The public is invited to join the Bassett Healthcare Network in saluting Dr. William Streck today. 3 receptions will be held today on the Bassett Medical Center terrace in Cooperstown from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.; noon to 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Dr. Streck will retire from Bassett July 1st.


The Sidney Police Department advises that the following parking restrictions and street closings will be in effect for the Hometown Day Parade Saturday.  No Parking rules in effect on Main Street and River Street from 7:00 AM to the conclusion of the parade.  Streets closed to traffic will be at 10:00 AM, Circle Drive from Fox Street to West Main Street, at 11:30 Main Street at State Route 7, West Main Street from Loomis Drive to Main Street, East Main Street from Beale to Main Street & River Street from Colegrove to Main Street.


The Oneonta Farmers’ Market celebrates Dairy Month Saturday, at the Main Street Plaza with free tasting of local dairy products. The next Delaware County free rabies clinic will be held today.  The clinic will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Tompkins Town Highway Garage.

The South New Berlin Fire Department responded to a house fire on State Highway 23, at around 4:00 this morning. Fire fighters from Morris, New Berlin, Norwich & Mount Upton assisted South New Berlin firefighters at the scene.   Firefighters remained on the scene into the late morning hours, more details are expected to be released after investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.


Governor Cuomo kicked off his re-election bid yesterday, touting his record on taxes, the economy and social issues. Cuomo offered a list of accomplishments during his first term, citing an improving upstate economy, ending the gridlock at the state Capitol and pushing progressive ideas that he said makes New York a leader in the nation. Cuomo got a higher minimum wage and the lowest middle-class income taxes since 1953. He said will push for better rights for immigrants and public financing of campaigns, as well as expanding infrastructure projects if re-elected. Cuomo faces Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino in November.


State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said he wants lawmakers to accelerate increases to the minimum wage and pass the Dream Act before adjourning their session next month. Silver said he doesn't want to wait until next year to pass the Dream Act, which would extend state financial aid to students in the country illegally. Silver also supports raising the $8-per-hour minimum age to $9 at the end of this year, with automatic increases tied to inflation. Currently, the wage is set to go to $9 at the end of 2015. Silver said he also supports implementing a broad public financing law for statewide campaigns


Congressman Chris Gibson has authored “ The Vector-Borne Disease Research Transparency and Accountability Act of 2014” to update guidelines on treating tick borne illnesses, which will lead to insurance companies paying for treatments:

Gibson said that early indications are that the bill has support in both houses of congress & in the White House.   Gibson was in Sidney today to speak to the Sidney Rotary Club.


The State DEC has adopted a 10-year black bear management plan, which includes several proposed hunting rule changes, following thousands of public comments. DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said that the strategies outlined in the Plan seek to achieve and maintain bear population levels that are acceptable to the public while providing sustainable opportunity for New York’s big game hunters, and to also minimize human-bear conflicts. The Pathfinder Village Board of Directors announces plans to build a new $1.2 million community healthcare center in Edmeston.   Last month, the Pathfinder board approved building a 3,800 sq. ft. facility, named as the “DR. WILLIAM F. STRECK COMMUNITY HEALTH CLINIC” it will be located on State Route 80; it was named to recognize Dr. Streck's contributions   during his tenure with Bassett Healthcare and Pathfinder Village. The 7th Annual Dan Elwood Memorial 5k Run/1 Mile Walk to benefit Hospice will be held at the General Clinton Park, Bainbridge, NY at 9:00 AM on Saturday. Day of race registration is $22 and will take place from 7:30 - 8:30 AM at General Clinton Park next to the pavilion. The 5k run will pass by the Elwood family home on Dingman Hill where Dan grew up. 14 people were taken into custody in Broome County Wednesday on a variety of drug trafficking charges.  Arraignments began in US District court in Binghamton yesterday, Federal Prosecutors announced that all of those taken into custody were members of the Bloods Street Gang, & were known as "MacBallers."  Prosecutors accuse the arrested as being part of a large drug trafficking ring that operated out of New York City and into the Southern tier, distributing large quantities of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana since 2009.


A report of a missing Cooperstown woman had a favorable outcome this morning.  34-year-old Megan Hartmann of Cooperstown & Denver Colorado is a SUNY Oneonta graduate student, she was reported missing Monday, she has been found safe in Myrtle Beach South Carolina, according to the Cooperstown Police Department.   The Otsego County Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation


Lawmakers are continuing to work on the state budget, as the deadline approaches early next week.  Assemblyman Bill Magee is on the conference committee negotiating the Agricultural portion, which has some glaring omissions:

Magee continues to chair the assembly Agriculture committee, the state budget deadline in April 1st.


The Otsego County sheriff’s department arrested 24-year-old Kristen Rudnitsky of Oneonta for allegedly stealing & selling a vehicle last year.  The investigation alleges that Rudnitsky forged the owner’s name on DMV documents and sold the vehicle to a Binghamton resident.  Rudnitsky was already in the Otsego County Jail on drug charges, she was arraigned in town of Oneonta Court & was returned to the County Jail, faces action on the new charges in April.


Bassett Healthcare Network announced that Dr. Vance Brown or Portland Maine has been selected as President and Chief Executive Officer, starting July 1st.  Dr. Brown will replace Doctor William Streck, who is retiring this year after 30 years at Bassett.  Dr. Brown comes to Bassett from Maine Health in Portland, where he has been Chief Medical Officer since 2008.


State Police arrested 31-year-old Jason Barnhart of Bloomville on charges of DWI & reckless driving.  Barnhart is accused of driving while intoxicated on state route 10 through Delaware county, at speeds around 100 miles an hour, and for throwing a beer can out of his vehicle.  Barnhart will appear in Kortright town court on April 15th to answer the charges.


New York State is getting more than $28 million from the federal government to fund fish and wildlife conservation and recreation projects. That’s the state’s share of the nearly $1.1 billion in excise tax revenues, paid by sportsmen and sportswomen, that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will distribute to state fish and wildlife agencies nationwide. The Fish and Wildlife Service allocates the funds to all 50 states, through two programs funded by excise taxes, generated by the sale of sporting firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, fishing equipment and tackle, and fuel taxes on motorboats and small engines.


Girls on the Run of Central New York will host their 2nd Annual Guys Night Out at Brewery Ommegang on Saturday, April 5 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. This guys-only event is designed to create awareness of the program and to raise funds to support the nonprofit organization that provides a transformational learning program for girls in 3rd-8th grade to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.  More information is available at girlsontheruncny.org.
