The National Weather Service has an Air Quality Alert in effect, due to lingering Canadian Wildfires, local Meteorologist Rich Townsend explains:

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 9-count indictment against 24 year old Donovan Connelly of Walton, for 6 counts of Sexual Abuse, for the alleged sexual abuse of a 17 year female co-worker while working in a position of authority. Other counts charge Connelly with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, 2 counts of Stalking. Connelly was issued a criminal order of protection, which he violated, which led to a charge of Criminal Contempt. The investigation is continuing, anyone with additional information should contact the Walton Police Department at 607-865-5400.
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration announced an Airport Improvement Grant for the Eaton Airport in Norwich. The grant was for just over $1 Million Dollars and will be used to re-seal & resurface the runway, the grant money will fund about 95% of the project.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has completed a study of the $277 billion Enacted Budget for the current State Fiscal Year, which has an increase of 7% from the previous State Budget. DiNapoli's report stated the largest increases in spending have been in Medicaid and School Aid, other potential issues are the the retrenchment of federal support; persistent inflation and increasing local government fiscal needs, also the state took action to preserve healthcare coverage for over a million New Yorkers, but that still resulted in 450,000 New Yorkers losing eligibility. The state has significantly increased its reserve levels at approximately $15 billion.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 38 year old Jennifer Hewitt, who is wanted on a Bench Warrant issued by the Town of Davenport Court, Hewitt was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury on charges of 3rd-degree Grand Larceny recently, following an investigation into a fraud complaint where Hewitt unlawfully issued bad checks totaling more than $14,000 and withdrew the funds without having sufficient balances in her accounts. Anyone with information pertaining to Hewitt's location should call the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office at (607)832-5555 or “Submit a Tip” at their Sheriff’s APP.

The State DEC and State Department of Health are issuing an Air Quality Health Advisory for fine particulate for today, for the region due to the impact of smoke from wildfires in Canada. In addition, there is the potential for visible smoke and hazy skies across the state and New Yorkers may see temporary spikes in smoke-related pollution. The advisory will be in effect until 11:59 pm. More information is available at airnow.gov
State Police arrested 3 people following a traffic stop in Broome County. Troopers were patrolling Johnson City & observed a vehicle commit Traffic Law violations. Troopers conducted a traffic stop on Prospect Street in the town of Dickinson. The operator was identified as 51 year old Gregory Jackson of Brooklyn. The passengers were 60 year old Sircurtis King of Binghamton & 38 year old Jhenna Wood of Binghamton. Troopers with the assistance of a State Police K9, located cocaine, fentanyl, a digital scale, packaging materials and a large amount of cash. Jackson, King and Wood were each charged with 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2 counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia and all 3 were processed and were transported to the Broome County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
The City of Oneonta announced that a contractor working for Firstlight Fiber will be installing new underground fiber cable on Ford Avenue between the intersection of Main St. and the Community Bank driveway entrance, starting at 7:00 AM until the Work is completed. The road will be closed to one lane of traffic with flaggers and temporary no parking will be implemented for both sides of the roadway throughout construction. Delaware County Sheriff's Office Deputies arrested 52-year-old Stephen Kiss of Davenport, after Deputies received a complaint from a male party on August 8th, reporting that his landlord had attempted to unlawfully evict him from his current residence in the Town of Davenport. Deputies determined that Kiss unlawfully attempted to evict the renter by means of discontinuing essential services, on 2 occasions Kiss had turned off the electricity and the water to the residence. Kiss was charged with 2 counts of Unlawful Eviction, he was processed and released on an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.
The State Department of Health advised New Yorkers that nearly half of all overdose deaths in the state involve fentanyl. New York issued a statewide pharmacy standing order for naloxone beginning earlier this month, to counteract the effects of an opioid overdose, Fentanyl is 50-100 times stronger than heroin and is a major factor in the increase in opioid deaths over recent years.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27 year old David Showers of Port Dickinson, for allegedly slashing the tires of a family member's car & threatening the same family member with the knife. Showers allegedly disposed of the knife prior to being taken into custody, He was charged with Criminal Mischief, Menacing, Concealing Physical Evidence, he was taken to the Broome County correctional facility for processing.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 47 year old Gregory Jackson of the Bronx, was sentenced to 3 years in prison along with 2 years of post-release supervision after he plead guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Police executed a search Warrant on Jackson's vehicle, they recovered cocaine and fentanyl
An American Red Cross Blood drive will be held in Sidney today from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Sidney Elks Lodge, 104 River Street. Donors can schedule an appointment to give using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Today is Primary Day in New York State, for those who want to decide on a candidate to represent their political party in the November elections. In Delaware County, The Democratic Party will hold Primaries for Town of Middletown Supervisor between Patrick Davis & Marjorie Miller. The Republican Party will hold a Primary for the Harpersfield Town Supervisors position between current Delaware County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jim Eisel and Edward Pick & In the Town of Walton for Town Supervisor, the race is between Charles Gregory & Bruce Dolph. In Chenango County, primary races of interest include the republican primary for District Attorney between incumbent Joe McBride and Zachary Wentworth. In the city of Norwich, there is a Republican Primary for Mayor between Incumbent Joe Mauirano & Christine Carnrike.

Investigators charged 47-year-old Michael Spencer, 39-year-old Toni Spencer and 18-year-old Bradley Jackson with Criminal Possession of Marihuana & Unlicensed Cultivation of Cannabis, for allegedly growing and possessing more than 16 ounces of marihuana. All three were arraigned in the Town of Walton Court and were remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.

Deputies stopped a vehicle just off of State Hwy 12 in the Town of North Norwich, Shannon Hunter was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, the driver, William Miller was found to be in possession of Hydrocodone pills and drug paraphernalia. Hunter was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Miller was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, both were arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $5,000 cash bail.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a late August hit and run accident that has resulted in the closure of the Corbett Bridge spanning the East Branch of the Delaware River in the Town of Colchester. A DOT supervisor discovered recent structural damage to the bridge located at the intersection of Corbett Road and New York State Route 30, a Subsequent inspection by engineers determined that the structural integrity of the bridge was compromised as a result of the accident and the bridge was immediately closed to all traffic. Officials anticipate the bridge will remain closed for an extended period of time for appropriate repairs, they believe the structure was struck by a large vehicle, anyone with information should contact Deputy Christopher Erwin at 287-4756.
