35 Year old Ciera Washington of the Bronx pleaded guilty in US District Court to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and aggravated identity theft. Washington admitted that from April 2023 through October 2024, she worked with 2 others to steal the personal information of Medicaid beneficiaries and use that information to fraudulently obtain prescription medications from pharmacies throughout New York State & the Northeastern States, which caused a loss of nearly $4 million to the Medicaid program and tens of thousands of dollars to pharmacies. Washington agreed to forfeit over $400,000 in proceeds from her crimes and to consent to an order of restitution for the losses they caused. Washington faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment on the fraud count and a mandatory term of 2 years on the aggravated identity theft count, which must run consecutively, when sentenced in October in Federal Court, She also faces a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than $10 million in funding was awarded to 20 projects as part of Round 2 of the Municipal Parks and Recreation (MPR) Grant Program to fund the development and improvement of municipal parks and recreation sites statewide for the public to enjoy. Funding for this program was provided by the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. 1 of the awards will go to the City of Norwich, they receive $810,000 to improve safety, accessibility and play opportunities by replacing aging playground equipment, court space and safety surfacing at the park on Hale Street.

The Norwich Business Improvement District announced today that Public art will be coming to Downtown Norwich. Development Chenango Corporation was awarded $600,000 for a Downtown small project grant fund, $350,000 was spent supporting property owners’ renovations. The remaining funds, along with donations from Friends of the Park and local foundations, have been allocated to public art for Downtown Norwich. Awarded artists will design and install five sculptures and one mural Downtown! The Norwich Public Art Initiative, a committee formed to steward the project, has launched a request for artist qualifications as the first phase of the project, final proposals will be selected by December 1, with anticipated installation of the art work in spring 2027.
State DEC announced several changes to deer hunting regulations to increase harvest of female deer and improve DEC’s ability to manage abundant deer populations. Under the new system, all hunters will receive a first Antlered Deer Tag which can be used during any season, except the September antlerless season. New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets has put new rules in place for bringing domestic animals into the State to stop the spread of the New World Screwworm after cases were found in Texas and New Mexico. The State is restricting the movement of livestock and pets from areas affected or suspected to be affected by the parasite, so far there have been no cases detected in New York. The new order requires extra veterinary testing, proof of good health, and preventative treatment for animals coming from impacted areas.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has elevated a recall of Alfredo sauce distributed in 41 states to its most serious classification after they say a supplier flagged an ingredient for possible Salmonella contamination. The Coffee Connexion Company of Tennessee voluntarily recalled the product on May 6 because it contains a dry milk powder ingredient that was recalled by the supplier due to potential Salmonella contamination. On June 4, the FDA designated the recall as a Class I event, the agency's highest risk category. The product was distributed in multiple states, including New York, The FDA's enforcement report does not indicate whether any illnesses have been reported in connection with the product.

State Police arrested 26 year old Ryan Gregory of Coram, Wednesday following a neighbor dispute that resulted in a man shot on Houghtaling Hollow Road in the Town of Meredith, Gregory allegedly shot the victim and 2 unoccupied vehicles. A 57-year-old male from Meredith sustained non-life threatening injuries and went to A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, he was later transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. Troopers located Gregory at his local residence where he was in possession of firearms and refused commands to surrender, after several hours, Gregory surrendered and was charged with Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm & Additional charges are likely. A Troy New York man wanted as a suspect in a shooting investigation was apprehended by the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group and taken into custody within 5 minutes of his vehicle triggering a license plate reader in the City of Binghamton. On Wednesday, local law enforcement received an Attempt to Locate bulletin from the Watervliet Police Department regarding a possibly armed male suspect and vehicle wanted in relation to a shooting investigation in Watervliet. The vehicle was located in Binghamton, a traffic stop was conducted at a fast food drive through lane the unidentified suspect was taken into custody, members of the Watervliet Police took custody of the suspect and he was returned to answer for his charges.
Attorney General Letitia James today announced that 74 year old Miles Marshall of Hamilton was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison for operating a Ponzi scheme that fraudulently stole more than $50 million from 988 investors in Madison County and other nearby counties. Marshall convinced unsuspecting clients to invest millions of dollars into his so-called "Eight Percent Fund," claiming that their funds would be primarily used for real estate investments, Instead, Marshall used the funds to pay investment returns to prior investors, cover the expenses of his other businesses, and to fund shopping trips, vacations, and restaurant visits. Marshall's scheme lasted three decades, and in April, he pleaded guilty as a result of investigation.

