Area Congressman Josh Riley participated in a hearing of the Public Service Commission last week where he cross-examined NYSEG executives and demanded answers about why the utility monopoly is demanding Upstate New Yorkers pay higher bills while sending millions in profits to its foreign parent company. Riley has co-sponsored a bill to take on Utility Companies like NYSEG:

Riley said that NYSEG executives confirmed for the first time they authorized a $450 million dividend to Iberdrola; their parent corporation in Spain, they were already preparing to request a rate increase of more than $500 million, which would increase New Yorkers Monthly bills by about $35 dollars a month. The Public Service Commission is expected to rule on the NYSEG rate request shortly.

Mirabito Cares announce the launch of its March 2026 Round Up at the Register campaign, a month-long community giving initiative dedicated to improving access to pediatric healthcare for children and families across Mirabito’s service areas. From March 2 through March 31, customers at all 112 Mirabito Convenience Store locations will be invited to round up their in-store purchases to the nearest dollar. Proceeds from the campaign will benefit Friends of Bassett supporting School-Based Health Program and the Upstate Foundation supporting vital patient care, education and research at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

Vestal Police responded Wednesday to a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis in the area of 581 Sequoia Lane, officers encountered an individual who was in possession of a knife and threatening self-harm. During the course of the interaction, officers made numerous requests for the individual to drop the knife. The individual ignored commands and threw a television at officers & raised the knife and advanced toward an officer. Despite the continued de-escalation efforts, shots were fired and the individual was struck. The individual was transported to Wilson Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident. State Police will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstance surrounding the shooting. State Police announced that the individual was identified as 38 year old Eslam Ahmed Hegazy of Vestal, he has succumbed to his injuries.

Chenango County officials remind residents that public transportation from Cathay Express Transportation will begin Monday, March 9th. Cathay Express will offer a fare-free day on March 9th to allow everyone to experience the service and learn the routes, Regular fares for Individual passengers will be from 50 cents to $3.00 per ride and a monthly passenger pass will be between $20 to $40. Cathay will have 4 to 5 buses running each day, more information is posted at chenangocountyny.gov.

The United Way of Mid Rural New York announced that they raised over $590,000 in the 4 counties that they serve, about $30,000 dollars more than the previous years efforts, United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco told WCDO News of the breakdown for each county:

Monaco said that 53 projects will receive funds from the United way Fundraising efforts, some funds were also allocated to food pantries & warming stations in the region.

There are now 3 candidates running for the New York’s 51st State Senate seat, as incumbent Republican Peter Oberacker decided to run for Congress. The 3 candidates are Democrat Michelle Frazier of Delhi, Current Republican Assemblyman Chris Tague and Sullivan County Republican Terry Bernardo, The district covers Sullivan County, Delaware, Schoharie, and Otsego counties, along with parts of Broome, Chenango, and Ulster counties.

Dr. Joseph Tabone of Sidney passed away on February 12th, He moved to Sidney in 1967 where he continued his practice as a Chiropractor until his retirement in 2005. Visitation will be held at C. H. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Kyle Wedderspoon of Morris for Sex Offender Failure to Notify of Address Change within 10 days following a complaint received in Morris. Deputies were notified that Wedderspoon was no longer living at his registered address, he is a Level 1 Sex Offender, he had been living at a residence in the Town of Otego and failed to make proper notifications of his address change, he was taken into custody and processed at the Sheriff’s Office, he was released with an appearance ticket and is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 48 year old Luke Lupo of Walton man on charges of Promoting Prison Contraband, after they received a complaint from the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Lupo allegedly possessed contraband while incarcerated at the Delaware County Correctional Facility on pre-existing charges. Lupo was arraigned and was remanded back to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility on the charges that led to his initial incarceration.

Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire at 57 Maple Street Saturday morning, 1st floor residents and visitors were able to leave the house safely, the 2nd floor apartments were under construction, the 1st floor apartment suffered water damage from fire operations, The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Mutual aid was provided by Otego, West Oneonta and Franklin fire departments. no injuries were reported.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors has successfully negotiated with New York City to stop the acquisition of land in the County, Shelly Johnson Bennett of the Delaware County Planning Department told WCDO News why this is important to the County & The Watershed region:

Johnson Bennett said that scientifically based programs will allow for developing some land & still make sure that the water supply used by New York City will remain clean.

2 new laws went into effect in New York State over the weekend, that will impact how healthcare providers obtain consent to payment and collect payments from patients. Healthcare providers Must collect consent for payment separate from consent to receive healthcare services; & they are prohibited from requiring credit card pre-authorization or requiring a patient’s credit card be kept on file prior to the delivery of emergency or medically necessary services, & they Must notify patients of the risks of using credit cards to pay for healthcare services.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced over $27 Million Dollars in federal funding for the Delaware County Electric Cooperative, which provides electricity to over 5,000 families, farms, and local businesses in Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie Counties. The Delaware County Cooperative will lead a partnership composed of 6 small electric cooperatives across 3 states to increase grid resilience against outages caused by weather events and tree damage caused by invasive species. The Cooperative will deploy advanced software to enable proactive grid management, as well as hardware such as grid sensors and drones to provide real-time data and monitoring capabilities.

The Delaware County Board of Elections announced that the ballot drop box previously outside the Board of Elections Office at 97 Main Street in Delhi, has been removed. Officials stated that It was taken down by maintenance in response to a directive from the chair of the Board of Supervisors, Tina Mole, citing security issues and a contentious election. Anyone who received an absentee or early vote by mail ballot who prefers not to return it by mail can deliver it to the Board of Elections office during normal business hours, from 8:30AM to 4:00 PM, and during some extended hours during early voting being held at our Delhi Office, October 28 through November 3. Absentee/early mail ballots can also be delivered to any poll site on Election Day, November 5th.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Brian Worden of Sidney following an investigation into medications not being taken properly in the Otsego County Correctional Facility. Worden was charged with Attempted Promoting Prison Contraband when he failed to take his prescribed medication properly and attempted to remove the medication from the medication room but was caught by a Correctional Officer, he was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.

