Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Monday in the Town of Chenango to meet with a domestic violence victim in the Town of Colesville. The female victim and her 2 young children fled their residence due to a physical dispute, Deputies utilized the Lethality Assessment Program and advocates from Crime Victims Assistance Center responded to provide victim safety and support services. 30 year old Timothy Backes of Windsor is accused of violating an order of protection & physically assaulting the victim, Deputies located Backes & charged him with 2 counts of Criminal Contempt, Aggravated Family Offense & Harassment, he was taken to Broome County Central Arraignment and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility, he attempted to contact the victim to solicit funds for bail, violating the Order of Protection again, he was additionally charged with another count each of of Criminal Contempt & Aggravated Family Offense, & was remanded after arraignment on the new charges.
The Bainbridge Lions Club has started a fundraiser to purchase their own camera to test children's eyes at several area school districts, spokesman Cliff Crouch said that they previously borrowed the device, but they would like to get their own camera & continue the program more efficiently:

A Lawsuit was filed in Broome County Supreme Court against the Vestal School District where a former Vestal High School student alleges that economics teacher Robert Carr asked her to meet him, he allegedly kissed the victim numerous times, groped her inappropriately and continued to force sexual activity upon her until she moved to the state of Texas and changed her phone number. The lawsuit claims that School Officials did not take any action against Carr after learning of the accusations.

NYSEG crews responded to the report of a blown transformer at their Sidney Substation near Patterson Street. About 3300 were without power for about an hour this morning. This afternoon there were about 330 without power in Sidney and another 60 in Bainbridge. The Sidney Central School District has revealed its new nickname, During the monthly Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, where a group of students unrolled string backpacks to show the new nickname to the Board. The Sabers were selected out of three finalists, which also included the Lions and Rough Riders. The Sidney School District was 1 of about 60 New York State public school districts that used a nickname or mascot connected to Native Americans, a State Supreme Court ruling in June 2022 established that public school districts are prohibited from utilizing the nicknames and mascots.

It was determined that the student was suffering from a mental health crisis and did have a firearm in his possession while at school. The student did not make any direct threats or display a weapon at any time. The juvenile was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds and appeared before a judge in Otsego County Supreme Court - Youth Part. Investigators applied for an Extreme Risk Protection Order and the juvenile was transported for a mental health evaluation.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 20 year old Anton Becker-Harris of Binghamton for Unlawful Fleeing, Reckless Driving after he allegedly drove on sidewalks in Binghamton early Friday. Deputies observed Becker Harris drive a motorcycle on the sidewalk and on the grounds of Calvin Coolidge Elementary School, they attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the motorcycle sped away, Deputies found the motorcycle hidden behind a dumpster with Becker-Harris & his female passenger walking nearby. Becker-Harris was taken into custody without incident, was processed & faces court action at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 33 year old Adam McKrell of Port Crane for 3 Counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, plus Unlawful Imprisonment, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration & Harassment, after a physical domestic incident in the Town of Fenton. Deputies responded Friday to the Town of Fenton, McKrell was outside yelling at his girlfriend & was preventing her from leaving the premises. McKrell refused to comply with deputies, resisted arrest and after a State Trooper deployed a Taser on him, he was taken into custody. McKrell is accused of striking the female in the presence of 3 children, he was arraigned at central arraignment and released. He is due to appear in the Town of Fenton Court at a later date.

Deputies responded Thursday afternoon to the Harpursville School District Bus, Wilcox is accused of entering the stopped bus and began yelling, screaming, swearing and threatening juveniles, according to witnesses & video. There were 30 students from elementary school to high school ages on the bus. Wilcox was taken into custody without incident at his residence, he was processed at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility and released on appearance tickets for the Town of Colesville Court at a later date. The investigation is continuing.

Hancock Commencement exercises began this morning, other districts with ceremonies today include Afton, Andes, Charlotte Valley, Deposit, Downsville, Edmeston, GMU, Laurens, Milford, Morris, South Kortright, Schenevus, Unatego & Windsor. Saturday Graduation ceremonies will include Sidney, Bainbridge Guilford, Norwich, Oneonta, Delaware Academy, Greene, Harpursville, Oxford Academy, Unadilla Valley, Sherburne Earlville & Walton. 2 area district will hold their ceremonies on Sunday, they are Cooperstown & Worcester.
The State Comptroller's Office audited the Afton Central School District, , they found that the Afton Board and District officials did not effectively manage the District’s fund balance, so they levied more taxes than needed to fund operations and were not transparent with taxpayers. The Board annually overestimated appropriations by an average of $1.1 million or 7%. The District incurred $63,561 in unnecessary interest and other associated costs for the issuance of bonds to purchase school buses. The Comptrollers office recommended adopting realistic budgets, Reduce surplus fund balance to comply with the statutory limit to benefit taxpayers. The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Tadd Sherwood of Oneonta following an investigation of a violation of a Court issued Protection order. Sherwood was charged with 2 counts of Criminal Contempt , for allegedly contacting the protected party of an order of protection, while incarcerated in the Otsego County Correctional Facility, Sherwood was arraigned at Otsego County Central Arraignment, he was remanded back to the Otsego County Correctional Facility & was scheduled to appear in the Town of Middlefield Court on a later date.

State Trooper Richard Albert has been released from Ellis Hospital after being shot last week after stopping a vehicle speeding on I-88 in the town of Duanesburg. Trooper Albert approached the vehicle, and a passenger reached out the driver-side window and opened fire on Trooper Albert, striking him in his left upper arm. Trooper Albert returned fire. The shooter and the driver exited the vehicle, and the shooter fled on foot. The driver was taken into custody uninjured at the scene. The shooter has been identified as 32 year old Nelson Troche of Schenectady and he was located approximately 90 minutes later in Duanesburg, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, he was taken to Albany Medical Center where was pronounced deceased.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 2 juveniles for 3rd degree Assault, following an incident at the Charlotte Valley Central School on April 12th. The Preliminary investigation by Deputies revealed that a physical altercation had occurred where the victim was physically injured, both juveniles were charged, and were issued a juvenile appearance ticket and were directed to report to the Delaware County Probation Department at a later date.

Several Area Fire Departments were called to the scene of a structure fire on Mary Brown Road in the town of Laurens this morning At about 9:10 AM. Firefighters from Laurens, Hartwick, Milford, West Oneonta, Morris & Oneonta have responded, The fire was called in an occupant, who reported that all other occupants escaped without injuries. Some of the businesses that followed the state's laws were B&W Wines & Liquors, of Bainbridge, Mirabito's in Bainbridge & Afton, & Snake Bite Liquors in Afton. During the initiative, retail establishments are checked using a trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operative(s) who, if asked, cannot lie about their age or give a fake date of birth. The General Clinton Canoe Regatta committee will hold their 1st meeting at 7:00 pm tonight at Galaxy Bowl in Bainbridge, people are invited to attend & give input on next year's regatta.
