State Police revealed today that the August 10th investigation of 2 deaths in Chenango Forks is consistent with a homicide and suicide.  The preliminary investigation determined that 38 year old Matthew Lott caused the death of 63 year old Scott Cleary, using a firearm.  Matthew Lott later caused his own death with a firearm a short distance from a residence on Parsons Road.

The State Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, upheld a law that registered voter can cast a ballot by mail, which rejected a Republican Party challenge to the legislation. The 6-1 ruling from the state Court of Appeals affirmed lower court rulings that the voting expansion law approved by the Legislature last year did not violate the state's constitution.

The State Department of Health & the State Education Department have issued an official determination that certifies pharmacists can administer vaccines against m pox. The Health Department stated that there is a new m pox variant circulating in Africa, which prompted the World Health Organization to declare a global health emergency. The State Division of Consumer Protection is providing tips to help older adults avoid financial scams and exploitation on National Senior Citizens Day, which happens to be today. The FBI’s Internet Crime Report estimates that the annual loss to victims aged 60 years and older in the United States is $3.4 billion dollars, the highest of any age group. On Tuesday, members of the Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management Unit conducted a Seat Belt Checkpoint on the Exit 6 on-ramp to Interstate 81 south just off Upper Front Street in Chenango. Troopers found 17 adults that weren’t wearing seat belts and one child that was not properly restrained. Each violator was ticketed. Troopers additionally issued 19 tickets for other vehicle and traffic violations. New York crash data indicates that approximately one third of all motor vehicle occupants killed on highways are unrestrained.

State Health Department Officials confirmed that a Long Island man in his 50's is the 1st confirmed case of the West Nile Virus in New York State this summer, the unidentified man was hospitalized briefly but has recovered and was released. 2 more cases were confirmed this week in Westchester County Health Department, West Nile is spread by mosquitoes, Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, joint pain, and minor bleeding. New York State had the most cases of the West Nile Virus in the nation is recently as 2022.

Governor Kathy Hochul today directed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to issue an emergency declaration to help communities in 18 counties rebuild critical infrastructure after severe storms and flash flooding that took place August 9-10, 2024. The declaration includes Broome, Chenango, & Delaware Counties.

Broome County Sheriff’s #1 Most Wanted fugitive was arrested last night following a traffic stop in Philadelphia. 27 year old Jeremy Lewis of Endicott, was wanted for possession of a handgun that was discovered during a domestic disturbance in Endicott on October 12, 2023. Lewis fled the area and law enforcement had initially been unable to locate him. The Broome County Sheriff’s Warrants Division had tracked Lewis to the Philadelphia area and alerted the local U.S. Marshal’s Regional Fugitive Task Force, Lewis was located during a routine traffic stop on Monday evening, Lewis will remain in custody in Philadelphia until he is extradited back to Broome County for arraignment.

Several area Fire Departments responded to a blaze at Birdsong Farms on State Route 10 in the town of Delhi early this morning. The fire was called in at about 3:40 AM, Firefighters from Delhi, Walton & Trout Creek responded, traffic was detoured for several hours off of State Route 10, the fire was under control late this morning, with fire companies dismissed from service, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The State Legislature continues their session in Albany, and Assemblyman Joe Angelino told WCDO News that he doesn't see any changes in the Bail Reform laws happening, even after a case on Long Island where 4 people were released after dismembering 2 bodies and scattered them over a wide area in public view:

Angelino said that New York is the ONLY state that doesn’t allow a Judge to decide the dangerousness of a defendant prior to release, he will continue to call for a review of Bail statutes.

New York’s Move Over Law will soon be expanded to include all vehicles. Starting March 27th, drivers will be required to take precautions, including slowing down and moving over, to avoid a crash with all vehicles stopped along the roadway. Previously, the law dictated moving over for emergency vehicles parked on the side of a highway, from 2016 to 2020, 37 individuals were killed outside disabled vehicles in New York, nationally, nearly 300 drivers are struck and killed roadside every year.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit affirmed the decision of the United States District Court, Northern District of New York to dismiss the case against Delaware County by former County Social Services Commissioner Dana Scuderi-Hunter, who unsuccessfully claimed that the County had violated her First Amendment rights; that she was denied due process as part of her 2019 dismissal; and The County’s actions were retaliatory as a result of her testimony during a Family Court proceeding.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the availability of additional home heating assistance to help low- and middle-income New Yorkers, as HEAP has extended the deadline for Regular and Emergency HEAP applications to April 12 and is now accepting applications for a second emergency benefit from eligible New Yorkers who have used up their regular and first emergency benefits. Applications for assistance are accepted at local departments of social services, older adults needing assistance with HEAP applications can contact their local office for the aging or call the NY Connects helpline at 1-800-342-9871.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that the Baseball Writers of America have selected Adrián Beltré, Todd Helton and Joe Mauer for election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. All 3 will be inducted, along with former manager Jim Leyland during Induction Weekend 2024 July 19-22 in Cooperstown, N.Y., at the grounds of the Clark Sports Center.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Joshua Whaley of Pitcher for Criminal possession of a Controlled substance, criminal use of drug paraphernalia & criminal possession of stolen property. Members of State Parole searched Whaley’s property and located a shotgun, and a case containing fifty wax envelopes of Fentanyl and packaging material, a pick up truck with an altered vehicle identification number, which was reported stolen out of New Hartford, Whaley was processed and was held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on his Warrant. Whaley is to appear in the Town of Pitcher Court at a later date.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced support for bipartisan legislation to help expand the mental health workforce in underserved communities. The Mental Health Professionals Workforce Shortage Loan Repayment Act would incentivize mental health professionals to practice in underserved areas by offering them student loan forgiveness up to $250,000. 55 Out Of New York’s 62 Counties, Don’t Have Enough Psychiatrists, Psychologists, or Social Workers to address the growing mental health crisis in New York State.

Former Teacher Benjamin Moyse of Delhi, pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Official Misconduct by a Public Servant, in Delaware County Court. A Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 11 count indictment last year against Moyse, where he was accused of intentionally aided a person under 16 years of age, to possessing and disseminating child pornography, and that he failed to follow Delaware Academy’s policy and procedures when students and parents reported that students were being sexually abused. Moyse was sentenced to a conditional discharge of 1 year for each count. Separate proceedings by the State Department of Education, Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability are pending, his teaching license is being revoked in New York State.

Attorney General Letitia James announced today that a federal appeals court has upheld a court order that New York, the Federal Trade Commission and 6 other states won against convicted criminal Martin Shkreli for engaging in illegal and monopolistic behavior as the CEO of Vyera Pharmaceuticals. The Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit affirmed the January 2022 decision of the District Court for the Southern District of New York, which found that Shkreli violated both federal and state laws by engaging in an illegal scheme to maintain a monopoly over a lifesaving drug, Daraprim, after increasing its price by over 4,000%, Shkreli is banned for life from the pharmaceutical industry and ordered to pay $64.6 million.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 20-year-old Rebecca Stickle of Livingston Manor for an alleged Assault on January 3rd, in the Town of Walton. Stickle is accused of making threats to a female victim that she would hit her with her vehicle. Stickle then attempted to leave the scene, and subsequently struck the female victim, causing physical injury. On January 13th, Deputies, assisted by State Police located and arrested Stickle at her residence she was charged with 2nd degree Assault & was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to arraignment.
