The State Comptroller's Office conducted an audit of the State Department of Health, they found that the Department was unprepared to respond to infectious disease outbreaks at nursing homes, even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York. A lack of funding for public health forced the Department to operate without critical information systems and staff that could have identified and helped limit the spread of COVID-19 at nursing homes, also the department did not provide the public with accurate COVID-19 death counts and became entangled in the undercounting of those deaths as Governor Cuomo took control of information provided to the public. The Auditors believe that the actual number of nursing home residents who died is still uncertain.

Schmidt said that proof of vaccination & masks are required for tonight's concert at the Foothills Performing Arts center on Market Street in Oneonta.


Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies observed a vehicle traveling on Main Street in Delhi last Friday with a non-functional headlight. Deputies stopped the vehicle, the driver was identified as 19-year-old Skylar Pesout of Sidney Center, Deputies charged him with DWI and driving with blood alcohol content of .14%. Pesout was also issued Traffics Tickets & was released on an appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town of Delhi Court on a later date to answer the charges.

Norwich City Police officers conducted a traffic stop on Mitchell Street Friday Morning, the driver left the vehicle & ran, & was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. Norwich police charged 23 year old Dylan Keenan of Bridgewater for criminal possession of a controlled substance, obstruction of governmental administration and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, plus Keenan was wanted on several outstanding warrants from different police agencies. Police confiscated methamphetamines packaged for sale, Keenan was processed & was was released on an appearance ticket, but was turned over to State Police for additional processing on the warrants.


The New York State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for January 2022. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.4% in December 2021 to 5.3% in January 2022. Delaware & Chenango Counties reported at 4% Unemployment, Otsego had 4.1% unemployment in January.


Jake Cotten was elected as Unadilla’s new village mayor over challenger Christopher Price in village elections Tuesday, by a vote of 117 to 82. Democrat Paul Baldwin and Republican Joseph Paliotta won trustee seats on the Unadilla Village Board. In Otego, Democrat David Clapper & Republican James Salisbury were elected to the village board.


The State DEC announced that the annual brush burning ban begins in New York State today, the ban runs through May 14 this year, more information is available at dec.ny.gov.

Village Elections are being held across the state today. In Unadilla, 2 men are running for Mayor, Jason Cotten & Christopher Price are seeking the seat, incumbent Jack Insinga declined to seek re-election, also in Unadilla 4 people are seeking 2 seats on the village baord, Republicans Joseph Paliotta & Eric Harkins, and Democrats Paul Baldwin & Dwight Mott are the candidates. In Otego, Republicans James Salisbury & Joseph Stanton are seeking Re-election to the village board, while Democrat David Clapper Jr. is also in the race. Polls are open from Noon until 9:00 PM today.


State Senator Peter Oberacker voted "NO" on the State Senate budget resolution in Albany for fiscal year 2022-23, which was adopted Monday, Oberacker explained his no vote:

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies stopped a vehicle on State Highway 10 last Tuesday in the Town of Delhi with an expired vehicle inspection sticker. 29-year-old Christina Hood of Delhi had her driving privileges suspended for Failure to Answer a Summons in the Town of Delhi Court, and the vehicle she was operating had a suspended registration. Hood was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle & Operating with a Suspended Registration, unlicensed operator and uninspected motor vehicle. Hood was released on Traffic Tickets, to appear in the Town of Delhi at a later time.


The City of Norwich Police Department & New York State Parole performed a home check Friday morning at 6 Lee Avenue in Norwich. Police discovered Methamphetamines, suboxone & an illegal rifle, Norwich officers arrested 34 year old Michael Pierce and 30 year old Jordann Maroney for criminal possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child, Pierce was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Pierce and Maroney were arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.


Delaware County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched February 15th to a Harassment Complaint in the Town of Meredith. 48-year old Zacharias Fuller of Richfield Springs had electronically communicated with the victim and made threats to harm the victim. Deputies submitted a request for a criminal summons and an order of protection to Town of Meredith Court, which was issued. Deputies learned that Fuller was being held on unrelated charges at the Otsego County Correctional Facility, he was charged with Aggravated Harassment & he remained incarcerated in Otsego County, and will appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 32 year old Richard Hildebrandt of Mastic Beach for Driving While Impaired by Drugs. Troopers were dispatched to the parking lot of Mountain Side Residential Care, they located Hildebrandt, he failed Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, further investigation revealed that numerous unlocked vehicles were rummaged through in the Margaretville area prior to Hildebrandt’s arrest. Many of the stolen items were located in Hildebrandt’s vehicle. Hildebrant was additionally charged with Grand Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Petit Larceny, & Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree. He is scheduled to appear in the Middletown Town Court on April 14th.

