Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Jon Squires of Norwich for 3 counts of Criminal Contempt Saturday, after Deputies responded to a complaint in Oxford. Squires allegedly violated an order of protection issued by the Chenango County Family Court. Squires was arrested and arraigned, he was released on his own recognizance and is to appear in the Village of Oxford Court on a later date.
Unadilla Fire Department responded Monday afternoon at approximately 3:14 PM, to a 2 vehicle accident involving a school bus. Fire Department units & an ambulance responded to the scene, it was determined that the incident was minor in nature, every student on the bus was evaluated by EMS personnel. no injuries were reported.

On Sunday morning at 9:14pm the City of Norwich Fire Department was dispatched for the report of a structure fire located at 6 & 6A Griffin Street in the City of Norwich. Firefighters found a working fire, crews entered the apartment building and found fire and smoke conditions within both apartments, they searched for occupants on all floors, they were able to bring the fire under control within an hour of arrival. Norwich Fire Department was assisted by the Sherburne, Oxford, North Norwich & Plymouth Fire Departments, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and involved improperly discarded ashes from a prior campfire with the remaining ashes placed in a garbage bag on the rear porch of the home. There were no reported injuries to firefighters. 2 occupants of the home were evaluated at the scene by EMS & were released.

Norwich Police arrived & discovered the 2 victims outside the structure, EMT 's arrived & transported the victims to the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for burns & injuries, Norwich received assistance from Sherburne & Oxford fire departments, the investigation listed the cause as accidental caused by a chimney fire that extended through the home from an operating coal stove, there were no functioning smoke detectors , no firefighters were injured.

State Police responded Friday night to a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 22, in the town of Richfield Springs. 29-year-old Ashley Faubert of Ilion left the roadway and struck a tree. Residents attempted to assist her, including an EMT who initiated CPR until Otsego EMS arrived to transport Faubert to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where she was later pronounced deceased. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The City of Norwich Police Department arrested 33 year old Chad Potter of Sherburne, following a multi-agency investigation into interference with public safety communications. The investigation began in March of 2021, when it was alleged that Potter unlawfully transmitted over a law enforcement radio frequencies on multiple occasions, interfering with police, fire, and EMS operations throughout Chenango County. Potter broadcast false statements, including one transmission of "shots fired, shots fired," Potter was interviewed and admitted to transmitting over the law enforcement frequency and making the false statements, & having flashing lights on his vehicle, he was charged with 2 counts of Obstruction of Governmental Administration & Making a Terroristic Threat. Potter faces court action at a later date.

The Unadilla Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire in the town of Unadilla on State Route 7 near the State Police Barracks, around 12:00 AM earlier today, Unadilla Firefighters were able to make an aggressive push into the residence and contain the fire to the room of origin. Crews were back and in service by 4:45am, Unadilla was assisted by Sidney Fire Department & EMS, and the Wells Bridge, Franklin, Otego & Sidney Center Fire Departments.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Thomas Kopech of Norwich Friday on an active Arrest Warrant from Town of Plymouth Court from an incident on May 31st, where Kopech allegedly broke into a residence in the Town of Plymouth and assaulted the victims inside the home. Kopech then fled the scene before Deputies responded which resulted in the warrant of arrest. Kopech was arrested without incident and arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail. Kopec is to appear in court on a later date. Kopech was charged with Burglary, Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Criminal Contempt, Aggravated Sexual Abuse, Criminal Obstruction of Breath/Blood Circulation & Unlawful Imprisonment.

Sidney EMS & State Police responded to a motor vehicle accident on Delaware County Route 4 in Sidney, initial reports suggested that a vehicle rolled off the roadway with 3 possible injuries Sunday at about 5:40 PM Sunday, injured occupants were taken to area hospitals for the treatment of injuries, the cause of the crash is under investigation, The Operator was identified as 20 year old Kadance Maus of Walton.

State Police arrested 60 Year Old Christopher Rayford of Worcester Tuesday Night, following a physical domestic dispute involving a firearm. Troopers were dispatched to County Road 39 in Worcester, they determined that after physically assaulting a victim, Rayford destroyed property within the home and shot several rounds into the ceiling. Rayford is also accused of taking the victim’s cell phone and preventing the victim from calling for help. Troopers took Rayford into custody and the victim was checked out by Worcester EMS for injuries on scene but did not wish to be transported to a local hospital. Rayford has been charged with Reckless Endangerment, Strangulation, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Assault, Menacing & Criminal Mischief, he was processed and was transported to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for centralized arraignment.

The Norwich Police Department announced today that they have been awarded a New York State Office of Mental Health Division of Forensic Services grant and have partnered with Chenango County Behavioral Health to create a Crisis Intervention Team in the City of Norwich. The first goal of CIT programs is to transform crisis response systems to minimize the times that law enforcement officers are the first responders to individuals in emotional distress, the 2nd goal is to ensure that, in situations where their presence is required, police have the knowledge, skills, and support to deescalate situations and divert individuals from the criminal and juvenile justice systems whenever possible.

