Governor Cuomo announced that the New York Air National Guard is preparing to deploy 75 Airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing to assist in the response to Hurricane Michael, which is hitting the Florida panhandle today. The Airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing will deploy to Gulfport, Mississippi with one HC-130 search and rescue aircraft, one HH-60 Pave Hawk Rescue helicopter and two inflatable rescue boats. In addition, the New York Army National Guard is preparing to deploy 2 heavy lift helicopters to Tallahassee, Florida with 20 Soldiers. The HC-130 can conduct search operations from the air and can refuel helicopters in flight, which extends the range of the helicopters.
Sidney area residents over 65 can get assistance with medical bills of prescription costs through the Mary MacKinnon Trust Fund. Community Bank Trust Department Spokesperson Julia Goff explains:

Delaware County Sheriff's Department and State DOT Inspectors conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on State Highway 30 in the Town of Colchester. 3 Inspections were conducted; Deputies issued 17 summonses for various safety violations including unsafe tires, uninspected motor vehicle, unregistered vehicle, loose cargo, spreading debris on the highway, & inadequate brakes. 2 of the vehicles were taken out of service, 1 driver was arrested for a displaying a forged commercial motor vehicle inspection certificate and issued multiple summons returnable to the Town of Colchester Court.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division arrested 46 year old Michael Lynch of Sidney following the execution of a search warrant at his County Highway 23, Town of Sidney, and residence. Members of the Criminal Investigation Division, acting on a tip, obtained a search warrant for Lynch's residence, they seized marijuana plants, drying marijuana and a number of rifles and shotguns, Lynch was charged with criminal possession of marijuana & unlawful cultivation of cannabis, he was issued an appearance ticket for Town of Sidney Court at a later date.
The Regional Economic Development Council awards will include $690,000 for the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, located on the site of the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair held 50 years ago. Bethel Woods will use the state funding for the 50th anniversary event for next year, which is planned as a 3-day festival like the original event.
The Otsego County Health Department will hold the next Rabies Vaccination clinic tonight in Otego. The clinic will be held at the Otego Fire Department from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. More information is available at 547-4230.
The Broome County Health Department has confirmed 2 cases of the West Nile Virus in recent weeks. Both Patients were hospitalized and both are recovering. Mild cases usually feature a fever, headache, body aches and occasionally skin rash or swollen glands, more serious cases include high fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness and an altered mental status. Public health officials say the key is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, through insect repellent, screens and the elimination of standing water.
The Governor’s Administration and Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig announced an October 11 roundtable event in Oneonta to discuss the upcoming 2020 Census and steps to ensure a full count of all New Yorkers. The discussion will be led by Mayor Herzig and Richard Tobe, Governor Cuomo’s Director of Special Intergovernmental Projects, it is open to the public and will take place Thursday at 2:00 PM at the Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center on Market Street and more information is available at ny.gov/programs/2020-census.

Governor Cuomo today announced that the New York National Guard is preparing to send 10 soldiers and two UH-60 Blackhawk Medivac Helicopters with 30 days of medical supplies to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina to assist with response and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Florence. 50 additional Airmen have also been deployed from the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard. The state's incident management team is also ready to assist with response and recovery efforts including command and control, planning, logistics and administration activities, operational coordination, obtaining situational information and reporting, incident action planning, GIS mapping, and logistical support for ongoing response operations. 100 additional National Guard Members are on standby.
The have been some changes made within the Sidney Fire Department, as the MacDonald Hose Company was closed & the equipment was moved to the Main River Street location, which then forced a move by the Sidney Emergency Squad. Sidney EMS Spokesman Ray Baker explains:

Baker said that the Emergency Squad is still looking for their own permanent location with a garage for their vehicles, one of the sites being considered is the Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall site at Patterson & Division Streets.
The Delaware County Democratic committee will host their 3rd annual community barbecue Sunday at the Hamden Town Hall Pavilion. The event will run from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, area Democratic candidates, are schedule to attend, including 19th congressional district candidate Antonio Delgado.
The Greater Afton Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual fundraising golf tournament Sunday at 9:00 AM at the Afton Golf Course; Proceeds raised this year will benefit the Afton Community Theater.
The Sidney Center 9th Annual Tractor Parade will be held in the hamlet tomorrow. Tractors, Doodlebugs & Antique vehicles are expected to participate, a chicken Barbecue is also scheduled. The parade will start at 12:00 PM; money raised will go for Agricultural scholarships & to benefit local Agriculture organization.
The Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York will begin their series of walking events this weekend, with the Leatherstocking Walk to End Alzheimer's in Oneonta. The walk is presented by New York Central Mutual Insurance, it will be held tomorrow at Neahwa Park in Oneonta starting at 2:00 pm. More information is available at alz.org.

Local State Assembly incumbents Cliff Crouch & Bill Magee won their Primary challenges by large margins. Otsego County Sheriff Richard Devlin Jr. won his Primary election for the Republican nomination over challenger Robert Fernandez.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced that TEDxOneonta will host a “Ted” talk event tonight at the Goodrich Theater at the SUNY Oneonta campus. A variety of topics will be covered, tickets are available at tedxoneonta.com.
The State DOT has notified the City of Oneonta staff that a consultant contracted by DOT will perform a “peak-hour turn-movement study” at the Main Street intersection with the James F. Lettis Highway, beginning next Wednesday, and continuing around the clock for several days. The study’s duration will depend upon weather conditions. Video cameras, which will be mounted on 20-foot-tall poles, will be installed at the intersection on Tuesday; NYSDOT officials emphasized that cameras will record only movements of metal objects, and are not capable of identifying pedestrians, motorists, specific vehicles, or license plates.
The Unadilla Rotary Club will hold their annual Autumn Fest this Saturday. The event will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Community Field.
The American Legion Riders in Oneonta Post 259 is hosting their 16th annual Legacy Run tomorrow to support the American Legion Legacy Scholarship. The events begins at the Legion Post 259, registration is only $20 per rider, with a breakfast available for $10 before the ride from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. Registration will be open from 9:00 until 10:30am; preregistration is available at ALRPOST259.ORG/LEGACY.
