Governor Cuomo announced the final report and recommendations of the Common Core Task Force. The Task Force recommends overhauling the current Common Core system and adopting new, locally driven New York State standards in a transparent and open process. The Task Force also recommends that current Common Core aligned tests should not count for students or teachers until the start of 2019-2020 school year to ensure the system is implemented completely and properly to avoid the errors caused by the prior flawed implementation.

The Oneonta police department special response team is scheduled to work in cooperation with the Greater Plains Elementary School to conduct a school lockdown drill today. There are now 7 confirmed positive cases of pertussis in the Walton area, according to Delaware County Public Health. County officials are continuing to work with the Walton Central School, physicians, and the community to identify and notify students and residents that have possibly been exposed. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air by cough. Pertussis begins with cold symptoms and cough, which becomes much worse over 1-2 weeks, it is generally treated with antibiotics. More information is available at 832-5200.

New York State's education commissioner Mary Ellen Elia stated that next spring’s Common Core tests would be shorter. Elia spoke to the Board of Regents Wednesday in Albany, she said that some of the writing and reading passages will be removed and the math assessments will lose some multiple-choice questions. The controversial tests are given statewide to 3rd to 8th grade students each spring to measure student and teacher performance. Elia said that teachers would have a greater role in developing the tests when the state begins working with new vendor Questar for the 2017 school year.

This Fall's effort is focused on Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie counties, among others in the capital region, It is directed at agricultural and non-agricultural professional pesticide applicators, schools and businesses like golf courses, cemeteries and marinas. The State Department of Health today announced amended vaccination regulations for children entering or attending school. School children will now be mandated to receive a complete series of all required vaccines – or be in the process of doing so – in order to attend classes. Beginning September 1, children entering or attending kindergarten through grade 12 will be required to have two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Children entering kindergarten through grade 5 will need to have five doses of the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and a cellular pertussis. Children entering kindergarten, and grades 1, 6 and 7 must have four doses of the polio vaccine. Children who have not yet received all required vaccine doses must schedule appointments with their health care providers to complete the vaccine series in order to remain in school.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to protect children across New York State from exposure to second-hand smoke. The bill prohibits individuals from smoking near schools while after-school programs are in operation. This bill expands the ban on smoking within 100 feet of the entrances, exits or outdoor areas of public and private schools to prohibit smoking during after-school programs. The ban would be in effect only during those hours in which the after-school programs are in session. Residences or residential property within the 100 foot perimeter would be excluded from the new ban.

State Police at Sidney arrested 36-year-old Celia Daniels of Oneonta for Aggravated DWI with a child less than 15 years old and Endangering the Welfare of a Child plus several other traffic violations. The arrest occurred after a trooper responded to a Chenango County 911 report of an erratic driver who struck a guide rail on Interstate 88 in the Town of Bainbridge. Daniels is accused of being intoxicated while having her 4-year-old daughter as a passenger. Daniels was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge on August 24th.

A group of Parents in the Harpursville Central School district, known as "STOP" has sued the school Board for violating open meeting laws. The lawsuit claims that the board voted to remove one administrator and reassign another in the elementary school, despite a number of parents voicing opposing the plans, the lawsuit also claims that the school board has not maintained the legally required minutes.

Sidney drug bust - On Thursday afternoon, after a 5-month investigation by Delaware County Sheriff's Office & Sidney Police, 4 area residents were arrested and charged as felony-level drug dealers. Arrested on Sealed Grand Jury Indictment Warrants issued were 37 year old Lewis “Sonny” Wolcott, Jr., of Sidney on 3 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling cocaine in Sidney late last year. Also arrested, 35 year old Stacey D. Sullivan, Jr., of Masonville, for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in or near School Grounds, for allegedly selling Heroin in Sidney, 34 year old Douglas Wilkinson of Sidney & Smyrna was charged with several counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling narcotics in Sidney. 34-year-old Amanda Caffery of Sidney was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance for allegedly Hydrocodone in Sidney, all 4 were arraigned on the Sealed Indictments in Delaware County Court this afternoon and were remanded to the Delaware County without bail.
State Police at Sidney arrested 24-year-old Brandon Burns of Sidney and 22-year-old Taylor Nelson of Afton for 2nd degree Burglary. Troopers responded to a Chenango County 911 report of a burglary to a residence on County Route 39 in the Town of Bainbridge, the investigation determined that Burns had entered his grandmother’s home with Nelson & without permission and stole two televisions. Both men were arrested and arraigned at the Bainbridge Town Court. Burns and Nelson were remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000.00 cash bail and $20,000.00 property bond.

A Town of Unadilla resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Deputies & State Police arrested 39 year old Jacob Conklin on an active Arrest Warrant during a routine traffic stop in the Town of Bainbridge, he is accused of stealing a 1997 Toyota from a driveway in Afton and scrapping it for cash at Gary’s U-Pull it in Binghamton. Conklin was arraigned in the Town of Afton court and is being held in the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000.00 cash bail. Conklin is to reappear in the Town of Afton court on a later date.

Voters in New York State approved of all area school budgets yesterday, with the exception of the Walton district. Building projects were approved in Sidney & Unadilla Valley, Walton voters rejected a building project proposal by a better than 3 to 1 margin. Kjersti Van Slyke-Briggs, Marissa Orezzoli, Nancy Parsons & Thomas Hoskins won school board seats in Sidney.
