The Sidney Rotary Club will hold their next Membership night

A town of Norwich resident was
arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for 2nd degree Assault.  20 year old Kyle Nowalk was arrested
following an investigation into an incident in the Chenango County Jail for
allegedly caused physical injury to a victim within the detention
facility.  Nowalk will appear in the Town
of Norwich Court at a later date.

A Town of Norwich resident was
arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Aggravated Unlicensed
Operation of a Motor Vehicle.  46 year
old Leon Lamb was arrested following a traffic stop on County Road 32 in the
Town of Norwich, Lamb was allegedly operating a motor vehicle with a suspended
license, and he was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the
Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash bail. Lamb is to appear in
the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

30 year old Lance Beckwith of Norwich was arrested by the
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Promoting Prison Contraband and Criminal
Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Beckwith allegedly possessed dangerous contraband while incarcerated at
the Chenango County Jail, where he was being held on other charges, he will
appear in the Town of Norwich Court when called upon.

33 year old Kevin Begeal of Oxford has been arrested by
Oneonta City Police on Burglary, Grand Larceny & other Charges.  Begeal is accused of breaking into a Chestnut
Street home and stealing two guitars and a television, and he allegedly tried
to sell them to a Norwich Music Store.

International Women’s Day is today, and the Chenango County
Council of the Arts will be hosting a gallery exhibit At the Mareia Brown &

Tomorrow is “World No Tobacco Day”, where the health risks associated with tobacco products are highlighted, in the hope that people will quit smoking, or never start. In 1964, US Surgeon General C. Everett Koop released his landmark report about the health dangers of smoking, but tobacco companies have been resilient in recruiting young people to take up the habit, with the latest dangerous products like “Juul” hitting the market, with fruity flavors, novelty appearances designed to attract youth to nicotine, according to Linda Wegner of “Advancing Tobacco Free Communities”:

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office investigated a reported assault with a weapon, they arrested 45 year old Philip Cuda was arrested. Deputies reported that the victim sustained injuries from a knife and was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital then later transported to Wilson. Cuda was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000.00 cash bail.

Santa will be appearing in Unadilla Saturday, with events starting at 9:00 AM with a Breakfast at the Methodist Church followed by Classic Christmas Movies at the Library. At 1:00 pm, The Parade line up on Sperry Street, at 1:30 pm, Santa arrives by Fire Truck at Community Center to meet with area children. Other Activities planned include Musical Performances by Unatego High School Band, & the Unadilla Rotary Club Basket Raffles. A Chenango County Free Rabies Clinic will be held Saturday in Norwich. The clinic will be held at the Norwich Fire Station at 31 East Main Street from 9:30 to 11:00 AM Saturday.

Norwich Police arrested 55-year-old John Stacy of Norwich for Possessing Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child & Failure to register as a Sex Offender. Stacy is accused of possessing pornographic materials containing children under the age of 16 & failing to notify authorities of his social media accounts within the required 10 day period for registered Level 2 sex offenders. Stacy was arraigned in Norwich City Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $50.000 cash bail pending court action on September 19th.

Chenango County Sheriff's Department arrested 18 year old Samantha Clipston of Norwich for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. Clipston was arraigned in the City of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail. The arrest is the result of an ongoing investigation into the sale and possession of Heroin in the City of Norwich. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the City of Norwich Police Department.

James Brower & Tobias Rundstrom-Wooding were indicted by a Chenango County Grand Jury Wednesday. The 2 are accused of raping & killing 11-year-old Jacelyn O'Connor on July 30th in their Town of Norwich trailer; they will be arraigned on the Grand Jury Charges next week.

The Sidney Rotary Club announced that Sidney Central School District Superintendent Bill Christensen will be presenting a program to Rotary Friday at St. Luke's Church, regarding updates at the District. Commerce Chenango will hold their "End of Summer" Soiree in the Park sponsored by NBT Bank in the West Park in- downtown Norwich today. The event will begin at 5:00 PM, followed by an Awards ceremony at 6:30 PM.

