Nauman Hussain was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison following victim impact statements at the Schoharie County Court today, he was convicted on 20 counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, Hussain operated Prestige Limo, which owned the uninspected stretch limo that crashed in Schoharie where 20 people were killed in October 2018. Hussain's Attorney is expected to appeal.
The State DEC is warning New Yorkers of an increased Fire danger today, as much of the state has had little to no rain over the last 10 days & there will be higher temperatures over the next few days. There are currently 11 active wildfires in the state, all were started by human activity.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of a pedestrian-train accident near the Crocker Hill Rd area in the Town of Fenton Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office stated that 17-year-old Jakob McCloe of Port Crane was walking westbound on the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks near Crocker Hill Road, he was wearing noise-canceling headphones and was unable to hear the train approaching, the engineer attempted to signal multiple times to get McCloe’s attention, he was unable to stop the train, and at 8:53 am, McCloe was struck and killed and pronounced at the scene. McCloe was a student at the Chenango Valley School District.
The Chenango County Sheriff's Office reported that Shawn McMahon of Binghamton was the pilot & only occupant of a plane that crashed Sunday in Norwich. The National Transportation Safety Board said that the Cessna 182D plane crashed just before 3:00 PM Sunday about 1 mile west of the Eaton Airport, he had taken off from the airport and was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash. The investigation has been opened by the NTSB and the FAA.
The Norwich Fire Department responded Monday to a fire at Peacock Manor Apartments on Brown Street. Firefighters arrived at about 2:10 PM, where they encountered heavy smoke on the first floor. Firefighters located the fire, which was extinguished and under control within minutes. EMS crews evaluated 4 residents at the scene, with 2 taken to UHS Chenango Memorial ER for smoke inhalation, they were treated & released, No firefighters were injured.
The Chenango County Historical Society will host the museum’s annual Summer Barn Party from 6-8:30 p.m. on June 29 at 41 Rexford St., Norwich. This year’s theme is inspired by the newest Community Gallery exhibit, “Sixpence in Your Shoe: A Glimpse at Chenango County Wedding Traditions.” Proceeds support a significant portion of the organization’s annual operating budget. Bradley Law of Harpursville was arraigned Tuesday in Broome County Court for Leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and criminal possession of a firearm. Law is accused of running over 13 year old Brennan Loveless as he was riding a bicycle on January 1st on State Route 7 near his home on Belden Manor Road in Sanitaria Springs. Law allegedly fled the scene, Loveless was eventually taken to Syracuse Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law was apprehended the following day after he reported that his pickup truck had driven into a ditch along Bevier Street in an attempt to avoid striking a deer, investigators determined that Law's truck was the one that had struck and killed Loveless.
Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 41 year old Jason Dufton of Hancock, was sentenced to 7 years in state prison, and 15 years of post-release supervision for his conviction of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Dufton engaged in at least 2 sexual acts with a 10-year-old female child, in the Town of Hancock, he was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the State DNA databank, he must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.
33 year old Ammar Ali of Albany was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in State prison after pleading guilty to felony Criminal Mischief in Broome County Court. Ali admitted that on July 19, 2022, in the Town of Union, he cut off an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet while on probation, he was previously convicted for Bail Jumping in 2015,

The 61st General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held this past weekend, over 1500 paddlers. In the Men's NYMCRA Stock class, cousins Seth MacArthur of Staten Island & 1st time paddler Austin Henchey of Otego won the race by over 7 minutes, WCDO's Craig Stevens asked them about this year's Race:

This Year's Regatta saw one of the lowest river levels in the history of the race.
It was a dog fight for 2nd place in the 4 person pro class with just 5 second separating them from the 3rd place team. The Local New York Team of Bob Wisse, Larry Harrison, Jeff Shultis & Bob Zaveral teamed up again for the race. Shultis said it was a tough race:

