Referencing the recent suicides of designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer commented that federal funding of suicide prevention needs to be increased after years of stagnant growth. Schumer said that the 3 most successful suicide prevention programs are The Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention, The Suicide Prevention Lifeline & The GLS Suicide Prevention Resource Center; he said those 3 programs have received $50 million annually combined since 2013 without any increase.

The recent general Clinton canoe regatta could have been a lot more difficult for paddlers this year, if it were not for the efforts of area fire departments who responded to help out after high swift waters created problems.  Regatta Chairman John Harmon comments:

Harmon said that the area fire departments are expecting to participate on a permanent basis with future general Clinton canoe regattas.

Assemblyman Cliff Crouch will be hosting a roundtable Education Summit on Thursday, June 27th at 6:00 pm at the Chenango Valley High School. The roundtable will feature a discussion with Chenango Valley School District Interim Superintendent David Gill, New York State Regent James Tallon, Southern Tier area teachers and parents on Annual Professional Performance Reviews, Common Core, state testing, and unfunded mandates.

Governor Cuomo announced a call for projects to be funded by the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program to assist local governments and non-profit organizations to rebuild damaged communities across the state. The Afton Crimson Knights Girl’s Softball team made it to the state finals on Saturday, but fell short of winning the state championship.  Afton lost to Fort Ann 5-2, who finished the season at a perfect 25-0, Afton finished at 22-2.
