The Winter storm is ready to leave a significant amount of snowfall on the region today through early Saturday Morning, Local Meteorologist Rich Townsend told WCDO News what to expect:

The Governor's Office announced that the State DOT will be sending extra snowplows to the affected areas of this storm, WCDO will have the CDO Stormwatch this afternoon & again tomorrow with a list of school closings and postponements.

State Police responded to the report of “shots fired” in the town of Andes, the investigation revealed that a 62-year-old female was injured when she accidentally discharged a semi-automatic rifle, suffering face and hand injuries. The responding trooper applied a tourniquet to subside the heavy bleeding to the victim’s hand, another officer from the Colchester Police Department applied a 2nd tourniquet until EMS arrived and the victim was transported to Bassett Hospital for treatment. Troopers reported that the rifle is not legal in New York State and was not New York Safe Act compliant, 58 year old Richard Geraghty of Andes, was charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced he will be running for re-election in 2023. 4 years ago, Korchak lost the Republican primary, but won the election on the Libertarian ticket.

Unadilla Valley Central School District voters approved a $17.8 million capital project by a vote of 114 to 18. The renovations and improvements will be funded through state aid and an allocation from the district’s reserve funds. The project is expected to be budget neutral, with no anticipated impact on the tax levy.

Area United Way programs are seeing only about 60% of their stated goals for the 2022 year, with donations being accepted through December 31st, Elizabeth Monaco currently heads up the United Way in Chenango, Madison, Delaware & Otsego Counties:

NBT Bancorp and Salisbury Bancorp, Inc. of Connecticut announced that they have entered into a agreement where Salisbury will merge with and into NBT. Chief Accounting Officer Annette Burns of NBT Bancorp told WCDO News what the merger means:

The merger is expected to close in the second quarter of 2023 following the expected approval by the shareholders and required regulatory approvals.

Leadership Otsego announced they are accepting applications for their program to establish future leaders in the County. The 6 month program meets 1 day a month, Classes will primarily be held in Oneonta, applications will be accepted through January 13th, more information is available at 607-432-4500 extension 2.

The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that former Broome County DA Stephen Cornwell pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court to Grand Larceny, he was sentenced to 3 year conditional discharge, was ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and will have to give up his license to practice law. Former Administrative assistant to Cornwell, James Worhach pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of Stolen property for illegally possessing criminal case files belonging to the office of the Broome County District Attorney's Office, he was sentenced to 1 year conditional discharge, he is still facing additional charges.

The Chenango County Health Department announced that a flu shot clinic will be held Friday November 18th at the Chenango County Office Building in Norwich. The Flu Clinic is free for those 10 years of age & older who have no or limited coverage insurance, per-registration is requested at 337-1660.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department and the Otsego County Conservation Association are teaming up once again to promote the Otsego County Schools Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. The challenge promotes recycling of film plastics and is open to all public and private k-12 school buildings located in Otsego County. The challenge kicks off on America Recycles Day, November 15, and runs through April 14, 2023.

State Police announced that the body of Frederick Mayock of Springfield Massachusetts was found in Canadarago Lake in Otsego County yesterday. Mayock was reported missing after he went kayaking October 22nd.

Delaware County Sheriff's office arrested 41 year old Billie Jo Browning of Unadilla, after Deputies responded on October 28th, to a 2-car property damage motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies arrested Browning for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, she will appear in the Town of Meredith court at a later date.

The Chenango County Historical Society announced that they are celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Raymond Corporation, at their annual Membership dinner at 5:00 PM tonight at Raymond in Greene. The event combines the annual Society membership meeting with an exclusive viewing of The Raymond Corporation’s recently unveiled centennial exhibit.

Tomorrow is Election day, New Yorkers Statewide will be voting candidates to send to Washington, in the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Charles Schumer, he faces competition from Republican Joe Pinion & 3rd party candidate Diane Sare. Locally, voters in the 19th Congressional District will be choosing between a Republican Mark Molinaro of Duchess County, and Democrat Josh Riley of Tompkins county. The winner replaces Richard Northrup, who has decided to retire after many years of service on the bench & in the District Attorney's office.