23 year old Nicolas Arias of Binghamton was arrested after brandishing a knife and threatening corrections officers during a routine transport in Binghamton. On June 2nd, 2 corrections officers were transporting an an inmate after leaving Supreme Court in Binghamton, the Officers were confronted by an irate male who began berating and threatening them & pulling out a knife Officers were able to leave the scene, Arias was found and arrested the next day, for 2 Counts of Menacing a Peace Officer, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Arias arraigned and was released on his own recognizance.

40 year old Michael Salamey of Frankfort appeared in Delaware County Court and was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to 3rd Degree Grand Larceny. Salamey entered into a contract to improve property in the Town of Roxbury, the owner paid him over $360,000 to perform a number of projects, that were not fully completed. Salamey failed to return calls from the owner, he was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury for 2 counts of degree Grand Larceny in 2023, after pleading guilty, Salamey remained at large pending sentencing, State Police located Salamey & arrested him on a warrant, and was sentenced last month.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Health Department provided the public with the latest update on the outbreak of Salmonella that hit the Broome County Correctional Facility. After 11 days, operations at Broome County Correctional Facility have largely returned to normal, Over 120 IV hydration treatments were conducted, 10 individuals were hospitalized, 8 have returned from the hospital, with 2 still receiving treatment. Broome County Health Department showed a positive result for Salmonella in sample of a chicken salad meal served on May 24th, no other meals have tested positive. The Health Department identified multiple violations related to food preparation and storage that could have led to the outbreak. Several of the violations identified are repeat violations that have previously been cited to the food vendor, particularly those involving the cooling of food, The Health Department found no issues with water quality at the Correctional Facility.

Delaware County sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Logan Coss of Grand Gorge for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Intoxicated and Obstructing Firefighter Operations. On May 25th, Deputies responded to assist the Grand Gorge Fire Department and Town of Roxbury Constable at the scene of a vehicle fire, Coss is accused of attempting to obstruct fire fighters and police who were on scene. Coss was released on appearance tickets for Town of Roxbury Court at a later date.

State Police have released the name of the operator of a motorcycle involved in a crash early Wednesday as 39 year old Warren Loza of Vestal. The Investigation revealed that Loza collided with an SUV on State route 434 in the town of Owego, the operator told Police that they did not see the motorcycle coming & pulled out of the road into the lane of traffic, the SUV operator was taken to Wilson Hospital, Loza was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains on-going.

The investigation determined that over the last two years Magro engaged in a pattern of inappropriate sexual contact toward multiple teenage victims, while the victims were employed at Joe and Vinny’s Pizzeria on North Main Street in the village of Sherburne. Magro was taken into custody & was charged with Three counts of Forcible Touching, Four counts of Sexual Misconduct & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Magro was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment. The victims were issued Orders of Protection, Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward, they can call State Police at (607)561-7400.

At approximately 2:03 pm Wednesday, the Otsego County 911 Center received multiple calls reporting a structure fire at Dietz Street Lofts, at 34 Dietz Street in Oneonta, Units arriving on scene found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building. Mutual aid was requested to the scene, and the fire was quickly extinguished. No serious injuries have been reported. One individual was transported for evaluation for possible smoke inhalation. Some residents have been displaced and the American Red Cross is contacting them to ensure they have access to temporary shelter. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Numerous area Fire Departments also responded.

The Madison County District Attorney, State Police, University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville campus that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck back on November 3rd of 2025. The victim was not a student, and was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital for emergency surgery. A Madison County grand jury indicted 19 year old Kido Simon on 6 counts, including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Simon was a student at SUNY Morrisville at the time of the shooting, he is being held at Madison County Jail on bail set at $1,000,000 cash, $1,500,000 bond and $2,000,000 partially unsecured bond. Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3 at the Madison County Courthouse. 1 other person is wanted in connection with this case who remains at large.

The Sheriff;s Office reported that people should never give personal financial information to cold callers, they should hang up, and contact local law enforcement if they feel that they were scammed.

The Oneonta Town Board has approved a 1 year moratorium to stop new data centers or cryptocurrency mining. The moratorium affects plans by Eco-Yotta from building a data center on County Road 9 in the Town of Oneonta, the plan requires State Approval to be implemented.

