24-year-old Joshua Theisen, of Suffolk County was pronounced deceased following an ATV crash into a drainage ditch on Jones Road in the town of New Lisbon. Otsego County Sheriff's Office reported that Theisen was not wearing a helmet and was ejected off the ATV, which landed on top of him, suffered a severe head injury & died on Tuesday as a result of his injuries.
New York State’s private sector job count grew by 4,500, or 0.1 percent, in September 2014, according to preliminary figures released today by the State Department of Labor. This latest monthly employment gain raised New York State’s overall private sector job count to more than 7.6 million, which is an all-time high. The statewide unemployment rate declined from 6.4% to 6.2% in September 2014, its lowest level since October 2008.
Governor Cuomo said $10 million in grants were awarded to localities across the State to support emergency response operations. Administered by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the grants support municipalities that operate 9-1-1 response and emergency service dispatch operations. Chenango County will receive just under $175,000, Delaware $117,000 and Otsego $161,000
New York will receive $343 million in heating and home energy assistance from the Department of Health and Human Services. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand joined a bipartisan group of 46 Senators, in urging HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell, to release Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program funding as quickly as possible, to ensure more families can access resources they need to heat their homes this winter. LIHEAP is the main federal program that helps low-income households and seniors with their energy bills, providing assistance during both the cold winter and hot summer months
On Election Day in November, voters will find a proposition that could save taxpayers $53 million a year. It’s called Proposition 2 – the state’s attempt to go completely digital. In a two-year legislative session, 17,000 proposals are printed for the states 213 lawmakers. The state's printing costs for a single year is about $13 million. In addition, the state pays another $40 million just to haul it all away, which costs taxpayers a total of $53 million annually. If the proposal is approved, every bill would be a digital file only

One man was killed and 4 other people were critically injured in a serious two-car motor vehicle accident in the town of Colchester on Thursday morning, The crash occurred at about 10 AM on County Highway 7, Delaware County deputies & state police responded, the male driver of one of the vehicles was killed, 4 occupants in the other vehicle, were critically injured & transported to trauma centers in the Hudson valley region. The names of those involved in the accident are being withheld until notification is given to the families, the investigation is continuing.
A mid-level appeals court reversed a lower court’s decision to throw out petition signatures of a Republican state Senate candidate. The state Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled the lower court erred in rejecting the petitions of Tioga County businessman Denver Jones, who is seeking to unseat State Senator Tom Libous of Binghamton. On August 1st the state Board of Elections determined 743 of the 1,713 signatures Jones submitted in July were invalid due to residency issues and other problems. The new order states a total of 203 signatures are reinstated, giving Jones more than required 1,000 signatures. The decision is not final, the case was sent back to the lower court for further proceedings.
The Delaware County Department of Corrections announced that the 4th annual Andrew Brown Memorial Golf Tournament would be held tomorrow at Hardwood Hills gold Course in Masonville, with a tee time of 8:30 AM. Organizers announced that the money raise with this years tournament will go to the family of Johnson City Police officer David Smith, who was shot & killed in the line of duty on March 31st.
Governor Cuomo's campaign will not appeal a ruling allowing Zephyr Teachout to remain in the Democratic primary. A state appeals court rejected the campaign's argument that Teachout has spent part of the past five years in Vermont. A lower court had already ruled Teachout could stay on the ballot for the September 9th primary. Teachout teaches at Fordham University Law School in New York City. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found 85 percent of state Democrats said they know too little about Teachout to have any opinion of her.
The Binghamton Mets clinched their second straight postseason berth as a result of the New Britain Rock Cats' 10-1 loss to Richmond Thursday night. The berth marks Binghamton's 8th trip to the postseason in franchise history, winning the Eastern League Championship in 1992 and 1994.
The Drug Enforcement Administration will enforce tighter control over prescriptions of the painkiller hydrocodone. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said hydrocodone would be moved from a Schedule III drug to a Schedule II in 45 days. This will mean greater restrictions in how doctors can prescribe the drug as well as the quantity that can be prescribed. According to the DEA, nearly seven million Americans abuse controlled-substance prescription medications, including opioid painkillers that contain hydrocodone.

Oneonta Police reported that I-88 Westbound near Exit 13 has been shut down due to a jack-knifed tractor-trailer between exits 13 and 12 shortly before noon today. Traffic was diverted at Exit 13, motorists were detoured to State Route 7 or County Route 48, and were allowed back on the interstate westbound at exit 12 in Otego. The investigation is continuing.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer will introduce a bill called ‘Avonte's law.’ The bill would create a program that provides and pays for tracking devices for at-risk children with autism. Schumer said it would be similar to a Federal program that tracks seniors with Alzheimer’s disease. 14 year-old Avonte Oquendo disappeared after running out of his school last October. His remains were found in the East River last week.
The State Comptroller’s Office auditors found the Afton Fire Department is not providing adequate oversight of taxpayer funds & their bylaws are inadequate and not being followed with regard to financial oversight, and they did not have a code of ethics. The audit of the Harpursville Central School District showed that they raised taxes unnecessarily by maintaining a fund balance more than 5 times the legal limit. auditors found that the Harpursville District is not using enough of its leftover money at the end of each budget year to reduce taxes in the following year. Drivers will now be alerted to curves in the road along a section of State Route 8 in Chenango County. The State Department of Transportation installed flashing beacons in the towns of Norwich, New Berlin and Columbus, after they conducted a traffic study. The beacons became operational Friday to alert drivers to slow down ahead of the curves.
State Police arrested 59 year old Steven Coffey of Binghamton for aggravated DWI, with a BAC result of .25%, more than 3 times the legal limit following a traffic stop on I-81 in the town of Chenango. Coffey was arraigned and released without bail . a court date has not been set.
State Troopers from Oneonta and Margaretville conducted an Underage Drinker Initiative detail this weekend. The troopers conducted a check of retail convenient stores throughout Otsego County in the City of Oneonta and Towns of Oneonta, Otsego, Richfield Springs and Milford. all 12 stores were checked and all 12 were found to be in full compliance with all New York State laws.
Delaware County and SUNY Delhi will host the 2nd annual regional energy and sustainability symposium On March 8th, to educate residents and business owners on cost saving options. State Police at Oneonta arrested 27 year old Matt Jones and 32 year old Jeremy Ferguson, both of Oneonta, on charges of 4th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and 3rd degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, following a traffic stop on Main Street in Oneonta Saturday night. Jones was also charged with 3rd degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a license. Jones and Ferguson were sent to the Chenango County jail on bail.
State police at Sidney arrested 56-year-old Martin Cornish of Bainbridge for aggravated DWI with a BAC result of .20%. The arrest followed a report of erratic driving on State Route 7 in Bainbridge, Cornish was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge Court on February 10th.