Local Area Voters will be deciding on who they should send to Albany in the State Senate & State Assembly. In 51st State Senate District, Incumbent Peter Oberacker faces Democratic Challenger Eric Ball. In State Assembly District 121, incumbent Republican Joe Angelino is unopposed. The new 101st District covers Otego, Laurens, Morris, & Franklin locally, the candidates are Democrat Matthew Mackey & Republican Brian Maher, in the new 122nd District, covering Oneonta, Milford, Hartwick, Burlington, & New Lisbon locally, Democrat Dan Butterman, Republican Brian Miller & Working Families Party candidate Colton Mennig are running for the seat.

43 year old Ray Hyer of Unadilla was arrested in Ohio after he failed to appear in n Otsego County court earlier this year for sentencing on a criminal sexual act charge. Hyer was located in Sandusky, Ohio on October 21st, he was arrested and was extradited back to the Otsego County Jail, he faces additional charges on top of the original criminal sexual act conviction.

Broome County officials are investigating the death of an inmate in the Broome County Jail on Friday. 30 year-old Mitchell Lindow of Binghamton was being held on a murder charge when he was found deceased by Corrections officers conducting a head count, an autopsy was conducted Friday, no cause of death was determined.

State Police announced that 9 people were arrested & drugs were seized after search warrants were executed at Budget Inn Motel on Route 23 Southside in the town of Oneonta Thursday & Friday. Items seized included methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, crack cocaine, ecstasy, Suboxone strips & Packaging materials and scales, The investigation is on-going.

The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that 32-year-old Stephen Moran of Binghamton was arraigned in Broome County Court Thursday, he was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, 2nd degree manslaughter, along with several other charges, he is accused of driving intoxicated at an excessive speed August 8th on the Vestal Parkway, his vehicle crashed into a vehicle occupied by Alfred and Paula Latessa, Alfred was pronounced dead at the scene, Paula succumbed to her injuries at an area hospital shortly after the crash.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that a man missing from Delaware County was discovered illegally harvesting ginseng in the town of Middletown. The unidentified man was reported missing on August 31st after he failed to return home; an acquaintance found the man’s vehicle on a private logging road in the town of Middletown. The Sheriff’s Office K9 team located the missing person in good health, An Environmental Conservation Office seized the ginseng he was charged with harvesting ginseng without landowner permission, trespassing, and petty larceny.

2 Otsego County Blood drives are scheduled, the 1st will be in Oneonta today from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM at the Elm Park Methodist Church, 401 Chestnut Street. The State Labor Department released their local unemployment rates for September. Locally, Chenango County reported 2.7%, Delaware County, 3.1%, Otsego County 2.8% & Broome County 3.3%. The State wide Unemployment rate was 4.3% in September.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced applications are now being accepted from small businesses that have successfully completed the pre-screening process to become certified for the COVID-19 Capital Costs Tax Credit Program. The refundable tax relief program targets COVID-19-related expenses such as disinfectants, HVAC equipment, Expenses related to increased outdoor activity and outdoor space expansions & Machinery and equipment to facilitate contactless sales. Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a reported harassment complaint in the Village of Walton. The caller was 45 year old Jason Culligan of Texas, it was discovered by Deputies that Culligan had an active arrest warrant out of Harris County Texas for Aggravated Assault. Deputies took Culligan into custody, he was arraigned in the Village of Walton Court and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending future court action & extradition.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 42 year old Kory Minshall of Burlington Flats in Morris October 1st. Minshall was pulled over and was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for Methamphetamines, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Operating a Motor Vehicle without Insurance, along with several other similar charges, he was also wanted on an active warrant out of Otsego County Family Court and had a suspended driver’s license. Minshall is being held in the Otsego County Jail on the Family Court warrant. He will appear in the Town of Morris Court on a later date.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 year old Dylan Rulison of Johnstown, following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident with a stolen vehicle in Montgomery County. Rulison was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office on several charges, the vehicle had been stolen from the Town of Worcester, he was charged in Otsego County with Grand Larceny and Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle, he was released & will appear in the Town of Worcester Court on October 11th.

2 teenager were shot outside of the home of Congressman and Republican candidate for governor Lee Zeldin, in Shirley in Suffolk County Sunday afternoon. The 2 teenage boys were taken to area hospitals, they had been walking with a third teenager when they were hit by gunfire from a moving car. The wounded teens hid under his porch and into the bushes, while the 3rd person fled the scene. Zeldin & his wife were in the Bronx campaigning at the time of the shooting, their teenage daughters locked themselves inside & called police

The Otsego County District Attorney’s office is investigating the death of an infant in Laurens last Tuesday. An autopsy will be conducted, the investigation is continuing.

