P.M. NEWS MONDAY 3-16-26

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 4 Count Indictment against 36 year old William Weil of Bainbridge last week. Weil was indicted for Aggravated DWI, Felony DWI & Endangering the welfare of a child, for allegedly driving intoxicated with a child in his vehicle in Delhi on January 22nd, the DWI is a felony as Weil was convicted of DWI within the last 10 years. Weil faces action on the indictments shortly.

Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced an expansion of child care services at 11 SUNY community colleges in New York State. The services will include evenings and weekends, designed to align with the schedules of student-parents who are enrolled in high-demand programs. SUNY Broome is one of the Colleges participating in the program.

The federal trial of Peyton Gendron of Conklin will be held in Buffalo, Judge Lawrence Vilardo made the ruling last week. Gendron's attorneys were seeking to move the trial, out of Buffalo, citing concerns over the ability to get a fair trial. Gendron shot 10 Black people shopping at a Buffalo Tops Supermarket on May 14, 2022, he has already been convicted on state charges, he faces the death penalty on Federal charges, the next trial should start this summer.

Commerce Chenango and the Chenango Foundation announced that the 3rd annual Chenango Women’s Leadership Conference at DCMO BOCES Campus in Norwich will be held today. The event is expected to be well attended again this year.

About 12 area Musical Acts will perform a benefit concert in Sidney for Steve Eisenberg, a Bainbridge area musician who is battling Cancer. The event is called the "Stoop-fest For Steve" local musician Jo Jo Russell told WCDO News about the event:

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced a 7 count indictment against 46 year old Arthur Cotten of Sidney. Sidney Police responded July 19th to a domestic dispute, where Cotten is accused of damaging a property and attempting to set it and responding officers on fire. The Indictment charges Cotten with Attempted Arson, Attempted Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Possession of Dangerous Weapon, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Justice & Menacing.

Mohawk Valley Gives, an annual one-day on-line fundraiser, returns on September 19, 2025, Hosted locally by the Community Foundation of Otsego County, Mohawk Valley Gives this year will provide more than 80 participating Otsego County nonprofits a fundraising opportunity by using a secure online platform. The State DOT announced that I-88 westbound will be closed near Exit 8 in Bainbridge for pavement repairs, today from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Drivers should follow the posted detours, utilizing the off-ramp at Exit 8, then crossing State Route 206 to the ensuing on-ramp, back onto Interstate 88 westbound. Flaggers will be stationed at the intersection to control traffic.

The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton’s Board of Education announced that they have offered Heather Wilcox the position of Superintendent, at Monday night’s community forum presentations at the GMU Auditorium. Wilcox is a Gilbertsville native and GMU graduate who has spent the last 13 years with the school district, Pending the successful negotiation of a contract, the Board of Education will appoint Wilcox as GMU’s next superintendent during an upcoming Board meeting. Her anticipated start date is August 1st, 1 day after Annette Hammond is set to retire as GMU’s superintendent.

Fresh off of the 1st anniversary of the new Emergency Room & Walk In Center at Chenango Memorial Hospital, came word that the Hospital would get 20 Million Dollars for future projects that had been planning, according to Melissa Stagnaro, who is the Executive Director of the Chenango Memorial Hospital Foundation:

Stagnaro said that they will not have to kick off another fundraising campaign for the 2nd Phase of their projects, with the receiving of this Grant money at this time. Phase 2 is expected to take about 5 years to complete.

Bainbridge Firefighters responded to a fire at 9 East Main Street Sunday morning. Occupants escaped without injuries, Fire fighters from Sidney, Afton, Masonville, Unadilla, Guilford, & Mt Upton also responded, Bainbridge Fire Fighters have returned for rekindles yesterday & again this morning, the fire is believed to have started in a garage and spread to the nearby residence.

The Department of Agriculture and Markets has been awarded over $3.8 million from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to help New York seniors better access locally grown food. The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, to modernize and expand the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program at farmers' markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs, more information is available at agriculture.ny.gov/farmersmarkets.

