State Police responded responded Friday to State Route 34 in the town of Barton for a head-on collision with injuries. A preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that a Toyota Highlander driven by 42 year old Janesa Lorenzo of the Bronx crossed into the opposite lane of travel and struck a Chevy Silverado pick-up truck head-on, driven by 68 year old Gary Sinsabaugh of Athens, Pennsylvania Sinsabaugh was pronounced dead at the scene. Janesa Lorenzo was transported to Packer in critical condition. Front Seat passenger, 56-year-old Delroy Christie from the Bronx was taken to Packer Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Rear seat passenger, 41 year old Carlos Lorenzo from the Bronx, was pronounced deceased on scene, another Rear seat passenger was 38 year old Sabrina Surita of New Jersey succumbed to her injuries at Packer Hospital. The investigation is on-going.
41 year old William Sabines of McDonough was sentenced to 8 years in prison last week, in connection with the death of Jesse Donlin in 2019. Sabines admitted to causing the death of Donlin and attempting to conceal his crimes, Sabines pleaded guilty in October to 1st-degree manslaughter and concealment of a human corpse in connection with Donlin’s death.
The State Department of Labor released local unemployment rates for November, The State’s unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in November, locally, Chenango Country reported 3% unemployment, Delaware Country registered 3.4% and Otsego County had 3.3% unemployment in November.
Delaware Opportunities and the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce provided Christmas gifts to Delaware County children in need this month, Over 800 children from nearly 300 families benefited from this collaborative effort this year.
The Chenango Arts Council has been awarded at $40,000 Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. The State Council has awarded $82 million this year to 509 artists and 1,497 organizations across the state.

Otsego County District Attorney's Office announced the sentencing of Jamesan Conville of Pennsylvania. Conville was charged with reckless endangerment for driving off with an Otsego County Deputy partially inside of his car and dragged the deputy 300 feet. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on I-88 in the Town of Milford after Conville was clocked at about 100 miles an hour. Conville is expected to serve between 1 to 4 years in state prison.

State Police reported that a small Beechcraft aircraft made an emergency landing on the State Thruway in the city of Albany Friday afternoon. The pilot was 19 year old Logan Steed of South Carolina, he told police that he realized he wouldn’t make the Albany Airport runway due to mechanical issues and instead decided to land on the Thruway. Steed & his 2 passengers were not injured, they were heading to Vermont, State Police and the FAA continue to investigate the incident.
Friends of Recovery Dedicated to Others celebrated the re-opening of its new recovery center, “The Turning Point of Delaware County” on Friday. The new facility provides a new and improved space for people struggling with substance abuse and addiction. The building additionally has a private entrance to keep confidentiality for patients going to the downtown Delhi location.

All water systems in the state were mandated to complete a Lead Service Line inventory for all service connections. Sidney Village Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News that they had to send the letter out to residents, but there is no history of lead or copper piping used in the village of Sidney:

Anyone who would like to have their water service lines tested anyway, can call Shane Nordberg at the Sidney Wastewater Treatment plant to find out about testing kits, the number of 607-561-2330. Baker said that test kits typically cost about $45.

The Jennings Creek/Sterling Forest State Park wildfire on the New York border was fully contained over the weekend, Response actions in the area will continue in the coming days with a smaller force of state and local experts as final fire control efforts advance. To date, the fire has burned 5,304 acres across New York and New Jersey since Nov. 8. The fire is 100-percent contained and 100-percent controlled.
Delaware Opportunities and the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce are partnering with dozens of businesses and organizations across Delaware County to provide Christmas gifts to Delaware County children in need. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced nearly $220 million in federal funding to support counter-terrorism and emergency preparedness efforts across New York State. The funding is provided by the FEMA, it supports planning, organization, equipment, training and exercise activities which are critical to sustaining and improving community prevention, protection, response and recovery capabilities. Locally, Chenango & Otsego Counties get over $93,000 each, Delaware County receives more that $85,000.
New York State repealed on Friday a law that made it a crime to cheat on your spouse, which was a misdemeanor punishable by up to 3 months in prison. Governor Hochul signed the bill that repealed that law that dates back to 1907, about a dozen people have been charged since the 1970s, and 5 of those cases resulted in convictions.

The special enforcement period runs through this Sunday and will also target other unsafe driving behaviors like Move Over Law violations. During the 2023 Thanksgiving holiday period, law enforcement officers arrested 1,342 drivers for DWI, issued 7,656 speeding tickets and 970 tickets for distracted driving.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded last month to a Harassment complaint in the Town of Davenport. 75-year-old George Sydlar of Davenport had engaged in a course of conduct, which alarmed or annoyed another person, and Deputies requested a criminal summons to be issued by the Davenport Town Court, last week Deputies arrested Sydlar, he is scheduled to return to the Davenport Town Court at a later date. Sydlar was sentenced to 30 days in jail earlier this year after he falsely reported that his neighbor committed a crime, and he refused to cooperate with authorities during the investigation.
NYSEG announced that almost all of the power has been restored, following last week's Heavy Wet Snow, that knocked down tree limbs & power lines all over the region. NYSEG was assisted by power companies from all over the northeast, after 24,000 customers lost power.