The State DEC issued an update on drought conditions across the state. The State’s Drought Management Task Force updated the drought status to “Normal” from “Drought Watch” for multiple regions including most of upstate New York because of recent rainfall and higher levels of ground and surface water. The following counties will return to Normal designations: Broome, Chenango, Delaware & Otsego Counties locally.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 33 year old Kevin Cochrane was sentenced to 3 years in prison followed by 6 years of post-release supervision, for attempted use of a child less than 17 years of age in a sexual performance. Cochrane was taken to the Broome County Jail after sentencing in Broome County Court, he will be transferred over to a state correctional facility.

The Otsego County Health Department will hold a rabies vaccination clinic for Dogs, Cats & Ferrets tonight in Otego. The clinic will run from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Otego Fire Department, more information is available at 547-4230.

On Tuesday, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a serious personal injury 2 car Accident on Covered Bridge Road in the Town of Sidney. Deputies discovered that 1 of the vehicles in the crash was sheered into 2 separate pieces. Deputies also discovered that the occupants of both vehicles had been wearing their seat-belts, and that no occupant had been ejected from either vehicle. 4 patients were transported from the scene, one patient was later transferred to Upstate Medical Center for a higher level of care. The State Department of Labor announced their Southern Tier Region Virtual Career Fair, being held on Thursday, October 20th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, for job seekers in the Southern Tier Counties of Chenango, Delaware, Otsego & Broome counties. Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 27 year old Dustin Roberts of Stamford for Aggravated Unlicensed Operator & leaving the scene of an accident. On September 21st, Deputies were dispatched to a hit & run accident in Stamford. During the course of the investigation it was learned that Roberts was the driver of the vehicle that left the scene, he also had a suspended driver’s license. Roberts is scheduled to appear before the Town of Stamford Court at a later date.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 24 year old Derek McNeil of Binghamton was sentenced to 5 years in jail followed by 5 years post release supervision, following guilty pleas to 2nd degree assault & criminal mischief, for choking an 18 year old female in Binghamton in March, and breaking a window in May, causing $250 damage.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Jason Gray of Bainbridge after violating a court protection ordered. Gray was charged with Criminal Contempt, following an investigation into a violation of an Order of Protection by contacting the protected party through electronic means, the defendant is scheduled to appear in the Town of Unadilla Court at a later date.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than 100 New York communities are now certified as Climate Smart Communities. Locally, the Town of New Lisbon in Otsego County was 1 of the 11 new municipalities, plus the town of Roseboom was 1 of 4 local governments that were re-certified by completing additional actions, more information is available at climatesmart.ny.gov.

Broome County District Attorney office announced that Vernon Riddick pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon, for having an unlicensed and loaded .40 handgun on July 24th while driving erratically in Binghamton. Police said that Riddick fled in his car, he abandoned the car and ran on foot, Police confiscated that weapon from a trash can nearby. Riddick faces sentencing in December in Broome County Court.

The Otsego Department of Health and the Sheriff's Office announced that certified Child Safety Seat Technicians are available today to check if the child seats are properly installed. The event will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 Pm today at the Home Depot on State highway 28 in Oneonta.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputies and employees of the Susquehanna SPCA seized an assortment of malnourished animals from Village Farms in Gilbertsville on Friday, 17 horses, 2 pigs, a llama, a donkey and a cat were taken from the farm, The investigation is ongoing.

State Police arrested 56 year old Francesco Carotenuto of Schenevus for Promoting Sexual Performance by a Child and Possessing Sexual Performance by a Child. An investigation revealed that Carotenuto was in possession of and promoting images consistent with child sexual exploitation via the internet. While at Carotenuto’s residence, Troopers observed seven adult dogs who did not have adequate food, water or shelter. The dogs were turned over to the care of the Otsego County SPCA. He was additionally charged with New York Agriculture and Market Law of Overdriving, Torturing, and Injuring Animals, a misdemeanor. Carotenuto was arraigned at Otsego County Central Arraignment and Processing and remanded to the jail on $20,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled at the Maryland Town Court on September 13, 2022.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 58 year old Loretta Washington of Binghamton was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison followed by 2 1/2 years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to attempted arson. Washington set fire to a doormat that was outside of an apartment last October in Binghamton, the fire was quickly extinguished and that there were no injuries.