A new economic impact report finds that the annual GDP of New York State Parks and Historic Sites amounted to $3.7 billion in 2021, an impact that rivals the state's agricultural sector, which generated $3.3 billion during the same year. Park visitors generated $5.8 billion in sales, $2.5 billion in labor income, for every $1 million invested in parks results in $10 million in sales, $4 million in labor income, and $7 million in state GDP. Of the estimated 78 million visits in 2021, 47 million came from tourists not local to the area

23 year old Dakota Mann of Walton pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court Monday to 3rd degree Assault & Criminal Contempt. On May 17, 2024, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence in Walton for an ongoing domestic, where the caller & 1 other person claimed to have been assaulted by Mann, who violated an order of protection. Mann was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility. On July 1, 2024, while incarcerated, Mann assaulted & injured a fellow inmate, Mann was additionally charged with 2nd degree Assault. Mann faces sentencing on December 9th to 1 1/2 to 3 years in state prison for Criminal Contempt, and 1 year for Assault.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that 221 State and local government workers have been deployed to North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia to help with response and recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. Team members include staff from the National Guard, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Department of Transportation, DEC, State Police, Department of Agriculture and Markets, among many others. State Agencies are also gearing up deployment top Florida following the expected devastation from as Hurricane Milton heads towards Florida.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce announced that Drivers are able to reduce the cost of their auto insurance coverage by taking a Defensive Driving Course offered at the Chamber Business Center in Delhi on Tuesday, October 22 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the Meeting Room at 5 ½ Main Street in Delhi. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Richie Rodriguez of Bronx for Criminal Possession of Stimulant, Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and a host of traffic tickets following an investigation after a traffic stop on State Highway 7 in the Town of Otego. Rodriguez was processed and held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility pending Arraignment.

A man and a woman were arrested in an assault on former Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Friday Night in New York City. Paterson & Anthony Sliwa were treated for minor injuries, 2 adults, a 12 year old & a 13 year old were all charged with gang assault and assault.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol observed motorcycle without a license plate on I-81, a traffic Stop was initiated, the operator failed to comply onto Colesville Road to State Route 17, the motorcycle eventually had a mechanical failure and came to a stop. 29 year old Trae Salisbury of Binghamton had an unsecured dog on his lap throughout the pursuit, deputies secured the dog and placed Salisbury under arrest for Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Carrying an Animal in a Cruel Manner & Numerous traffic violations. Salisbury was processed at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Kirkwood Court. The dog was transported back to its owner.

The State Police are continuing the special enforcement initiative to crack down on impaired and reckless driving this holiday season. The enforcement campaign is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative and runs from Wednesday, December 13, 2023, through Monday, January 1, 2024. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints, Troopers will be watching for distracted drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and drivers violating the “Move Over Law,” State Police will also conduct underage drinker enforcement details statewide. During last year’s crackdown, State Police arrested 453 people for DWI and issued 32,934 tickets, including 11,305 tickets for speeding, 912 for distracted driving, and 316 for the “Move Over Law.”

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Keith Tompkins of Oxford for several counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 9 counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, after deputies observed a male, laying on the floor in the back of the vehicle, attempting to conceal himself by hiding under automotive parts. Tompkins had an active arrest warrant out of the Village of Oxford Court for Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer. Tompkins was in possession of over 2 ounces of crack cocaine, about 4 ounces of crystal Methamphetamine, 1,150 wax envelopes of Fentanyl, packaging material, digital scales, and over $2,000 in cash from suspected drug sales. Tompkins was arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail. Tompkins is to appear in Chenango County Court at a later date.

Bassett Healthcare Network and Helios Care are collaborating to provide hospice and palliative care to patients in Central New York. The State Department of Health has given approval for Helios Care to expand their services to include Herkimer and Chenango Counties to better serve within the Bassett Healthcare Network. Currently, Helios Care serves Otsego, Delaware, and Schoharie Counties.

Norwich Firefighters responded early Thursday Morning to 137 Horstman Lane for a reported structure fire in a mobile home, they located a fire in the ceiling and roof area of the structure. Crews quickly extinguished the fire containing it to the room of origin along with ensuring all occupants were clear of the structure. Firefighters from New Berlin & North Norwich also responded, the cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported & all occupants safely evacuated without injuries.

38 year old Mark Archer of Oneonta was indicted for 12 felonies and arraigned in Delaware County Court Wednesday for alleged sexual crimes against children. The Indictment accuses Archer of 3 counts of Sexual Abuse, 2 counts of 1st degree Rape, as well as Criminal Sexual Act & 4 counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child. Archer was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $75,000 cash bail, or $750,000 bond. The case is scheduled for a conference on October 30th.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 year old Bryce Barnhart of Cortland following a motor vehicle pursuit which began in the Town of Springfield and continued into Schoharie County on Tuesday. Barnhart was charged with Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer, Failure To Comply, Reckless Driving & Speeding & Speeding in a Construction Zone, he is accused of traveling up to 118 miles on U.S. Highway 20 in the Town of Springfield, & for hitting another vehicle while exiting a parking lot. Barhart was processed and released on an Appearance Tickets in both Counties at later dates.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 37 year old Sarah Stevens of Oneonta following an investigation of contraband found in the correctional facility. Stevens was charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Control Substance & 2 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, she was being held pending centralized arraignment.

The smoke has reached into the Carolina's as well as shifting to the West in Canada and in the US today, the Canadian government has not indicated when they will have the fires under control.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies initiated a traffic stop Wednesday on State Highway 10 in the Town of Hamden after observing a vehicle driving erratically, and passing multiple vehicles on the roadway. Deputies identified the driver as 26-year-old, Kyle Buckley, of Walton, Buckley’s driver’s license had been suspended for failure to answer a summons on 3 separate dates. Buckley was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator & improper passing, he was released on the traffic tickets and is directed to appear in the Town of Hamden Court at a later date to answer the said charges.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that her administration has reached contract agreements with the New York State Public Employees Federation and with the United University Professions. The agreement with PEF is for a three-year term running until April 1, 2026 for more than 51,000 New York State employees in a in a wide variety of professional, scientific and technical titles. The agreement with UUP is for a four-year term running until July 1, 2026 for more than 37,000 SUNY system faculty and professional employees. Both agreements are subject to ratification by union membership.

