U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer met with Sidney Officials Saturday at the civic center, to discuss the Sidney flood plain project:

The plans to buy out & relocate resident from the flood prone River Street area over to the Plankenhorn road are continuing, the town & village board are working to annex that area into the village limits, the cost of the project is about 22 million dollars.

The Sidney American legion will host their annual children’s Christmas party again tomorrow, legion spokesman Larry Halbert explains:

Operation Merry Christmas will hold their giveaway to families that have signed up this year, tomorrow in Sidney. Program coordinator Ginny Ireland explains:

The giveaway is being held Saturday on the 2nd floor of the Sidney Civic Center.

A benefit will be held Sunday in Sidney for Brenda O'Connell, who has been battling cancer for many years. The benefit will be held at the Sidney American Legion Sunday from 12:30pm to 6:00 PM, Brenda has been out of work due to her health, and is faced with large medical bills, the benefit will feature food, beverages and live entertainment with Tumbleweed Highway, Woodshed Prophets, Fetish Lane, Kenyon Hill, $ 15 Donations are encouraged at the door.

Operation Merry Christmas is underway and will be coming to a close later this week at 19 locations. Program coordinator Ginny Ireland explains how the program works:

Ireland said that the deadline to get a present is December 5th; the giveaway will be on December 12th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Sidney Civic Center for those who signed up, more information is available at 563-8119 or 967-8119.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is offering a one-day online-only deal on three-year park passes. The special price will be available today only for Cyber Monday. The joint meeting of the Village & Town of Sidney boards scheduled for Monday has been cancelled. The 2 boards were scheduled to meet Monday at 6:00 PM at the Sidney Civic Center; the Sidney Village board will still hold their meeting at 7:00 PM.

The Village of Sidney will hold another public meeting on flood mitigation efforts tonight. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in room 202 of the Sidney civic center.

The Sidney Village Board of Trustees will be holding an emergency board meeting with limited agenda items in the Sidney Civic Center boardroom. The meeting gets underway at 7:00 PM. The board will acknowledge receipt of bids not meeting FAA specifications & Authorize rebidding of the acquisition of Snow Removal Utility Tractor with attachments.

The Sidney town board has scheduled a special meeting for today. The meeting   will begin at 6:00 PM in the Civic Center Board room; the board will discuss the Sidney center stream relocation project.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Department & Sidney Village Police arrested 27-year-old Michael Nodine of Sidney on an Arrest Warrant for Attempted Assault.   Nodine is accused of assaulting and attempting to cause physical injury to another inmate at the Delaware County Jail last week. Nodine was being held in the Jail on $5000 bail on a pending rape charge, posted bail on April 17th and was released from jail. The assaulted inmate, also from Sidney, sustained minor injuries, which did not require medical treatment. Nodine was arraigned on the Attempted Assault charge and was sent back to the Delaware County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.

The Town of Sidney Planning Board meeting is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at the Civic Center on Liberty Street in Sidney. The public is welcome.

10 hazard mitigation projects are scheduled for federal funds for projects to get people out of traditionally flood prone areas.  1 of the projects is the Sidney Green Plain Project, Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak explains:

Matviak said that 22 million dollars in federal funds would be used for the Plankenhorn farm project for River Street area residents, another 5 to 6 millions dollars will be used to purchase 73 damaged properties in that section of the village.

The Sidney Boys & Girls club is putting together fundraisers in conjunction with this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life event next month.  Club Director Trish Tyrell said that the next fundraiser is tomorrow:

Tyrell said that the club would be participating at the Relay Fro Life event at general Clinton Park, along with members of the new Senior Center at the Sidney Civic Center.

Governor Cuomo is reminding New Yorkers that nearly 88,000 jobs are currently available and listed at jobs.ny.gov. The site sorts jobs by region and occupation, & allows users to search jobs based on zip code & distance. There are 96 career centers around the state, which can be found at labor.ny.gov/career-center-locator.  Employers can list jobs at labor.ny.gov/hire.  Currently, there are 3,946 jobs listed in the Southern Tier region.

Sidney residents with homes in the 100 year flood plain should be aware of the state recovery housing programs, which can lead to buyouts of homes no matter the level of damage sustained.  The programs can pay for repairs, rehabilitation or elevation; residents must apply by April 11th.  State representatives will be available Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the village office at the Sidney Civic Center; information is also available at stormrecovery.ny.gov.

A public meeting on the progress of the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program in Sidney will be held tonight from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Sidney Civic Center.  Officials encourage those in the floodplain to attend, to get an update on the progress being made to protect property owners and the village as a whole.

Free tax counseling will be available for some Delaware County residents through the Free Tax Counseling for the Elderly program.  Senior citizens and low- and moderate-income residents can receive free tax preparation assistance for basic returns. Counseling will be available February 19th, March 12th and April 9th at the Sidney Civic Center.  For more information call 563-2212

The new Senior Center opened today on the 2nd floor of the Sidney Civic Center, which will be tied into the recreational facilities at the Sidney Boys & Girls Club.  Club Director Trish Tyrell said that many area organizations and businesses have supported this project:

Governor Cuomo will deliver the 2014-15 executive Budget Address this afternoon in Albany.  The presentation will begin at 2:00 PM at the Hart Theatre at the Egg Center for Performing Arts in Albany, before a joint session of the legislature.

The Sidney community blood drive will be held tomorrow at St. Luke’s church 129 west main street in Sidney.  The drive runs from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, appointments can be made at 1-800-red cross or at redcrossblood.org.
