Chenango County Public Health released their latest COVID 19 statistics today; they report 95 active cases, with 24 cases vaccinated. They have 181 people in quarantine, 7 are hospitalized, 1 is vaccinated, Chenango County has had 3985 cases with 82 deaths & 3724 recoveries since the pandemic began.
The Gilbertsville Mount Upton School District held their Open House & opened up their new Bassett Healthcare Network Health Center & on-campus apparel store Last Night. Among those in attendance were retired State Senator Jim Seward, Current State Senator Peter Oberacker, & Bassett Healthcare Network President and CEO Dr. Tommy Ibrahim. The GMU School district returns for classes on Thursday.
State Police in Troop C announced that they removed 40 impaired drivers from local roadways in the month of August. Troop C encompasses Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins Counties.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 380 total COVID 19 cases reported in the month of August, with 52% were unvaccinated which includes those who had no or 1 vaccines in the 2 shot series, while 48% were fully vaccinated, 100% of hospitalizations are unvaccinated. 9% of the cases in August were in college students/employees; 10% of the cases were 0-11 years old, 27% were 12 to 24 years old, 46% of the cases were in the 25-55 age group & 17% were 56 & older.

Firefighters from several companies responded to the report of a Barn Fire at 723 Hotchkiss Road in Greene Late Sunday Night. Firefighters from Greene, Chenango Forks, Port Crane, Coventry, and Brisben responded, the barn was fully engulfed & was a total loss, and the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Following the United States Department of Agriculture’s announcement that up to $500 million in American Rescue Plan emergency rural health care funding will be newly available, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is encouraging all eligible New York entities to apply ahead of the deadline. Applicants may apply for Impact Grants by October 12th, and Recovery Grants on a continual basis until funds are expended. The Chenango County Public Health announced that with the increase on COVID 19 cases, they are once again releasing their statistics every day. Today they reported 94 active cases, 7 hospitalized with 193 quarantined; they are up over 3700 cases with 80 deaths since the start of the pandemic. This Saturday, a 2nd dose Pfizer COVID vaccination clinic will be held at the old Label Shopper location in the South Plaza in Norwich from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. All healthcare workers in New York State, including staff at hospitals and long-term care facilities including nursing homes, adult care, and other congregate care settings, will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Monday, September 27th. The State Health Department will issue Section 16 Orders and implement a policy mandating employee vaccinations, with limited exceptions for those with religious or medical reasons. To date, 75% of the state's 450,000 hospital workers, 74% of the state's 30,000 adult care facility workers, and 68% of the state's 145,500 nursing home workers have completed their vaccine series. The State reported a 3.6% positive COVID 19 positivity rate Sunday, out of over 99,000 people tested, or 3575 positives, over 1700 are hospitalized, with 362 in an ICU bed & 134 on Ventilators, there were 11 deaths Sunday.

The CDC & Otsego County Department of Health recommend everyone, even those who are fully vaccinated, wear a mask indoors in public to maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others. Since May 1st, there has been 291 cases of COVID-19 reported in Otsego County, 76% are unvaccinated or vaccine status is unknown, 24% are breakthough cases in vaccinated individuals, the overall number of cases in vaccinated individuals remains at less than 1%, 13.4% of the cases are in children 0-11 years of age, 7.9% in 12-17 years of age, 57.3% in 18-55 years of age & 21.3% 56 and older. There have 10 individuals hospitalized since May 1st, all were unvaccinated, Health Officials urge everyone to get vaccinated against COVID 19.

United will pay approximately $14.3 million in restitution to consumers affected by the policies, including $9 million to more than 20,000 New Yorkers with behavioral health conditions who received denials or reductions in reimbursement.