The largest statewide Special Olympics New York competition of the year is coming to Ithaca this weekend. More than 800 athletes and coaches from throughout New York will be in the area for State Summer Games, with competition in 7 sports: Basketball, Bowling, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Swimming, Tennis and Track & Field, with festivities beginning Friday at 7:00 PM, with the closing ceremonies Saturday night.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for Robert Schrauger on an outstanding warrant and asking the residents of Broome County for assistance, he is described as a white male, bald about 5'4" 150 pounds, he is wanted for a Sex Offender Registration violation and for failing to report to a parole officer. Jury Deliberations began yesterday & Continued today in the trial of Nauman Hussain in Schoharie County Supreme Court, this afternoon he was convicted of manslaughter in the Schoharie limo case that killed 20 in October 2018. Hussain was the owner of the Prestige Limousine, one of their vehicle crashed in Schoharie, killing 18 in the limo & 2 at a gas station that the vehicle crashed through when the brakes failed. Sentencing will be held at a later date.

Acting State Police Superintendent Steven Nigrelli commended and recognized 30 individuals for bravery & exceptional contributions in this year’s State Police Annual Awards Ceremony. Senior Investigator Jennifer Hahl & Senior Investigator Steven Hahl, both of Troop C, were sited for saving a disoriented elderly man from certain death due to exposure, they were on their way home when they observed a pair of discarded boots alongside a rural roadway, they entered a wooded area & discovered an elderly male lying on the ground soaking wet and hypothermic. Also, Trooper Timothy Murray & Trooper James Wamsley Jr. both of Troop C were awarded, Trooper Murray observed a crashed garbage truck, and he located an adult male pinned under the truck’s rear wheels. He radioed for help, Trooper Wamsley arrived on scene, and both Troopers shoveled to free the trapped victim.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 50 year old Hasan Taylor of Oneonta, following an investigation of narcotics within the Correctional Facility. Taylor is accused of concealing narcotics with the intent to sell, after being admitted to the Correctional facility on separate charges, he was released, however investigators received a report from the State Police indicating that the substance seized from Taylor was Fentanyl, an arrest warrant was issued by the Town of Middlefield Court. Taylor was located by the Oneonta Police & was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Promoting Prison Contraband & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, he was being held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for court action.

There has been a lot of confusion regarding New York State's rules on the gas stove to electric stove change over, and the expected timeline, Local Assemblyman Joe Angelino said that right now, the proposal has almost no effect on the region:

Assemblyman Angelino said that there may be some changes addressing mandates that school busses change over to electric battery power in the near future, but the manufacturing of the busses and the access to charging points will not ready in time for the mandate's expected start date.

Otsego County Board of Representatives Chairman David Bliss announced that Otsego County has declared a state of emergency, regarding the possible influx of immigrants transported to the Upstate Counties by New York City from southern states.

Terry DeCutler of Sidney & Nicholas DeCutler of Unadilla were sentenced in Otsego County Court, to 20 years to life in prison, for the murder of Kaleb O'Neill in Oneonta on Memorial Day last year. The DeCutler brothers both pleaded guilty to 2nd degree Murder, for the fatal stabbing of O'Neill in an alley near Dietz Street in downtown Oneonta.

In the new State Budget Plan, there is an Increase in the State excise tax on cigarettes and little cigars. Effective September 1st, the State excise tax on cigarettes will increase by $1.00 per pack of 20 cigarettes. Also, effective September 1, 2023, the New York State excise tax on little cigars will increase by $1.00 per pack of 20 little cigars. More information is available at tax.ny.gov.

New York City area codes 332, 347 & 646 have a high percentage of scam calls, Local law enforcement agencies remind the public to never give out personal financial information to a phone call that you did not initiate, and do not call back numbers from potential scammers who leave a voicemail.

Opening statements began in Schoharie County Court Monday, in the trial of Nauman Hussain. Hussain is the owner of Prestige Limousine, he is charged with criminally negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the 2018 crash in Schoharie that killed 17 passengers, the driver and 2 people in a gas staion in Schoharie, where the vehicle's safety is in question.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to reports of a vehicle in the Chenango River Friday off of I-88 near Exit 3. The updated report stated that 21 year old Colby Degnan went off the highway into the Chenango River, he & passenger Colleen Bobola escaped the vehicle as it started floating down the river & was sinking, Bobola was able to make it to shore, the currents swept Degnan further down the Chenango River. Deputy Mark Hamilton tied a rescue line around his waist before jumping into the river, Hamilton brought Degnan back to shore, but he was unresponsive, CPR was performed, Degnan was transported to Wilson Hospital where he remains in critical condition, Bobola was taken to Wilson Hospital for minor injuries and released. The Broome County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the accident.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Johnnie Hardwick of Binghamton pleaded guilty to Attempted Robbery, in Broome County Court. Hardwick admitted that on October 21st 2022, he entered Weis Markets on Pennsylvania Avenue in Binghamton and stole merchandise, when confronted by a store employee Hardwick pulled out a large knife threatening the worker. Hardwick was apprehended by the Binghamton Police Department a short time later. Hardwick had a lengthy criminal record, including for Sexual Abuse in 2011 and Attempted Robbery in 2002 in New York City, he will face 12 years to life in New York State prison on April 26th,

The Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will host a Community Cat Forum Thursday, beginning at 4:00 PM at the Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center, 24 Market St., Oneonta. Susquehanna SPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes told WCDO News that the event is to address the issues of Feral cats in large numbers in many area communities & how to deal with the issue:

Local government sales tax collections in New York state totaled $22.1 billion in calendar year 2022, up 12.7%, or $2.5 billion, from 2021 due to strong sales statewide, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Every county saw some year-over-year growth in sales tax collections in 2022, Yates County had the strongest growth at 21.1%, followed by the counties of Lewis (14.9%), Montgomery (12.4%) and Schoharie (11.8%). Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Anthony Ward of Oneonta following a traffic stop in the Town of Otego on January 30. Ward was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle for allegedly operating a motor vehicle on a public highway with a suspended driver’s license, he was ordered to appear in Town of Otego Court at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 19 year old Jason Hoffman of Brooklyn, for Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and No Tail Lamps, following a traffic stop in the Town of Oneonta on January 30th. Hoffman is accused of operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license, he was ordered to appear in Town of Oneonta Court at a later date.

Otsego County Department of Health & the CDC recommends that everyone who is not fully vaccinated to contact their Health Care Provder & complete the polio vaccination series as soon as possible, especially children. In Otsego County, only 80.4% of 2 year olds are recorded as having the recommended doses of polio vaccine, locally, Delaware County has a vaccination rate of 89.4%, and Schoharie County 88.8%. So far, 8 polio cases are being investigated in Rockland, Sullivan and Orange Counties.

