Erie County Officials announced this morning that the death toll form the Christmas weekend snowstorm in the Buffalo region, has killed 36 people so far. 400 National Guard members have been sent to Buffalo to assist in the rescue & clean up, after 4 feet of snow fell, several miles of the New York State Thruway were closed in Western New York.
More than 1,900 New Yorkers are set to receive benefits as part of the final round of payments from the state’s historic Excluded Workers Fund. Nearly $30 million will be sent before the end of the year. In total, more than 130,000 EWF applications have been approved and, minus administrative costs, the entirety of the $2.1 billion fund will soon be distributed to eligible New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that will protect consumers from scammers by requiring businesses give notice of potential scams when selling gift cards. The new Legislation amends the general business law to require that retailers selling gift cards also post a notice cautioning customers of gift card scams and providing information on what to do if they believe they may be a victim of such a scam.
Attorney General Letitia James cautioned consumers and businesses of price gouging of children's painkillers and fever reducers as demand increases for those medications due to this year's "tripledemic" of COVID-19, RSV, and the flu. The Attorney General is aware of reports of children's medication being sold online and in stores at prices two or three times their retail value. New Yorkers should report potential concerns about price gouging to the Attorney General's Office by filing a complaint online or calling 1-800-771-7755.
A new law requires telemarketers to give customers the option to be added to their do-not-call list immediately after the telemarketer says their name and company. The new law passed in the Legislature this year and was signed by Governor Hochul, it goes into effect on March 6th of 2023.

Unadilla Fire Department responded Monday Night at about 10:45 PM to a reported structure fire in the area of Buckhorn Lake Road and State Highway 7. Responding Firefighters discovered a working fire on the 2nd floor rear of the residence. Unadilla crews along with Wells Bridge crews were able to gain entry and knock the fire down. No injuries were reported, other Fire Departments assisting included Franklin, Sidney Sidney Center & Otego, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
State Police arrested 24 year old Robert Henness of Otego Monday for Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. An investigation revealed that on multiple occasions, Henness inappropriately touched a child who is less than 13-years-old. Henness was processed at SP Oneonta and then transported to the Otsego County Jail for Centralized Arraignment and Processing. He was remanded to the Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
The State Health Department reports a steady increase has been continuing in COVID 19 cases, along with many cases of various flu strains. From the period of Saturday through Monday, there were over 48,000 New Yorkers tested for COVID with 4438 positive tests, for an 8% positivety rate. Patient Hospitalization have increased to just under 3800, there were 363 ICU Patients & 153 on Ventilators, there were 94 deaths reported in Hospitals & Nursing homes. The State Health Department urges New Yorkers to get vaccinated & boosted for COVID 19 & to find out about flu vaccine clinics, contact your local health department or visit vaccines.gov/find-vaccines/.
The State Department of Labor announced that the state unemployment rate remained at 4.3% in November. Locally, Chenango & Otsego Counties had 2.7% Unemployment, Delaware County was at 2.9% in November.
The Chenango Arts Council's 2022 Member's Show and Opening Reception was postponed last week due to inclement weather, the event has been moved to tonight starting at 5:30 PM at 27 West Main Street in Norwich.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies received a 911 call reporting a one car motor vehicle accident last Thursday in the Town of Delhi. 45 year old William Smith of Bloomville was found to be operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated condition, and had been involved in a property damage motor vehicle accident. Smith was charged with Driving While Intoxicated & moving from lane unsafely. He was then released on an appearance ticket for Town of Delhi Court at a later date.
The Inauguration of Governor Kathy Hochul will be held on Sunday, January 1st, at 2:00 PM at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The Governor will be sworn in and will then deliver her inaugural address.

After the town of Davenport discovered a leak in their water system over the weekend, forcing the closing of the Charlotte Valley School District Monday, the district announced that school will be back in session today.

Tomorrow is Election day, New Yorkers Statewide will be voting candidates to send to Washington, in the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Charles Schumer, he faces competition from Republican Joe Pinion & 3rd party candidate Diane Sare. Locally, voters in the 19th Congressional District will be choosing between a Republican Mark Molinaro of Duchess County, and Democrat Josh Riley of Tompkins county. 43 year old Ray Hyer of Unadilla was arrested in Ohio after he failed to appear in n Otsego County court earlier this year for sentencing on a criminal sexual act charge. Hyer was located in Sandusky, Ohio on October 21st, he was arrested and was extradited back to the Otsego County Jail, he faces additional charges on top of the original criminal sexual act conviction.
Broome County officials are investigating the death of an inmate in the Broome County Jail on Friday. 30 year-old Mitchell Lindow of Binghamton was being held on a murder charge when he was found deceased by Corrections officers conducting a head count, an autopsy was conducted Friday, no cause of death was determined.

