State Police arrested 26 year old Matthew Haigis of Deposit, Friday for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Contempt, Criminal Mischief and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing. Troopers responded to a report of a physical dispute at a residence on North Sanford Road in the town of Deposit, Haigis left the scene, the victim reported that Haigis broke into the residence, obstructed the victim’s breathing and broke a cellphone during an altercation, Haigis also violated an order of protection.   A trooper located Haigis operating a vehicle in Deposit, he was taken in custody, & he was transported to Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing.


State Police have charged 26 year old Shane Santiago of Otego for 2 counts of 2nd degree Manslaughter, in connection with a July 15th early morning accident that killed 2 area women.   The investigation revealed that Santiago was driving an SUV, when the vehicle went off of Otsego County Highway 13 in Pittsfield, causing the death of Cheyenn Aubry of Treadwell & Tehya Gonzalez of Bainbridge, Santiago suffered minor injuries, he was arrested Tuesday, he was arraigned virtually and remanded on $2,000 cash bail or $4,000 bond, the investigation into the crash continues.


Governor Cuomo announced that 87,776 COVID-19 tests were reported to New York State Tuesday, a new 1-day record high for tests in a single day. There were 700 new cases confirmed Tuesday, .88% of all those tested.  Currently there are 558 patients hospitalized for COVID 19, the number of ICU patients has dropped to 123, the number of Patients on Ventilators is at 62.  There were 7 deaths reported, bringing the state death toll to 25,218


Chenango County Public Health announced that they have had 218 total cases of COVID 19 since March, with 126 Active Quarantines, 1 Active Hospitalization, 196 Total Recoveries & 7 deaths, they have performed over 18,700 tests.


Oneonta City Officials announced that crews will install a new curb along the north side of Center Street from Yager Avenue to West Street, excluding the sections between Maple Street to Elm Street and Ivy Court to Central Avenue.  The work began today & is expected to be completed August 27th, depending on the weather.  More information is available by calling the Department of Public Service at 432-2100 or by email to dpsinfo@oneonta.ny.us.


State Police arrested 45 year old Jeremy Squires of Norwich Saturday for2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Contempt, 3rd degree Assault, Criminal Mischief & Endangering the Welfare of a Child.   Troopers were dispatched to a report of a physical domestic on County Highway 35 in the town of Guilford, Squires had already left the scene, and the victim reported that Squires broke into the home, struck the victim & prevented the victim from calling for help.  The victim was transported to Chenango County Memorial Hospital for treatment.  Troopers located Squires in the city of Norwich, and he was arrested, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

The Sidney Central School District will hold 3 informational meetings for parents in regard to the district’s reopening plan tomorrow at 9:00 AM, 12:00 Noon & 6:00 PM on  in the high school auditorium, Sidney Superintendent Eben Bullock comments:

The sessions will run no more than 45 minutes; a recording of the parent information session will also be posted on the school website & social media.  Reservations for the in person meetings are available at 561-7703, a face cover is required Social distancing guidelines will also be in place.  A survey available on the school website & social media starting Thursday as well, it will be the official survey for attending school in September and will be available through Tuesday, August 18.


Broome County Health Department announced their COVID 19 numbers Tuesday.  They are up to 1,086 positive test results, with 70 deaths, 909 recoveries & 579 people are being monitored by the Health Department.


Delaware County received 1 new positive test result for COVID-19 Tuesday however; no additional recoveries have been reported. There is 1 active case, who is recovering at home. To date there have been 97 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 11 people now under mandatory quarantine, 6 people have died and 90 have fully recovered.

Gabriel Truitt of Oneonta was sentenced to life in prison without parole in Otsego County Court this morning.  Truitt was convicted earlier this year on charges of 1st & 2nd degree murder plus arson, for setting a fire at Walling Avenue in Oneonta, former Oneonta Firefighter John Heller died in the fire while helping to evacuate people from the burning building.


David Thomas of Oneonta was sentenced to 8 years in prison today for attempted murder.  Thomas pleaded guilty to attempted murder earlier this year in connection with a domestic dispute on a woman where she suffered a neck injury; an order of protection was also filed for the victim.


Governor Cuomo announced that Hospitalizations from the Coronavirus Dropped to 765 on Thursday, the Lowest Daily Total since March 18th.  there were 776 new cases of the virus yesterday, about 1% of all of those tested, bringing the total number of cases since March up to 405,551.  10 COVID-19 Deaths were reported Thursday the number of ICU patients on ventilators was down to 98.