The Norwich Police Department announced a joint venture with the Norwich City School District and the Vestal Police Department, Vestal Police Department has invited the Norwich Police Department School Resource Officer, Nicholas Mooney, to bring up to 20 High School Students to attend the Youth Police Academy, which is a 2 week venture that runs from July 14th through July 25th. Students will take part in physical training and lectures to include SWAT Team tactics, Bomb Disposal, EMS/Fire Support, K9 Demonstrations and Crime Scene Scenarios. The Norwich City School District will provide daily transportation for the students, those who are interested should email Officer Mooney at nmooney@norwichpd.org and ask for an application. There is no fee for this event.

Walton Fire and EMS Responded Tuesday Night at about 7:00 PM to a tractor trailer rollover approximately 2 miles North of the Village on State Highway 10. A fully loaded milk tanker carrying 38,000 pounds of milk had collided with guardrails and rolled onto its side, a NYSEG pole was broken and live wires were on the ground initially preventing responders from getting to the incident and driver. NYSEG responded and cleared the lives wires allowing safe access to the scene. The driver extricated himself from the cab of the truck through a window with assistance from a nearby homeowner, he was assessed by Walton EMS and transported to Delaware Valley Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Traffic on State Highway 10 was diverted while the scene was cleared, the State DOT, DEC spill response, Delaware County Sheriffs Office and Delhi Fire Department assisted, the road reopened to all traffic and All units were back in service at 11:45 pm

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Eric Nelson of Afton for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Town of North Norwich. Nelson was arrested after Deputies initiated a traffic stop, Nelson was a passenger in the vehicle, he was found to be in possession of Methamphetamine. Nelson was transported to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office for processing & was released on an appearance ticket and is to appear in Court at a later date.
State Police were dispatched to I-81 in Cortlandville for a 2-vehicle crash with injuries. Police reported that a Toyota rear-ended a Honda, then traveled into the center median. Troopers broke the window of the Toyota to remove 54 year old Kenneth Thompson of McDonough, who was breathing but unconscious, he was taken to a Syracuse Hospital, the driver of the Honda, 43 year old Darrell Batchelor of Colorado & his passenger, 60 year old Eddy Larson of Wyoming were both checked out by EMS on scene but were not transported to a hospital. The investigation is on-going.

Last year they raised $18,000 in their 1st charity auction effort for the Emergency squad.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Michael VanDerWeert of Guilford & 47 year old Dawn Cavanaugh of North Carolina, for Burglary, Petty Larceny, Criminal Mischief and Conspiracy. Deputies responded to a burglary complaint at a business in the Town of Norwich, where someone broke into the building and stole multiple items. The vehicle used in the burglary was spotted at a business in the Village of Oxford, VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh were arrested and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office where they were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
The Chenango County Historical Society will participate in Giving Tuesday, on December 3rd. Giving Tuesday asks people to donating to local charities, Giving Tuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Also, the annual Holiday Open House and Museum Store Sunday will be from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on December 1st at the Chenango County Historical Society on Rexford Street in Norwich.
UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will launch “Be the Light,” to illuminate Newton House on Broad Street in Norwich. With a suggested donation of $20, community members can purchase a light that celebrates or memorializes a loved one. Names of honorees will be displayed at CMH throughout December. Proceeds will benefit the Auxiliary’s efforts to support patient services at CMH, the lighting ceremony and reception on Tuesday, December 3rd at 5:30pm at Newton House. An investigation revealed that a utility truck was parked and unoccupied when 39 year old Robert Burns of Otego lost control of his motorcycle and slid into the front of the utility truck. He was thrown from the motorcycle and was located underneath the truck. Troopers, Otego EMS and Otego Fire rendered aid to Burns, but he was pronounced deceased on scene. The investigation is ongoing.

In 2023 the Sidney Police Department announced that they handled a total of 3,063 calls for service. The Department report said that they responded to 2,032 calls that were criminal in nature, 76 of those were felonies, there 73 animal complaints, 150 were EMS or Fire related, 287 were assisting another agency, 79 were mental health incidents & there were 73 Motor vehicle accidents in Sidney in 2023. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22 year old Cody Amidon of Sherburne for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell & Criminal use of Drug Paraphernalia, after conducting a traffic stop on a motor vehicle for an equipment violation, in the Town of Norwich. Amidon had a backpack containing methamphetamine, a digital scale, and packaging materials, He will appear in the Town of Norwich court at a later date.

The Bassett Healthcare Network announced that O’Connor Hospital in Delhi has achieved re-accreditation by the Joint Commission after an on-site assessment and survey. All hospitals, health systems, and health services must achieve certain accreditations to remain in operation, Hospitals are evaluated quality and safety, organizational performance, care plans, and Hospital surveys by the Joint Commission generally last for 3 consecutive days and occur every three years.
State Police responded to a 3-vehicle crash in the town of Newfield, with 1 fatality reported. The investigation revealed that a Toyota and a Jeep were traveling north, The Jeep was stopped for another vehicle in front of it making a turn when the Jeep was rear-ended by the Toyota, which then went into on-coming traffic and was struck by a Cadillac. A passenger of the Toyota, 17-year-old Peyton Shaw of Waverly was pronounced dead on scene, The operator of the Toyota 18-year-old Dale Beeman of Spencer, was transported to Packer Hospital, the operators of the other vehicles were treated at the scene by EMS & were released.