State Police announced that 9 people were arrested & drugs were seized after search warrants were executed at Budget Inn Motel on Route 23 Southside in the town of Oneonta Thursday & Friday. Items seized included methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, crack cocaine, ecstasy, Suboxone strips & Packaging materials and scales, The investigation is on-going.
State Police issued 11,601 tickets and arrested 189 people for impaired driving during the special traffic enforcement detail over Halloween weekend. The initiative targeted speeding and impaired drivers, began on Friday, October 28, and continued through Tuesday, November 1.
the Internal Revenue Service reports that some New Yorkers may be getting a 2nd stimulus check from the IRS. More than 9 million people may qualify to receive stimulus payments and tax credits, these are people who did not file a tax return because their income was too low. the deadline to file for the additional stimulus money is November 17th.
The Houston Astros won the 2022 World Series, artifacts from the team are coming to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Among the items donated, the Bat used by Yordan Álvarez in Game 6 when he hit a go-ahead 3-run home run, a Jersey worn in Game 2 and wristbands worn in Game 6 by Astros manager Dusty Baker, a Ball thrown by Cristian Javier in Game 4 and signed by all 4 pitchers who combined on just the second World Series no-hitter.

The Hartwick College Women's Field Hockey Team has been conducting fundraising efforts for the Trinity O'Connor Foundation, named after 6 year old Trinity O'Connor of Sidney who died earlier this year after a battle with cancer. Foundation Spokesperson Kim Ayres told WCDO News that their efforts will culminate with their game today:

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 33 year old Kevin Cochrane was sentenced to 3 years in prison followed by 6 years of post-release supervision, for attempted use of a child less than 17 years of age in a sexual performance. Cochrane was taken to the Broome County Jail after sentencing in Broome County Court, he will be transferred over to a state correctional facility.
The New York State Department of Health proposed regulations for 23 additional emerging contaminants in drinking water in the State Register today, which then starts a 60-day public review and comment period. The proposed regulations would set new drinking water standards, or maximum contaminant levels, for 4 additional hazardous chemicals, requiring public water systems to reduce levels under the requirements. The proposed rules would also require testing, reporting, and public notification for 19 additional PFAS compounds. The proposed regulations appear at dos.ny.gov/state-register, the public will until December 5th to review and comment

In the month of September, members State Police from Troop "C" removed 53 impaired drivers off the roadways. 2 of those impaired drivers also had a child under the age of 15 in the vehicle with them, 15 of those drivers were more than double the legal limit, 12 of those drivers were under the influence of drugs, 3 of those drivers were previously convicted of DWI within the last 10 years
Chobani has increased pay for their workers in South Edmeston. The company says wages are increasing anywhere between 20% and 30% for their hourly manufacturing employees, that means starting salary will now be $18.50 per hour. The average salary at the business is $23.50.
Delaware County Public Health Services will be conducting a Monkeypox vaccine clinic Today, from 4:30PM to 6:00 PM, at 99 Main Street in Delhi. The two vaccine doses are given 28 days apart. State Police arrested 27 year old Gerard Bourgeois of Otego for 2nd degree Burglary & 3rd degree Arson, Police responded on Monday just before 8:00 PM to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Pleasant Valley Road in the town of Hartwick, troopers heard smoke alarms & observed smoke coming from a residence on Bunn Hill Road. The troopers notified area Firefighters & entered the home, they found an active fire at a gas stove, they could not turn off the stove due to the damage to the controls, & instead turned the propane tanks outside. Troopers responded to another report of a suspicious person near the Hartwick Restaurant on State Highway 205, when they located Bourgeois. Bourgeois was arraigned at Otsego County Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond pending court action on October 12th.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 42 year old Katherina Cassata of Gilbertsville for 9 counts of Animal Cruelty after a search warrant was executed on September 16th, regarding an ongoing animal cruelty investigation. Cassata was charged with 9 counts of Overdriving, Abuse of Animals & Failure to Provide Sustenance, the investigation revealed that there were deceased animals were on the property and the remaining animals were malnourished. The animals were removed to the Susquehanna SPCA, the seizure included 19 horses, 2 pigs, a llama, a donkey, and a cat, plus a deceased alpaca was found on the property. Cassata was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Butternuts Court at a later date.

Currently, health departments are monitoring wastewater to find the polio virus, they encourage New Yorkers to get vaccinated as soon as possible. State Police arrested 22 year old Corey Sawyer of Norwich for allegedly stabbing 2 people in Chenango County. Sawyer was charged with 2 counts each of Attempted Murder & 2nd degree Assault and 4 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Troopers responded Wednesday to a residence on State Route 80 in the town of Otselic just before 1:30 AM, Sawyer is accused of stabbing 2 people with a knife during a domestic dispute, The victims were both taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital then later transported to Wilson Medical Center, with non-life-threatening injuries. 3 children under the age of 17 were at the residence when the incident occurred. Sawyer was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital due to injuries he sustained prior to Trooper’s arrival. He was treated and released, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $250-thousand cash bail, $500-thousand bond or $1-million partially secured bond. His next court date was set for October 4th.