18 year old Kyle Whitmarsh of Dickinson is facing multiple charges following a motor vehicle theft in the Town of Fenton Monday. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Deputies observed a vehicle speeding out of the Red Apple parking lot, followed by another individual riding a minibike. Patrols located the minibike driver, who advised the deputies that his friend had stolen the car and driven to a nearby park, the owner of the vehicle also reported his vehicle was stolen. State Police responded to the report of a vehicle hit a fire hydrant on Mead Street in the Village of Walton, then backed up and drove away. A Trooper observed a piece of the vehicle’s front bumper near the fire hydrant, found the vehicle matching the description, missing a portion of its front bumper, Giacalone failed field sobriety tests & was arrested, he'll be sentenced at a later date.

Upon arriving, units found a 2 1/2 story farm house with smoke & flames showing, by 3:00 pm the fire was under control, the structure was a total loss and 1 nearby structure was saved, No injuries were reported to the 3 residents or firefighters, mutual aid was provided by several area Fire Departments.

The Joint Investigation accuses Kersman of misappropriation of funds while serving as the Town of Decatur Supervisor from the Town Budget. Kersman allegedly paid himself an additional salary from the town budget that he did not have approval from the board to do so, in the amount of about $2,000. Deputies located Kersman Thursday at his residence where he was taken into custody without incident, he was processed and released with an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Decatur Court at a later date.

Patrick Shea plead guilty to manslaughter and arson, he set a fire to keep warm inside a vacant structure at 1 Main Street in Binghamton on February 12, 2025, the fire led to the death of Binghamton Firefighter J.R. Patrick Shea plead guilty to manslaughter and arson, he set a fire to keep warm inside a vacant structure at 1 Main Street in Binghamton on February 12, 2025, the fire led to the death of Binghamton Firefighter J.R. Gaudet, who died when the building collapsed on him. Shea is expected to serve 7 years in prison as part of a plea bargain arrangement.
The State Department of Motor Vehicles will launch a new technology system, All DMV offices will close at 2:00 PM today, with online and phone services also unavailable during the transition. DMV operations are expected to fully resume on Wednesday.

The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign continues through January 1st. The campaign includes DWI checkpoints and patrols, with officers also monitoring for speeding, distracted driving and violations of the Move Over Law. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 57 year old Gregory Haggerty of South New Berlin, for DWI, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a BAC of .08 or higher, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Failure to Keep Right & several other charges, following a reported accident in the Town of Morris. Haggerty fled the scene on foot, Deputies located the vehicle down an embankment off of State Highway 23 and Wells Rd. Haggerty was located down the road and found to be intoxicated by alcohol, he was taken to the Sheriff’s Office for arrest processing & was released on appearance tickets for the Town of Morris Court at a later date.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Deposit Fire Department responded to a house fire in the Town of Sanford. A candle had accidentally caught a chair on fire in a single family residence. The fire was able to be extinguished by the resident prior to crews arriving on scene. 20 home candle fires are reported each day across the country, If you use open flame candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily. Keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that burns and be sure to blow out all candles when you leave a room or home, or when you go to bed.

When Metterhauser was arrested he had multiple electronic devices that contained the sexual assaults; and child pornography he obtained from the internet.

State Police today announced that they issued 13,036 tickets statewide during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period. Troopers conducted sobriety checkpoints, deployed DWI patrols, and ticketed drivers who were using handheld electronic devices. Troopers arrested 247 people for DWI and investigated 1,277 crashes, including 2 fatal crashes. In Troop C, there were 1232 ticketed, including 21 DWI Arrests, 434 for speeding, 41 for distracted driving & 35 violators of the "Move Over" Law.

Attorney General Letitia James won a court order preventing the federal government from enforcing a provision in the so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" that would strip Planned Parenthood of its Medicaid funds, jeopardizing health care for millions of low-income patients across the country. Attorney General James joined a coalition of 21 other attorneys general and the governor of Pennsylvania in suing the Department of Health and Human Services to block the provision, The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a ruling granting the coalition's motion for a preliminary injunction, ordering HHS to continue paying Medicaid funds to all states and clinics in the coalition.

The investigation began when a 14-year-old disabled child was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor, the unconscious child was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, where it was discovered that he had methamphetamine in his system. Carson admitted that she & 2 male individuals had been using methamphetamine in the same home as the disabled child and the child must have accessed the illicit substance, Carson will be sentenced on January 20th.