Over 1500 paddlers competed over the 3 day event with and age range of 5 to 83 participating.
Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 43 year old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for his conviction of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child. Between January and August of 2019, Hoyt engaged in at least 2 sexual acts with a child under 13 years old, he was sentenced to 20 years of in jail followed by 10 years of post-release supervision, he was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the State DNA data-bank, he was ordered to pay a $1,000 crime victim’s fee & he must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded to a small plane crash near Norwich Sunday afternoon. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene & was the only occupant of the plane, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said the pilot was the only occupant of the plane. They were pronounced dead the scene. The investigation has been turned over to the National Safety Transportation Board.
5 municipalities in the Southern Tier were awarded the DEC Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure grant. Locally, The village of Sidney will receive more than $80,000 to install 2 fast chargers, the village of Fleischmanns will receive more than $7,500 for 2 Level 2 charging ports. NYSERDA reported that the Southern Tier has over 4200 registered EVs, more information about where to find electric vehicle chargers can be found at atlaspolicy.com/evaluateny.
The Delaware County DPW announced road work on county Routes 16 and 21 will take place in the coming weeks. Pavement rehabilitation work began today on county Route 21, from at the Walton village line heading north about 6 1/2 miles, that project will be complete by June 30. The department will begin work on county Route 16 on Monday, June 5, starting in Treadwell and progressing to state Route 10 in Fraser. that project should be completed by June 15. Drivers should expect extended delays during this work. Alternate routes are suggested.

The 4 Person Pro Division Winners were New York Paddlers Ed Curley, Ben Schlimmer, Jake Crotser & Patrick Madden, Curley summed up the conditions to WCDO after the race:

The 4 man team beat the 2nd place canoe by about 20 minutes.
In the C1 Pro Race, Canadian Christoph Marchan also won by over 20 minutes with a time of 8:55:17, it was only his 2nd time at the Clinton Regatta, he told WCDO of his strategy:

In the 2 person pro endurance race, Canadian Steve Lajoie won for the 12th time with Michigan paddler Wes Dean, , it was his 1sty pro win, , taking home the $3,000 winning purse, they talked to WCDO's Craig Stevens after the race:

And, the General Clinton welcomed back 28 time pro champion Serge Corbin back for his 32nd Clinton race, the 66 year old Canadian paddled in the mixed division for the 1st time, with his 31 year old partner Ev Chamberland, they spoke to Craig After the race:

The pair finished 1st in the mixed Pro Division & 12th overall, it was Chamberland's 2nd 70 mile finish at the Clinton regatta.
Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation released its report on the death of Roger Lynch on August 6, 2021 in Franklin, which included review of radio transmissions, body-worn camera footage, and interviews. The investigation determined that a prosecutor would not be able to disprove justification beyond a reasonable doubt at trial & criminal charges against the State Trooper who shot Lynch are not warranted. On the evening of August 5th, members of several police agencies responded to a residence on Bob Holloway Road in Delhi, following reports that an individual had been shot, they learned that Lynch had shot multiple times at 1of the residents before driving away, Lynch was found at his house, he came out with a gun aimed under his chin. When the sergeant told him not to shoot himself, Lynch then leveled his shotgun on his shoulder and took aim at a trooper & 1 of the troopers fired his rifle at Lynch, who fell back into the house, where he was pronounced dead.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 22 year old Clarence Vanier of Laurens after a search warrant was executed at a residence in the Town of Laurens. Vanier was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for a Hallucinogen, among other charges. Deputies were assisting the Oneonta Police Department with a search warrant at which time a large amount of Psilocybin mushrooms were located in the residence. Vanier was being held at the Otsego County Jail pending Central Arraignment.
The State DOT is advising motorists that the off-ramp from I-88 eastbound at Exit 2 in the Town of Fenton, will be closed from 8 pm. to 5 am. for 3 consecutive nights starting tonight through Thursday, June 1. Drivers should follow the signed detour utilizing Exit 3 and State Route 7. Motorists should anticipate travel delays.