Sidney Federal Credit Union has partnered with the National Forest Foundation to plant a tree for every new member and business account enrolled at the credit union in 2023, spokesman Andrew Smith explains:

Smith said that Membership currently stands more than 65,000 strong and assets total more than $800 million, that is expected to grow with the expansion into new markets around the state in the coming years.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli oversees more than 46 million unclaimed funds accounts valued at $17.5 billion. Governor Kathy Hochul will present the Executive Budget Proposal at the Capitol at 12:00 Noon today. The budget will be turned over to the legislature for consideration ,they have until April 1st to get it passed.

Several Fire Companies were assisting Bainbridge this morning for a structure fire at State route 206 and Butts Road. that was called in at about 4:00 AM. WCDO news will have more details as they become available.

The Community Arts Network will bring back the City of the Hills Art Festival, on Saturday, from 12:00 Noon into the night hours. The Greater Oneonta Historical Society opens their latest exhibit today; entitled "Town & Gown: SUNY Oneonta and the Local Community, Past and Present" The exhibit is located at the Oneonta History Center’s at 183 Main Street, the exhibit will be on display until November 12th.

The Bainbridge-Guilford Board of Education voted to honor former soccer coach and technology teacher, Peter Feltham, by naming the soccer field after him, BG Superintendent Tim Ryan said that there will be a dedication tonight to the coach, and he expects a large turnout:

Attorney General Letitia James distributed the 1st round of payments from the opioid settlements to the Southern Tier. In 2022, the Southern Tier will receive a total of $4.8 million, from the $1.5 billion settlement Attorney General James secured with the manufacturers and distributors of opioids for prevention efforts. Later this year, the Southern Tier will receive additional payments from the settlements with Endo Health Solutions, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Allergan. Locally Broome County receives $1.6 Million dollars, Chenango County, $308,000, Delaware County: $327,000.

The Board of Trustees of Hartwick College announced today that they have selected Darren Reisberg, executive vice president and chief strategy officer at the Joyce Foundation, as the College’s 11th president, he will take office on August 1, replacing Dr. Margaret Drugovich, who announced her retirement earlier this after serving as Hartwick College President for 14 years.

Helios Care of Oneonta was selected as a Silver Winner in The John A. Hartford Foundation Tipping Point Challenge, a national competition focused on the submission of initiatives that have made positive, breakthrough change in the care of those with serious illnesses, CEO Dan Ayres comments:

Governor Hochul announced that over 40 New Vaccine & Booster Pop up sites will be up & running this week around the state. The State Health Department & the Governor's Office are partnering with local health departments and community partners to launch more sites over the coming weeks. Sites are expected to be announced for the tri county area shortly, as this region has among the lowest vaccination rates in the state. Current Vaccine sites can be found at vaccines.gov/search.

Rural Health Network of South Central New York’s Getthere Call Center seeks volunteer drivers for a new program in the City of Norwich: Community Rides, starting December 29th. Volunteer drivers will provide local rides to healthcare, food, prescriptions, events, and other community locations on Wednesdays from 9 AM to 3 PM, for seniors and others in need, those who want to sign up as a volunteer driver, should call 1-855-373-4040.

State Police have arrested 46 year old Charles Richter of Bainbridge, who was wanted in connection with an assault during a domestic dispute in Bainbridge. The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wilson Hospital for treatment, Richter has been charged with Attempted Murder, 1st degree Assault, Criminal Contempt, Unlawful Imprisonment.

The 27th annual "Pit Run" will be held virtually this year, as COVID guidelines prohibits large gatherings like the Pit Run normally attracts.  Race Committee Member Rob Lishansky told WCDO News how the race will work:

Otsego Now established a State Disaster Emergency Grant Program for Otsego County, with financial assistance from the Community Foundation of Otsego County and the Cooperstown Foundation. Small businesses and not-for-profit corporations with fewer than 50 employees are eligible for grants up to $500 for the purpose of acquiring personal protective equipment or installing fixtures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, More information is available otsegonow.com.