54 year old James Baker pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Baker admitted to possessing a significant quantity of methamphetamine, fentanyl, a loaded .38 caliber revolver, about $1400 in cash from suspected drug sales as well as drug paraphernalia. Baker will face 8 years in State Prison with 3 years of post-release supervision for the drug charge, and 8 years in State Prison with 5 years of post-release supervision for the Weapons charge, The sentences will run concurrently. Baker was arrested on March 6, after the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a Search Warrant at 10 Cary Street in Binghamton.
Governor Hochul today announced that 8.2 million checks have now been mailed to eligible New Yorkers under the state’s first-ever Inflation Refund Check program. Over the last two months, inflation refund checks of up to $400 have been mailed to those who meet eligibility criteria. The main phase of large-scale check mailing is now complete, checks will continue to be mailed in small numbers in the weeks ahead as the State Tax Department determines that additional taxpayers are eligible. In the Southern Tier, there will be over 251,000 beneficiaries, receiving over $66.7 Million Dollars.

State DEC announced more than $1.72 million in grants to 6 land trusts for 9 projects that help conserve local forests. The land trusts will purchase new conservation easements that will protect air and water quality, preserve wildlife habitat and biodiversity, support sustainable forest management, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities for the public. Locally, the Otsego Land Trust, will get $54,250 to purchase a conservation easement on the 41-acre Burr Forest property in the town of Westford, adjacent to Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park. The easement property is 90 percent forested, and includes wetlands and hemlock stands, along with large concentrations of native plants.

The State Attorney General’s Office has filed a lawsuit seeking to permanently ban the owners of Royalty Tobacco in the Price Chopper Plaza on Route 7 in Oneonta from selling vape products in the state. The owners of the business; Eysa Sharhan and Anmed Mozed have previously faced charges of selling vaporized tobacco to underage customers, they shut down their businesses and reopened under new names 3 times, the state Department of Health has levied $195,000 in fines against the illegal smoke shop owners, the latest action could shut them down permanently.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Derek Jordan of Milford, 45 year old Keith Blush of Milford & 30 year old Ashley Goble of Milford, on a variety of drug & weapons charges, following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Otsego County Probation Department. On October 9th, Otsego County probation Officers & Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Derek Jordan, who was taken in to custody on traffic offenses, During a search of Jordan’s residence, Blush and Goble were inside the residence, they were wanted by State Police and the New Hartford Police Departments on warrants. Officers observed a firearm, drugs and drug paraphernalia, Jordan and Blush were processed and turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment, Goble was issued an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Milford Court, and she was turned over to New Hartford Police Officers. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.
New York Secretary of State Walter Mosley announced the groundbreaking of a $8.3 million boutique hotel in Norwich as part of the City’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative . The Principle Hotel will have 61 rooms and feature a rooftop lounge, restaurant and event room, The 12,000 square-foot property at 14-16 South Broad Street, was once part of the SUNY Morrisville campus. In addition to the hotel, other DRI projects in Norwich include the Rehabilitation of the Unguentine Building, Improve East and West parks: Upgrade the Martin W. The New York State Department of Health today released a new report showing a continued decline in tobacco use among high school students across the state. The report, shows that 1 in 6 Youth Still Use Tobacco, the lowest since tracking began in 2000. Cigarette smoking remains low, with just over 2% of students reporting current use, E-cigarette use has declined sharply to about 13%, however, Nicotine pouch use is rising, doubling from 1.5% to 3.0% since 2022.

On October 16 at 10:48 p.m., Otsego County requested Forest Ranger assistance in the search for a hunter reported missing by his spouse. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, Otsego County Emergency Services, Garratsville Fire Department, Laurens Fire Department, New York State Police, and New York State Park Police and staff all joined the search efforts in Gilbert Lake State Park. Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy’s located the 67-year-old from Remsen deceased in a tree stand. Rangers used a rope system to help extricate the subject and turned them over to the county coroner, the cause of death has not been released.
State Forest Rangers assisted with Vestal Police and emergency crews in the Town of Vestal on October 15th in the search for a 86-year-old Janice Short, who was reported missing the previous afternoon. Short was known to go for walks on Tracy Creek Road. Vestal Police used a drone with heat detection capability and deployed a K9 unit with negative results. Rangers assigned linear searches of the roads and Tracy Creek, a neighbor found Short behind his house calling for help, after she had fallen into a bush, hurt her back, and saw the lights from searchers, but wasn’t strong enough or loud enough for them to hear. Rangers and Vestal Fire Department members carried the subject, she was checked out & was returned to family.