The 7th Annual Binghamton Porchfest returns this Sunday, from 12:00 noon to 7:00 PM. Porchfest invites thousands of community members each summer for a free afternoon of live music performed from the residential porches, stoops, this year 165 local and regional bands and 59 host locations will participate. Food vendors and restroom locations will be set up and a free shuttle service is available throughout Binghamton's West End neighborhood.

The State Office of Cannabis Management announced that the State has begun accepting applications for the first adult-use cannabis retail dispensary licenses. The 1st legal retail dispensaries will be operated by those most impacted by the enforcement of the prohibition of cannabis, and those first sales will be made with products grown by New York farmers. New York’s recreational cannabis market is expected to reach $4.2 billion by 2027 and to create up to 60,000 jobs.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted provisions of her federal gun trafficking bill that were included in the bipartisan gun safety framework. The new laws give Legal Protection for Abortion Service Providers, Prohibits Misconduct Charges Against Healthcare Practitioners for Providing Services to Patients from other States, & Prohibits Medical Malpractice Insurance Companies from Taking Action Against a Reproductive Healthcare Provider.

State Police have arrested 7 people linked to a crime spree across 4 local counties.  In July, State Police arrested Christopher Youngs of the town of Maryland & John Clark of Morris in connection with multiple burglaries in Otsego, Delaware, Chenango and Madison counties.  State Police Investigators have lodged additional charges against Youngs and Clark, & they have also arrested 32 year old Joseph Santiago of Burlington Flats, 32 year old Charles Hall of Edmeston, 23 year old Kayla Van Pelt of Edmeston, 59 year old Henry Schmidt of Garratsville, 56 year old Samuel Madero of Morris, All 7 have been linked to over 40 cases between the State Police, local Sheriff’s departments and local police departments.  More charges are likely as investigators continue to work through the open cases.

Hartwick College President Margaret Drugovich announced her Plans to Retire Sometime next summer.  Drugovich has led Hartwick College for 13 years, she received national news coverage for her program for an accelerated 3 Year Degree program; plus the development of 6 new undergraduate majors, a graduate-level program in Translational Biomedical Research Management, and soon, its Master of Science in Nursing Education and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Nursing Education and the development of Hartwick’s Center for Craft Food & Beverage program. The College’s Board of Trustees has initiated a formal search to choose Hartwick’s 11th president.

Otsego County businesses and residents affected by severe storms and flooding on July 16 to the 19th may apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration; the declaration includes Otsego County and the adjacent counties of Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Montgomery and Schoharie Counties. State Police arrested 22 year old Jessica Winans of Unadilla for the felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle as well as Driving While Intoxicated, following an accident on September 6th.  Troopers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle that struck a tree on Plankenhorn Road in the town of Sidney.  Winans was the only person in the vehicle, she was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City for the treatment of injuries to the face & ankle, and she was issued appearance tickets to the Sidney Town Court on September 23rd.

On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed legislation that would allow National Guard members to qualify as veterans under New York State law. Governor Hochul has also issued a Citation honoring members of the New York National Guard for their service during and after the events 9/11.  Over 6,700 New York State National Guard members were called to serve in response to and recovery from the attack on September 11th 2001.

The State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that State Route 51 will be closed just north of Walters Road in the Town of New Lisbon, today through October 4th, for a culvert replacement.  Motorists should follow posted detours utilizing County Routes 12, 14 and 16. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Public Health and Health Planning Council passed an emergency regulation and the Health Commissioner issued a determination requiring all teachers, administrators and other school employees to submit to weekly COVID-19 testing unless they show proof of vaccination, with either a CDC vaccine card or the Excelsior Pass.   The Governor also announced that the State Department of Health has finalized and released official guidance for classroom instruction regarding Facemasks, which closely echoes the CDC guidance which districts were advised to follow. The operator of Prestige Limousine, 31 year old Nauman Hussain, has pleaded guilty to 20 counts of negligent homicide in connection with the fatal Limo crash in Schoharie in 2018.   Hussain will be placed on interim probation for 2 years, will serve 1,000 hours of community service, he will not serve jail time & he was ordered to pay an undisclosed amount of money in restitution to the families of the deceased.  The October 6th, 2018, crash killed 18 people in the limo including the driver, plus 2 pedestrian in the parking lot of the Apple Barrel Convenience store at State Routes 30 and 30A in Schoharie.

Delaware County Public Health reported 63 new cases of COVID 19 in the last week, with 84 active cases, 6 Hospitalized and 122 quarantined.  Delaware County has had 2742 total cases, with 2606 recoveries & 52 deaths during the pandemic.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation extending virtual access to public meetings under the State's Open Meetings Law, which allows New Yorkers to virtually participate in local government meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic, as long as the public has the ability to view or listen to the meeting and as long as the meeting is recorded and later transcribed. This change will reduce the need for congregation at public meetings while the Delta variant is prevalent, while ensuring public business can continue.

State Police responded to a crash between a motorcycle and vehicle on Conklin Road/ State Route 7 in the town of Conklin. The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased on scene, he has been identified as 21 year old Tristan Thor of Vestal. The investigation indicates that 44 year old Seth Delvillano of Binghamton was traveling north on Conklin Road when he crossed over into the southbound lane and struck the motorcycle head-on, the investigation is on-going.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 33 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, the highest number of cases reported since March. There have been 2 deaths this week from COVID-19. The County reported 93 active cases, with 4 hospitalized, the Delta variant is suspected in more than 95% of the current cases. Otsego County remains at a HIGH level of community transmission, the CDC & Otsego County Department of Health recommend everyone wear a mask indoors in public. Delaware County Public Health announced that they had 54 new cases of COVID 19 in the last week, with 65 active cases, 4 hospitalized, 117 quarantined, they have had 2679 positive cases with 52 deaths since the pandemic began.

Delaware County's Board of Elections has received funding from a grant to change their system thanks. The Board is planning to create more access with a new early voting site at an undetermined location & they are working on securing a Technology Innovation and Election Resource Grant to purchase an absentee ballot scanner and additional software.

Nationwide Opioid overdose deaths were a record 93,000 last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase of more than 19,000 from 2019 or 29%.  Lockdowns and pandemic restrictions made treatment programs difficult to access in 2020, which likely contributed to the deaths.  New York State has had about 3000 overdose deaths annually since 2018.

SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras is encouraging students to get vaccinated ahead of the fall semester through a 30-day challenge he issued this week.  Malatras announced that students would need to be vaccinated to return to campus, with vaccines that have FDA approval.   SUNY Schools are looking to return everyone to dorms & classrooms in the 2021-22 school year, after a year of large numbers of infections on SUNY campuses, and remote learnings throughout the system.

Village of Sidney Police Department arrested 23 year old Donovan Teague of Sidney, Wednesday following an investigation into a stolen bicycle.  Teague is accused of possessing small amounts of heroin and methamphetamine & was charged with Criminal mischief, Criminal possession of stolen property & 2 counts of Criminal possession of a controlled substance, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & was released on his own recognizance, Teague was on parole, he was turned over to State Parole officers, who then remanded him to the Delaware County Jail.

Republican Kyle Van De Water has decided to run against Congressman Antonio Delgado again, after losing to him in 2020, when Delgado won with 54% of the vote, to Van De Water 42%.  The 19th Congressional District currently includes all of Delaware & Otsego Counties, as well as Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties & a part of Broome County, but it could look substantially different after redistricting based on the 2020 census.

NYSEG reported about 310 customers were still without power this afternoon in Broome & Chenango Counties, after last night's storm, crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

New Yorkers enrolled in SNAP will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for July. The agency is also working with the federal government to ensure this aid, which has brought in more than $2.5 billion in food assistance to New Yorkers since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, will continue beyond July.  Nearly 1.6 million households in New York State will receive the supplemental benefits later this month, which will result in the state receiving roughly $200 million in federal assistance.

Chenango County Public Health announced that their next COVID vaccination clinic will be today at Seeber’s Tavern in Smithville Flats from 3:00 to 6:00pm, a 1st dose Pfizer clinic for 12 years and older clinic will be held tomorrow at the former Label Shopper Store, in the South Plaza in Norwich from 4:00 to 6:00pm, More information is available at 337-1660.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation expanding New York State's definition of telemarketing to include marketing by text message. New Yorkers have protection against unwanted robocalls under state law, but texting was not previously defined as telemarketing, this legislation closes that loophole.

NYSEG crews continue to work to try to restore power to thousands of customers in the Southern Tier, following last nights storms that knocked down trees & power lines. Over 10,000 were without power in Broome County this afternoon, about 190 were without power in Delaware County, over 100 in Chenango County had power outages this afternoon, power has been fully restored in Otsego County.

State Police in Troop C are continuing with their crackdown on drunk & drugged drivers throughout the region. Troopers removed 46 impaired drivers from local roadways in the month of June, Troop C encompasses Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins Counties.

The annual NBT Bank Summer Concert Series begins Tonight at 7:00 PM. Blues musician Ana Popovic & her band will perform tonight, Tonight's show has been moved to the Norwich High School auditorium, due to rain in the forecast.

19th District Congressman Antonio Delgado has secured federal funding for road projects in Otsego and Schoharie Counties through the recently passed “INVEST in America Act”. State Police announced that following a multi-agency investigation spanning two years, 78 people involved in 2 Central New York drug rings have been indicted on more than 355 criminal charges. Attorney General Letitia James announced the indictment in Syracuse Wednesday, she said that more than $2 million in drugs, including cocaine & heroin mixed with fentanyl, plus 15 guns and $490,000 in cash were seized. The investigation was a join effort by the AG’s Organized Crime Task Force, the drug task forces in Oneida and Madison counties, and more than a dozen other agencies.

The State Health Department tested over 217,000 New Yorkers Wednesday, with over 6900 positive tests.  Patient Hospitalization increased to 3, 056,  the number of patients in ICU beds is up to 628 & the Number on Ventilators is up to 286, there were 67 deaths from the virus, the Total number of Deaths is 26,549.  The state has conducted 18.7 million tests since March.

Delaware County Public Health reported 11 new cases of COVID 19 Wednesday & 4 more on Thursday, bringing their total to 339 since March.  They reported 56 active cases, 4 are hospitalized, 230 are in quarantine, and there have been 274 recoveries & 9 deaths.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 13 new COVID 19 cases Wednesday, they have had 1249 total confirmed cases, 113 active cases, 6 are hospitalized, there have been 8 deaths, and 764 cases are linked to SUNY Oneonta & 73 cases are linked to Hartwick College.

The Broome County Health Department added another 103 positive COVID 19 cases since Friday, giving them 3883 since March, they had 1 more death, giving them 106 since the virus hit.  They have had 3460 recoveries and 4048 are being monitored by the Health Department.  Their Yellow Zone positivity rate in the Southern part of the County is down to just over 3%.

The Sidney Central School District has been notified that someone has tested positive for COVID-19, the affected person has not been on campus since Thursday, October 29th. The Local Department of Health has already conducted an investigation and has notified any and all people who may have potentially been exposed. There will be no change to the instructional model as a result of the positive case. The potential exposure has been minimized because of the emphasis placed on wearing face coverings and social distancing.

NYSEG reminds customers that enrollment for New York’s Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as "HEAP" is now open. Otsego County Department of Health reports 7 cases of COVID 19 over the weekend, they have had 1060 total confirmed cases, 38 active cases, and 0 hospitalized & 8 deaths.   755 cases are linked to SUNY Oneonta & 62 confirmed cases in Hartwick College students

State Police arrested 49 year old Timothy Young of Oneonta for Criminal Possession of Marijuana and Driving While Intoxicated, Obstructing Governmental Administration and Reckless Driving. Troopers observed Young exit the parking garage ramp on Market Street in the city of Oneonta and make several vehicle and traffic violations.  Troopers initially made a vehicle and traffic stop in the Clinton Plaza where Young stopped but then drove off toward Chestnut Street and into a parking garage.  Young was taken into custody, Young was allegedly in possession of 5 pounds of marijuana, and his B.A.C was .14%.  Young was processed and was remanded to the Otsego County Jail.

The American Hockey Board of Governors announced that they have moved the anticipated start date of the next season on February 5th 2021, due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic.  Further details about the next season will be announced at a later date.

28 organizations were awarded grants totaling $454,200 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York. Broome County Health Department announced another 4 deaths from COVID 19 Thursday, bringing their total to 98, they have had 3522 cases since March, with 2825 recoveries, and almost 5200 people are being monitored.

