Chuck Schumer announced that $238,083 in federal funding will go to the
Addiction Center of Broome County in Binghamton to combat opioid abuse and
addiction.  The Senators announced that
the funding comes from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy
and it will be used to evaluate community efforts to address and combat the
opioid epidemic.

US Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten
Gillibrand reported that they were told by the Defense Department that $160
million in funding allocated for an engineering center and supporting
structures at West Point would be repurposed for the Border Wall between Texas
& Mexico.   Gillibrand stated aid
that Trump is taking money from West Point and 126 other military installation
projects across the country in order to work around Congress and build the southern
border wall.

The Broome County Sherriff’s
Office is warning people about a new phone scam where people posing as law
enforcement.  Victims are receiving calls
from a caller claiming to be a deputy & that the victim missed a jury duty
assignment and needs to complete paperwork and pay a fine to avoid being
arrested.  The caller requests the victim
to meet in the parking lot of the Sherriff’s office and wait there to pay the
fine.  The Sherriff’s department does not
collect fines and official transactions are processed inside their office.  Anyone who has received this call should
report it to 778-1191, extension 1.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is dropping out of the
presidential race, after she failed to make the cut for the next Democratic
candidate’s debate next month in Houston. Gillibrand announced her decision on
Twitter also after low poll numbers and difficulty in raising funds.  Gillibrand was appointed to the Senate in
2009 to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, after she had served this
region in the U.S House of Representatives.

Gillibrand announced over $172 million dollars in federal funding from the
Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Community Development
Block Grant & in the HOME Investment Partnership Program.   Communities will use the funding to address
a wide range of needs and enable local governments to support affordable
housing initiative, provide essential services, and expand economic
development. Locally, the city of Binghamton will get over $1.9 Million.

committee for a run for the Presidency.
Gillibrand made the announcement last week on the “Late Show with
Stephen Colbert", she has since opened up a campaign office in Troy, she
has more than $10.5 million left over from her 2018 re-election campaign that
she can use toward a presidential run.

While Governor Cuomo once again shot down stories that he
might run from President in 2020, speculation has shifted to a possible run
from President by US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.  Before becoming a US Senator, Gillibrand
represented much of the WCDO listening area in the House of Representatives
after winning the election in 2006 over Republican incumbent John Sweeney, she
later became a US Senator after Hillary Clinton was chosen as Secretary of
State by then President Obama.
Gillibrand told reporters last month that she would start considering a
run after the holidays.