Downtown Norwich continues with the Thursday evening NBT Bank’s free Summer Concert Series. Due to an increased spread of COVID-19, Chenango County is requiring mandatory face masks in all County Buildings and Offices at the start of business on Monday, August 16, 2021. All employees and members of the public (vaccinated and unvaccinated) fall under this requirement. It is also at this time recommended that Chenango County businesses, organizations and schools immediately implement a face mask requirement for their vaccinated and unvaccinated employees, patrons and students.
Otsego County is currently at a SUBSTANTIAL level of community transmission, and is on the verge of becoming HIGH level of community transmission. CDC & Otsego County Department of Health recommends everyone to wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission, to maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others. This week there have been several cases of individuals having a repeat COVID-19 infection. This occurs when someone is infected with COVID-19 and 90 or more days later tests positive again for COVID-19. These repeat infections are mostly occurring in unvaccinated individuals. This reinforces that immunity from natural infection diminishes after 90 days. It is important if you have had COVID-19 and are not vaccinated please consider getting vaccinated to prevent a reinfection. In Otsego County. there are 82 active cases, 19 new cases reported today, with 5 hospitalized, there have been 2614 total cases in 2021.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal motorcycle crash Tuesday night in West Corners at Glendale Drive & Campville Road at 11:44 pm. 42-year-old Jason Krissel of the Town of Union was ejected off of his motorcycle & was pronounced dead, Krissel applied the brakes aggressively at the intersection, after traveling at a high rate of speed. The investigation is continuing.

State Health Department reported that the state Positivity rate for COVID 19 tests on Wednesday was just fewer than 2.5%, out of more than 103,000 tests conducted. hospitalization are back up to 611 state wide, patients in ICU beds was at 126, and those on Ventilators are up to 57, an increase of 19 since the beginning of the week. The Delta variant is what is driving the latest increases, state Health Department officials said that almost all of the COVID deaths now are from that variant, and are not vaccinated. 55.3% of all New Yorkers have completed their vaccine series.

The statewide single-day COVID-19 positivity rate dropped to 0.44% Wednesday, and the 7-day rolling average dropped to 0.60%, & hospitalizations from COVID statewide fell below 1,000 to 970 for the first time since October 21st of last year. There were 245 ICU patients with 143 on ventilators Wednesday, over 128,000 tests were administered with 565 positive tests, and there were 10 COVID attributed deaths. An investigation revealed that 2 people were assaulted with a sharp object resulting in minor injuries; they were taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital & were treated and released. The investigation is on-going and appears to be an isolated incident; Police are looking for 53 year old Jose Gonzalez of Norwich as a person of interest.

On March 23rd, an individual was attacked at around 2:30 PM while walking along the railroad tracks downtown. Nursing homes in New York can allow visitation without having to be COVID-free for 14 days, according to the State Health Department. Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated the nursing home visitation guidance, to allow indoor visitation at all times for all residents, regardless of vaccination status, except in specific circumstances. Under the new guidance, visitation will be temporarily suspended for: Unvaccinated residents, Residents with confirmed COVID-19 infection, & Residents in quarantine, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, until they have met criteria for release from quarantine.

State Police arrested 58 year old Martin Lewicki of Norwich for 3rd degree Burglary & Criminal Mischief. State Police asked for the public’s help in identifying a person who broke into the Balsam Inn in the town of Pharsalia last November, Surveillance video caught the suspect taking neon signs, bar lights, a bar table, bar stools and destroying several items, a tip led investigators to Lewicki, who was arrested, arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail.

Chenango County Correctional Officers discovered an unconscious male inmate in his cell Wednesday. 22 year old Dillin Button was pronounced deceased after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The autopsy ruled his death as a result of a bacterial blood infection of the heart and pneumonia, it was revealed that 2 weeks earlier that Button was diagnosed with a bacterial blood infection and pneumonia at an area hospital & he checked himself out of before receiving complete treatment.

