Sidney’s Annual Arbor Day celebration will be held tomorrow morning with Sidney Central School Students participating in the ceremony, ending with a giveaway of saplings, Sidney Shade Tree Commission chairperson Lorrie Roach explains:

Roach said that a tree planting dedication will also be scheduled, this year in honor of Mike Gavin.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 29 year old Dmitri Grassi of Greene on a Sealed Indictment Arrest Warrant. Grassi is charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, Grand Larceny & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Grassi & 1 other person are accused of entering a property & stealing items worth more than $1,000, he was processed, arraigned in Chenango County Court where he was released on his own recognizance and is to appear in Chenango County Court at a later date.

The Lineup of performers coming to the 39th Annual Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally was announced today. On Friday, August 4th – John Waite and Tommy Decarlo of Boston will perform at 6:00 PM, Saturday, August 5th Country music act Scotty McCreery at 5:00 PM, and Sunday, August 6th Gavin DeGraw will play his hits at 5:00 PM. Organizers also stated that there will also be a meet & greet with professional wrestler Kurt Angle from 3 to 6 pm. on Friday, and a Little Mermaid concert at 1 pm. on Saturday.

The General Clinton Canoe Regatta will be held May 26th though the 28th this year. Co-Chairman Mike Kauffman told WCDO News that they will stick with the 3 day event and leave Monday Memorial Day as an off day again this year:

It's been 2 weeks since Anielle “AK” McEwan Lomnicki was hit by a car while walking home from from school in Sidney, an area fundraiser for medical expenses incurred by the family, while AK remains in a Syracuse Hospital, was conducted this past weekend, spokesperson Kim Ayres told WCDO News how much was raised:

Ayres said that the effort was spearheaded by Mike Gavin, his businesses, Gavin's Pizza, Machos Tacos & Tina's Old Fashioned Donuts, with Sidney Joe's Pizza, Club 55, Trackside Dining, Beez Kneez, Roasted Coffee House and Houndstooth also participated, more fundraisers are being planned and all legitimate fundraising efforts will be posted on the “AK Strong” Facebook page. Meanwhile, AK continues to be in a medically induced coma but has been slow but stead improvement, according to her father, Rich Lomnicki.

AK Strong T-shirts are being made available locally, to assist with the medical expenses for the McEwan-Lomnicki as their daughter Anielle, also known as "AK", remains at a Syracuse Hospital with injuries sustained when she was hit by a car while walking home from school last week. Gavin said that area restaurants will be donating 10% of their sales to the family, Beez Kneez will participate on Friday, Gavin's, Machos Taco's, Tina Old Fashioned Donuts, Sidney Joe's Pizzeria, Trackside Dining & Club 55 will be participating on Saturday. Development Chenango Corporation announced the next phase of the ‘Hotel Norwich’ initiative. Last year, Development Chenango purchased 14 to 16 South Broad Street, Norwich, for the purpose of developing a boutique hotel. Development Chenango sent out a formal “Request for Qualifications” to identify a developer and operator, the DCC Board of Directors awarded the project to Mike and Dan O’Reilly, owners of Principle Design Engineering, they have 1 year to secure the funding necessary to get the project started.

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce will host their Annual Dinner & Awards Ceremony tonight, with 3 awards to be given out, Chamber President Teri Schunk comments:

Chamber President Teri Schunk was chosen as the Citizen of the Years, the Business of the Years award goes to Gavin’s Pizza. The Annual Dinner will be held at the Sidney Fire Hall on River street starting at 5:00 PM.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that the State Court of Appeals 3rd department upheld a rape conviction of Steven Silva of Johnson City. Silva was sentenced to 4 years in Jail followed by 10 years Post Release Supervision, plus he must register as a Sex Offender, for performing sexual acts with a 14 year old.

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce has a few tickets remaining for their annual Dinner on June 2nd At the River Street Fire Station. Chamber President Teri Schunk explains:

This year, the Chamber fill honor Gavin's Pizzeria as the Business of the Year, The Sidney Central School District Alumni Association as the organization of the year, & Schunk herself was voted as Citizen Of The Year.

Afton Fire fighters responded to a Commercial Building Fire at 175 Main Street last night, at the new Gavin's Pizza location that opened earlier that day.  Afton received assistance from Harpursville, Masonville, Bainbridge & Coventry.  Fire was located in the wall of the building, & was knocked down quickly; Mike Gavin told WCDO News that he hopes to be re-opening sometime next week.

The Otsego County Health Department announced that the free rabies clinics that were scheduled in the month of May have been cancelled.  The full list of Rabies clinics is available at the Otsego County Website; additional changes may be announced at a later date.

Gavin's pizza is located on Division Street in Sidney, they have been open for take out & deliveries due to the Coronavirus situation.

State Police and the Oneonta City Police Department announced arrests in Friday's 4 gas station robberies in Otsego County & 2 other burglaries.  41 year old Bryan Ruple of Otego was arrested on a number of charges for the 4 gas station robberies & the burglaries at Losie’s Gun Shop in the town of Davenport & the Oneonta Dollar Tree.  State Police also arrested 41 year old Derrick Gray of Laurens for his role in the convenience store robberies.   Ruple and Gray were held at the Oneonta City Police Department lock up pending court action.
