Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the State DOT & Emergency crews are gearing up to respond to any issues that pop up due to the nor'easter spinning across the state today & into tonight. Governor Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency for several counties, including Broome, Chenango, Delaware, & Otsego Counties, locally; The National Weather service has Flood Watch's & Flood Warnings in effect throughout the state.
State Police reported that no one was injured in a prolonged dangerous issue early Monday Morning. Delaware County 911 received about 30 calls regarding a wrong-way driver on State Route 17 in Hancock travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes. Troopers responded, coordinated a road closure of State route 17 East of Exit 94 and were able to stop the vehicle. The investigation found that an 86-year-old man from Ithaca had not returned home and had been reported missing by his wife to the Ithaca Police Department, the man was suffering from Dementia, he was transported to an area hospital, and there were no reported accidents or injuries from the incident.
Delaware County Public Health reported another COVID 19 death in Monday's report; they now have 63 deaths from the virus. From Saturday through Monday, Delaware County reported 24 new cases, 131 active cases, with 2 hospitalized & 122 quarantined, 51.9$ of Delaware County Residents are vaccinated.
The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September 2021. Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State's area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month. To recap last week's statewide press release, New York State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 7.4% in August to 7.1% in September 2021. Locally, Chenango County had 3.8% unemployment, Delaware County 4% & Otsego County 3.9% in September.
17 organizations were awarded grants totaling over $318,000 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York. The successful grant applications were approved through a competitive, volunteer panel and board review process, are for a variety of capital projects, operations, economic development, and programming. The Foundation received 70 applications this year requesting over 1.2 Million dollars. More information about the Foundation can be found on its website at donorswhocare.org.
24 year old Elijah Burnside of Binghamton pleaded guilty to 2nd degree manslaughter in Broome County Court Monday, Burnside admitted to driving at a high rate of speed in Binghamton November 21, 2019, & hitting a vehicle driven by 70 year old Ronald Phetphonsy of Binghamton, resulting in his death. Burnside faces sentencing at a later date.

On Saturday, Sidney Police received a complaint of a robbery in progress at the Mirabito convenience store at 1 West Main Street, by a white female wearing a mask over the lower part of her face and a hooded sweatshirt. The employee handed $1,619 to the suspect who then fled the scene. No firearm or weapon was displayed during the incident. On Sunday, the suspect was taken into custody, 28 year old Alicia McAdams of Sidney was charged with 3rd degree Robbery & 4th degree Grand larceny, McAdams was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court, and she was released on her own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 24 year old Elizabeth Crandall of Meredith after Deputies observed a vehicle fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of County Highway 26 and State Highway 10 in Hamden. A check of Crandall’s driver’s license revealed that her driving privileges were suspended for failure to answer a summons out of the Town of Franklin Court. Crandall was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, and Operating a motor Vehicle with an Obstructed View, she was released on and directed to appear at the Hamden Town Court on a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a one car Motor Vehicle Accident on Prospect Ave in the Village of Walton on October 17th. 31-year-old James Young of Walton was traveling north on Prospect Avenue when his vehicle exited the roadway and impacted a section of guidewire, Young’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and drugs at the time of the collision. Young was charged with Failure Maintain Lane, Speed Not Reasonable and Prudent, Driving while Intoxicated, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, and Aggravated Leandra’s Law DWI for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs with a child less than 15 years of age in the vehicle. Young was released with tickets returnable to the Village of Walton Court at a later date.

The State has invested a total of $287 million to complete the 13-acre Health Sciences Campus, which includes Decker College, More than 130 faculty and staff are employed, with more than 700 students.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies and State Police bomb detection canine responded to the Robert W. Harrold BOCES campus Tuesday afternoon, following the discovery of bomb threat, the investigation revealed no evidence of an explosive device. The Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a 16-year-old male student from the Unatego school district for Falsely Reporting an Incident, he was arraigned in the Town of Meredith Court and he was released pending future court action.
Governor Cuomo today announced the expansion of mobile addiction treatment and transportation services in New York. More than 20 vehicles have now been purchased by nine providers across the state, with more expected to be purchased in the coming months. More than $1.6 million has been made available for providers to purchase vehicles through this initiative. Locally, Addiction Center of Broome County will recieve 2 vans which will be outfitted for telepractice purposes.
The Sidney Central School District conducted a Lockdown/ Lockout drill this afternoon, in conjunctions with area Law Enforcement Agencies, Sidney Superintendent Bill Christensen explains:

State Senator Jim Seward introduced legislation to increase criminal penalties for individuals who cause a fire or explosion while manufacturing illegal drugs. This legislation was crafted in the wake of a fatal fire that claimed the life of a Homer man in 2016. The legislation was crafted after Homer Police Chief Robert Pitman and Cortland County District Attorney Patrick Perfetti pointed out loopholes in the current law regarding drug related fires following a tragic event in Homer. Senator Seward's bill has been referred to the Senate Codes Committee.
The tractor trailer bans that were placed on several highways area Interstates have been lifted last night, as the Winter Storm moved further east than anticipated. Currently, over 154,000 utility customers are without power in the Hudson Valley & downstate, Governor Cuomo also doubled National Guard's deployment of troops to 400 to assist wellness checks on residents and other response and recovery efforts.
State Police arrested 19 year old Jacob Sprague of Worchester for felony Grand Larceny, Sprague allegedly took a credit card that was not his and spent over $747. Troopers located Sprague in the town of Westford and arrested him, he was released on an appearance ticket and scheduled to appear in town of Westford Court on March 20th.
State Police arrested 48 year old James McAdams of Otego for Criminal Mischief, Troopers were called to the Crossroads Inn in the town of Otego for a dispute, McAdams allegedly broken items in a room at the Inn, he was arrested and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond. He is to appear at the town of Otego Court on March 15th.
