State Police responded to a 2-vehicle crash on Interstate 88 in the town of Sidney Friday Afternoon. A tractor trailer and a pick-up truck were traveling west when they made contact, The pick-up truck continued off the roadway. The tractor trailer exited the roadway and turned on its side. The operator of the pick-up truck, a 77-year-old male sustained injuries and was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center and is in stable condition. The operator of the tractor trailer, a 56-year-old male was transported to A.O Fox Hospital. Interstate 88 west was shut down to assist with the removal of the tractor trailer, Motorists were detoured at exit 10. Troopers were assisted by the New York State Department of Transportation with the closure. The investigation is on-going.
Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Mathew O'Neill of Windsor with Driving While Intoxicated following a motor vehicle accident involving a boat and a tow truck in the Town of Colesville. On January 5, Responding deputies found a Ford Expedition smashed under a boat, with the rear of the boat pressed directly against the structure of a residence. The investigation revealed that O'Neill's vehicle left the road way and struck the parked boat, which collided with a residence and a tow truck parked nearby. No injuries were reported.

State Police & Emergency squads responded to tractor trailer accidents earlier today. 1 Tractor Trailer rolled over in the westbound lane of I-88 Near Exit 1 this morning, which closed down a portion of the highway. Also at about 6:50 this morning, State Police responded to I-81 south in the town of Virgil for a crash involving 2 tractor trailers that both jack-knifed, 1 driver was taken to an area hospital with back pain, the highway was closed for over 5 hours for clean up & removal of the vehicles. Snowy road conditions contributed to both accidents.

Deposit Fire Department released more details about a fire on December 14, on North Sanford Road in the town of Sanford. Deposit, Eastern Broome Emergency Services and the Harpursville Fire Department were dispatched after a resident reported a smoke on the 2nd floor. the fire was quickly knocked down, it was determined that the fire started in the chimney of a wood burning stove and spread into the walls of the structure. Everyone was able to escape the residence uninjured. a 2nd alarm was requested with additional response from Afton, Windsor, Masonville & West Windsor.

City of Oneonta Officials announced that Beginning next week (Monday–Wednesday), the contractor will install new street lighting in the area of the new roundabout at Main Street, Maple Street & The Lettis Highway. The following week, crews will complete electrical wiring and activate the lights. During this work, Main Street east from Grand Street and Lettis Highway south will be closed. There will also be short-term closures on Main Street west through the roundabout and Maple Street entering the roundabout. Posted detours will be in place, and all traffic will be restored once work is complete. Additional minor traffic disruptions are expected throughout January as rapid flashing beacons are installed at crosswalks and remaining signage is completed.

51 year old Timothy Hoose of Berkshire, was found guilty of Grand Larceny following a jury trial in Broome County Court. The conviction stems from criminal conduct between September 2023, and January 2024, in the Town of Windsor, where Hoose, doing business as H&H Contracting, entered into a construction contract with the victim to build a garage structure on the victim’s property, the victim paid a $15,000 down payment, Hoose illegally used over $3,000 of those funds for purposes unrelated to the project. Sentencing is scheduled for March 18, 2026, in Broome County Court, Hoose faces up to 7 years in State Prison.

A Windsor man is facing felony charges after attempting to break into a residence and being tracked down in the snow by Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies in the Town of Chenango. On Tuesday evening, Road Patrol responded to a burglar alarm on Russell Road, members noticed that the back door of the residence had been forced open, they eventually found footprints in the snow, they found 42 year old Scott Evanchof of Windsor wearing boots that matched the footprints, he admitted that he attempted to break into the residence & was charged with Burglary & Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned Following arraignment, Evanchof was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility, where he is currently in custody.

A 4 door sedan was making a left turn on a sharp curve onto Wing Hill Road when the driver did not see an SUV from the opposite direction, The vehicles collided and both caught fire, A passerby with a fire extinguisher assisted in getting a family out of the sedan and another person assisted the driver of the SUV out of their vehicle. 3 LifeNet helicopters responded to the area. 3 children & the driver of the sedan; Nicole Rinaldo of Ilion were transported to various hospitals, The driver of the SUV, 52 year old Michael Salon of Herkimer, was transported by helicopter to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management unit in partnership with the Department of Transportation held an Operation Hard Hat enforcement in Windsor along State Highway 17 east between exits 78 and 79. In just over four hours, 75 tickets were issued, 58 for Speeding, including 1 person was observed and ticketed for traveling 92 mph in the 55 mph active work zone.
2 people escaped a fire in Laurens Saturday afternoon, after a passerby reported the blaze to authorities, at 299 Crawford Road. Firefighters from Laurens & West Laurens responded, the 2 occupants were not injured, The fire is under investigation.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 37 year old Scott Hanrahan of Sanford for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of an Assault Weapon & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On Saturday Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol conducted a traffic stop on Route I-86 West in the Town of Windsor, deputies located cocaine, along with various assault weapons & multiple rounds of ammunition, Hanrahan had previous felony convictions & is facing new charges for illegal weapon and drug possession following the traffic stop. Hanrahan was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and remains in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The Harpursville Fire Department responded to a fire Saturday at 329 Hartz Road in the Town of Colesville. Harpursville Firefighters were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Windsor, West Windsor, Deposit, Masonville, Greene, Afton, Port Crane & several other departments responded, firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading, there was mostly smoke & water damage.

