The 2nd trial of former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver gets underway today in New York City. Silver was convicted of using his political influence for political favors; the conviction was tossed last summer, when appellate judges in the 2nd Circuit ruled that the definition of “official acts” had been changed by a previous Supreme Court decision in the public corruption case of former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 35 year old Daniel White of Mt. Upton for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, use of a Vehicle without an Ignition Interlock Device, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, plus several other traffic violations, on Circle Drive in the Village of Sidney. White was arraigned at the Village of Sidney Court and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2500 cash bail. White is scheduled to return to the Village of Sidney Court at a later date to answer the charges.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released a report on the recently enacted state budget. DiNapoli’s report finds the enacted budget increases General Support for Public Schools by 3.4% and provides an additional $50 million in competitive grants for prekindergarten, after-school and other programs. The Budget holds flat most direct aid to local governments; it is funded at $715 million, the same level for the last 6 years. The budget also maintains the appropriation for the Environmental Protection Fund at $300 million.
Hartwick College has received a $300,000 grant from The Clark Foundation to help fund a new Hospital Suite Simulation Unit for the College’s nursing department. The new equipment will be located in repurposed space in Smith Hall. The grant will enable the College to better prepare its nursing students to enter the field, and grow the department by another 10 students. This is the fourth such award from the Foundation since 2011.

Governor Cuomo announced nearly $2.2 million will be awarded to 34 farms across the state through the Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program, to help farms reduce their operational impact on the environment and better prepare for and recover after extreme weather events. In the Southern Tier; Chenango County Soil and Water Conservation District was awarded $77,255 to work with 6 farms to implement cover crops, which are planted to improve soil quality, reduce erosion, and to increase soil organic matter to improve resiliency during periods of flood and drought.
Broome County Special Investigators seized 200 bags of heroin, drug packaging materials, marijuana and $300 in suspected drug money from a Chenango Street residence in the City of Binghamton. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Task Force on Wednesday executed a search warrant at 66 Chenango Street. Police arrested 38 year old Juan Delacruz of Binghamton on a felony drug possession charge. Delacruz was arraigned in City of Binghamton court and remanded to the Broome County Jail.
State Senator John Bonacic announced Friday that he will not be running for another term. Bonacic has served in the state Senate for 20 years & has served in elected office for more than 4 decades. Bonacic’s 42nd District includes the Masonville, Delhi, Hamden, Walton, Tompkins and Colchester.
State Senator John DeFrancisco said Friday he will not seek re-election and plans to end his 40-year career in politics when his term expires at the end of the year. DeFrancisco had considered a run for Governor but he announced Friday that he will retire from the Senate & from politics.
Officials with Afton Motorsports Park announced that the practice for drivers originally rescheduled for tonight has been postponed. An announcement is expected later in the week regarding the status of Friday's race schedule.

Polling locations across the 102nd State Assembly District are open until 9:00 PM this evening, for the special election to replace former area assemblyman Pete Lopez, who accepted a position at the Federal EPA Last year. Candidates include Independent Wesley Laraway, Democrat Aidan O’Connor Jr. & Republican Christopher Tague.

Utica Police arrested an Oneonta couple for allegedly scamming Utica area businesses. Joshua Eckman and Michelle Schaffner are accused of attempted to collect refunds on orders they never placed by contacting businesses and saying they received an incorrect order, then demanding a refund. The pair are charged with misdemeanor attempted petty larceny and conspiracy and will face court action shortly.
Binghamton Police responded to 14 Doubleday Street Sunday for the report of a man being shot in the face. The unidentified 29 year old victim was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City & was transported to Syracuse for surgery; the victim was serious condition Monday. Police reported that the victim was approached by the suspect, & was shot, the suspect was wearing dark clothing, may have been with another man, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Binghamton Police Detective Division at (607) 772-7080.
State DEC Officials are reminding area residents that the State's Burn ban is still in effect. The announcement comes as warm temperatures and very dry conditions have led to a series of grass & brush fire in the tri-county area in the last few days. State officials are reminding residents not to burn brush or trash until May 14. Officials said that Today's air in Upstate New York is drier than in Las Vegas.
The Social Security Administration introduced the expansion of online services for residents of New York, through socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Residents of New York can use the portal for replacement Social Security number card requests. The agency is conducting a gradual roll out of this service. New York is one of the states where this option is already available. The service will mean shorter wait times for the public in the more than 1,200 Social Security offices across the country. More information about this new online service is available at socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber.
Local animal lovers can drop off donations of pet supplies at Oneonta Bus Lines/Eastern Travel. Toys, cat litter, and pet beds will be accepted; donors will be able to select a gift certificate in return for the donation. Items can be dropped off weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Oneonta Bus Lines/Eastern Travel offices at 41 Orchard Street, Oneonta.
On May 1st, Commerce Chenango will thank local businesses for their participation and support of the Chamber at the annual Report to the Membership Luncheon, at the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich. The lunch will serve to recognize retiring business owner Hal Skillin of Skillin’s Jewelers. Chamber members can call 334-1400 to reserve a seat.

This action follows the release of the New York State Plastic Bags Task Force report in January, which outlined the environmental impact of plastic bags, single-use bag reduction measures, and proposed actions that the state could take to reduce pollution and protect New York's natural resources, including a ban on single-use plastic bags. New York residents use 23 billion plastic bags annually, the bags do not biodegrade and they persist for years.