51 year old David Louden of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Friday after being arrested for a probation violation. The Delaware County Department of Probation had filed a revocation petition alleging 10 violations of the terms of his probation, for failing to report to his probation officer, possessing and consuming alcohol in violation of his conditions, possessing illegal narcotics, and refusing to answer the door to probation officers at his residence. Louden was remanded to the Delaware County Jail, he is scheduled for a conference on December 9th. .

Businesses interested in having a collection box should call the chamber office at 607-746-2281, they will bring a collection box for the public to drop off new, unwrapped toys and advertise that your business is a collection point! Chamber staff will pick up the toys from your business and deliver them to Delaware Opportunities, for distribution of the gifts to Delaware County families in December

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 59 year old John Williams of Edmeston after he attempted to flee a traffic stop. Williams was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful fleeing a Police Officer, DWI, & various traffic violations. Williams failed to stop for deputies, he fled & eventually lost control of his motorcycle in a cornfield, he was not injured but was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, & he is accused of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of a drug. Williams will appear in the Town of Edmeston Court at a later date.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that a fugitive wanted for murder in Georgia was arrested Monday by their Warrants Division. Last week, the Sheriff’s Office received information that 21 year old Dawensley Astrel of Binghamton had an active arrest warrant out of the state of Georgia for Murder, he was enrolled as a student at Broome Community College. The Sheriff's Office coordinated with SUNY Broome Campus Safety to take Astrel into custody without incident, he will be extradited back to Georgia to face murder charges.

Walton Fire Department responded Monday night at about 11:15pm to a reported structure fire at 30 Union Street in the village. All occupants were out of the structure when Firefighters arrived, they were able to remove pets from the residence. Walton Fire Department was assisted by Trout Creek, Delhi, Franklin Fire Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Delaware County Planning Board announced that they plan to develop a Strategic Comprehensive Plan, to guide future growth in the County. Fisher Associates will lead the planning process and public engagement efforts. The 2nd Public Input session will be held tonight from 6:00 PM -8:00 PM at the Walton Fire Hall, on West Street. The input gathered during the input sessions will be reviewed by Delaware County Planning and Fisher Associates, followed by additional opportunities for public review and comment.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 3.8% in August compared to the same month in 2023, after stagnant figures in July, according to data released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. County and city collections in the rest of the state totaled $945 million, an increase of 3.5%. 45 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.

An investigation revealed that a 40-year-old male of Oneonta, NY sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound after a dispute involving several individuals, he was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital by a private vehicle and was later transported to Bassett Hospital for further care. The vehicle carrying the victim was hit by gunfire during the incident. 34 year old Ishmael Seabrook of Oneonta was charged with 2 counts of Attempted Murder, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Reckless Endangerment, State Police were assisted by the Oneonta City Police Department, Seabrook was arraigned at the Otsego County Jail and was remanded without bail.

Bainbridge Guilford Superintendent Tim Ryan released a statement about an incident Friday evening as B-G was hosting a football game with Walton. During the game administration was notified that a student was overheard saying he had a gun at the game, law enforcement was notified, the student was located and was taken away from the game & Staff remained with the student until law enforcement arrived and took over the situation. Ryan stated that there was no fight at the game and there was no gun, there was no need to suspend or cancel the game or send everyone home. Law enforcement continued to meet with the student and his family, they left the premises and law enforcement officers remained at the game until the conclusion.

Broome County Sheriff Road Patrol deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident involving 2 vehicles Early Sunday morning on Morgan Road in the Town of Binghamton. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar identified the deceased as 29 year old Charles Burrell of Conklin, who was ejected from 1 of the vehicles, he said that the operators of the 2 vehicles were engaged in a continuing dispute over women & narcotics, they engaged in a road rage incident that ended with the fatality. 20 year old Cody Diffendorf of Kirkwood & 26 year old James MacDowall of Binghamton were each charged with 2nd degree manslaughter, both are in the custody of the Broome County Correctional facility pending future court action.

State Police responded late last night to a residence on Houck Road in the town of Masonville for a reported domestic dispute. 32 year old Drew Garnier of Masonville, was charged with 2nd degree Murder and 2 counts of attempted Murder. Garnier allegedly stabbed his pregnant wife, 29 year old Samantha Garnier & their 2 children. Troopers and Sheriff’s Deputies rendered aid to Samantha prior to EMT’s arrival, she was airlifted to Wilson Medical Center where she later succumbed to her injuries. 1 child was taken to Wilson Medical Center but later transferred to Upstate Medical Center. A second child was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center. Both children are expected to survive. Garnier was arrested on scene and taken to A.O Fox Hospital and upon release, he was processed at Troop C in Sidney & was transported to the Delaware Correctional Facility where he was remanded without bail.

