It’s Day 6 of the new state fiscal year, and area lawmakers have had a chance to look over the specific details of the new state budget. Area Assemblyman Cliff Crouch told WCDO News that area school districts received more funding and less of a negative effect from the Gap Elimination Adjustment:

Crouch said that by next years budget, the Gap Elimination Adjustment should be completely wiped off the books, it devastated upstate schools over the previous 5 years.
Delaware County Sheriff's deputies arrested Daniel Quakenbush of Meredith Friday following a domestic incident. Deputies charged Quackenbush with Aggravated Harassment, and Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned in the Town of Meredith Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $3000 cash bail or $6000 Bond pending future court action.
Governor Cuomo today encouraged New Yorkers to help fight obesity during this year’s 20th anniversary of National Public Health Week, which begins today. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the nation, has also reached epidemic levels in New York State. the state Department of Health will be providing health tips through social media under the hash tag #GetFitNYS, more information is available at health.ny.gov. In New York State, 25.4% of adults are obese and another 35.9% are overweight, 32% of the states school aged children are also obese or overweight.
The Bainbridge-Guilford Central School will hold a SPECIAL Board of Education Meeting tonight in the District Conference Room at 6:30 PM. The board will move into executive session until 7:00 PM. The 2015-16 Spending plan will be discussed.
The national tour of ANYTHING GOES, the new Broadway revival of Cole Porter’s musical, will stop in Binghamton on April 26 for 2 shows. State Police and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control have concluded their preliminary investigation of the fatal house fire on Hone Road in the Town of Cherry Valley. The victims have been identified as 13-year-old Anthony Sabler, 20-year-old Gabrielle Sabler, & 22-year-old Ashley Tefft, all 3 deaths were ruled accidental, caused by asphyxia due to the inhalation of smoke and heated combustible material. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
A Binghamton residence at 101 Main Street went up in flames Friday night. The fire started in the kitchen, all residents made it out safely, the top floor of the residence sustained heavy damage, and Binghamton firefighters battled the blaze until about 3:30 AM Saturday.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has lifted a ban on some state-funded travel to Indiana. Controversy recently arose over new Indiana and Arkansas measures that barred state and local governments from impinging on people's ability to follow their religious beliefs, with some limitations. Supporters said the laws would protect religious liberties. But critics said they could be used to discriminate against gays. The Republican governors of both states signed changed versions of the laws Thursday, hoping to quiet the outcry. The Indiana version specifies it can't be used to discriminate.
About 1600 Vestal area residents were without power this morning after a Motor Vehicle accident on state route 26 near Bunn Hill Road. An unidentified woman was injured when she hit a utility pole at about 11:00 PM Sunday, the crash then brought down a 2nd utility pole. NYSEG Crews expected to have all power restored this morning.
The 11th annual American Cancer Society Tri-Town Relay For Life will be held at the General Clinton Park on Saturday May 9th this year. The 2015 theme is Hero’s of Hope & this year’s event will be ONE day only, running from 11am to 11pm. Officials announced that it is not too late to become involved by either registering a team or volunteering, more information is available at relayforlife.org/tritownny or at the next meeting tonight at 5:30 at the United Methodist Church, Liberty Street in Sidney.

State Police & the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and Otsego County Emergency Management Team, are investigating a fatal residential fire that occurred at approximately 3:45 AM at 165 Hone Road in the Town of Cherry Valley, Thursday. 3 deceased subjects were located in the residence. Positive identification of the deceased subjects is pending autopsies and further investigation. Cherry Valley and Sharon Springs Fire Departments responded to the scene.
A single engine plane crashed into a farm field in South Kortright Thursday afternoon. Julian & Kerry Joffe of Vermont were the only occupants, both were uninjured the crash is under investigation
The Binghamton Mets baseball team is officially for sale, but a variety of twists & turns & a lawsuit encompass the future sale. Team President Michael Urda acknowledged that they are shopping the franchise, but they vow to keep the team in Binghamton. A federal lawsuit filed this week claims that a handshake deal to sell the team to a Florida ownership group occurred on December 8th for 8.5 million dollars, but that B-Mets Owners backed out when another possible buyer appeared. The Florida group is now asking the court to halt the sale to another buyer. Urda & the B-Mets owners have denied the claims of the lawsuit, & they want to buy the B-Mets just to move them out of the area. Urda said that the main goal is to keep the team in Binghamton at all costs.
The Unadilla chamber of commerce has chosen Green's Long River Inn as the business of the Year, and Mike Knowlton as the "Good Neighbor" award winner. The Unadilla chamber dinner will be held on April 26th at the Unadilla Untied Methodist Church.
The Chenango County Child Advocacy Center & Maydole's have teamed up for an Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, to raise awareness for child abuse prevention month. Center Spokesperson Tracy Henne explains:

