Firefighters responded to the report of a Structure Fire at 26 Cushman Street in New Berlin Thursday Evening. The fire was confined to a garage & no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation, the New Berlin & South New Berlin Fire Department responded.


State Police & local Emergency Crews responded to a 2 Vehicle Head on Collision near the intersection of State Routes 7 & 8 this morning, shortly before 8:00 AM. State Police reported that the crash occurred when a 22-year-old male from Plymouth, lost control of his vehicle stuck a minivan, driven by a 31-year-old male of Norwich, the mini van was overturned in the accident & the driver was transported to AO Fox Hospital's Tri-Town Campus for treatment. The investigation is continuing.


State Police were dispatched to a 1-vehicle rollover on Route 7B in the town of Fenton last night. Troopers located the driver, 40 year old Billy Knickerbocker of Kirkwood, with serious injuries; he was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City for treatment. Knickerbocker was charged with Driving While Intoxicated & was issued appearance tickets to the Fenton Town Court on December 2nd.


The Chenango County Health Department is offering a Pfizer Vaccine clinic for children ages 5 and up on November 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in Norwich in the South Plaza. More information is available at co.chenango.ny.us.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital will be hosting a vaccination clinic for eligible individuals looking to receive a booster or third dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The Greater Oneonta Historical Society is planning an online Auction starting at 5:00 PM today, and they will also return with an in person Auction November 19th, as their 2 main Fundraisers this year. State Police responded to a 3-vehicle crash in the town of Guilford Sunday night shortly before 8:00 PM. Troopers and multiple EMS and fire personnel responded to the intersection of County Road 35 and State Highway 8, where a Dodge Pickup traveling eastbound on County Road 35 and a Ford Fusion was traveling north on State Highway 8. The Dodge Ram entered the intersection and struck the Ford Fusion then struck a Subaru Forester which was stopped at the intersection on County Road 35. The operator of the Fusion was a 36-year-old female of New Bedford, Massachusetts, & the passenger was a 30-year-old female of Port Leyden, New York, they were taken to Wilson Hospital with serious injuries. A 5-year-old female, a 7-year-old female and a 3-year old female all of Port Leyden, were transported to Tri-Town Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The 69 year old man driving the Dodge was evaluated at Tri-Town Hospital and released. His passenger, a 37-year-old male was not injured. The operator & a passenger in the Subaru were taken to Tri-Town Hospital then to Wilson Hospital. The crash remains under investigation.


Sidney Police Department received a complaint Friday Morning of a fight in progress in the parking lot of the Smiley's convenience store on West Main Street. The investigation revealed that it was a home invasion at the residence above the convenience store. 2 males entered 17 West Main Street by force, they took a small safe or lock-box, they got into a physical altercation with a resident, a witness called 911 and also give a description of the vehicle & license plate number. State Police assisted & arrested 22 year old Lucas Tanner of Franklin, Friday, he was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, 2nd degree Robbery, plus Conspiracy & Petty larceny, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 bail. The 2nd suspect is still at large and is expected to be identified & arrested shortly.


State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released his office’s annual report on the Wall Street Securities Industry. Wall Street’s run of prosperity extended into the first half of 2021 with $31 billion in pre-tax earnings, beating 2020’s outsized first half profits of $27.6 billion, even as job losses accelerated in New York City’s securities industry. DiNapoli said that State revenues in the first half exceeded initial projections by $5.2 billion, because of Wall Street and the increased income taxes on wealthy New Yorkers, however, the report shows that despite the profitability, jobs are being relocated elsewhere, New York will have lost about 9,000 securities jobs, bringing the total down to 175,000.

George Carnrike III has joined the leadership team at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital. The Norwich native will serve as the hospital’s security supervisor, he has 10 years of law enforcement experience, including as a City of Norwich police officer until 2016.

Chobani is partnering with Swipe Out Hunger to help local colleges feed students in need. This collaboration will support efforts to stock food pantries or to establish students accounts in order to purchase hot meals. The partnership will also support efforts to provide food for students at SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick College, and several colleges in the Mohawk Valley. The Village of Sidney Board of Trustees will hold a Public Hearing on the Local Law #3 tonight at 7:00 PM at the Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street. The proposed local law is for the Village to Opt-out of the Dispensaries and places of consumption for the newly passed marijuana legalization by the State, copies of the proposed Law are available at villageofsidney.org.


