Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced that his office has obtained a judgment against home improvement contractors who ripped off customers in the Southern Tier and Central New York by going door-to-door seeking to pave and repair driveways. The contractors performed shoddy and incomplete work, intimidated customers into paying more than the negotiated price, and failed to abide by New York’s home improvement contract laws. Schneiderman entered into an agreement to settle his investigation against Joshua Cooper of Ovid and Robert Cooper of Romulus, who were doing business as Finger Lakes Asphalt. the Coopers will be required to pay $8,150 in restitution to 6 consumers

The Broome County Sheriff's Office responded to a car & school bus crash this morning shortly after 7:00 AM, on at State Route 79. Deputies reported that a Harpursville Central School District bus was rear-ended; none of the 26 students were injured. 2 passengers in the car suffered injuries, with one being sent to an area hospital for neck pain. The names of the passengers have not yet been released.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to Expand and strengthen services for veterans, active service members and their families. The new law eases the transition to a new school for children of military families that relocate as a result of military orders, lowers the cost of higher education for Veterans receiving benefits under the GI bills, and offers military family members greater flexibility with professional licenses received from other states or jurisdictions. The new law also strengthens the supplemental burial assistance provided by the state to military families when a service member dies in combat or as a result of injuries sustained on the battlefield.

Community members will honor those who died in the American Civic Association shooting five years ago with a special ceremony Saturday at 1:00 PM. Those in attendance will remember the 13 victims of the ACA shooting, at the downtown memorial on the corner of Clinton and Front streets in Binghamton. The ACA Memorial includes a central granite column with a glass shaft rising from the center that is illuminated at night. Symbolizing the tragedy's rippling effect in the community are 13 sculptures of illuminated birds in flight.
Thousands of New York parents refused to have their children take the statewide English assessments that were given this week. Parents are protesting the state education policy that puts a lot of emphasis on testing & interferes with time in the classroom for actual learning. Results of the 3-day assessments don’t count toward student averages, but they do factor into teacher and school evaluations. It is estimated that more than 25,000 of the more than 1 million third- through eighth-graders in the testing pool, skipped this week’s tests.

The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 33-year-old Jarred Cutting of Masonville for endangering the welfare of a child in the town of Bainbridge. Cutting is accused of using excessive corporal punishment on a child under the age of 16, resulting in visible marks on the child. Cutting will appear in the Town of Bainbridge Court at a later date.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer will introduce a bill called ‘Avonte's law.’ The bill would create a program that provides and pays for tracking devices for at-risk children with autism. Schumer said it would be similar to a Federal program that tracks seniors with Alzheimer’s disease. 14 year-old Avonte Oquendo disappeared after running out of his school last October. His remains were found in the East River last week.
The State Comptroller’s Office auditors found the Afton Fire Department is not providing adequate oversight of taxpayer funds & their bylaws are inadequate and not being followed with regard to financial oversight, and they did not have a code of ethics. The audit of the Harpursville Central School District showed that they raised taxes unnecessarily by maintaining a fund balance more than 5 times the legal limit. auditors found that the Harpursville District is not using enough of its leftover money at the end of each budget year to reduce taxes in the following year. State police at Sidney arrested 56-year-old Martin Cornish of Bainbridge for aggravated DWI with a BAC result of .20%. The arrest followed a report of erratic driving on State Route 7 in Bainbridge, Cornish was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Bainbridge Court on February 10th.