Hartwick College reported two new cases of COVID-19 have been detected. There are 15 active cases on campus; the total number of cases detected on campus since August 1, 2020 is 36.

Governor Cuomo announced that the state tested over 110,000 New Yorkers Sunday, with 1,222 positive tests, or 1.1%. The state has had over 464,000 positive tests for COVID 19 since March, Hospitalizations were steady at 618, there were 14 deaths from COVID 19 Sunday statewide, and the state death toll is 25,519.

Broome County Health Department announced that they had another 29 positive cases of COVID 19, giving them 180 since Friday. They report 1863 cases since March, they have had 82 deaths, 1368 recoveries & the Health Department is monitoring 1700 people. Due to the high rate of infections of COVID 19 in Broome County, both UHS and Lourdes will not allow visitors into their facilities starting Tuesday. The restriction affect the hospital's primary care and specialty care locations and outpatient surgery locations, there are exception for end-of-life patient situations & Pediatric patients.

State Police responded to a report of a structure fire with an entrapment at a residence on Jones Road in the town of Otsego, early Sunday morning. 39-year-old male, 32-year-old female and 3 children were able to escape the residence unharmed, but the male returned to the residence to assist a 77-year-old male out of the home, the 77-year-old male was transported to Bassett Hospital where he later died. Many area Fire Departments responded, the cause of the fire is under investigation, no foul play is suspected.

State Police and the Department of Transportation continue to work together targeting reckless and distracted drivers in active work zones with “Operation Hardhat”. Last Thursday, 2 work zones on I-81 in Broome County were targeted, during the initiative, 33 tickets were issued, 10 for Speeding, 9 for Cell Phone Use, 6 for not wearing a Seatbelt & 8 more for a variety of infractions. As of mid-September, over 1,600 tickets have been issued throughout New York; the initiative began in July and continues through construction season through the month of November.

Local Congressmen Antonio Delgado & Anthony Brindisi announced a $255,000 grant award from the Appalachian Regional Commission for the DCMO BOCES. The funding will help expand the Career Destinations – Connecting Students to Local Jobs and Careers program to 14 middle and high schools in Delaware, Otsego, and Chenango counties.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of Caleb Casteline of Apalachin for the fatal stabbing of Q-Quan Richardson of Binghamton, at a party in Endwell Wednesday.  Casteline was charged with 2nd degree murder and faces court action on the charge shortly.

State Police responded to a report of a tractor trailer rollover north of the Pennsylvania state line on I-81 at about 11:45 AM Wednesday.  A trooper responded & discovered that the tractor trailer struck the guide rail, continued off the roadway and overturned.  The driver was a 57-year-old male from Quebec who declined hospital treatment, the investigation is ongoing.

State Troopers were dispatched by Broome County 911 to a one-car crash near the intersection of Fox Farm and Reagan Roads in the town of Windsor Wednesday morning.  Troopers discovered that the vehicle went off the roadway and struck a utility pole, the driver was still in the vehicle and unresponsive.  The unidentified driver was pronounced deceased at the scene and an autopsy was ordered.

Former State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver started his prison sentence Wednesday at a federal prison in Otisville, where he will serve 6 1/2 years following a corruption conviction.  Silver left the Assembly in 2015, was convicted a short time later & various appeals & a retrial kept him out of prison.    Silver was convicted twice for administering political favors, as a new inmate, Silver will be tested for COVID-19 and placed in quarantine for 14 days.

The National Transportation Safety Board released documents this week regarding the Prestige Limousine crash in Schoharie on October 6th 2018.  The Board’s Investigators said that The ownership of Prestige Limo took great pain to register the vehicle in a many to avoid safety regulation & twice a year required inspections.  The vehicles brakes failed approaching a t intersection, it crashed into a gas station, killing 2 people in the parking lot & all 18 in the limo.   Nauman Hussain faces 20 charges each for manslaughter & criminally negligent homicide as the operator of Prestige Limousine.

The Otsego County District Attorney’s office announced that Nicolas Meridy of Oneonta has pleaded guilty in a plea bargain arrangement & will serve 22 years to life.  Meridy was arrested along with several others following the murder of Kenneth Robinson in Worcester & the arson fire at Robinson house after the fatal shooting, in October of last year.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a New York City man Tuesday following a property damage accident on County Highway 26 in the Town of Colchester.  23-year-old Evian Camacho of New York City had a suspended driver’s license, for failure to answer summonses in both Bronx and New York counties and for failure to pay a State DMV driver responsibility assessment.    Camacho was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and moving from a lane unsafely.  Camacho was released and directed to appear in the Town of Colchester Court on a later date.

Otsego County Department of Health is investigating 9 cases of coronavirus reported Wednesday, 5 of the cases are SUNY Oneonta students. The other 4 cases have been associated with a gathering of high school students. All cases are have been investigated and contacts are being notified.  Currently, Otsego County now reports 128 total confirmed cases, with 15 active cases, 1 person is hospitalized.  The Otsego County Health Department is holding another free COVID 19 testing this morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NOON at the former "Greenies" site on state route 7 in Otego, This testing site is for Otsego County residents only who preregister by calling 547-4279.

Delaware County Public Health received 1 positive lab report for COVID-19 Wednesday, giving them 102 total cases since March.  Currently, 3 patients are recovering at home, 93 have recovered, 6 have died, and 29 are under Mandatory Quarantine.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a 22 year-old Q-Quan of Binghamton, following an investigation into an altercation early Wednesday Morning.  Quan was taken to Lourdes and later Wilson hospital with stab wounds, he apparently was stabbed at a large gathering in the town of Union, The suspect fled the area, and anyone with information should call the Sheriff’s Office at 778-1196.

The Broome County Sheriff's department arrested 25 year old Keenan Johnson of the town of Chenango twice Tuesday.  Johnson reportedly had a dispute with his girlfriend, he was confronted by neighbors & displayed a handgun, he fled the scene, was located by deputies & was charged with Menacing and Criminal Possession of Marijuana before being released on an appearance ticket, he was arrested a short time after his release at the girlfriends residence, fled on a Motorcycle the chase was terminated due to public safety concerns.  Additional charges against Johnson are pending.

Governor Cuomo announced today that travelers from Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Maryland and Montana will no longer have to self-quarantine for 14 days when arriving in New York.  The U.S. territory of Guam was added to the states quarantine list, the full list can be found at coronavirus.health.ny.gov.