State Police arrested 35 year old Tadd Sherwood of Oneonta for 2nd degree attempted murder after he allegedly fired a shotgun in a residential area Saturday in the town of Unadilla, that could have caused the death of another person. Sherwood was arraigned and was remanded to the Otsego County Jail without bail pending future court action.

The Sidney Central School District voters approved of the $8 Million Dollar capital project Tuesday. The project passed 158-77, more information is available in the district website.

Nicholas & Terry DeCutler were arraigned in Otsego County Court Monday on 2nd degree Murder charges. The Brothers are accused of fatally stabbing 24 year old Kaleb O'Neill in an alleyway at Dietz Street in Oneonta on Memorial Day. The DeCutler's were being held on Bail in the Otsego County Jail pending a court appearance on September 19th.

Delaware County Sheriff's deputies arrested Melanie Moore of New Jersey for failing to stop at a stop sign on Townsend Street in Walton. Moore's driving privileges had been suspended, she was charged with Failing to Stop at a Stop Sign and Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, she faces court action at a later date.

Norwich Middle School Principal Michelle Osterhoudt, has accepted the position of Superintendent of the Margaretville School District. Osterhoudt, of Oneonta will take over as the Margaretville Superintendent for the start of the new school year, she had served in the Norwich district for several years, she also served on the Oneonta Common Council and served various capacities for the Oneonta NAACP.

The State DEC has expanded its Drought Watch to about 2/3rds of the state's land, as dry weather conditions continue. The watch now includes all of the counties south of the Mohawk River Valley, & excludes those in the Adirondacks, Eastern Great Lakes, Westchester County & New York City. DEC Officials are encouraging residents in affected counties, particularly those dependent on private groundwater wells, to conserve water whenever possible during the coming weeks. No mandatory restrictions are in place under a state drought watch.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 35-year-old Jason Johnson of Nineveh has been found guilty of attempted murder & several other charges for the shooting of State Trooper Becky Seager on June 9th , 2021. Troopers responded to East Windsor Road for a welfare check, Trooper Becky Seager was shot in the hip, which was followed by a 19-hour manhunt, Johnson was found the next day at State Route 79 near the Susquehanna River in the town of Colesville.

Delaware County Sheriff's office have arrested 47 year old James Amato of Colchester, back on July 12th, Deputies responded to a trespass in progress, where Amato is accused of entering a gated property after being told he was not allowed there. On August 10th, Deputies arrested Amato for Criminal Mischief & Criminal Trespass, he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Andes Court on a later date.

The Chenango County Fair will return to the fairgrounds tomorrow through Sunday for its 175th anniversary, Chenango County Fair Spokesperson Mary Weidman explains:

The annual event will begin with a ribbon cutting to open the grounds at 1:00 PM Wednesday and celebrate the 175th Anniversary.

The Trial of Jason Johnson of the town of Colesville continues in Broome County Court. Johnson is accused of shooting State Trooper Becky Seager in June of 2021, Jason's father, David Johnson is accused of tampering with evidence on behalf of his son. Police had been called to the East Windsor Road locations for the report of shots fired, Johnson was apprehended following a 19 hour manhunt, Trooper Seager was hospitalized after being shot in the hip.

Law enforcement agencies in Otsego County & the District Attorney's Office are investigating the discovery of a deceased woman in the town of Morris. The woman was found by 2 people who were using a metal detector in a remote area, the identity of the woman & the cause of death has not been determined, she is believed to have been dead for about 2 months.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Kyle Davis of Mohawk for Burglary, Grand Larceny, Crinminal Mischief & endangering the welfare of a child, following an investigation in to a theft at a storage unit facility in the Town of Otego. Davis allegedly burglarized a storage unit while in the presence of a small child, Investigators responded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility, and took him in to custody, he was processed at the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, was issued and Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Otego Court and was returned back to the custody of the Herkimer County Correctional Facility.

