16-year-old Children's Home Residential Treatment Facility resident was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff's Office for 3rd degree Menacing.  The youth was arrested following an altercation at the Children's Home Residential Treatment Facility in the Town of Greene; he is accused of shoving, striking and attempting to choke a 13 -year-old youth. The Defendant was arraigned in the Town of Coventry Court & was released back to Treatment Facility staff and ordered to appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.

The Upstate New York economy remains sluggish according to a Sienna poll.  Consumer’s overall sentiment was up nearly three points across the state to 76.2, below national averages. Upstate, the figure was lower at 71.1.   Nearly 60 percent of consumers expressed serious concerns about gas prices, and 66 percent had similar concerns about the price of groceries.


Allowing 4 casinos in upstate New York would generate $430 million in annual revenue for the state, according to an estimate from the state budget office. The estimate marks the first time the Cuomo administration has put a dollar amount on the impact of the Upstate New York Gaming and Economic Development Act, which would allow for four casinos to be sited in the Catskills, Southern Tier and the Capital Region. The casinos, however, are contingent on whether voters approve a change to the state constitution in November.


The Sidney Central School Alumni Association will hold their 11th Annual Alumni Sports Hall of Fame “Induction Weekend” this weekend.  Induction Weekend begins with individuals and Legacy teams being honored at half time of the Sidney versus Seton Catholic football game tonight at Sidney Alumni Field. The Class of 2013 and Legacy Award recipients will be honored during the annual Induction Dinner and Ceremony Saturday at the Sidney American Legion at 5:00 pm. State Troopers in Sidney arrested 52 year old Mark Meyers of Guilford, for fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, felony driving while intoxicated with a BAC of .15%, plus numerous  vehicle and traffic law charges.  The arrest followed a traffic stop on State Route 8 that concluded on High Bridge Road in Guilford. Meyers was arraigned in the town of Guilford court and remanded to the Chenango county jail on $8,000 bail.


The Sidney American Legion Post# 183 is sponsoring a tribute & fundraiser for the Sidney Fire Department, on Saturday September 28th, at 2:00 PM.  Legion spokesman Larry Halbert explains.

State Police arrested 33-year-old Eleanor Black of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for 20 felonies.  Black was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny, 7 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, 6 counts of Falsifying Business Records, and 6 counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing.  The charges followed a yearlong investigation of crimes in the Schoharie Valley Region.  Black was arraigned and will return to Town of Esperance Court at a later date.


The Binghamton Mets Released their 2014 Schedule.  The B-Mets set a team record with 86 victories in 2013, sending them into the eastern league playoffs for the first time in 7 seasons.  The 23rd season at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton begins on April 3rd against the Akron Aeros. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly will work together to ensure that funding will continue for newborns to be tested for over 40 fatal diseases. The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2013 assures federal funding so newborns can receive a blood test for fatal diseases that, if caught early, can be diagnosed and treated early. If the bill is not reauthorized by Sept. 30 the federal funding for newborn screenings could end. Kelly’s son Hunter died in 2005 from a fatal genetic disease that, if caught early, can be treated.


The Emerald Ash Borer is spreading more quickly than expected, according to Cornell Cooperative Extension in Chenango County.  The Emerald Ash Borer will only affect Ash trees, which make up about 10 percent of trees in the region. Officials say the only way to protect the trees is to inject the tree with insecticide. Any trees without the insecticide will begin to weaken and die over the next decade. Binghamton University hosted a workshop yesterday regarding funding for small businesses, hosted by the university's Small Business Development Center. Guest speakers talked about the availability of funding so businesses can expand their businesses and commercialize products. State Police investigated a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 81 in the Town of Lisle at around 8:00 PM Monday.  Police found the vehicle engulfed in flames,  the operator was 56 year old CLARENCE PHELPS of Watertown, who pulled over & unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the fire.  30 horses in the trailer died, the preliminary investigation indicates that the fire started after a passenger side fuel tank malfunctioned.


The 2nd annual canoe parade on the Saturday of this year’s general Clinton canoe regatta will be dedicated & named in honor of Pam LaFever this year, LaFever chaired the Clinton canoe regatta for 6 years.  Todd & Trevor Lafever commented about the honor for their mother:

The Lafever brothers will participate in the Pam Lafever Memorial canoe parade, their mother died in December of last year after a lengthy illness.


Governor Cuomo today announced $91 million in awards for shovel-ready projects to build affordable housing across the state. The funds were available through New York State Homes & Community Renewal,  Locally, in this round of funding, Lakewood Development LLC receives $3 million for The Norwich Shoe Apartments; which calls for the demolition of 4 old buildings and the new construction of 34 rental units for low-income individuals and families, 7, for persons with developmental disabilities. The development will be located adjacent to the downtown Norwich Business District.


Residents of the Sidney center fire district are urged to attend a public meeting at 7:00 PM tonight about the construction of a new fire station.  A vote on the bond will be held on Tuesday may 21st from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Sidney Center FIRE HALL.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a 17 year old Delhi youth for Criminal Possession of Stolen property.   The youth was spotted by Deputies riding a stolen dirt bike, he was also arrested for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, driving an Unregistered, Uninsured ATV and riding without a helmet.  The youth was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.

A group of Pee Wee Wrestlers from the Bainbridge, Guilford & Afton school districts made their way to the championships at Ocean City Maryland this past weekend.  Andy Carr coached the local wrestlers, who ranged in age from 9 to 14:

The Northeast Classic Car Museum will present its new exhibit, “Wagons & Woodies: From Depot Hack to Station Wagon.” With 20 classic vehicles on display.  The exhibit will run through April 2014, & the Museum will also show the documentary “Wagonmasters”, which  will play in the “Wagons & Woodies” exhibit from May 18 through Labor Day.
