21 year old Matthew Bartosik of Conklin, pleaded guilty in a fourteen-count indictment in Broome County Court, to Murder, Attempted Murder, Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Criminal Use of a Firearm Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 1st degree Assault, on January 3, 2025, State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to 58 Leslie Avenue in Conklin for a domestic complaint, where a family argument escalated, during which Bartosik shot his uncle, Michael Lewis, multiple times, causing his death & his cousin Jessica Lewis multiple times in the head and back, she underwent surgery and survived. As Law Enforcement approached to reach the barricaded victims and apprehend Bartosik, he fired at the officers. Bartosik will be sentenced on November 14, in Broome County Court and faces a sentence of up to 50 years to life in State Prison.


U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer met with Oneonta Job Corps students and staff Thursday, Schumer explained that the Trump administration is targeting Job Corps centers for closure & completely eliminate funding for the program. Schumer said the Senate Appropriations Committee has passed a bipartisan bill out of committee that protects funding for Job Corps for next year, and now is calling on the House to follow suit. The Oneonta Job Corps employs 120 people in Oneonta.


Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad will hold a Milford Fire Benefit Train on August 17th, with 100% of ticket sales donated to the Milford Fire Victims Fund. Railroad President Bruce Hodges explains:

State Police arrested 62 year old Kenneth Friedlander of Oneonta for Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief, Menacing and Resisting Arrest, after Troopers were dispatched to Oneida Village Mobile Home Park in the town of Oneonta. Friedlander is accused of attempting to set a trailer on fire with a paper bag that he set on fire, and threatening to kill people, he barricaded himself in a bedroom, when the Troopers made contact with him, he charged at the Troopers with a pair of scissors, he continued to resist arrest, even after a taser was deployed but was ultimately placed in handcuffs. Friedlander was processed and was transported to the Otsego County Jail for Central Arraignment.


On Tuesday the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group executed a search warrant on Hickory Street in the Town of Triangle, they seized Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, narcotic Pills, over $40,000 in cash, plus Scales and Packaging Materials. 22 year old Kalysa Drury of Binghamton and 62 year old Randy Glezen of the Town of Triangle were each charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, both were arraigned remain in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility. The total street value of narcotics is estimated at about $7,000.


Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of phase 2 of the STAR program benefit season. Eligible homeowners in communities with school tax due dates in August or September will start receiving their STAR benefit in the coming weeks, most homeowners will receive a check between $350 and $600. Most seniors eligible for an Enhanced STAR credit will receive a check between $700 and $1,500. More information is available at ny.gov/STAR.

The autopsy of Melina Frattolin was performed Monday, the preliminary results are that the 9 year old died from Asphyxia due to drowning & Homicide. State Police are asking for the public's help in gathering additional video evidence or eyewitness accounts of the Toyota Prius driven by 45 year old Luciano Frattolin as they traveled from July 11, until July 19, on the I-87 Northway between Exits 28 through exit 20 during the evening hours of July 19, the evidence can be sent by email to crimetip@troopers.ny.gov. Luciano Frattolin was arrested and charged with Murder and Concealment of a Human Corpse, he is being held in the Essex County Jail.


NYSEG announced that a combination of hotter-than-average temperatures and rising electricity supply prices could result in a higher bill this summer. In addition to increased usage due to warmer weather, the cost to produce energy is also expected to rise, customers may see an estimated 6.5% increase in their bills between June and September compared to the same period last year. The Company also has requested a rate hike, Governor Hochul & local Congressman Josh Riley are calling on the Public Service Commission to deny another NYSEG rate hike.
