The recent general Clinton canoe regatta could have been a lot more difficult for paddlers this year, if it were not for the efforts of area fire departments who responded to help out after high swift waters created problems.  Regatta Chairman John Harmon comments:

Harmon said that the area fire departments are expecting to participate on a permanent basis with future general Clinton canoe regattas.


Chenango county sheriff’s department Detectives arrested 56-year-old Robert Baker of Plymouth for 2 counts of endangering the Welfare of a Child.  A complaint was forwarded to the department from the New York State Child Abuse Hot Line, where Baker was accused of exposing himself to the children.  He was arraigned in the Town of Plymouth Court and remanded to the Chenango county jail $2500 cash bail.  The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending following the examination of evidence seized.


State Police arrested 26-year-old Tavish Braman of Greene for DWI, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief and multiple violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. The arrest resulted from of an aggressive driving incident on I-81 in Marathon.  Braman was arraigned in the Town of Willet Court and remanded to the Cortland County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail pending court action on June 19th.


The Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested 50-year-old Phillip Brown of Morris for DWI, driving with BAC .08 of alcohol, and failure to keep right.   Brown was arrested following a traffic stop for moving violations in the Town of Sherburne, where officers determined that Brown was operating the motor vehicle in an intoxicated state.   Brown will appear in the Town of Sherburne Court at a later date.


Assemblyman Cliff Crouch will be hosting a roundtable Education Summit on Thursday, June 27th at 6:00 pm at the Chenango Valley High School. The roundtable will feature a discussion with Chenango Valley School District Interim Superintendent David Gill, New York State Regent James Tallon, Southern Tier area teachers and parents on Annual Professional Performance Reviews, Common Core, state testing, and unfunded mandates.


Governor Cuomo announced a call for projects to be funded by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to assist local governments and non-profit organizations to rebuild damaged communities across the state. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42-year-old Rae Clarkson of McDonough for Petty Larceny and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.   Clarkson was charged following the report of shoplifting at an Oxford business; Clarkson is accused of stealing items from the store without paying for them while in the presence of a child under the age of 17.   Clarkson was issued appearance tickets and will appear in the Village of Oxford court at a later date.


The Afton Crimson Knights Girl’s Softball team made it to the state finals on Saturday, but fell short of winning the state championship.  Afton lost to Fort Ann 5-2, who finished the season at a perfect 25-0, Afton finished at 22-2.

Governor Cuomo warned New Yorkers to beware of tax collection letters that appear to be government notices, but are actually solicitations from private entities.  The deceptive notices are titled “state tax warrant notice” and “bank accounts and asset seizure pending.” When recipients call the toll-free number it is from a business claiming to be able to remove the debt for a fraction of the amount owed. Anyone who believes that they have been the victim of this type of scam should contact the New York State Department of Financial Services’ Consumer Help Line at 1-800-342-3736.


Governor Cuomo announced that 63 programs from 36 SUNY campuses will receive more than $12 million in funding over the next three years to support workforce development in high-need career fields of Engineering, Healthcare, Renewable-Clean Energy, Biomedical-Biotechnical, Agriculture-Agriculture Business, and Information Technology. Locally, Binghamton University will get $1.7 million dollars, BCC will get $191,301, SUNY Delhi will get $70,000, Morrisville State College will get $253,000.


Chenango County Hospice Camp 4 Seasons assists children with loss and grief, they will be held at the Norwich YMCA this summer.