The Federal EPA is planning to complete the clean-up of the GCL Tie & Treating plant in Sidney that closed over 26 years ago, and was included on the Federal Superfund site in 1994.  The plant was contaminated by creosote, which was used to treat railroad ties, the owners abandoned the business & the creosote contaminated groundwater.  The EPA will hold an online public meeting September 3rd at 7 PM at Eventbrite.com.

Attorney General Letitia James today announced an $85 million multistate settlement with American Honda Motor Company over allegations that Honda concealed safety failures in the airbags of certain Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the United States. State Police arrested 48 year old Robert Gregory of Oneonta for 3 counts of Forcible Touching, 3 counts of Sexual Abuse and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  An investigation was opened when the parents of two victims under the age of 17 contacted State Police, an investigation revealed that Gregory allegedly made inappropriate sexual comments and forcibly touched the intimate parts of 2 under aged victims. Gregory was virtually arraigned and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $500 cash bail or $1,000 bond.  The judge issued orders of protections to each of the victims.

Governor Cuomo issued an executive order that requires county boards of elections to be ready for the changes in voting in the November elections.  The executive order requires county boards of elections to Send a mailing outlining all deadlines for voters by Tuesday, September 8, Send staffing plans and needs to the State Board of Elections by September 20th so they can assist them in ensuring adequate coverage, make sure that boards are ready to count votes and reconcile affidavit and absentee ballots by 48 hours after elections & Provide an option for New Yorkers to vote absentee in village, town and special district elections.

State Police responded to a 2-car fatal crash on State Highway 8 in the town of New Berlin Tuesday afternoon at about 2:45 PM.  Troopers said that a vehicle traveling northbound operated by 31 year old Kerri Bunnelle of Little Falls, crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic and struck a vehicle head-on driven by 43 year old Mathew Fredericks of Herkimer, who was pronounced dead at the scene.  Bunnelle was transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. The investigation is on-going.

Governor Cuomo announced Tuesday's results regarding the ongoing COVID 19 Pandemic. There were 636 new positive cases yesterday, or .87% of those tested statewide, bringing the state wide total to 418,225.  There were 4 COVID-19 Deaths, bringing the toll since March to 25,179.    Patient Hospitalizations were down to 564, the number of ICU patients was down to 134, there were 69 patients on Ventilators.

Chenango County released their latest COVID 19 statistics today, with 1 new positive, giving them 212 cases since March.  Chenango County has 136 people in Quarantine, 1 person is hospitalization, and there have been 189 Recoveries, 7 deaths, & 17,275 tests Performed.

Governor Cuomo announced that State Police and local law enforcement will be increasing patrols over the next week to crack down on speeding across the state. Unsafe speed was a contributing factor in 34% of all fatal crashes from January to May this year, compared to 30% of fatal crashes during the same period in 2019, The "Speed Awareness Week" enforcement campaign is part of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee's ongoing efforts to improve safety on New York roadways.

Governor Cuomo said that New York's Decent from the highest infection rate to the lowest of all 50 states, stems from the use of masks, and social distancing, the he feels the President needs to sign an executive order mandating face masks:

Governor Cuomo said that there were 391 new coronavirus cases diagnosed Sunday across the state, .84% off all tested were positive, bringing the state total to 392,930.  There were 7 deaths Sunday, the state death toll is 24,842, and the number of people hospitalized is down to 853.

The Cancer Services Program mobile screening coach will be at the Unadilla Bishop Lot on Thursday, July 30, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM to provide no cost mammograms and Pap tests to women 40 or older.  Colorectal cancer screening kits are also available for men and women 50 or older and can be sent by mail.  More information or appointments can be made at 1-888-345-0225.

Chenango County Public Health announced that they are up to 146 total Coronavirus cases since March.  33 people are currently quarantined, there are no Hospitalizations there have been 6 deaths, and 10,641 tests have been performed.

The Broome County Health Department is up to 674 Coronavirus cases Monday, there have been 553 recoveries, 51 deaths, 244 are being monitored by the Health Department, and they have conducted 19,285 tests.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited and volunteered at the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, also known as "CHOW" in Binghamton this morning, where she helped pack meals for New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet during the coronavirus pandemic. The CHOW Program provides food to the hungry in Broome County through its network of over 100 partner agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, and community meal programs.

The State Department of Transportation will host a virtual public hearing by videoconference with a phone-in option for the upcoming bridge replacement project in the Towns of Fenton and Barker in Broome County; and the Town of Greene in Chenango County.  The Hearing will be held Tuesday, at 5:00 pm at dot.ny.gov/NY79ChenangoRiverBridge

The State DEC announced that additional DEC campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill parks will open on July 1 to existing reservation holders for the 2020 season. To maintain social distancing and reduce the density of facilities and protect visitors, DEC is not accepting additional reservations or walk-in camping for the 2020 season at this time. Delaware County Public Health received no positive lab reports for COVID-19 Friday.  They report 82 total Positive tests, 75 have recovered, 1 is recovering at home, no one is hospitalized, 6 have died, and 16 are quarantined.

Governor
Cuomo announced that New York has had its 1st Coronavirus positive test
results.  The positive came from a New
York City Woman in her late 30's, who contracted the virus while traveling
abroad in Iran, she is currently isolated in her home with respiratory symptoms,
but is not in serious condition and has been in a controlled situation since
arriving to New York. The Governor asked for the Legislature to pass a $40
million emergency management authorization to confront the evolving situation

Delaware
County Sheriff Deputies received a complaint from the State Child Abuse Hotline
registry regarding alleged physical abuse to an 11 year old child.   Deputies arrested 55 year-old Yvette
Rivera-Wood of Sidney for Endangering the Welfare of Child, for allegedly
striking a child & causing injuries. Rivera-Wood was released on an
Appearance Ticket and is to appear in the Town of Sidney Court at a later date.

Delaware
County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested and charged 50-Year-Old Edmund Rajner of
Sidney Sunday for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, unlicensed operation of a
motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without an inspection certificate, as
well as failure to signal a turn.  Rajner
was released on traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Village of
Sidney Court on a later date.

Governor
Cuomo announced that the state will begin testing for the Corona Virus at their
own Wadsworth labs in Albany.  Previous
samples were sent to the CDC, but now the FDA Approved of testing in Albany.