The State Health Department Test Results Reports the positivity rate continues to trend downward, with 162,737 tested for COVID Saturday, with 2,861 positive tests, which was 1.76% of those tested. Patient Hospitalizations are down to 2,007, Patients in an ICU bed were down to 453, Patients on ventilators was down to 245. New deaths reported by healthcare facilities was 32 on Saturday.

UHS hospitals announced that they are temporarily suspending visitation for all areas of Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, Binghamton General Hospital and all UHS Primary & Specialty Care locations in the greater Binghamton region. UHS officials announced that the temporary suspension is due to the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19, more information about the exceptions is available at nyuhs.org.


The Village of Sidney is beginning to gather the community’s ideas for reusing publicly owned land near the Susquehanna River. Sidney is 1 of 2 communities Statewide to receive support from The Nature Conservancy, Sidney Grants Manager Clarissa Walrath said that the village received a $60,000 grant to deal with flood mitigation issues:

Walrath said that after the surveys are out to the public, a planned workshop on Thursday, November 11 at 5:30 PM, the meeting will focus on community’s vision for types of outdoor amenities that would enhance the Village, it will be held as an online Zoom meeting. Niles said that the Forum is a County owned building, so all in attendance must wear masks at the shows Tues & Wednesday nights.


The latest federal figures from the CDC show almost 2/3rds of New Yorkers are fully vaccinated against COVID 19. About 12.7 million of New York’s 19 million residents are fully vaccinated, Locally County Heath Departments have reported between 50 & 60% vaccination rates.

Nasir Azmat of Franklin accepted a plea deal Friday in the Town of Sidney court, he pleaded guilty to overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals. Azmat was sentenced to 60 days in jail followed by 3 years of probation; he cannot own, possess or register animals during the 3 year probation. Azmat will also be placed on the Delaware County Animal Abuse Registry. Azmat was charged in February 2020 after Delaware County Sheriff's Office found 20 dogs in deplorable conditions on Azmat's property, the dog were allegedly used for dog-fighting.


Delaware County Public Health reported 1 more COVID death, 39 new positive cases, 11 hospitalized & 311 Quarantined, for Thursday & Friday of last week. The County positivity rate remains at 8.46%. Delaware County has had 60 deaths since the start of the pandemic. The county has had 51% of residents fully vaccinated.


The State Health Department tested over 208,000 Saturday for COVID 19, with over 4200 testing positive, which was just about 2% of all tested. Patient Hospitalizations are down to 2,086, Patients in an ICU bed was down to 450, & the number on Ventilators was down to 247, new deaths was 36 on Saturday.

The Otsego Health Department reported a 60th COVID death, following a review of recent death certificates.  The Department reported 10 new cases of COVID Thursday with 59 active cases & 5 hospitalized, their latest positivity rate was at 2%, 41 of the 60 deaths attributed to the virus have been reported since January 1st.


Chenango County Public Health reported 18 new COVID cases today, bringing their total to 3256 since the beginning of the pandemic.  They reported 109 active cases, 460 Active Quarantines & 4 Hospitalizations.


New updated guidance for graduation and commencement ceremonies goes into effect tomorrow in New York State.  Indoor and outdoor graduation and commencement ceremonies will be allowed with limited attendee capacity, depending on the event size and the location. All event organizers and venues hosting ceremonies must follow the State’s safety protocols, including requiring face masks, social distancing, health screenings and collection of contact tracing information. This weekend is the 10th annual I Love My Park Day at state parks, historic sites and public lands across New York. UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital is holding its first walk-in COVID-19 vaccine clinic today until 6:30 PM at the Awestruck Tap Room in the Sidney Industrial Park.  Today will be a 1st dose Moderna vaccine clinic; it will be followed up with a 2nd shot clinic for today's participants on Thursday May 27th, also at Awestruck in Sidney.  Walk-ins are welcome, anyone wishing to schedule a specific time can call Awestruck at 232-1143.

