The final two weekends in March have been designated as New York State Maple Weekends, & the making maple syrup will be highlighted this year at Rogers Environmental Center during their Maple Magic Weekend Celebration in Sherburne on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29, from 12PM-3PM on both days. State Police executed a search warrant at a property on Mudge King Road in the town of North Norwich Wednesday night as part of an investigation into possible animal neglect. Over 4 dozen animals were removed, including 30 horses, all animals were all in need of medical care & were taken to various animal rescue locations around the region, Police located multiple deceased animals on the property. The landowners are cooperating with State Police, who were assisted by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Chenango County Office of Emergency Management, the Susquehanna SPCA, Chenango County SPCA, and numerous animal care professionals and advocates. The investigation is on-going.
The Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved $273 million in financial assistance for water infrastructure improvement projects across New York State. Locally, Funding was approved for the City of Norwich for $4 million in grant and interest-free financing for the planning, design, and construction of wastewater treatment plant upgrades, the Village of Sherburne receives $3.7 million grant for the planning, design, and construction of wastewater treatment plant upgrades.
The Oneonta Rotary & the Otsego County Department of Health announced the installation of 5 new Narcan Boxes throughout the county as part of its ongoing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic. The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that 30-year-old Jordann Maroney of Norwich pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Firearm after she was in possession of an illegal and unlicensed .22 caliber revolver, cocaine, and methamphetamine during a traffic stop in the Town of Barker in March. Maroney will be sentenced at a later date.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 27 year old Austin DeMuth of Guilford following a vehicle pursuit Monday afternoon with a motorcycle, from the Town of Smithville & into Cortland County & Broome County. DeMuth was taken into custody, following a pursuit on foot in Whitney Point, he was transported to Wilson Hospital with minor injuries, & he was charged with Unlawful fleeing, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest and numerous traffic violations. DeMuth also had a warrant out of the Town of Norwich Court, he was arraigned in the City of Norwich Court and was remanded with no bail and is to return to court on a later date.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded Wednesday to a report of a trespass in progress at a Town of Norwich residence. A male and two females were found and detained at the location, the vehicle driven to the residence was reported stolen from New Hartford in June. Deputies Arrested Aaron Gabriel, Tami Lyn Gray of Norwich and Jennifer Pollock of Norwich, for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Conspiracy, all are being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility.
The Chenango County Historical Society announced their Summer Barn Party, celebrating 175 years of the Chenango County Fair, tonight from 6:00 to 8:30 PM in the Society’s Loomis Barn, at 41 Rexford Street in Norwich. Norwich City Police arrested 42 year old Todd Jackson of Norwich for allegedly setting a dumpster on fire at a Norwich senior living facility in the early morning hours on Saturday, April 30th. The fire damaged the dumpster & surrounding fences, The Norwich Fire department quickly extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported. Jackson was arrested Thursday for 2nd & 3rd degree criminal mischief and 5th degree arson, he was arraigned in Norwich City Court and held on $10,000 bail.

35 year old Patrick Kain of Norwich was sentenced in federal court Thursday to 35 years in jail & 20 years post release-supervision on 3 counts of sexual exploitation of a child and 1 count of committing a felony involving a minor by a registered sex offender. Kain was convicted in Chenango County Court of Sexual Abuse in 2014, which required him to register as a sex offender; he admitted that he created sexually explicit images & videos of 3 different victims approximately 5 years old.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 2 people Tuesday after Deputies responded to a burglary reported in the Town of Hamden. The home owner's Video captured 2 subjects, 1 with a handgun, who forcefully entered the home. Randy Hawkins of Morris was taken into custody by State Police; George Klinger was taken into custody at his Morris residence by members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and State Police. Officers executed a search warrant at Hawkins’ and Klinger’s Morris residence and recovered a quantity of firearms, ammunition and other property reported stolen in recent Delaware County burglaries. Hawkins and Klinger were charged with 1st degree burglary and criminal use of a firearm, they were arraigned in the Town of Hamden Court, Hawkins was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $75,000 cash bail and Klinger was remanded on $40,000 cash bail. The investigation is on-going and more arrests are anticipated.

City of Norwich Mayor Shawn Sastri announced plans to resign, and he will take over the position as the city's Youth Bureau director.  Sastri's resignation takes effect on July 18th.  City officials will meet tomorrow regarding the mayor's plans.

Chobani announced that they are raising their minimum hourly wage from $13 to $15, starting in the first quarter of 2021, at the headquarters in Norwich, and at their Greek yogurt plants in South Edmeston and in Twin Falls, Idaho.  Employees already making more than $15 an hour will see their pay increase by comparable amounts. Chobani’s average hourly rate at the facilities will be about $19 an hour.

Governor Cuomo announced that 98,413 test results were reported Monday, yielding 1,509 positive cases statewide.  The state has 1083 Hospitalized, there are 233 in ICU Beds, 120 are on ventilators, and there were 15 more deaths Monday, bringing the state death toll to 25,758.
