The Top projects this year include the 7 Hawley Street Redevelopment in Binghamton & the Southern Tier Health Sciences and Technology Innovation Park in Binghamton.

Governor Cuomo announced the final report and recommendations of the Common Core Task Force. The Task Force recommends overhauling the current Common Core system and adopting new, locally driven New York State standards in a transparent and open process. The Task Force also recommends that current Common Core aligned tests should not count for students or teachers until the start of 2019-2020 school year to ensure the system is implemented completely and properly to avoid the errors caused by the prior flawed implementation.

The Chenango County Law Enforcement Association will be hosting “Shop with a Sheriff” at Wal-Mart in Norwich, Saturday. Deputies will take children Christmas Shopping, who will be provided with money raised by the Association & donations from local business, individuals, and each Deputy. The children shopping with the Deputies were selected by each school district throughout Chenango County.

The Bainbridge Guilford central school district board of education is currently seeking indivduals interested in filling a vacant seat on the board. Candidates must be a qualified voter in the district, 18 years of age, among other qualifications. The village of Bainbridge DPW announces that they will be repairing a water leak in front of the Scoville Meno Dealership starting at 2:00 AM on Monday. Water will be shut off is all 4 directions for about 200 feet of the leak, traffic restrictions will be minor, the work is excepted to take about 6 hours.

A job fair today at the Oncenter in Syracuse aimed to match up more than 1,000 job seekers with 5,000 open positions throughout the Central New York and into the Southern Tier. Openings at the job fair ranged from healthcare and food science to manufacturing. The job fair was organized by the state Department of Labor; the fair was the largest on ever arranged by the agency.

The city of Oneonta announced that the final paving of Asphalt on 6th Street is scheduled for today. 6th Street will be blocked off after the morning drop off period and should be re-opened in time for afternoon pick ups, any delays or changes will be communicated to the school offices.

Governor Cuomo today announced that the State Liquor Authority has approved a host of advisories to help support the continued growth and development of New York’s beverage manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers. Governor Cuomo convened the state’s 3rd Beer, Wine, Spirits and Cider Summit last week, where industry participants raised specific legislative and regulatory issues facing the industry. The Oneonta police department special response team is scheduled to work in cooperation with the Greater Plains Elementary School to conduct a school lockdown drill today. The event will provide the Oneonta SRT Team the opportunity to train in full gear, and it will give students & faculty a chance to become familiar with evacuation procedures in case of an emergency.

There are now 7 confirmed positive cases of pertussis in the Walton area, according to Delaware County Public Health. County officials are continuing to work with the Walton Central School, physicians, and the community to identify and notify students and residents that have possibly been exposed. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air by cough. Pertussis begins with cold symptoms and cough, which becomes much worse over 1-2 weeks, it is generally treated with antibiotics. More information is available at 832-5200.

AARP Smart Driver Course is being offered, it covers defensive driving techniques, changes in health, and up to date information on new changes in laws and road markings. The Cost for the course is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. New York State's education commissioner Mary Ellen Elia stated that next spring’s Common Core tests would be shorter. Elia spoke to the Board of Regents Wednesday in Albany, she said that some of the writing and reading passages will be removed and the math assessments will lose some multiple-choice questions. The controversial tests are given statewide to 3rd to 8th grade students each spring to measure student and teacher performance. Elia said that teachers would have a greater role in developing the tests when the state begins working with new vendor Questar for the 2017 school year.

Nearly 200 new Troopers were honored for their perseverance and dedication in completing the 203rd session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy.

The State DEC announced that the Fall CleanSweepNY program will be held the week of September 28, CleanSweepNY provides an opportunity to ensure proper disposal of unwanted and obsolete pesticides and other chemicals, Pre-registration is required, with a registration deadline of September 18th. This Fall's effort is focused on Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie counties, among others in the capital region, It is directed at agricultural and non-agricultural professional pesticide applicators, schools and businesses like golf courses, cemeteries and marinas. The State Department of Health today announced amended vaccination regulations for children entering or attending school. School children will now be mandated to receive a complete series of all required vaccines – or be in the process of doing so – in order to attend classes. Beginning September 1, children entering or attending kindergarten through grade 12 will be required to have two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Children entering kindergarten through grade 5 will need to have five doses of the vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and a cellular pertussis. Children entering kindergarten, and grades 1, 6 and 7 must have four doses of the polio vaccine. Children who have not yet received all required vaccine doses must schedule appointments with their health care providers to complete the vaccine series in order to remain in school.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to protect children across New York State from exposure to second-hand smoke. The bill prohibits individuals from smoking near schools while after-school programs are in operation. This bill expands the ban on smoking within 100 feet of the entrances, exits or outdoor areas of public and private schools to prohibit smoking during after-school programs. The ban would be in effect only during those hours in which the after-school programs are in session. Residences or residential property within the 100 foot perimeter would be excluded from the new ban.

State Police at Sidney arrested 36-year-old Celia Daniels of Oneonta for Aggravated DWI with a child less than 15 years old and Endangering the Welfare of a Child plus several other traffic violations. The arrest occurred after a trooper responded to a Chenango County 911 report of an erratic driver who struck a guide rail on Interstate 88 in the Town of Bainbridge. Daniels is accused of being intoxicated while having her 4-year-old daughter as a passenger. Daniels was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge on August 24th.