State Troopers & local fire Departments responded to a bus fire in the northbound lanes on I-81 Thursday.  42 people were on the bus, 4 were injured; 1 person transported to Wilson Hospital for burns, 2 were taken to Binghamton General for smoke inhalation and 1 person was treated at scene.  Both northbound lanes were shut down for several hours just north of exit 7 Castle Creek, the highway was fully re-opened at about 6:20 PM.


The Village of Sidney’s annual Arbor Day tree planting ceremony will be held this afternoon at 1:00PM at Keith Clark Park. A Sugar Maple tree will be planted, the Sidney Shade Tree Commission has conducted the Arbor Day tree planting tradition since 1994 & Sidney has been designated as a “Tree City USA” community for 24 years.

Delaware County Public Health will be conducting a first dose Moderna COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Thursday May 6th, at 97 Main Street in Delhi.  This vaccination clinic is open to all New York state residents or people who work in New York State over the age of 18.  Registration is mandatory at apps2.health.ny.gov, more information or assistance getting registered is available by calling Delaware County Public Health at 832-5200. Delaware County Public Health reported 8 new COVID cases Thursday, out of 585 tests, they are down to 70 active cases, 6 hospitalized & 152 quarantined.

New York lawmakers are expected to conclude work on the state budget by the end of the day today.  The budget is expected to spend a record 200 Billion dollars & is expected to include an increase in taxes on the state's top wage earners, something that governor Cuomo vowed not to do throughout the pandemic.


State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that Job losses from the pandemic and the economic shutdown were swift and deep as employment declined by nearly 2 million jobs from February to April 2020.   The State Department of Labor showed that less than half of the jobs lost during that time have been recovered, and employment is still more than 1 million jobs below its pre-pandemic levels.  The leisure and hospitality sector has added the greatest number of jobs, nearly 260,000, while the construction industry is farthest along in its recovery, regaining 74 percent of jobs lost.


State Police arrested 37 year old Eric Brimlow of Worcester for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, after a trooper observed a vehicle at a high rate of speed on I-88 in the town of Worcester.   Brimlow failed field sobriety tests; he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the town of Worcester court on April 13th.  Brimlow was one of 50 drivers arrested for DWI or similar charges in the Troop C area in the month of March.


Chenango County Public Health continues to report 132 Active COVID Cases, with 9 hospitalized & 453 Quarantines.  Chenango County has had 2879 Total Confirmed Cases since the pandemic started, with 2597 recoveries, & 65 deaths.


A Fundraiser is underway to replace a failing 10 year old ambulance owned by the Village of Sherburne, Village Mayor Bill Acee explains:

Over 10 million COVID vaccine doses have been administered in New York State, according to the latest State Health Department statistics.  1 in 3 new Yorkers have had at least 1 dose of a vaccine & nearly 1 in 5 have received are fully vaccinated.  The latest information is available at ny.gov/vaccinetracker.


Starting today UHS & Lourdes hospitals will ease visitation restrictions.  Visitors will be required to wear a mask, use designation entrances, & will be screened before entry.  2 visitors will be allowed per adult patients in single rooms & 1 visitor per patient in double rooms.  .   Lourdes, Wilson & Binghamton General Will have visitations from 3:00 to 7:00 PM daily & UHS Chenango Memorial in Norwich & UHS Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton will have visiting hours from 9:00 to 11:00 AM & 4:00 to 6:00 PM daily.  Visitor’s restrictions will be different for pediatric patients, maternity patients & in the emergency rooms.


About 400 NYSEG customers in Sidney lost power Easter Sunday after a transformer fire on Patterson Street.  NYSEG reported that power was out for the Sidney Customers from about 10 hours Sunday.


Norwich Police arrested 44 year old John Earl Bush Sr. of Sherburne for Robbery, Burglary, menacing & Petty Larceny  Charges.  Bush is accused of breaking down the door of a Norwich home, robbing an individual at knifepoint & leaving the scene with property & cash.  Bush was arraigned in Norwich City Court & was being held without bail pending future court action.  Norwich Police were assisted by New York State Parole & the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office.