State Police announced that No arrests were made during an Underage Drinking Initiative in Troop “C” in Chenango County Monday. During the initiative, 14 businesses were checked. Delaware County 911 received call Sunday from the operator of tractor trailer stating that he had traveled off the roadway and had rolled over on State Highway 23 in the Town of Kortright. Delaware County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to the scene along with members of the Davenport Fire Department, Stamford Fire Department, Bovina Fire Department, Headwaters EMS and NYS DEC Spill Response team. 61 year old Michael Rowe of Sidney was taken to Fox Hospital for minor injuries and was released. 31-year-old Dylan Cole of Norwich was charged with 1st-degree assault after allegedly beating another man with a baseball bat, causing severe injuries. Norwich Police responded to Clinton Street, Cole allegedly approached a 35-year-old male with a BB gun and metal baseball bat and struck the man’s face multiple times with the bat, the victims suffered multiple fractures & lost teeth, he was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital & was later transported him to SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse to receive multiple surgeries. Cole was arraigned & was held on a $1,000 cash bail, pending court action at a later date.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 37 year old Daniel Pope of Laurens following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Morris. Pope was charged with 3 counts of Aggravated DWI for allegedly having a Child Less Than 16 Years Old in the vehicle, plus DWI, Operating a Vehicle with a BAC of .08% or higher, 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent The 3 children in pope's vehicle sustained minor injuries in the accident and were treated and released at the scene by EMS, Pope was released on an Appearance ticket and for Town of Morris Court at a later date.

Mutual aid was received from fire fighters in West Laurens, South New Berlin, Gilbertsville, Pittsfield, Edmeston, Unadilla and Otego, the cause of the fire is under investigation, no injuries were reported.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office reported that Shawn McMahon of Binghamton was the pilot & only occupant of a plane that crashed Sunday in Norwich. The National Transportation Safety Board said that the Cessna 182D plane crashed just before 3:00 PM Sunday about 1 mile west of the Eaton Airport, he had taken off from the airport and was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash. The investigation has been opened by the NTSB and the FAA.
The Norwich Fire Department responded Monday to a fire at Peacock Manor Apartments on Brown Street. Firefighters arrived at about 2:10 PM, where they encountered heavy smoke on the first floor. Firefighters located the fire, which was extinguished and under control within minutes. EMS crews evaluated 4 residents at the scene, with 2 taken to UHS Chenango Memorial ER for smoke inhalation, they were treated & released, No firefighters were injured.

Law is accused of running over 13 year old Brennan Loveless as he was riding a bicycle on January 1st on State Route 7 near his home on Belden Manor Road in Sanitaria Springs. Law allegedly fled the scene, Loveless was eventually taken to Syracuse Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law was apprehended the following day after he reported that his pickup truck had driven into a ditch along Bevier Street in an attempt to avoid striking a deer, investigators determined that Law's truck was the one that had struck and killed Loveless.

The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services reported that firefighters are continuing to fight a fire of brush & trees along the Otsego & Schoharie County line, the 2nd operational period was conducted yesterday, Fire fighters & EMS providers from Otsego, Delaware and Schoharie County expect to wrap up the the fires today, about 237 acres were affected, with 90% containment reported Thursday Afternoon.

The Norwich City School District reported that on Early Friday morning, cafeteria staff in the Gibson school were following protocol, washing bananas to serve our students, employees discovered a scorpion in the bananas. It was quickly contained. Cafeteria and custodial staff followed all protocols and no staff or students were harmed in the discovery. In addition, High School Zoology students were able to capitalize on the discovery and feed it crickets and study it under a glow light. Norwich school Officials believe that the scorpion traveled to Norwich from Guatemala, in the banana box.

State Police responded to a crash Monday involving a pedestrian in town of Sherburne. Police reported that a vehicle was traveling west on State Highway 80 when a pedestrian who was standing in the roadway and wearing dark clothing was struck. The pedestrian has been identified as 30 year old Megan Mikalunas of North Norwich, she was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the vehicle, 57 year old Robert Allen of Oneida stopped and flagged down another vehicle to call 911. Sherburne EMS and State Police responded to the scene, the investigation is on-going.

Unadilla Fire Department, Wells Bridge Fire Department plus Sidney EMS & Firefighters responded to a a 1 car Motor Vehicle Accident with entrapment Monday Afternoon at about 3:20 PM, personnel began extracting both patients, Life Net took first patient to Syracuse, the second patient was loaded in the Mercy Flight which lifted off to Syracuse at approximately 16:26.