Chenango County Public Health announced their latest Coronavirus Numbers today, they have had a total of 178 confirmed cases, 131 are quarantined, no one is hospitalized, there have been 6 deaths, 149 recoveries and over 13,800 tests have been performed.


Governor Cuomo announced that all restaurants and bars statewide can only serve alcohol to seated patrons. Service must be provided at the table, not at the bar, to patrons who are socially distanced by six feet or separated by physical barriers. Patrons must also order food if they are ordering alcohol. Citizens who see violations can report complaints with photos to the State Liquor Authority at sla.ny.gov.


Employees at UHS Primary Care Norwich coordinated a food and personal care product drive at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and its outpatient office locations, in order to donate the items to the Catholic Charities Roots & Wings program.    Items such as diapers, formula and hygiene products were donated, 5 collection bins with over 80 items were donated & were distributed to those in need.

State Police identified the 2 women who died after a one-vehicle crash in the town of Pittsfield Wednesday as 21 year old Tehya Gonzalez of Bainbridge and 21 year old Cheyenn Aubry of Treadwell.  The driver is a 26-year-old male who is facing criminal charges; his name will be released after he is formally charged.   Police responded early Wednesday to a report of a vehicle that went off of County Route 13 in the town of Pittsfield.


State tax receipts in June were down $1.5 billion or 17.3% from the previous year, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.  Due to the shutdown from the pandemic, June tax receipts were $475 million below projections, with shortfalls in personal income, consumption and business taxes.  Unemployment Insurance payments in June totaled just under $13.5 billion, compared to $135.6 million a year earlier.  The report can be found at https://www.osc.state.ny.us/


Otsego County Department of Health announced 4 new cases with 2 people hospitalized, there have been 85 total confirmed cases, with 7 active cases, 73 have recovered, there have been 5 deaths, and 41 people are on quarantine & 35 individuals being monitored after travel from a state with high incidence of infection


The New York State Sheriff’s Association is presenting State legislators with 10 proposals to protect law enforcement and civilians in the area.  Sheriff's held press conferences throughout the state this week, they are seeking Increasing Resisting Arrest to a Class E felony, Making Failure to Retreat a Class D felony, Increasing the levels for assaulting a police officer by one degree, and making them crimes that require bail & Deem crimes against police officers as hate crimes.  They also are asking for May 15th to become a state holiday to honor police officers who have died in New York State.  The full list is available at nysheriffs.org.

State Police responded at about 12:15 today to a report of a vehicle that went off the roadway near the on County Route 13 in the town of Pittsfield.  2 passengers in the vehicle did not survive the crash; the driver of the vehicle was transported to Bassett Hospital for an evaluation.   The investigation is on-going.


State police released more information about the accident Monday night between a vehicle & a pedestrian near Fred’s Inn on State Route 12 in the town of Norwich.  77 year old Gary VanDusen of Norwich was walking his dog in an unlit area of State Route 12 when he & his dog were struck and killed by a vehicle driven by 45 year old Tony Williamson of Bainbridge.  The investigation is continuing.


State Police will be working in Work Zones along state highways this summer, making sure that Motorists are obeying the Move Over Laws & other laws during "Operation Hard Hat"  Trooper Aga Dembinska of Troop C in Sidney explains:

During last year's "Operation Hardhat" enforcement,  State Police issued 1,048 tickets across the state, including 493 speeding violations, 92 cell phone violations, 94 seatbelt, 72 move over violations among many other infractions.


The State Health Department announced that the number of Coronavirus cases Tuesday increased by 831  or about 1.3% of those tested, bringing the states total number of cases to 404,006.  831 people were hospitalized due to the virus, 94 were on ventilators, and there were 9 deaths, bringing the total since March to 25,003.


Chenango County Public Health announced Coronavirus numbers Wednesday.  They have had 171 positive cases, there are 114 Active Quarantines, no one is hospitalized, there have been 6 deaths, 149 Recoveries & over 13,500 tests have been conducted.

Today is the last day for the special enrollment for health insurance. New Yorkers without health insurance can apply for a health plan through the NY State of Health Plan Marketplace at nystateofhealth.ny.gov.

State Police observed a vehicle leaving the scene of a burglary on County Route 20 in the town of Edmeston and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.  The operator, 30 year old Jesse Souza of Oneonta failed to comply.  Souza led troopers on a pursuit through several Otsego County roads, the pursuit ended when Souza stuck the passenger side of an Otsego County Sheriff’s Department vehicle on Allen Road in the town of New Lisbon. Souza was taken into custody after a foot pursuit.  A passenger 20 year old Alexis Bowers of Norwich was also taken into custody.  Both were transported to Bassett Hospital for treatment and will be charged with Burglary, The Otsego County Deputy was treated at Bassett Hospital.  The investigation is on-going.