The Cancer Services Program of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie counties will offer free health screenings in partnership with the Bassett Cancer Institute’s mobile screening coach, Spokesperson Stephanie Thorne comments:

The health screenings will be available today from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Tri-Town Regional Hospital, on Pearl Street in Sidney. Appointments are requested at 1-888-345-0225.
Delaware County sheriff’s deputies arrested Krista Hess of Stamford for resisting arrest, for intentionally preventing probation officers from arresting Jesse Papas. Deputies said that Hess's action allowed Papas to escape into the woods for several miles; he was tracked down in Schoharie County. Hess was released on an appearance ticket & will appear in Stamford court at a later date.
The Chenango County Sheriffs Department arrested Michael Mason of Green for Menacing and Harassment, following an investigation of a domestic dispute. Mason was arraigned and was released in his own recognizance pending future court action.
The New York state department of taxation & finance is extending their call center hours through April 15th. The call center will be open from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM Monday through Friday and 8:30- AM to 3:00PM on Saturdays; they can be reached at 518-457-5181.
Section 4 Athletics announced several Post-Season Basketball Awards this week for area coaches & players. BG Girls coach Bob Conway was named section 4 class c Girls coach of the year, for leading the Lady Bobcats to an 18-3 record & a spot in the Sectional finals. Conway's Senior leader Morgan Bullis was named to the Section 4 all-star team, for aver5agin a Double Double she was the only girl from the MAC Conference.
Letchworth State Park was voted best state park in a USA Today poll. The Park is located in the Rochester area, and is known as the Grand Canyon of the east", and receives about 650,000 visitors each year. A new state of the art nature center will be constructed this spring.

Broome County sheriff's department identified the deceased white male pulled from the Susquehanna River Monday as 21-year-old Ryan Bell of Groton. Bell was reported missing last year, his death is not considered suspicious but the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Broome County Sheriff's department at 778-2053.


Lawmakers passed anew state budget that spend 142 billion dollars, which includes ethics reforms, & stays within the 2% spending cap by spending less than last year. Area Assemblyman Pete Lopez said that lawmakers are proud of those facts, but not his the final product cam about:

The New state Budget also increases aid to school district by more than a billion dollars above Governor Cuomo's initial budget proposal.   The New York farm bureau applauded lawmakers for an on time budget that spends more than 70 million dollars on agricultural programs.


The Chenango county health department announced a spring schedule for rabies clinics. The first clinic will be held on Wednesday April 22nd at the Guilford highway garage from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, a complete list is available at co.chenango.ny.us.


The Chenango county School Counselors Association us sponsoring its annual "Spring College Day on April 7th from 10:45 AM to 2:00 PM at the Norwich YMCA. Representatives from 40 colleges & The Armed forces will be present.   The event is free & open to the public.


Governor Cuomo is restricting travel by state workers to Indiana following the controversy over that state’s new "Religious Freedom Restoration Act". Cuomo’s executive order directs all state government-related entities to review requests for state-funded travel to Indiana and ban non-essential travel by state workers to the state. Travel for law enforcement or health-related matters are exempt.


The Prosecution has rested in the 3rd murder trial of Cal Harris in Schoharie County Court this morning. The defense is scheduled to call more witnesses to the stand, including Cal & Michelle Harris's daughter Jenna. Cal Harris has been convicted twice before for the September 2001 Murder of his estranged wife Michelle, & was twice granted new trials on appeal. The current trial has lasted 8 weeks so far.


The Binghamton Senators have teamed up with Broome-Tioga Workforce New York to hold their first Annual Career Fair Wednesday, April 15, from 11a.m. until 3p.m. The first 500 people to present their resume at the Job Fair Information Table will receive a FREE TICKET to that night’s B-Sens game versus the Utica Comets at 7:05p.m.   This free event is open to the public and is a great opportunity for both individuals in the area looking for employment as well as for local businesses to attract potential employees. Participating local companies include: Maines, Willow Run Foods, Mirabito Energy Products, Lourdes Hospital, Workforce New York and many more.


Otsego County Conservation Association launched a new website as part of its strategy to enhance communications and enable better access to resources for both its members and the public. The New website is organized into six main sections of information, OCCA’s website also includes links to the organization's You Tube channel, where original and shared PowerPoint presentations and videos are organized by topic, and to the OCCA Facebook page.