State
Police are searching for 37-year-old Casie Weese of Glen Aubrey, who was last
seen leaving a party with her husband in Apalachin Sunday morning at
approximately 1:30 a.m. but their vehicle ended up getting a flat tire a short
distance away from the party.  Weese was
last seen walking east in Main Street in Apalachin and has not been seen since.
Weese is 5 foot 5 inches and weighs approximately 100 pounds.  She has brown hair and brown eyes and was
last seen wearing a black and white checkered jacket, jeans and black boots.

The State Department of Health is continuing to monitor the
status of the Corona Virus in New York State.

There are no positive cases yet in New York State for the
virus.  There have been 26 negative test results,
with one case pending, according to the Centers for Disease Control &
Prevention, and additional 40 million dollars will be made available to the
State Health Department in the event that a positive test result occurs in New
York State.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 call
for a burglary in progress on Seeley Wood Road in the Town of Walton.  Deputies were informed that 40 year old Ryan
Kite of Walton fled from the scene; Kite is accused of forcefully entering the
residence & allegedly stole prescription medication and choked a female
victim.  Deputies located Kite in Walton
Tuesday evening, he was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal
Mischief & Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, he was
arraigned & was released on his own recognizance pending his appearance in
the Town of Walton Court on a later date.

The Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich has committed
$25,000 toward a new emergency room and walk-in center at UHS Chenango Memorial
Hospital.  Parish leaders presented a
ceremonial check Tuesday to campaign leaders; it is the latest pledge in the Chenango
Memorial Hospital’s largest fundraising effort in 3 decades.  More information about the fundraiser &

Jury selection began Tuesday in
Otsego County court for the trial of Kimberly Steeley of East Worcester.  Steely is charged with Manslaughter for the
asphyxiation deaths of her 2 infants 2 weeks apart in June 2018.

Oneonta Police arrested 26 year old Thomas Miller of Oneonta
for 8 counts of Making Graffiti, & 5 counts of Criminal Mischief & 1
count of Criminal Mischief in the 3rd degree as a hate crime.  Miller is accused of painting an offensive
symbol on an Oneonta church, and graffiti on private property & businesses
in recent months, he was issued an appearance ticket for the City of Oneonta
Court at a later date.

The American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society have
teamed up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time,
ensuring loved ones have the strength and support to battle cancer.  A blood drive is being held today at the
Bainbridge High School from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

A State Budget Presentation will be held by Commissioner of
the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Major General Patrick
Murphy in Norwich today.  The presentation
will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Northeast Classic Car Museum, Rexford Street
in Norwich.

The Tobacco Free Communities of Delaware Otsego &
Schoharie Counties will hold an open house & ribbon cutting today in
Oneonta today.  The organization will
open their office at 155 Main Street in Oneonta in Suite C; the event will run
from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM & is open to the public.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary
local area unemployment rates for December 2019. Statewide, the rate remained
at 4%; Locally Delaware County had 4.8% unemployment, Chenango County 4.9% and
Otsego County 4.7% in December.

Catholic Charities of Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie
Counties is holding a fundraiser called "Keeping our community warm 1
brick at a time" for individuals who are struggling with rising heating
costs.  Individuals, groups, or
businesses can purchase a brick from Catholic Charities for $25; their name
will be placed on the brick which is used to build the fireplace displayed in
the agency's Main Street window in Oneonta.

Norwood Financial Corporation, the holding company for Wayne
Bank of Pennsylvania, and UpState New York Bancorp, announced the signing of a
merger agreement where Norwood will acquire UpState in a stock and cash
transaction. The combined company will have $1.7 billion in assets and 31
offices. Norwood will retain the brand names of Upstate’s two units, Bank of
the Finger Lakes and Bank of Cooperstown.

Local law Enforcement Agencies are again warning area
residents of the "Grandparent Scam", where a con artist calls or
emails the victim posing as a relative in distress or someone claiming to
represent the relative & requests for them to wire money for a fictitious
expense.  Law Enforcement agencies
suggests that Before sending funds, independently contact the relative the scam
artist is claiming to be, at a known phone number, to verify the details of the
story.  Also Scam artist’s payment method
of choice is the wire transfer; any urgent request to wire money should be
treated suspiciously. Consumers who have been victims of this scam should
immediately report it to local law enforcement; more information is available

Delaware County Sheriff’s
Deputies arrested 19 year old Trent Wade of Rochester for Aggravated Unlicensed
Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Improper
plates, Speed not Reasonable and Prudent, and Operating a Motor Vehicle without
Insurance. Wade was charged following a Motor Vehicle Accident on County
Highway 14 in the Town of Meredith. Wade is scheduled to appear before the Town
of Meredith Court at a later date.

The State DOT announced completion of a $1.1 million project
that replaced a culvert under Dilly Road in the Town of Colesville. The new
culvert ensures more efficient water flow underneath the road, reducing erosion
and enhancing safety for motorists traveling to and from nearby State Route 7.
The Town of Colesville assisted in the project and will maintain the new
pre-cast concrete box culvert.  The bulk
of construction took place last summer to comply with stream work restrictions
and minimize disruptions to school bus routes.

The National Transportation Safety Board has issued its
preliminary report regarding the Schoharie limousine crash on October 6th 2018
that killed 20 people.   The report
recommends more thorough inspections, a requirement that all limo passengers
wear a safety belt.   Limousine owner
Nauman Hussain was charged with 20 counts each of 2nd degree manslaughter and
criminally negligent homicide.

The New York State of Health announced that in more than 1/2
of New York's counties, the rate of uninsured New Yorkers declined according to
statistics released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
New York was 1 of only 3 states nationwide to see a decrease in its
uninsured population in 2018.  More

Otsego County Sherriff's Deputies responded Monday to a 3
vehicle accident in Milford.  45 year old
Timothy Mower of Ilion allegedly fell asleep at the wheel of his truck, &
hit 2 parked cars on Main Street in Milford.
Mower was ticketed for Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, failing
to keep right and operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device, due to
a previous DWI conviction.

Governor Cuomo today announced
that the utilization rate for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises on
state contracts increased to 29% during the 2018-2019 Fiscal Year, the highest
rate in the nation, which translates to more than $2.93 billion in state
contracts awarded to Minority & Women-Owned Business.

a special meeting this evening at 6:30 PM at the Village clerk's Office at 33
West Main Street.  The purpose of the