Over $64,000 has been awarded to Nonprofits by the Community
Foundation for South Central New York, for Capital Projects, Programs and
Operating Support.  Locally grants were
awarded to A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Crime Victims Assistance
Program Chenango Child Advocacy Center & the Valleyview Elementary School
$984 for a kindergarten alternative seating program helping students with
special needs maintain focus in the classroom

The Bainbridge-Guilford Central School will hold a Board of
Education Meeting today in the District Conference Room at the Jr-Sr High

State
Police arrested 64 year old Norman Fletcher of Bainbridge for Driving While
Ability Impaired by Drugs & Failure to Keep Right.  Troopers, who were leaving the Sidney
headquarters after training, observed Fletcher driving on State Route 7 in the
town of Unadilla failing to keep right, Fletcher was processed and was released
on appearance tickets to the town of Unadilla court on August 12th.

The
Community Foundation for South Central New York announced a new mini-grant
opportunity for qualified non-profit organizations in Broome, Tioga, Chenango,
Delaware and Otsego counties.   Proposals
may be submitted for projects that support, develop and/or expand the skill set
of young professionals in our region and/or increase their involvement in the
community.  The deadline for applications
is Friday, September 6th.  Details on

A
new Siena College Poll of registered New York voters found that the majority of
New Yorkers say Governor Cuomo has made the state a better place since he took
office in 2011, the poll also found that his favorability and job performance
ratings currently match record lows.  New
York voters said Cuomo has improved the state by a 51 to 39% margin,  but his favorability ratings of 43% negative
and 50% positive matches his lowest ratings, his job performance rating of 34%
positive and 64% negative is his lowest ever.

The
State Department of Health announced that a proposal for a new Medicaid model
of care serving children throughout the state with complex health needs has
been approved by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The
new model will improve access to Medicaid services and expand Medicaid coverage
to home- and community-based care for more than 6,000 youth under age 21 who
are faced with an array of serious health issues and otherwise could be forced
to live in hospitals and other institutionalized settings.

WIDE GARAGE SALES.

Ed Curley of Sidney continues his bicycle trek across
America to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes research Foundation, the
afternoon Ed was in San Antonio Texas, with the final destination of St.
Augustine Florida, he gave WCDO News an update on his progress:

Curley said that he hopes to raise about $10,000 with this effort;
donations can be made the JDRF.org.

The Chenango County Planning Department, working in
conjunction with Opportunities for Chenango, is slated for a $500,000 Community
Block Grant through the New York State Office of Homes and Community Renewal.
Money will be allocated to income-eligible homeowners in need of making vital
home improvements.  The plan would need
to be approved by the Chenango County Board of Supervisors before the money
could be made available to homeowners.

Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care is hosting a Caregiver Support Group at The AO Fox Hospital Tri-Town Campus in Sidney starting today.  The group will meet 6 times to provide information and support for those who are taking care of seriously ill family members or friends.  Caregivers will have an opportunity to identify concerns, discuss feelings, receive support from others, and locate community resources which may be helpful for their unique situations.  More information is available at 432-5525.

The Afton Village Board of Trustees will be holding a
special budget meeting workshop today, starting at 6:00 PM.  The Workshop will be held at the Bolster
Community Center at 105 Main Street, the main topic will be the water &
sewer budgets for the 2019-202 fiscal year.

The Village of Bainbridge announced that a water main break
occurred earlier today at Prospect & Tyler Street, off of Pearl Street to
Jericho Hill.  Crews had the break
repaired by about 2:30 PM, area residents are advised to let the water run until
clear.

Nearly 30 volunteers shaved their heads at Saturday night’s
Norwich St. Baldrick’s Foundation event. The 15th annual event, held at the
American Legion in Norwich, raised more than $35,000 as part of St. Baldrick’s
mission to fund childhood cancer research.

accepting applications to enrich the cultural life and social well-being of
residents of the village and township of Walton, Applicants will be able to
complete and submit their applications to the Community Foundation on-line. The

Firefighters from Guilford, Oxford, Coventry &
Bainbridge responded to a fire this afternoon at 874 Shapley Road in the town
of Guilford.  The house was fully involved

The Oneonta Common Council will hear a presentation tonight
at their regular 7:00 PM meeting, by representatives of the New York Power
Authority and Guth DeConzo Consulting Engineers concerning a proposal for the
City to acquire all of the more than 1,000 street lights throughout the
community that currently are owned by NYSEG and, after being purchased by the
City, change over the street light system using new LED fixtures.  This proposal is part of the State-sponsored
“Smart Street Light NY” program for greater energy efficiency.