On Thursday, September 22nd, members of the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the Correctional Facility, the Investigation revealed that 31-year-old Daquan Dowdell and 45-year-old Rashawn Wynn, both of Syracuse punched another Inmate in the face, which caused the serious physical injury. Wynn and Dowdell each with one count of 2nd degree Assault, they were arraigned and were remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending other charges.

State Police responded Monday to a report of a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 7 in the town of Otego. 45 year old Jennifer Thayer of Otego was driving on County Highway 7 when she exited the roadway and struck a tree. Thayer was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
The State DOT is advising motorists that the ramp from I-88 westbound to I-81 northbound in the Town of Chenango, will be closed today from 9:00 to 12:00 Noon for overhead sign inspection. A detour will direct traffic to I-81 Southbound for entry to I-81 Northbound at Exit 5.

The Governor's Office announced that $20 million is available to support addiction services providers in New York State that have been impacted by the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal funding will assist providers with fiscal recovery and enable them to continue offering COVID-safe substance use disorder prevention, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services. The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local unemployment rates for July. The State's unemployment rate held at 4.4% from June to July, locally, Chenango County had 3.3% unemployment, Delaware County 3.9% & Otsego County 3.5% in July.
The Sidney Veteran's Memorial Park Association had a successful fundraising Golf Tournament this year, and more fundraisers may be announced, as upgrades are being performed at the Park in Sidney at River Street near State Route 8. The State Health Department confirmed the 1st case of Monkeypox in a Juvenile. Officials said that the child lives outside of New York City, however, 25% of all monkeypox cases in the U.S. are in New York City. There were 2,596 cases reported statewide as of last Friday.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office reported that a Walton man died Sunday while canoeing on the Susquehanna River in Otego. Emergency Services received a 911 call at 1:59 pm. from a group of family members canoeing on the river, reporting that a member of their party was missing. 43 year old Brian Walley fell into the water, family was unable to locate him, he was found by State Police divers at 6:45 pm. and was declared deceased by the Otsego County Coroner's office.
From August 15 - August 21 Troopers were out targeting risky and unsafe driving behavior like speeding, distracted driving and violations of the "Move Over Law". The special campaign titled "Speed Week" resulted in over 25-thousand tickets issued across the state. In Troop C, 1,491 speeding violations were issued and 108 "Move Over" tickets were issued.

State Police & EMS responded to a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 42 in the town of Maryland. Troopers found that vehicle had crashed into a tree, the driver was a 17-year-old female who was pronounced deceased on scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that the operator was traveling south on County Highway 42 when she exited the roadway and struck a tree. The investigation is ongoing.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 11.9% in July compared to the same month in 2021, according to an analysis by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Local collections totaled $1.8 billion, up $188 million as compared to July of last year. A majority of counties saw some year-over-year growth in July collections, with Schuyler County experiencing the largest increase at 19.6%.

The United States Geological Survey says the small magnitude 1.2 tremor happened just east of Batavia, in Genesee County last Monday Afternoon. Officials said that a quake measuring 1.0 on the Richter Scale has the equivalent energy of a 60 watt light bulb left on for 9 hours straight. No damage was reported during the quake. 551 earthquakes have been recorded in New York state from the years 1737-2016, the largest ever registered was a 5.9 earthquake near Massena in 1944.

State Police have identified that human remains found in Morris recently as 38 year old Laura Rous of Otego. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death is continuing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the New York State Police at 607-561-7400.
State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Computer Crimes Unit arrested 28 year old Davaun Chandler of Earlville for Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. The arrest stems from a cyber tip received by the State Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Chandler was arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5000 cash, $10,000 bond.
43 year old Jillian Eckberg of Oneonta was sentenced to more than 5 years in prison trafficking methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl. Eckberg admitted that she brought narcotics from New York City to customers in Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, Eckberg will also be under supervised release for four years following her prison term.

The Trial of Jason Johnson of the town of Colesville continues in Broome County Court. Johnson is accused of shooting State Trooper Becky Seager in June of 2021, Jason's father, David Johnson is accused of tampering with evidence on behalf of his son. Police had been called to the East Windsor Road locations for the report of shots fired, Johnson was apprehended following a 19 hour manhunt, Trooper Seager was hospitalized after being shot in the hip.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Kyle Davis of Mohawk for Burglary, Grand Larceny, Crinminal Mischief & endangering the welfare of a child, following an investigation in to a theft at a storage unit facility in the Town of Otego. Davis allegedly burglarized a storage unit while in the presence of a small child, Investigators responded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility, and took him in to custody, he was processed at the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, was issued and Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Otego Court and was returned back to the custody of the Herkimer County Correctional Facility.