New York City DEP is repairing a leak in their Delaware water supply system which will require the Delaware Aqueduct to be shut down for approximately 5-8 months beginning in October. Governor Cuomo announced a Friday deadline for school districts that have not submitted plans for in-person learning yet. Currently, 107 school districts have not submitted a plan for the fall, last Friday Governor Cuomo said that all school district should be able to re-open in September, but they must submit plans to be approved by the Health Department & the State Education Department.  Local schools that did not submit a plan include:   Cooperstown, Richfield Springs & Worcester in Otsego County, and Andes & Margaretville in Delaware County.


Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 357 in Franklin Sunday evening, 51 year old Ronald Roof of Franklin was charged with Felony DWI, & aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle among many other charges.   Deputies      & EMS crews were dispatched to a report of a vehicle over an embankment, on State Highway 357 in the Town of Franklin, the operator of the vehicle had fled from the scene on foot.   Deputies located  Roof, the

investigation revealed that his driving privilege was revoked from a prior alcohol related offense and for failure to answer to summonses.  Roof was released & is scheduled to reappear in the Franklin Town Court on a later date.


Driving with a broken windshield and a suspended license resulted in a Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arresting a Delhi man last Wednesday evening and charging him with Driving While ability impaired by drugs and felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.  Deputies observed a vehicle being operated on Phoebe Lane in the Village of Delhi with a broken windshield, they stopped the vehicle, which was driven by 30-year-old John Regazzi of Delhi, who was accused of driving while

impaired, along with several other lesser charges.   Regazzi was processed and released and was directed to appear in the Delhi Town Court at a later date.


The Susquehanna SPCA announced that they have met & surpassed a dollar-for-dollar matching challenge in support of its SHELTER US Campaign. So far they have raised over $123,000, bringing the shelter $223,000 closer to the project's roughly $5 million price tag.  In celebration of the milestone, the shelter is giving back to the community with reduced adoption fees through this Friday, August 14th.


The State Health Department announced 476 positive COVID 19 cases Sunday, or .88% of those tested.  The total number of cases so far is 421,336, the total number of deaths is 25,204.  Hospitalizations, Intubations & the number of patients in ICU beds continues to decline.


Chenango County Public Health announced that over the weekend, they increased their total of COVID 19 cases by 4 to 216.  They report 130 current quarantines, 195 recoveries, 7 deaths , 1 person is hospitalized, and they have conducted just over 18,000 tests.


Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood will hold their next race tonight with the 56th running of the Heath Memorial.  The grandstand will be closed to spectators per current NYS Covid-19 Guidelines. The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce is hosting our very first "Drive Thru Job Fair!" this Thursday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon in the parking lot of Damaschke Field.  25 local area employers will participate,  Job Seekers will just drive in, follow the signs and traffic flow and remain in the car with your face mask on as you drive to each employer.  There is no fee to job seekers.


Area Chambers of Commerce & Local Governments are urging people to complete the 2020 Census as soon as possible.  The Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year and helps to keep taxes lower, the census can be found online at 2020census.gov.

State Police responded Friday to a reported of a shooting at 1205 Conklin Road in the town of Conklin.  Troopers immediately located two female victims in the parking lot.   38 year old Alison Salisbury of Binghamton was shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  42 year old Shannon Brooks of Conklin was shot in the hand and transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center where she was treated and released.  State Police arrested 45 year old Lance Johnson of Binghamton man for 2nd degree Murder & 2nd degree Attempted Murder, & is being held in the Broome County Jail without bail.


Governor Cuomo gave an update on the state's progress in lowering the number of COVID 19 cases statewide.  On Sunday, the number of ICU Patients Dropped to 131, a New Low since March 16, .78% of those tested was COVID-19 Positive; the Lowest One-Day Percentage Reported Positive since Pandemic Began, there were 7 COVID-19 Deaths Saturday, Total hospitalizations were at 548.  The 515 Additional Cases gives the state 420,860."


Delaware County Public Health received no new positive test results for COVID-19 Friday and 1 additional recovery, which brings the number of active cases to 0. To date there have been 96 confirmed positive cases, with 14 people now under mandatory quarantine.  6 people have died and 90 have fully recovered.