The Capital Region Toys for Tots Foundation today announced its distribution plans for the 2018 holiday season, to deliver thousands of toys and winter coats to children in need throughout Upstate New York. The Toys for Tots Train schedule is December 1st, starting at 10:00 AM at the Binghamton Yard, it will then arrive in Bainbridge at 11:45 AM, then at 1:15 pm at the Gas Avenue Crossing, Oneonta, before heading for Cobleskill & Delanson. The train will continue on Sunday & finish its run in through the Capital region to Rouses Point.

As part of an initiative to be designated as a Clean Energy Community, the City of Oneonta has installed a ChargePoint Level 2 electric vehicle charging station in the Dietz Street parking lot. The Program is a NYSERDA initiative to reward communities for becoming more energy efficient. The charging station is equipped with two ports, allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously. Initially, the City will not apply a fee for drivers to use this EV charging station. However, drivers must be a member of the ChargePoint network. 2 parking spaces, adjacent to the charging station in the Dietz Street Parking Lot, will be reserved for electric vehicles only.

The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce is doing a Toy Drive for Toys for Tots. New unwrapped toys may be dropped off in the barrels that have been placed at Bob's Diner, NBT Bank, SFCU and the Bainbridge Town Hall. The Annual Toys For Tots train is scheduled to stop in Bainbridge on Saturday December 1st at 12:00 Noon.

Because of the forecast, the Family Halloween Celebration at the Sidney Central School District hosted by the Sidney Community Foundation has been moved to the high school gymnasium on Wednesday, October 31. The event runs from 5-7 p.m. The movie will be running from 5-6:30 p.m., with the parade to start at 6:30 p.m. Trick-or-treating is every 15 minutes starting at 5:15 p.m. Some of the activities for the night include: An inflatable obstacle course, Face painting, There is no cost to the event.

Hall said that this year they are raising money for the Bainbridge Community Foundation, which underwrites free concerts in the park through the summer.

The Annual "Regatta Row" display of chairs, tables made from canoe paddles, plus canoe paddles designed by local artists, will be on display starting Saturday, this year's theme is "Scenes of New York, event organizer Nancy Kitchen told WCDO News that the items will be judged, and auctioned off during the regatta this year:

The pieces will be on display along North main Street in Bainbridge for the next few weeks & will be auctioned off on May 24th at under a tent at General Clinton park, prior to this year's Regatta Hall Of fame ceremonies.

Community Foundation for South Central New York announced that they have awarded $5,000 to Organizations in Walton, from the Paul G. and Miriam B. Mattern Fund. After a competitive local selection process, the advisory committee approved 2 grants to the Town of Walton for $2,500 to support the River Edge Trail planning activities, and $2,500 for the Walton Cemetery Association for the repair and maintenance of roads in the cemetery.

Free concert Tuesday will be held at General Clinton Park tonight, sponsored by Bainbridge Community Foundation. Woodshed Prophets will perform at 6:30, the concert is made possible by donations from several local businesses. If it rains it will be held in pavilion.

The next Bainbridge Community Foundation free concert is tonight at General Clinton Park. Uncle Shake will perform starting at 6:30 PM, In the event of rain concert will be held in pavilion.

The Sidney High School and the Tri Town Coalition on Substance Abuse prevention will hold a substance abuse education night on Wednesday march 22nd at 6:00 PM. The 64th Sidney Rotary Pancake Breakfast will be served Saturday at the River Street Fire Station Training Center in Sidney. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM; proceeds will benefit community service projects.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation of Norwich will host a head-shaving event Saturday, at the American Legion, 29 Sheldon Street, Norwich. About 2 dozen people will have their heads shaved in solidarity with children with cancer and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers. The event starts at 6 pm in the banquet hall of the Legion. It is free and the public is invited to attend.
