Tomorrow is Election Day, with some contentious local races to be decided by voters.  WCDO News Director Rob Ray looks at some of those races:

State voters tomorrow will be deciding on propositions on the ballot, including the proposal to add 7 casinos, mainly across the Southern Tier & Catskills and another key proposition calls for extending the mandatory retirement age for certain Judges to be increased to 80.


Binghamton Police are investigating a homicide at 32 Mygatt Street, where a fire had been reported early this morning.  Firefighters responded at around 6:00 AM for a  fire on the 2nd floor, Police were called to the scene after 1 person was found dead inside.  The investigation is continuing.


State Police announced that Major Donald Faughnan is the new commanding officer at State Police Troop C in Sidney.  Major Faughnan replaces Major Kevin Molinari, who retired in May.


Springbrook announced their 1st community art show, entitled "Gifts Unwrapped—Celebrating Diversity through Creative Expression” which will run from December 5th through the 13th at Springbrook’s location on state Route 7 in Oneonta.  On December 5th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, there will be a special opening reception as part of Springbrook’s Holiday Open House.  Artist’s Submissions will be accepted until November 28th, submissions are required through an online entry at    springbrookny.org.


NYSEG will be holding a job fair in Vestal this Thursday November 7th from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at their facilities at 4425 Old Vestal Road.  Job opportunities are available in asset management and planning, customer service, electric transmission and distribution, engineering and delivery, gas operations, human resources, information technology, and operations technologies and business transformation. Prospective candidates are encouraged to attend and bring their résumés.


Governor Cuomo encouraged minority- and women-owned business enterprises, to explore the more than $1 billion in contracting opportunities that is available for firms looking to do business with New York State. The Governor announced that an electronic resource book “Opportunities Start Here!” it is available to help businesses navigate through the many state agency and authority contracting opportunities, It can be downloaded at www.nysmwbeforum.org/opportunities.


Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced that the Election Day hotline would be in operation to ensure that all eligible voters are able to cast their ballot in the General Election tomorrow. The Attorney General urges voters to call the office’s hotline at 800-771-7755 between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Election Day to report issues or problems at the polls.

State police held their annual memorial service this morning at Troop C headquarters in Sidney.  Troop C Commanding Officer Major Kevin Molinari comments:

State troopers, members of other law enforcement agencies, lawmakers and friends & families of those who lost their lives in the line of duty attended today’s event, which was followed by a chicken barbecue.


State Senator Jim Seward approves of the new “Tax-Free NY” initiative unveiled by Governor Cuomo Wednesday:

The Governor said that the Tax-Free NY proposal would entice companies to Upstate New York by offering new businesses the opportunity to operate tax-free while partnering with the SUNY system.


The County of Chenango IDA was notified Wednesday that the Federal Economic Development Administration has approved a $4.7 million dollar award for the Revitalization of the Chenango County Rail System.  Commerce Chenango & IDA president Steve Craig told WCDO of the potential importance of this project:

The Federal investment represents 80% of the $5.8 million cost to completely revitalize the Utica Main Rail Line through Chenango County. The federal funding leverages an award the IDA received from the state DOT for $770,422, local sources will invest a total of $408,070.  rail beds & infrastructure were damaged by 2006 floods.


The 51st running of the general Clinton canoe regatta is this weekend, which will include the 2nd annual Regatta Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & dinner Saturday.  Jeff Shultis of Otego will be inducted this year, for finishing the 70-mile race 33 times:

Barton is 1 of 2 paddlers to win both the 2 person race, with Serge Corbin in 1990, and the one man pro race, he holds the fastest times in both categories & has raced the Clinton 28 times.


The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21-year-old Kayla Ray of Masonville on 1 count of 1st degree Criminal Contempt.  Ray is accused of violating an order of protection issued out of Sidney village court she was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $50,000 cash bail and $50,000 bond, pending court action on June 3rd.


The Wall That Heals, is a traveling 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, it will arrive for the start of a 4-day stay that runs from this Friday through Monday in the Village of Cooperstown.  The Wall will be set up at the Doubleday Field Parking Lot on Main Street; it will arrive this afternoon between 4:15 and 4:30, with a reception for The Wall That Heals volunteers at 5:30 PM.


The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 50-year-old Stephen Christoffersen of Port crane for DWI.  The arrest followed a call of an erratic driver on state route 12 in the Town of Oxford.  Christoffersen was arraigned in the Town of Oxford Court after refusing to take a breath test. He is to reappear in the Town of Oxford Court at a later date.
