Governor Cuomo announced the availability of $20.5 million to aid farmland protection efforts and help prevent viable agricultural land from being converted to non-agricultural use. Eligible entities can apply for individual grants with the Application materials and webinar information available for download at agriculture.ny.gov/RFPS or at 1-800-554-4501.


25-year-old Brandy Bousson of Norwich pleaded guilty in Chenango County Court on Monday to 3rd degree burglary, a class D felony. Bousson was sentenced to 6 months in the Chenango County Jail plus 5 years probation, she was credited with time served and was released.  Bousson was accused of breaking into Mayhood's sporting goods January 6th & stealing  over 30 guns & ammunition along with Christopher Gonzalez, who was found dead of hypothermia several days later after the burglary.


A state panel implementing the  Start-Up New York program voted Tuesday to include Hartwick College in Oneonta as potential Tax free business sites.  The Oneonta zone would be 1.15 acres of vacant land at Hartwick College,  any business that would move into that site  would have all taxes waived, including sales and use taxes, real estate and property transfer taxes and local personal income taxes, Eligible businesses must be a new company in New York state, an out of state business locating here, or an expanding business. They must also create jobs in the first year and their business activities should align with the mission of the college or university.


New York will consider whether to bid on the 2024 Olympics. Talks between Governor Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will continue about whether to bid for the summer games and create an advisory committee.  The U.S. Olympic Committee is expected to narrow cities for a 2024 bid in the coming months and make a decision by year’s end. New York bid but lost the 2012 Olympics to London.


The grounds at the General Clinton Canoe Regatta in Bainbridge will be filled with rides and a variety of food concessions again this year.  Regatta Chairmen John Harmon explains:

more than 1000 canoe racers and over 10,000 spectators are expected in the region for the 52nd General Clinton Canoe Regatta over the Memorial Day weekend.


Nearly 100 New York lakes have issues with occasional algae blooms, according to U.S, Senator Chuck Schumer, who is  calling on the EPA to set standards for toxins in lakes so the state can become eligible for federal help in combating blue green algae.  Lakes in the Tri County region with blue green algae were Chenango & Echo Lake in Chenango County, plus Somerset & Titus Lakes in Delaware County.  Schumer said more than a dozen countries test drinking water for toxins, but the EPA does not.


Federal regulators are pressing officials of the  Constitution Pipeline for new information about environmental impacts as part of a move that will delay the determination on whether the project can be licensed. The authorization decision deadline had been scheduled by FERC for September 11th , but now the commission advised the pipeline company that they are required to submit new information, following new comments from the earlier impact report.  FERC did not indicate how much additional time would be required.


The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a Boater Safety Course on May 31st from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The class is free to all participants, who were born on or after May 1st 1996 who are now required to complete an approved course in boater education to operate any boat or watercraft. State police announced that the autopsy on 29 year old Christopher Gonzalez showed that he died from Hypothermia.  Gonzalez was wanted by police for questioning into last week’s burglaries at Mayhood's Sporting Goods in Norwich.  State police also said that all of the guns stolen from Maywood’s have been retrieved.  Police are ruling Gonzalez’s death as accidental, his girlfriend, 25 year old Brandy Bousson of Norwich is being held in the Chenango county Jail on 3rd degree burglary charges for her alleged part in the Mayhood’s case.


NY State of Health released demographic enrollment data on the more than 230,000 New Yorkers who enrolled in health plans through December 24th for those whose coverage started this month.  The statistics show that close to half of enrollees were previously uninsured, enrollment occurred in every county in the state and across all health plans, and a mix of age groups.  The open enrollment period for individuals runs through March 31st.

State Police reported that the body of 29-year-old Christopher Gonzalez was located in a wooded area off Guinn Ridge Road.  The cause and manner of death is undetermined, the body was removed for an autopsy at Lourdes Hospital.  Gonzalez was wanted for questioning in the Mayhood’s Sporting Goods burglary, his girlfriend, 25 year old Brandy Bousson of Norwich has been charged with 3rd degree Burglary, for her alleged involvement in the gun burglaries at the Mayhood's, she was arraigned & was remanded to Chenango County Jail in lieu of $250,000 cash bail.


State Senator Jim Seward announced Friday a new leadership team has been established to carry out Otsego County’s economic development strategy.  Sandy Mathes, Jr is a past executive director of the Greene County IDA, he will team with Elizabeth Horvath of Cooperstown who will serve as the IDA’s chief operating officer.  Seward commented about the appointments in Oneonta Friday:

Both Mathes and Horvath will work from the Otsego County Office Building at 242 Main Street in Oneonta, which also houses the Otsego County Economic Development Corporation, Main Street Oneonta, and the recently formed Oneonta Conference and Events Coalition.


Delaware County Deputies arrested a 16-year-old Harlem youth Friday for 2nd degree Assault, the youth was charged following a physical altercation at the Youth Leadership Academy in Kortright.  The youth was arraigned & was remanded to the County Jail on $1,500 cash bail.

Mayhood's burglary case update

State Police in Norwich report that during a search in the town of Norwich, the body of 29 year old Christopher Gonzalez was located deceased in a wooded area off Guinn Ridge Road.  The cause and manner of death is undetermined at this time.  An autopsy will be conducted at Lourdes hospital.  Police announced earlier in the week that Gonzalez was wanted for questioning in the Mayhood’s sporting Goods burglary.  State Police in Norwich have arrested Gonzalez’s girlfriend, 25 year old Brandy Bousson of Norwich for 3rd degree Burglary, for her alleged involvement in the gun burglaries at the Mayhood's.   She was arraigned in the NorwichTown court and remanded to Chenango County Jail in lieu of $250,000.00 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo and Vice President Joe Biden discussed federal government funding for statewide projects to improve infrastructure damaged by Tropical Storm Lee, Hurricane Irene & Hurricane Sandy since 2011.  Cuomo said that bridges & roads upstate need to be dealt with quickly & correctly:

Governor Cuomo said that he would outline more specifics for infrastructure projects during tomorrow's “State of the State” address to a joint session of the Legislature.


State Police are investigating 2 separate gun burglaries at Mayhood’s Sporting Goods on State Route 12 in Norwich.  The burglaries occurred between 10:00 PM Monday & 6:00 AM this morning.  Numerous firearms were taken from the store including upwards of 22 handguns, several long guns and numerous boxes of ammunition.  Anyone with information is asked to contact state police at 334-3296.


State police arrested 33-year-old Bobbie Jo Nye of Mount Upton on a charge of 4th degree arson.  Troopers accuse Nye of setting a bag of cat excrement on fire on the front porch of a residence in Guilford on December 27th.  Nye was arraigned & was sent to the Chenango county jail on $5,000 cash bail pending future court action.


The annual Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame election will announce their choices for induction into the Nation Baseball Hall Of Fame tomorrow.  Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson will reveal the results at 2:00 PM.  The Class of 2014 will be enshrined July 27th in Cooperstown as part of the Induction Weekend at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown


Chenango County residents who earned less than $51,000 this tax year may qualify for free tax preparation.  Residents will need to provide preparers with photo ID, Social Security Cards for themselves & all claimed as dependents, as well W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R, Bank statements with Interest and dividends, Copies of their prior year federal and state returns, will be required. State consumer confidence fell flat in December according to a Siena Research Institute poll. The state consumer sentiment poll is released each month and measures people’s willingness to spend as opposed to their ability to spend. The state’s consumer index in December was 73.6, up 0.3 from November. The nation’s consumer index rose 7.4 points to 82.5 in December.