Village of Sidney Police Department responded Thursday night at about 9:50 PM, to a security alarm activation at Smoker's Choice at 6 Doran Lane, where a burglary was in progress, a suspect has been identified and an arrest is pending. While at Smoker's Choice, officers received a report of shots fired and a person with a firearm on Union Street at the Maria's convenience store, Police found no evidence of a discharged firearm, a store employee was checking the business for a break in & legally possessed a firearm, police discovered that a burglary was attempted at Maria's prior to the Smoker's Choice burglary. The investigation is ongoing.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli reported that the total cost of overtime in 2021 reached an all-time high at more than $924 million, up 8.7% from 2020. Total overtime hours worked at state agencies have increased by 38% since 2012, while the number of employees has declined by more than 10% at 10 major agencies. 66% of the state’s overtime in 2021 came from the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities & the Department of Corrections and the Office of Mental Health.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchack announced that 38 year old Shandel Terry of Binghamton was sentenced to 10 years in prison today in Broome County Court, following a guilty plea for criminal possession of a controlled substance. Terry was arrested following the execution of a search warrant in March of 2021, Terry possessed crack cocaine & fentanyl with intent to sell. Terry was also sentenced to serve 3 years of post release supervision at the conclusion of his jail term.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Matthew Fenelon of Brooklyn for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & a variety of other charges, following an investigation of a Rollover accident in the Town of Franklin July 5th. Deputies reported that the vehicle was operated by Fenelon, he was extricated from the vehicle and transported to a hospital by LifeNet. Deputies found that Fenelon was operating a vehcile with a suspended registration, his driving privileges were also suspended. On July 8th, Deputies made contact with Fenelon after he was released from the hospital & he was arrested & was released on appearance tickets for Town of Franklin Court at a later date.

Delaware County Chamber of Commerce will hold its "3rd Friday Business & Breakfast" event this morning at the Hamden Inn. Featured speakers are Deborah Roberts and Ivana Guzy of Friends of Recovery of Delaware and Otsego Counties on ways to create recovery-friendly workplaces to eliminate barriers for those impacted by addiction. Delaware County Sheriff's Office have arrested 29 year old Victor Grandel of Brooklyn. Deputies responded July 2nd to an accident scene on County Route 21 in Franklin, where the vehicle had been reported stolen out of New York City in June, a search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of drugs, drug paraphernalia, a loaded firearm, and cash. 3 individuals occupying the vehicle were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries, Grandel was taken into custody by Deputies and charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was arraigned & was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending a future court appearance. Arrest warrants were issued for the other 2 occupants of the vehicle.

State Police reported that 6-year-old Onnex Thompson-Hall was found dead at around 6:40 Sunday evening. Police said that the boy was autistic, and his body was in a pond not far from his home in Washington County. Investigators believe the death to be an accidental drowning, the boy was reported missing late Sunday morning, the investigation is continuing.

The State Comptroller's office audited the West Colesville Volunteer Fire Company, the audit found that the board did not have sufficient controls or information to ensure all disbursements were appropriate and necessary. As a result, the company made unnecessary disbursements totaling $4,107, the board also could not determine whether all collections were properly recorded or deposited.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is warning people of a phishing scam claiming the state is offering $1,500 rebates because of high gas prices, where the scammers send text messages instructing people to click the link to see if they qualify, the link leads to a website designed to look like the actual DMV site. It asks for personal information, State officials report that this is an attempt at identity theft or to install malicious software on computers or cell phones. If you suspect you may have been contacted through a phishing scam, you can email the DMV at: dmv.sm.phishingattacks@dmv.ny.gov.

The Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak announced that 45-year-old Donnell Bailey of Binghamton will serve 1 to 3 years in prison after pleading guilty to failure to comply with the New York State Sex Offender Registration Act. Bailey failed to provide an address to local law enforcement in 2021 while living in Broome County, he was convicted in 20 years ago for criminal sexual act.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 58-year-old Dale Beach of Franklin for criminal mischief for an incident last month. Beach is accused of damaging a vehicle by throwing rocks at it in the town of Otego, he was arrested and faces court action shortly.

The Broome County Health Department reported an increase in overdoses this year. This year there have been 44 fatal overdoses and 258 suspected non-fatal overdoses already reported, more information about treatment programs can be found at gobroomecounty.com/boac.

During a routine property check the Sidney Police Department located an open door in the back of the former Grand Union building behind McDonald's on Wednesday. Officers called for assistance and During the building search, 2 individuals were found inside the building illegally. 37 year old Peter Puglisi of Sidney and 39 year old Thomas Dugon of Afton were charged with 3rd degree Burglary, Possession of burglar tools & Attempted Petty larceny. Both men were arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & were released on their own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.

Village of Sidney Police Department with the assistance of the Hancock Police Department, Arrested 31 year old Jon Speller of Hancock on an active arrest warrant issued by the Village of Sidney Court. The arrest stems from an investigation into a complaint of a Family Court order of protection being violated over 20 times in a two week period. Speller was arrested and charged with the 21 counts of Criminal contempt, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $750 bail.