The Broome County Health Department reported another spike in Coronavirus cases Tuesday, reporting 811 total cases, 5 more deaths in recent days up to a total of 58; they have 624 recoveries & 486 people being monitored by the health department.


Delaware County Public Health received 1 positive lab report for COVID-19 Tuesday, giving them 84 Positive Results.  Officials report 76 recoveries, 2 patients isolating at Home: no Hospitalized, 6 are deceased & 30 Quarantined.


Property tax levy growth for local governments with fiscal years closing Dec. 31 will be capped at 1.56% for 2021, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. This figure affects tax cap calculations for all counties, towns, fire districts, 44 cities and 11 villages.   The tax cap limits annual tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2% with certain exceptions, including a provision that allows municipalities to override it.

be receiving the American Red Cross Real Heroes award later this year for his
action in November.

State Police arrested 19 year old
Lucian Decker of New Berlin for 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a
Child.   Troopers were dispatched to a
domestic dispute in the town of Pittsfield; Decker is accused of slapping &
kicking an infant & another victim that didn’t want to press charges.    Decker was arraigned; an order of
protection was issued for the victim.


Following the murder of Upstate
resident, 17-year-old Bianca Devins in Utica, and the dissemination of graphic
images, Congressman Anthony Brindisi convened a meeting of members of Congress
and Social Media representatives from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google,
Reddit, and Tumblr, regarding the companies content moderation policies.  22 Year old Brandon Clark posted pictures on
social media platforms of Devin's deceased body after he killed her in Utica
last July.


Governor Cuomo stood with
environmental leaders today to discuss the need to pass the $3 Billion Restore
Mother Nature Bond Act in the State Budget; he first mentioned the proposal in
the State of the State address in January:

If approved by the voters in
November, the Bond Act would fund environmental restoration projects across the
state to ensure New York is able to withstand the threat of more intense and
frequent storms fueled by climate change.


State Police arrested 2 juveniles,
ages 14 and 17 for Burglary and Grand Larceny.
Troopers were dispatched on February 5th to the 14-year-old’s residence
after the teen’s family reported that the juvenile had left home some time
overnight, possibly with a 17-year-old who was also reported missing.  Troopers discovered that a vehicle was
missing from the town of Morris & that the 14 and 17-year-old teens
allegedly stole it & drove to Lafayette to pick up another minor.  The teens were found in Cortland and taken
into custody.   The 17-year-old was
arraigned and released to Otsego County DSS.
The 14-year-old was issued a family court appearance ticket.


The Delaware County Sheriff's
Department has called a press conference for tomorrow morning in Sidney,
regarding the recent seizure of 20 dogs from a town of Franklin Property, the
dogs were used for illegal dog fighting, and more details will be released
Friday.


State Police announced that 23 year
old Christian Wilson of Endicott was arrested twice, on February 4th in
Cortland County & February 11th in Tioga County.   State Police arrested Wilson on the 4th for
Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Criminal Mischief after an
investigation of a man wearing only black plastic garbage bags entered a home
& left the area, he also allegedly wrecked a car nearby that was reported
stolen from Broome County.  On February
11th State Police arrested Wilson for Criminal Trespass for being at a property
in the town of Nichols where he did not belong. Wilson was released on an
appearance tickets both times.


Local State Senator Jen Metzger
announced yesterday that fellow Senate Majority Democrats are working to give
judges the ability to set bail on a number of charges, following multiple
problems around the state, after the passage of a controversial package of Bail
reforms.  There have been several
instances of someone being released on an appearance ticket for a serious
crime, and immediately committing another crime.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies
arrested 40 year old Mohamed Mursal of Minneapolis, Minnesota with one count of
Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, as well as traffic
violations for operating a motor vehicle with inadequate head lights and
operating a motor vehicle in excess of the allowed gross vehicle weight. The
arrest occurred as a result of an investigation into disabled Commercial
Vehicle on Rathbun Hill Road in the Town of Davenport. Mursal was arraigned at
the Town of Kortright court and was released on his own recognizance.  Mursal is scheduled to appear before the Town
of Davenport Court at a later date to answer the charges.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies
arrested 42 year old Daniel Berry of Woodbourne for Aggravated Unlicensed
Operation of a Motor Vehicle, as well Operating a motor vehicle without a
required Ignition Interlock Device, Unlicensed Operator, and Inadequate
headlights following a traffic stop on State Highway 28 in the Town of
Middletown. Berry was later released on ticket, and is scheduled to appear
before the Town of Middletown Court at a later date.