State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Initiative Tuesday, in Otsego & Chenango Counties. All 17 businesses were found to be in compliance in Greene, Oxford, Norwich, Sherburne, & Morris. During the Underage Drinking Detail Initiative retail establishments are checking utilizing a trooper in plain clothes and one or several under aged operative who cannot lie about their age or give a fake date of birth. The state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance announced that all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or "SNAP" will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for March. One person was bitten by the rabid raccoon and has begun Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. Raccoons, foxes, skunks, and bats are considered a primary carrier of the rabies virus in the United States. Bassett Hospital has just announced a two-day clinic this weekend to administer 1,200 doses of anti-COVID vaccines the county Health Department received for people over 65. The Sidney Central School District was notified that a 1st grade, 2nd grade and 8th grade student have tested positive for COVID-19. The State Health department reported that over 180,000 New Yorkers were tested for COVID Sunday, and 3.5% tested positive, the lowest level in 3 months. The number hospitalized has dropped to 6600, the number in ICU beds dropped to 1270, the number of Ventilators was down to 875, there were 103 COVID deaths Sunday from the virus.
State Police arrested 31 year old Kerri Bunnelle of Little Falls for Vehicular Manslaughter, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and Aggravated DWI, following the investigation into an August 4 accident last year old State Route 8 in New Berlin, that killed 43 year old Matthew Fredericks of Herkimer. Police stated that Bunnelle was the driver of a GMC Envoy that crossed over into a Ford Focus head-on driven by Fredericks, who did not survive the crash. Bunnelle’s blood alcohol content was .23% & she also did not possess a valid drivers license. Bunnelle was virtually arraigned in the town of Norwich court and released on her own recognizance. She will appear in the Chenango County Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo announced a proposal to legalize and create a comprehensive system to oversee and regulate cannabis in New York as part of the 2021 State of the State:

Under the Governor's proposal, a new Office of Cannabis Management would be created to oversee the new adult-use program, as well as the State's existing medical and cannabinoid hemp programs, the legalization is expected to generate more than $300 million in tax revenue.
NY State of Health announced today that it is not too late to get health insurance coverage for 2021, even though the December 31 enrollment deadline has passed. The Marketplace is reminding consumers to enroll in a Qualified Health Plan by January 15 for coverage effective February 1.

State health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker today announced that the United Kingdom COVID Variant discovered in an employee of a Saratoga Springs jewelry store was found through Contact Tracing. Dr. Zucker said that an acquaintance of the Employee had been to The United Kingdom recently & passed the virus onto the Saratoga Springs worker, who had NOT traveled abroad. The State Health department continues to see the state's positivity rate on COVID tests over 8% with over 16,600 positives on Tuesday, out of more than 197,000 tests. Hospitalizations continue to climb to 8665, the number in ICU patients is over 1400 and the number on Ventilators is up to 877, 161 died from COVID Tuesday in New York State.
Chenango County Public Health reported 11 new Cases of Covid 19 Today, after reporting 30 new cases yesterday. The number of Active Cases is 185, the number of quarantined in Chenango County decreases slightly to 482, there are 11 hospitalized, they have reported over 1330 cases since last Spring.
Former Andes Town Supervisor Martin Donnelly has passed away. Donnelly served as Andes Supervisor from 1998 to 2015, he was 83.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Aaron Wickham after Deputies observed a motorcycle on State Highway 7 in the Town of Afton with no license plate. Deputies initiated a traffic stop on the motorcycle and a pursuit ensued. Wickham continued through the Village of Afton, he was eventually taken into custody west of Afton. Wickham was charged with Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and several other traffic offenses. Wickham was released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town of Afton Court at a later date.
A Town of Pitcher resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff's Office on an active Arrest Warrant. Deputies arrested 37 year old Joshua Whaley, with assistance from the Broome County Sheriff's Office. Whaley had an active warrant stemming from a Domestic Dispute, he was charged with Aggravated Criminal Contempt, 2nd degree Assault, Criminal Possession of a weapon

A winter storm has dumped between 24 to 40 inches of snow on the Southern tier, closing down schools, government offices & businesses throughout the region. State DOT Officials are asking people to stay off the roads so that Plow trucks can get the roads cleared quickly. Chenango County Public Health reported another 15 positive COVID 19 cases Tuesday, bringing their totals to 754. They have 95 active cases with 6 hospitalizations, 452 are quarantined 640 have recovered & there have been 13 deaths.