The Bainbridge-Guilford Central School district will be holding it’s annual mandatory parent-student meeting for JV and Varsity athletics in the Fall season. The Otsego County Planning Department has received a $660,800 grant from the New York State Division of Homes & Community Renewal to replace dilapidated owner-occupied mobile homes in the county with new, modern, energy-efficient manufactured homes. Eligibility requirements are: the Applicants’ annual household incomes may not exceed 80% of the county median, Applicants must own the existing mobile home: renters in trailer parks are not eligible. The property must be the owners’ permanent, year-round residence, Properties with outstanding liens or mortgages are not eligible, also Property and school taxes must be current. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a meeting Saturday, about water diversions and releases from the Cannonsville Reservoir. The meeting will be at 10:00 AM Saturday at the Hancock Central School, a DEP representative will provide information about the repairs and the status of the reservoir. The meeting is open to the public.

Bainbridge village officials stated that the water main break has been repaired. Residents may notice brown water for a short period of time, which should clear up after running the tap for a short time.

A group of Parents in the Harpursville Central School district, known as "STOP" has sued the school Board for violating open meeting laws. The lawsuit claims that the board voted to remove one administrator and reassign another in the elementary school, despite a number of parents voicing opposing the plans, the lawsuit also claims that the school board has not maintained the legally required minutes.

Governor Cuomo announced that more than $18 million in economic development funding for 19 projects state wide. In the Southern Tier Region, Corning Diesel will receive $3,000,000 for the purchasing of machinery and equipment to support the company’s facility expansion in Steuben County. The Broome County IDA & Indian Valley Industries, will get $728,500 to acquire a manufacturing facility and to relocate within Broome County. The site of their existing facility is slated to be used for a new Pharmacy School in Johnson City.

On Sunday Afternoon at 1:00 PM, Edmeston seniors will graduate.

19th district Congressman Chris Gibson will be in Franklin today. The Congressman will appear at 5:30 PM for the Franklin Veterans Memorial flag presentation at the Village Park, Gibson will present a flag from the U.S. Capitol to be flown over the park in honor of local veterans. At 7:00 PM, Congressman Gibson will deliver the commencement address to Franklin High School graduating seniors, at the Franklin High School.

State Lawmakers are still in Albany, Governor Cuomo told reporters Monday night that sticking points in the Assembly revolved around New York City Rent Regulations, and the State Senate wants to provide School Aid to charter & private schools.

Voters in the Walton Central School District decided to pass its budget Tuesday by a slim vote of 511 people in favor and 510 opposed. The $20.5 million spending plan lowers the tax levy by 5%.

Sidney drug bust - On Thursday afternoon, after a 5-month investigation by Delaware County Sheriff's Office & Sidney Police, 4 area residents were arrested and charged as felony-level drug dealers. Arrested on Sealed Grand Jury Indictment Warrants issued were 37 year old Lewis “Sonny” Wolcott, Jr., of Sidney on 3 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling cocaine in Sidney late last year. Also arrested, 35 year old Stacey D. Sullivan, Jr., of Masonville, for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in or near School Grounds, for allegedly selling Heroin in Sidney, 34 year old Douglas Wilkinson of Sidney & Smyrna was charged with several counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling narcotics in Sidney. 34-year-old Amanda Caffery of Sidney was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance for allegedly Hydrocodone in Sidney, all 4 were arraigned on the Sealed Indictments in Delaware County Court this afternoon and were remanded to the Delaware County without bail.

State Police at Sidney arrested 24-year-old Brandon Burns of Sidney and 22-year-old Taylor Nelson of Afton for 2nd degree Burglary. Troopers responded to a Chenango County 911 report of a burglary to a residence on County Route 39 in the Town of Bainbridge, the investigation determined that Burns had entered his grandmother’s home with Nelson & without permission and stole two televisions. Both men were arrested and arraigned at the Bainbridge Town Court. Burns and Nelson were remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000.00 cash bail and $20,000.00 property bond.

The Sidney Central School District announced today that they are not soliciting funds for any informational folders/calendars or other items from an outside organization. Sidney School District Officials advise that you do not give money or personal banking information to any individual without checking with the school district first.

A Town of Unadilla resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Deputies & State Police arrested 39 year old Jacob Conklin on an active Arrest Warrant during a routine traffic stop in the Town of Bainbridge, he is accused of stealing a 1997 Toyota from a driveway in Afton and scrapping it for cash at Gary’s U-Pull it in Binghamton. Conklin was arraigned in the Town of Afton court and is being held in the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000.00 cash bail. Conklin is to reappear in the Town of Afton court on a later date.

Voters in New York State approved of all area school budgets yesterday, with the exception of the Walton district. Building projects were approved in Sidney & Unadilla Valley, Walton voters rejected a building project proposal by a better than 3 to 1 margin. Kjersti Van Slyke-Briggs, Marissa Orezzoli, Nancy Parsons & Thomas Hoskins won school board seats in Sidney. School Board seats in the Bainbridge Guilford district were Tina Ammon, Keith Hanvey & Rebecca Sullivan, in the Norwich district, Jennifer Collins, Robert Smith & Joseph Stagliano in Franklin Jamie Archibald was elected to the school Board.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 18-year-old James Shurock of Sherburne on 11 counts of Petty Larceny. Shurock is accused of stealing 109 library books from the Sherburne-Earlville High School Library, he was released on an appearance ticket to the Village of Sherburne Court at a later date.

The B-G Central School District is seeking 2 Community members interested in serving on a Varsity Football Coach Selection Committee. The first meeting will be held tonight at 6:00 PM in the District Conference Room. Candidates will be interviewed next week, with the appointment by the BG School Board expected at their June 18th meeting.