Broome County DA Mike Korchak announced that 30 year old Austin Whitney of Binghamton was sentenced to 25 years to life in State Prison, for the 2nd degree murder of Anthony Cebula. Whitney admitted to killing Cebula by striking him in the head repeatedly with a hammer in Binghamton in January of 2021.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office reported an inmate death at the Otsego County Jail Sunday afternoon, after correction officers found a unresponsive inmate in his cell during rounds. The inmate was pronounced dead at Bassett Medical Center, The State Commission of Corrections and the Attorney General's Office are reviewing the case.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that 29 out of the 54 counties in New York State have a high number of COVID-19 cases. Counties in the "high" category on the CDC's COVID-19 tracker have more than 200 cases per 100,000 or have COVID-positive patients in more than 10% of hospital beds. The CDC said that residents of counties in the "high" category should wear masks indoors. Locally Broome County & most counties North & West of Broome are in the "high" category.

The State Attorney General's office, County Sheriffs Offices and District Attorneys reported how much money law enforcement agencies have seized, following investigations into drug crime, Fraudulent business practices & other criminal activities. Of the 62 Counties in New York State, Broome County DA's office ranked 7th with seizures over $121,000.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal Motorcycle crash on Interstate 88 near the Port Crane exit in the Town of Fenton Sunday afternoon around 3:45 PM. 2 overturned motorcycles and 2 injured people were located by EMT"S & Deputies, 32-year-old Joshua Callahan of Halfmoon was found unresponsive and laying in the roadway and 40-year-old Radames Gonzalez of Plattsburgh, suffered non-life threatening injuries. Attempts were made to revive Callahan, but he was declared was eventually declared dead at the scene, Gonzalez was transported to Wilson Hospital.

Local government sales tax collections grew by 21.1%, or $901 million, in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Broome County saw the highest County growth at 24.3%, Of the cities that impose their own sales tax, Norwich saw the biggest jump in the first quarter at 30.8%.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Alexander Rogers of the Town of Hartwick for Burglary, Grand Larceny, Criminal Mischief, Conspiracy & Criminal Trespass for a series of forced entry burglaries at commercial businesses in March and April. On April 17th, at 2:30 AM, Deputies were dispatched to a report of a burglar alarm activation, the business had been broken in to and multiple automated teller machines were tampered with. Rogers was arraigned and was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are expected.

36 Year Old Jonas Whaley of the Town of German pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime in US District Court in Syracuse. Whaley was arrested in September of 2021 & As part of his guilty plea, he admitted to possessing 50 grams of an illicit substance containing methamphetamine, plus handguns to protect himself while distributing drugs. Whaley faces sentencing on August 23rd.

Otsego County District Attorney's office announced the conviction of Bradley Cook of Oneonta for 2 counts of 1st degree criminal sexual act, for performing sexual acts with a minor under the age of 11 on 2 occasions. Cook will be sentenced June 24th.

Beckwith said that any distributions tomorrow will depend on how quickly NYSEG gets power restored to Chenango County Residents.

The Otsego County Department of Emergency Services announced that Dry ice and bottled water will be available for pick up this evening at the Unadilla fire station and the West Exeter fire station from 6 PM – 9 PM or while supplies last. They also announced that the Emergency shelter at the Armory in will cease operations tomorrow, at 12 Noon. The Clark’s Sports Center will remain open until further notice. Edmeston Central School will be open this evening from 5:00M – 9 PM for Edmeston residents to come and get warm, get a hot meal and a hot shower.

40 organizations in the region were awarded grants totaling $287,684 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York. Funded Organizations included museums, theater groups, libraries, human service agencies, animal welfare organizations, chambers of commerce, food banks, housing programs, and public safety agencies and other nonprofits, municipalities, and school districts. Attorney General Letitia James distributed the 1st round of payments from the opioid settlements to the Southern Tier. In 2022, the Southern Tier will receive a total of $4.8 million, from the $1.5 billion settlement Attorney General James secured with the manufacturers and distributors of opioids for prevention efforts. Later this year, the Southern Tier will receive additional payments from the settlements with Endo Health Solutions, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Allergan. Locally Broome County receives $1.6 Million dollars, Chenango County, $308,000, Delaware County: $327,000.

