US Senator Charles Schumer is calling for more stream and river guages for New York State. Schumer is urging passage of the Obama Administrations 2014 budget, which includes 36.2 million dollars for the gauge program, an increase of 7.3 million dollars. The budget also includes 63 million dollars for the USGS Cooperative Water Program, an increase of 400 thousand dollars. Schumer would like see up to 300 new stream guages installed nationwide, with New York State being given particular focus. Schumer said that if approved, the funding would go into effect October 1st. More than $1.1 billion in unclaimed life insurance benefits have been recovered nationwide after an investigation by New York regulators. The state’s Department of Financial Services said many insurance companies are not using lists of recent deaths from the Social Security Administration to determine whether a policy holder had died. New York regulators will direct insurers to go to NYPolicyFinder.com, to help residents locate lost life insurance policies and annuity contracts.
The Afton Fair and Agricultural Exposition continues today with Animal exhibits, the Youth Dairy Show, Children's activities, Youth bicycle drawing, and Floral Hall Display. The Grandstands open at 5pm tonight for I-88 Speedway Racing featuring Modified, Sportsman, IMCA Modified, Street Stock, Front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders and the Empire Sport Trucks all racing beginning at 7pm tonight at the Afton Fair Grounds. East Main St is closed from North/South Broad Streets (State Hwy 12) to Silver St. All businesses will have access from alternate or rear locations. You can expect parking spaces to be limited. East Main Street will re-open at approximately 9:00 pm Sunday.
The 37th Carnival of Sales will be held tomorrow on Main Street in Unadilla, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Organizers said that there will be Village wide yard sales, crafters, artisans and food vendors, Brooks chicken BBQ, children’s activities, live entertainment, car show and more. Johnson City Police arrested 43 year old Christopher T. Davis of Johnson City and charged him with second degree murder. Davis allegedly killed his downstairs neighbor, 50 year old Patricia LaCaprara Monday in the course of an apparent burglary at 36 Brown St. in Johnson City. Davis was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility. Also arrested in the course of the investigation was 20 year old Binghamton resident Zachary Franks, who was charged with several warrants. Police are still investigating if Franks had any involvement in the case. Davis and Franks told authorities they are relatives. Anyone with information about the case can contact the Johnson City Police Department at (607) 798-9321.

Andrew Cuomo's education reform agenda, will enlist 250 math and science teachers from four regions this fall to mentor early-career educators. The New York State DOT will hold a public information meeting tonight to discuss a project to replace a bridge on State Route 30 & 206 over the East Branch Delaware River in the Town of Colchester. The meeting will be held at the Colchester Town Hall located at 72 Tannery Road, Colchester, at 7:00 PM. The bridge has been in use for 60 years and DOT inspectors have determined that it needs to be replaced. Three alternatives will be discussed at the meeting.

The K Bar F Rodeo is Thursday night, I-88 Speedway racing on Friday night, The Open Horse Show on Saturday and Sunday, and Kaitlyn Jackson performs Saturday night with fireworks to follow at dark, and Sunday will feature the Afton Fair Idol Contest, along with the Catskill Garden Tractor pullers and T.O.Y.S. Otsego county public health announced that a child safety seat check will be held today at the Oneonta Home depot from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Parents & expectant parents are invited to make an appointment for the event at 547-4230; parents are reminded to bring the manual for their safety seat that they are currently using.

New York State’s Medicaid program overpaid providers 11.4 million dollars according to state Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli. Dinapoli said it is largely due to overstated amounts by providers and incorrect rate changes. Dinapoli blames weak controls and poor supervision of the program. Only 3.8 million of medicaid overpayments have been recovered.
An Oneonta man, wanted on a parole violation, was arrested on felony burglary and other charges. The burglary report came from a Spruce Street resident and police are investigating recent burglary attempts on Elm Street to see if the incidents are connected. 26 year old Tim Button was arrested Sunday. Button was charged with second-degree burglary. Button also was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and pety larceny, and was sent to Otsego County jail on $10,000 bail.
State Troopers arrested 19 year old Mike Foley of Port Crane, for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana and Unlawful Possession of Alcohol by a person under the age of 21, following a traffic stop on State Route 7 in the Town of Colesville. Foley was issued an appearance ticket for town of Colesville court at a later date.
State police arrested 75 year old Peter Pizzillo of Margaretville for 3rd degree assault following a complaint in the village of Margaretville. Pizzillo was arraigned in town of Roxbury court and sent to the Delaware County Jail on $250.00 bail.
Hartwick College in Oneonta is featured in the 2014 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges as one of the country’s best and most interesting colleges. The guide includes about 300 colleges and universities from among more than 7,000 higher education institutions across the country. The schools were chosen based on areas such as academics, social life, financial aid, campus setting and extracurricular activities.
An underage drinker initiative detail from the State Police checked retail convenient stores in Otsego County in Worcester, Milford, Hartwick, Cooperstown and Richfield Springs. Arrests were made at the Pit Stop in the town of Hartwick and at Stewart's Shop in Richfield Springs. Police charged 31 year old Ajay Ghiaar of Cooperstown and 21 year old Victoria Oldick of Fort Plain for unlawfully selling alcohol to a person under the age of 21.
The Delaware County Office for the Aging has announced that Farmers Market coupons for senior citizens 60 years and older are now available. Eligible Delaware County seniors can receive twenty dollars worth of free New York State grown produce. State Police arrested 39-year-old Evelyn Augusto of Sandy Hook, Connecticut for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, as well as other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations after a traffic stop on State Route 30 in the Town of Middletown in Delaware County. Augusto was arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court and released on her own recognizance to reappear at a later date.
Delaware County Fair officials today announced that there would be a 5K run at the fair this year.
