The Chenango County Historical Society was recently awarded a donation by the Stewart’s Holiday Match program totaling $1,250, to support activities designed to share local history with children and families. Chenango County Historical Society collaborates with other community organizations to develop program offerings, including the Afton Arts & Crafts Festival, Colorscape Chenango, Chenango County Open Farm Day, Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport Day and the YMCA Healthy Kids Day, among many others.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that airports across the State will receive approximately $49 million for strategic infrastructure enhancements that will enhance safety, facilitate innovation, leverage existing resources, advance business development, and promote sustainability and resiliency. The National Transportation Safety Board released information regarding the crash of a single engine Cessna Airplane on May 28th in the town of Plymouth at about 2:50 PM, the pilot, Shawn McMahon of Binghamton, was fatally injured. The plane flew 2 separate sky diving flights that day, a co-owner of the airplane reported that following the 2nd flight, McMahon determined that he had 40 gallons of fuel. During the accident flight, McMahon announced that the skydivers were away & he was descending rapidly, a follow up announcement was unintelligible. 1 eyewitness told investigators that an airplane flew near her house very low, with the engine sputtering & the pilot attempted to start the engine unsuccessfully & she heard the impact, another eyewitness heard the engine shut off earlier when the skydivers jumped, the engine restarted and the plane continued. The investigation is continuing.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office reported that Shawn McMahon of Binghamton was the pilot & only occupant of a plane that crashed Sunday in Norwich. The National Transportation Safety Board said that the Cessna 182D plane crashed just before 3:00 PM Sunday about 1 mile west of the Eaton Airport, he had taken off from the airport and was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash. The investigation has been opened by the NTSB and the FAA.

State Police were called Tuesday afternoon to Castle Creek Road in the town of Chenango for a report of a car versus motorcycle fatal accident. The preliminary investigation determined that 31 year old Joseph Portorsnok of Binghamton, was turning left onto Castle Creek Road when he entered the path of a motorcycle, driven by 20 year old Kaitlynn Eaton of Castle Creek, who collided into Portorsnok. Police said that Eaton died at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

In the Southern Tier; $1.5 million toward installation of energy efficient lighting and replacement of the revenue control system at the Greater Binghamton Airport in Broome County. $200,000 will go for energy efficiency Jet Hangar improvements, including high-efficiency heating and LED lighting and general hangar rehabilitation activities at the Lt. State Police arrested 24 year old David Kemp of Eaton for using a fake COVID 19 Vaccination card, after his employer turned him in.  Kemp could face 7 years in prison after being charged with possession of a forged instrument & the unauthorized use of a government agency’s seal on the fake card makes it a federal crime.

State Police have identified the deceased individual shot by a Walton Police Officer as 66 year old Paul Weeden of Walton.  On Monday Morning, an officer from the Walton Police Department was dispatched to a mental health call on Griswold Street, the officer made contact with Weeden, who pointed what was believed to be a gun at the officer, the officer retreated, Weeden followed & ignored multiple commands to drop his weapon, he again pointed the suspected gun at the officer, who fired his weapon and struck Weeden.  The officer called for EMS and rendered emergency aid, Weeden was pronounced dead at the scene.  The investigation is continuing.

Otsego County Health Department reported their 55th death from COVID Thursday. Otsego County had 38 new positive cases, 169 active cases & 5 hospitalized. 35 of their 55 deaths have occurred since January 1st.

This funding was allocated through the Federal Aviation Administration under the Department of Transportation and will serve as a lifeline to local airports struggling to stay afloat after nearly a year of limited operations. Locally, the Albert S Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta, the Sidney Municipal Airport, the Eaton Airport in Norwich & the Tri-Cities Airport in Broome County will get $13,000 each.

A Chenango County man will serve 6 months in prison for burglarizing a US Post Office.  24 year old Jeremy Cook of Eaton admitted that on August 12th, 2019, he broke into the Eaton Post Office with the intent to steal money; he attempted to break into a safe and then fled without taking any money.  Cook was also sentenced in Federal Court to 3 years parole after serving the 6 months prison term.

syringe drop box near the Eaton Center in downtown Norwich.  Police began the investigation following a
post of the broken dropbox with needles on the ground, on social media
Monday.  So far, no arrests have been