A 32-year-old man was shot in the upper arm and airlifted to Albany Medical Center, with a non-life-threatening injury. 60 year old Robert Trago Jr., of Hancock, was charged with Attempted Murder and Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was located just before 3:00 pm., in the Margaretville area and taken into custody. Trago Jr. was taken to Delhi where he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $100,000 cash, $200,000 credit, $400,000 bond.

State Police responded late Tuesday Night & early Wednesday Morning to 2 multiple vehicle crashes on I-81 in the towns of Lisle & then Marathon. The 1st accident occurred when 28 year old Singh Simran of Calgary, Alberta went off the roadway into the grassy median & attempted to bring the tractor trailer back into the roadway but overturned, blocking both lanes, 19 year old Danial Kirmani struck the cab with his car, 2nd tractor trailer operated by 67 year old Mykola Khudyk of Quebec collided with the trailer portion of the first tractor trailer, Kirmani was transported to Wilson Hospital for minor injuries. in the 2nd accident, in the town of Marathon, 31 year old Nicholas Espino of Bronx, failed to observe another tractor trailer slowing down, driven by 34 year old Gregory Wilson of Mexicao New York, & rear ended it, No injuries were reported. The portion of I-81 from Marathon to Lisle was closed for several hours due to the dense fog, clean up & the investigation of both crashes, The highway was reopened at 8:30 Wednesday Morning.

37 year old Paul Fontana, Jr. of Delhi pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon in Delaware County Court Monday. Fontana appeared for a scheduled suppression hearing, prior to the hearing, he pleaded guilty in order to satisfy an indictment which alleged that Fontana had illegally possessed 10 or more firearms, including “ghost guns” in his home. The Village of Delhi Police and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded after a complaint was lodged that Fontana was making threats to harm himself and others. Fontana will be sentenced to serve 6 years in state prison, and an additional 5 years of post-release supervision.

State Police arrested 72 year old Thomas Jacobson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for DWI & Reckless Driving. Troopers received information that a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on State Route 17, they located the vehicle, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes near Deposit. Troopers attempted to flag down the driver from the opposite lanes but were unable to gain his attention, Jacobson stopped near mile marker 274 in the town of Sanford when another vehicle blocked the roadway. Jacobson was arrested, his BAC was .17%. He was issued appearance tickets to the Sanford Town Court on August 2nd.
Otsego County Public Health will hold a free rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats & ferrets this evening, at Clifton Park in Unadilla, the clinic will run from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

On March 30th, The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Division received a complaint of a stolen vehicle from a residence in the Town of New Berlin. Gajdzis is accused of stealing the vehicle, On April 1, she contacted a member of the Detectives Division regarding a separate matter and agreed to meet the Detective, she was arrested, was processed, arraigned & was remanded back to the correctional on cash bail and is scheduled to reappear in the Town of New Berlin Court at a later date.

Oneonta Police Department responded last night to investigate a reported gunshot wound victim at Fox Hospital's emergency room. Officers learned that a 51-year-old male victim was transported by a 3rd party in a private vehicle, which left the scene prior to the arrival of police. The victim stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet. Police searched the location & no evidence was found. Hospital Security Staff were able to provide surveillance video of the vehicle and individual dropping the victim off at the hospital. An Otsego County Deputy located the vehicle on I-88 and initiate a traffic stop. 3 people were in the vehicle, Police discovered that the incident may have occurred on River Street between Mitchell and Wilcox, but no evidence was located, Anyone with any information should contact Oneonta Police at (607) 432-1111, or at local.nixle.com/tip/city-of-oneonta.
The Binghamton Police Department arrested a 17-year-old from Johnson City for leaving the scene of a pedestrian hit-and-run Tuesday afternoon. Binghamton Police responded at Court and Water streets for a report of a person who was crossing the road being struck by a vehicle, the victim was a 45 year old man from Binghamton, He was transported to an area hospital w& was in critical condition. Detectives found the suspect and their vehicle later, he was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket.

Delaware County District Attorney's office announced that 60 year old Eva Witteman of Binghamton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and was sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision in Delaware County Court. On February 21, 2023, a Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy, conducted a welfare check of a vehicle which appeared to be broke down on State Highway 17 in Hancock, Witteman had a suspended license, & was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle, & she possessed 12 grams of methamphetamine. Witteman pleaded guilty to the drug charge, she was to 5 years of felony probation supervision. if she violates probation, she could be re-sentenced to 2.5 years in state prison.