Arriving crews found a house and garage fully involved, which led to a brush fire. Investigators believe that the fire started long before it was reported, both the house & garage were destroyed. The fire is still under investigation. Broome County Sheriff's Fred Akshar held a press conference this afternoon into the deaths of 2 people at Village Manor Apartments on Gary Street in Windsor. Sheriff Akshar said that this was a murder & suicide, the deceased have been identified 53 year old Kent Johnson of Windsor and his former girlfriend, 47 year old Tess Savage of Binghamton. Investigators have determined that Savage went to Johnson's apartment, even though she had an order of protection against him, she died of strangulation, a few hours later, Johnson killed himself with a gun.

Firefighters from Laurens, Hartwick, Milford, West Oneonta, Morris & Oneonta have responded, The fire was called in an occupant, who reported that all other occupants escaped without injuries. Reese admitted that she had a previous DWI conviction within the prior 10 years, which resulted in these charges being felonies, she was sentenced to 2 separate terms of 5-year felony probation supervision, she was also sentenced to Adult Treatment Court, she must undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, and successfully comply with any treatment recommendations. Reese's license was revoked, and the Court imposed fines and surcharges in the amount of $4,140.00.

The fire started around 4 pm. and the house was deemed a total loss, the name of the victim has not been released pending family notification. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. State Police responded to a crash Monday involving a pedestrian in town of Sherburne. Police reported that a vehicle was traveling west on State Highway 80 when a pedestrian who was standing in the roadway and wearing dark clothing was struck. The pedestrian has been identified as 30 year old Megan Mikalunas of North Norwich, she was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the vehicle, 57 year old Robert Allen of Oneida stopped and flagged down another vehicle to call 911. Sherburne EMS and State Police responded to the scene, the investigation is on-going.

State Police responded Friday to State Route 17 west to a crash involving several vehicles. In the 1st crash, vehicles were stopped on State Route 17 due to a construction barrel in the road, a vehicle was unable to stop and struck the rear of a vehicle, causing 2 vehicles to spin, 1 of them hit the guide rail, the other vehicle, struck a different vehicle and pushed it into 1 of the original vehicles. 2 drivers were taken to Wilson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, 2 other drivers were injured, & were treated at the scene.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a 2-car accident on I-86 in the Town of Windsor. During the investigation, 39 year old Michael Morgan of Queens, failed a field sobriety test & was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. Morgan was processed and released on tickets returnable to the Town of Windsor Court.

Several Fire Departments responded to the report of a fire at the Town of Windsor barn Thursday afternoon. The investigation revealed that the fire started in the bay area of a garage, with fire damage to the entire garage itself with most of the damage occurring in the bay area. Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, West Colesville, 5 Mile Point, Deposit fire departments responded, no injuries were reported.
Late Wednesday Night into early Thursday Morning, State Troopers and members from the State DOT assisted with the closure of State Route 17 west between exits 67 and 66 to remove a large piece of machinery. Back on February 25th, a tractor trailer, which was not permitted properly, was pulling a large piece of machinery when it suffered a mechanical failure during transport. The weight of the machinery was too heavy to move and a crane from Rogers Industrial & Crane Specialists was brought in to move the load off the first trailer and onto another properly permitted trailer.

STATE POLICE reported that 57 year old James Jones of Louisiana was recovered from the Whitney Point Reservoir around 9:00 AM Tuesday, he was kayaking with another person when his kayak tipped over. His kayak was located but he did not resurface. The incident remains under investigation. Troopers were assisted by Broome County Sheriff’s, Chenango County Sheriff’s, Broome County Emergency Services, Broome County Technical Rescue Team, Whitney Point Fire, Harpursville Fire, West Windsor Fire, Chenango Bridge Fire, Vestal Fire, Killawog Fire, Lisle Fire, Greene Fire, Marathon Fire, Triangle Fire, Broome Ambulance, Greene Ambulance, Marathon Ambulance and Broome Security Division.

State Police and the State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to a tractor trailer rollover on State Route 17 in the Town of Windsor, at about 11:00 this morning. Police said that no other vehicle was involved. The driver was transported to a local hospital. One lane of 17 east bound and one lane of 17 west bound was closed near exit 81; the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The State Health Department reported today that over 285,000 new Yorkers were tested for COVID 19 Wednesday, & the positivity rate was down to 3.5%, the lowest since November 25th. Patients hospitalizations were down to 7,342, after hovering over 8,000 for weeks, the number of patients in an ICU bed went down to 1,402, after being at or above 1500 for many weeks and the number of patients on Ventilators was down to 941, after being over 1000 for many weeks, there were 122 deaths from COVID on Wednesday.

Seidel attempted evasive action but was struck head-on by Parker's vehicle, she went into a guardrail, Parker's vehicle rolled over & he was ejected. A third vehicle was struck by debris, the driver was not injured. Parker died at Wilson Hospital, Seidel's passengers escaped the vehicle, she was extricated & later died at Wilson Hospital, 2 of the children suffered bleeding to the head & face.