The Board of Trustees of Hartwick College announced today that they have selected Darren Reisberg, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at the Joyce Foundation, as the College’s 11th president, he will take office on August 1, replacing Dr. Margaret Drugovich, who announced her retirement earlier this after serving as Hartwick College President for 14 years.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond awarded Deputy Samantha Acuna with the Sheriff’s Superstar Award for meritorious service while in the performance of duty. On April 8th, Deputy Acuna was dispatched to a “routine” welfare check following a call to 911 with an “open line”. Upon gaining entrance to the residence, Deputy Acuna found a male victim suffering from an apparent stroke, rendered first aid and immediately called for medical assistance, and likely saved the victim’s life.

42-year-old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport, New York, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to 2 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, 2 counts of distribution of child pornography, and 1 count of possession of child pornography. Hoyt is being held pending sentencing scheduled for August 24, 2022, he faces at least 15 years and up to 110 years imprisonment on the charges, and a fine of up to $250,000.

NYSEG reports that thousands are still without power this morning across the region. Broome County had more than 15,000 customers without power, Chenango County over 9,600, Delaware County over 5300, Otsego County with more than 6300, earlier today.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 40 year old James Williams of Port Dickinson was sentenced to 5 years in jail for a guilty plea of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Williams was arrested in 2019 after Johnson City Police executed a search warrant where Williams was found to be illegally in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

New York State has updated driver's licenses and state IDs for the first time since 2013. The new look includes enhanced security features & anyone who applied for a new permit, license or non-driver ID card after March 10th will receive the new and improved card. Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin submitted his resignation to Governor Kathy Hochul yesterday, after he was arrested following a Federal Investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s office said Benjamin was charged with bribery, honest services wire fraud and falsification of records. Benjamin was accused in an indictment of participating in a scheme to obtain campaign contributions from a real estate developer in exchange for Benjamin’s agreement to use his influence as a state senator to get a $50,000 grant of state funds for a nonprofit organization the developer controlled. Governor Hochul accepted the resignation.

State Troopers responded Sunday to a domestic incident that involved an attempted break-in at a residence on County Highway 54 in the town of Springfield. 37 year old Kenneth Carson of Springfield attempted to enter the home of a known acquaintance and discharged a firearm while outside, he is also accused of having illegal Ghost Guns. Carson was charged with Attempted Burglary, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Manufacture of a Machine Gun, Reckless Endangerment & Criminal Mischief. Carson was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $45,000 bond.

Binghamton Police & First Responders rescued a woman who jumped into the Susquehanna River shortly after 12:00 Noon Tuesday. Officers tried to persuade the woman not to jump into the River, from the Washington Street Bridge, she did & was successfully pulled out by the Binghamton Fire department rescue boats. The unidentified woman was taken to Lourdes Hospital for treatment.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that Cross Tie Disposal of Kentucky and company Vice President Harold Young are charged in a 42-count indictment that includes 30 counts of Falsifying Business Records and 11 counts of Endangering Public Health, Safety or the Environment. Cross Tie was supposed to dispose of old wood beams that were coated with creosote at a regulated site in Erie County but instead dumped the ties, contaminated with 11 hazardous substances at a property in Chenango County. The railroad ties have been removed as part of the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency’s Chenango County Rail Revitalization Services project in 2015 to repair and improve railroad tracks throughout the county.

Fire destroyed 3 commercial buildings in Worcester Friday Night into Saturday Morning. The buildings were not occupied when the fire broke out, several area fire departments assisted Worcester Firefighters with the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office assisted the US Marshals in executing an arrest warrant in the Town of Maryland on 59 year old Michael Hawkins for failure to register as a sex offender. Hawkins was convicted in 1997 for child molestation in Rhode Island, he faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

State Senator Fred Akshar was filing his petitions to run for the office of Broome County Sheriff at the Broome County Board of Elections office in Binghamton today. Akshar has collected over 3,100 signatures from registered Republicans in Broome County in support of his run for Broome County Sheriff, Akshar declined to run for re-election after serving in the State Senate for 3 terms.

The Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that a grand jury has filed charges against 2 murder suspects in Broome County Court regarding unrelated homicide cases. Mitchell Lindow was charged with 1st degree murder in connection to a December 2nd stabbing, where Lindow allegedly killed David Royes while committing a felony burglary at 110 Main Street in Binghamton by stabbing him multiple times. Korchak also said that Kyle Babola is charged with 2nd degree murder for the killing of Scott Grover with a machete in Johnson City. Both face court action at a later date.

