatal March 17, 2011, fire at 20 Milford Street in the City of Binghamton, Raub intentionally set a fire in a recycling bin at the residence, the fire caused the death of 17 year old Jeffrey Aissa, who was inside the home at the time of the incident.
A State Police Patrol car was struck by another motorist at about 8:10 AM this morning on State Route 17C near Chaumont Drive. Police state that a Toyota Camry driven by an unidentified 69 year old female failed to yield the right of way while making a left turn into a parking lot & collided with the Trooper's vehicle, The Trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital & was treated and released. The operator of the Toyota was also transported to the hospital.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand demanded that the Trump administration immediately release federal LIHEAP funding, which helps low-income New Yorkers heat their homes through the state’s Home Energy Assistance Program:

LIHEAP helps over a million low-income households across the state afford their energy bills and make cost-effective repairs to their heating systems. The program is administered by the state but funded by the federal government. States typically receive their LIHEAP allocations from the Department of Health and Human Services by early November, but funding was put on hold during the government shutdown. The funding bill that ended the government shutdown included the same level of funding as last year, but the administration has not released the $4 billion allocated for the program.
35 year old Kyron Milner of Binghamton was found guilty by a jury for 3rd degree Burglary and Resisting Arrest. On December 28, 2024, the Binghamton Police Department responded to a business alarm at 200 Court Street in the City of Binghamton. State Police Organized Retail Theft Task Force has recovered more than $2.6 million in stolen goods statewide since launching new initiatives to curb retail theft in April 2024. Across 1,006 operations, State Police and local law enforcement partners have made 1,224 arrests and filed 2,146 charges, which translates to a 13% decrease in retail theft year-over-year in municipalities outside of New York City, for the 1st 6 months of 2025.
Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 22 year old Ross Guglielmetti of Deposit,on a number of charges, following a pursuit through Broome, Chenango & Otsego Counties. Guglielmetti was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Tampering with Physical Evidence, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Reckless Endangerment & resisting arrested, he face court action at a later date.
The New York State Department of Health has sent out an alert, warning New Yorkers or a new scam. Health department officials stated that Telephone scammers are mimicking the Department, some New Yorkers have been receiving phone calls from people identifying themselves as a Department of Health Employee, they will ask for information about a controlled substance prescription, adding to the confusion, the caller ID may even say the caller is from the Department of Health. Officials said that the Health Department will not make such calls to private citizens, they advise people who receive these calls to hang up & alert local law enforcement.

The City of Norwich Police Department arrested 51 year old Delf King of Norwich for 2nd & 4rd Degree Robbery, plus criminal mischief & Grand larceny, following an investigation of a robbery in the City on April 6th. King is accused of attacking a victim on East Main Street, causing multiple bleeding injuries, & forcibly stole the victim's cell phone, and smashed it, he then retreated to his residence, retrieved a firearm, and pointed it at the victim. King appeared in Chenango County Arraignment Court where bail was set at $5,000 cash, He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility and will appear in City of Norwich Court at a later date.
The Next "Her Health Matters" talk will be held today & it will focus on Pelvic Health. Physical Therapist Allison O’Neill will be the guest speaker, at the Canasawacta Country Club, in Norwich. Chobani announced that the City of Rome Planning Board approved Chobani's plan to build a facility, consisting of 8 buildings. A new design was required as the FAA said parts of the original facility were too close to the runway of the Griffiss Airport, and the 130 foot building is being moved to another part of the campus.

Norwich Police arrested 61 year old Donald Hults of Syracuse, who is a Level 3 Sex Offender, following an investigation into a reported sexual abuse of a child. Norwich Police investigated a complaint that Hults had arrived uninvited at a July 4th gathering in Norwich where he knew nobody in attendance, and inappropriately touched a 10-year-old child. Hults was located in Syracuse he was interviewed by Norwich Police detectives, and was taken into custody and he was charged with 2 counts of Sexual Abuse, plus Forcible Touching, & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Hults was arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility, where he is being held without bail pending further court proceedings.
Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Brittney Hall of Harpursville, for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of Narcotics with Intent to Sell, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, following a traffic stop in the Town of Union. State DEC announced more than $1.72 million in grants to 6 land trusts for 9 projects that help conserve local forests. The land trusts will purchase new conservation easements that will protect air and water quality, preserve wildlife habitat and biodiversity, support sustainable forest management, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities for the public. Locally, the Otsego Land Trust, will get $54,250 to purchase a conservation easement on the 41-acre Burr Forest property in the town of Westford, adjacent to Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park. The easement property is 90 percent forested, and includes wetlands and hemlock stands, along with large concentrations of native plants.
On November 24, Haley Hubbard and Rendezvous Lounge at 158 Main Street in Afton will donate a frozen turkey and fixings to 25 local families in Afton, They have chosen 25 local families that will received a Thanksgiving dinner, Hubbard told WCDO news about this effort to help others:

Local Governments, Transit Agencies, Public Land Agencies, Tribal Governments are eligible, the State Department of Transportation will be accepting applications for this funding opportunity through March 12th 2026.