City of Oneonta officials are asking city residents around the SUNY Oneonta campus to Boil their water before using. on Wednesday the water system lost pressure due to the isolation of a broken water main on East Dormitory Road near the intersection of Bugbee Road on the SUNY Oneonta Campus, which could lead to untreated water containing harmful microbes. Stephen Filan pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon, stemming from the illegal possession of an assault rifle and related firearm components. On May 19th, Binghamton Police responded to a report of Filan in possession of a firearm, he was uncooperative, officers secured a search warrant and an Extreme Risk Protection Order to search Filan’s residence, which resulted in the recovery of a loaded, operable assault rifle with a 25-round magazine holding 24 rounds. Sentencing is scheduled for January 15, 2026 in Broome County Court, Filan will be sentenced to 6 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of Post Release Supervision.
State tax receipts totaled $59.9 billion through September, the middle of State Fiscal Year, $702.2 million higher than financial plan estimates from the Division of Budget, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The FBI arrested 59 year old Peter Bardunias of Clifton Park, for attempting to entice a minor to engage in prohibited sexual activity. The complaint alleges that over the past 2 weeks, Bardunias, who is a Senior Vice President with the Capital Region Chamber of Commerce, sent messages to an individual he believed to be a 15 year-old girl during which he discussed violent and sadistic sexual activity, however the individual was an undercover law enforcement official. Bardunias traveled to meet the would-be minor and was taken into custody. A federal search warrant executed at Bardunias’ residence found sex toys, restraints and a knife, he was ordered held in by a Federal Court judge Tuesday pending a detention hearing set for this Friday.

24 year old Deanna Eignor of Hobart pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Criminal Possession of a Firearm, back on January 12th, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Buena Vista in Delhi for a suspicious person & drug complaint involving 2 vehicles. Eignor was observed getting out of a vehicle with a backpack that contained a firearm. Co-defendant Kenneth Dillmann, previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3½ to 7 years in state prison, Eignor is expected to be sentenced to 1 year in jail for this conviction at a later date.
The Unadilla Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire in the town of Unadilla on State Route 7 near the State Police Barracks, around 12:00 AM earlier today, Unadilla Firefighters were able to make an aggressive push into the residence and contain the fire to the room of origin. Crews were back and in service by 4:45am, Unadilla was assisted by Sidney Fire Department & EMS, and the Wells Bridge, Franklin, Otego & Sidney Center Fire Departments.

State Police are warning area residents following a string of vehicle “smash and grabs” in the region. These crimes involve a suspect breaking windows and quickly stealing valuables from parked cars. Police are reminding residents to remove all valuables from your car, especially electronics, wallets and bags, either take the belongings with you or lock them in the trunk or locked compartment so they are not visible, if possible, park in a well-lit area & report any suspicious behavior or unfamiliar individuals in the area and your neighborhood. State Police are investigating a series of such incidents in recent days in the Dryden and Lansing areas, more information is available at (607) 561-7400.
Area Lawmakers are urging residents to attend meetings on October 7th & 8th by the Public Service Commission, regarding requested rate increases by NYSEG. The Commission is tasked with deciding on Utility Company rate increase requests, the hearings will be at at 1:00 and 6:00 PM at Binghamton City Hall & public comments will be taken. Interested individuals can also submit written comments or use the toll-free 1-800-335-2120 Opinion Line to voice their views on the proposed rate and practice changes. In July, NYSEG filed its “Powering New York” plan regarding replacing the state's aging power grid, in which they claim that the rate increases are needed in order to make upgrades.

Investigators determined that 3 vehicles were stopped in traffic when 58 year old Michele Drossos of Endicott rear ended a Toyota driven by 28 year old Ryan Freita of Endicott, who was pushed into a GMC SUV driven by 63 year old Charles Mann of Endicott, which was pushed into a pick-up truck operated by 45 year old Joshua Malloy-Buczek of Endicott. 2 people were transported to Wilson Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, Drossos was ticketed and faces court action at a later date.

The State Department of Health is urging eligible New Yorkers to get the seasonal flu vaccine, following new federal statistics showing severe complications in children, last year there were 26 pediatric influenza-associated deaths reported statewide. Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 39 year old Ashley O'Malley of Bovina, following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident on September 18th, in Bovina Center. Deputies found that the vehicle had gone off the side of the road and came to rest overturned on a resident’s property. O'Malley appeared to be in an intoxicated state, she was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, with a BAC of 0.18% or more, Moving from Lane Unsafely and Speed not Reasonable and Prudent, O'Malley was released on appearance tickets to the Bovina Town Court at a later date.

Archer was indicted by a Grand Jury on 12 counts related to sexual abuse against 3 victims were less than 13 years old between 2013 and 2019 in the Village of Sidney, Archer will be sentenced to 13.5 years in state prison and 30 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender after prison & he is prohibited from contacting his victims.