The State Office of Cannabis Management announced proposed regulations for the Medical Cannabis Program that implement certain provisions of the state’s new Cannabis Law. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act included updates to the program designed to consider environmental impacts and create efficiencies, & also includes technical changes to the regulations to formally shift the program from the Department of Health to Office of Cannabis Management. The regulations were submitted to the Cannabis Control Board for its review and approval at its meeting on Thursday, i the Board approves, the regulations will advance to a 60-day public comment period.

The Binghamton Police Department arrested 36 year old Marquetta James of Connecticut for 2nd degree arson, in connection with the fire at 159 Conklin Avenue yesterday. Binghamton Police Detectives found James at a local hotel, Authorities stated that James was an acquaintance to 1 of the residents in the building. 20 adults and 9 children were displaced by the fire.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced the results of an audit of the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES Procurement practices. The audit found that the purchasing agent made 22 purchases with 7 purchases totaling $49,300, where competition was not sought, as required. Staff could not provide documentation to support efforts were made to obtain the best price.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched Tuesday to a report of a hit and run motor vehicle accident on State Highway 10 in the Town of Delhi. 30-year old Michael Laureanti of Delhi, rear ended another vehicle and fled from the crash scene, he was located & further investigation revealed that Laureanti was operating the vehicle at the time of the accident while his driver’s license was suspended due to a failure to pay child support. Laureanti was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident, he was released on traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

For the first time since 2019, property tax levy growth for school districts will be capped at 2%, up from 1.23% last year, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The tax cap limits annual tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2%. School districts may override the cap with 60% voter approval of their budget. The 2% levy limit affects the tax cap calculations for 676 school districts and 10 cities with fiscal years starting July 1, 2022,

As the rise of the Omicron variant continues to threaten the safety of our nation’s health care workforce, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the Biden administration to continue and make permanent the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) emergency COVID-19 protections for health care workers, after OSHA let the temporary requirements to lapse:

Gillibrand said that the safety measures must be re-instated as soon as possible, as more than 120,000 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 nationwide, further straining overworked health care workers and hospitals facing severe staffing shortages.

The Chenango County District Attorney's Office reported that Cody Coleman of Smithville Flats, appeared in Chenango County Court on December 20th to accept that plea bargain, for the murder of his 16 year old Girlfriend Amelia Wakefield in May of 2019. The case was scheduled to go to trial in May of 2020, but was delayed by the COVID 19 pandemic. Chenango County District Attorney's office offered a plea deal, the charge was lessened from murder to manslaughter, Coleman is scheduled to be sentenced on February 28th in Chenango County Court.

Delaware County Public Health is migrating away from individual case investigation and contact tracing, following a decision by the state Health Department yesterday to stop contact tracing. On Monday, the State Legislature rejected the 2 two sets of district maps submitted by the state's Independent Redistricting Commission, so more work is ahead to solidify final voting-district lines, The Commission has 1 more chance to draw new voting-district maps for congressional and state legislative races.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares is dropping a criminal charge against former Governor Andrew Cuomo for allegedly fondling an aide in Albany last year. Soares' decision comes just before Cuomo was due in court this week to answer to the misdemeanor charge, The Albany DA's decision follows other jurisdiction's prosecutors dropping similar charges against Cuomo. The Albany County charges were filed by the Sheriff's Office last October, Cuomo has denied those specific allegations.

The Otsego County Health Department reported 81 new COVID 19 cases on Monday, with 7 hospitalized 398 active cases, and a 12% seven day rolling average positivity rate. Officials remind Otsego County Residents to adhere to the Mask Mandates now in effect until February to try to stop the spread of the highly contagious Omicron Variant.

The Otsego County Department of Motor Vehicles announced that their office will be closed this week & will re-open on Monday January 10th. The office was closed due to COVID 19 issues among the DMV staff, residents can still perform transactions at dmv.ny.gov.

Delaware County Public Health reported 279 new positive cases of COVID 19 in their latest report covering Thursday through Monday, the positivity rate was up to 15.3%. Delaware County has 462 positive cases with 375 quarantined, there have been 85 deaths from the virus during the pandemic.

Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James announced that New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and New Jersey filed a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to continue their lawsuit against the federal government for the Trump Administrations cap on the deduction for state and local taxes, known as SALT. The petition asks the Supreme Court to review an October 2021 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that upheld the district court's rejection of the states' suit, which argues that the SALT cap was a politically motivated bid by the former federal administration to interfere with the policy choices of Democratic led states.