Rotary District 7170 has received a Rotary Global grant to help with the local fight against heroin & Opioid abuse in 7 local counties, including Chenango, Delaware Otsego & Broome Counties. District Grant Committee Chairperson Lana Rouff told WCDO News what the money would be used for:

Rouff said that the money will also be used of an Internet program to target those who may be using Opioids and get them the help they need.

Today is the last day to sign up for free income tax preparation in Chenango County through the Colgate University Volunteer income tax assistance program. Residents who earned less than $54,000 may be eligible to participate, more information, can be made through Cornell Cooperative Extension at 99 Broad Street in Norwich, at 334-5841. The deadline to file state & federal income taxes is Tuesday April 18th this year.

The 64th Sidney Rotary Pancake Breakfast will be served Saturday at the River Street Fire Station Training Center in Sidney. Breakfast will be served from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM; proceeds will benefit community service projects.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation of Norwich will host a head-shaving event Saturday, at the American Legion, 29 Sheldon Street, Norwich. About 2 dozen people will have their heads shaved in solidarity with children with cancer and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers. The event starts at 6 pm in the banquet hall of the Legion. It is free and the public is invited to attend.

The 2 organizations have teamed up to increase activity for the Annual Christmas with Santa in Unadilla in the village tomorrow.

Norwich City Police have identified the victim of a shooting as 19-year-old Roxanne Shipman of Norwich on Thursday. Police responded to the report of a shooting Thursday at Division Street shortly after 6:00 PM, Shipman was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries. The Norwich Police Department and the State Police Forensic Investigation Unit are investigating; preliminary reports suggest that the shooting could have been accidental.

Fire fighters from New Berlin, Norwich North Norwich Sherburne, Edmeston Garrettsville & Mount Upton responded to a fire at the Ken Tuttle Jr. farm on Balcom road early Wednesday morning. Fire investigators believe that the fire started due to an electrical short. Livestock was removed, no injurious were reported.

The Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross and Preferred Mutual will be hosting a Home Fire Preparedness canvassing event in Norwich. American Red Cross staff and Preferred Mutual volunteers will be visiting residents on Conkey Avenue, Sheldon Street, and Canasawacta Street, installing free smoke detectors for those homes in need. The American Red Cross continues to hold more blood drives locally. today, a blood drive will be held in Norwich from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Guernsey Memorial Library, & in Delhi from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3 Delview Extension. A blood drive will be held in Sidney Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the First Congregational Church, at Bridge and Main Streets. State Police CNET along with State Troopers & Norwich Police executed a search warrant following an investigation into Heroin sales in the Norwich area. 54 year old Antonio Totten of Norwich was found to be in possession of crack cocaine, $1803. in cash, wax envelopes containing heroin, brass knuckles, marijuana, and 2 cell phones. Totten was charged with 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Totten was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $100,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.

State lawmakers & law enforcement agencies are all looking into ways to deal with the growing heroin epidemic. Sidney Police Chief Mike Hood comments:

Chief Hood participated in the Sidney Rotary club's recent Heroin Awareness Night at the Sidney High School. Police Departments in Cooperstown & Oxford are participating in programs with an emphasis on helping heroin addicts get help to kick the habit.

Norwich Fire Department Investigators reported that a smoldering piece of particle board between sidewalk concrete and a metal hatchway in front of McNeil’s Jewelers are to blame in this morning's South Broad Street smoke investigation. The cause of the smoke has not yet been determined; Firefighters were able to pinpoint the smoke source before flames occurred. All business are open, they were unaffected.

On Friday night, State Police responded to fatal motor vehicle collision, on State Route 12, in the Town of Norwich. 77 year old Robert Gibbs exited his residence and entered the roadway, into the path of a northbound vehicle, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the vehicle was not ticketed. The investigation is continuing.

State Police arrested 62-year-old Jeffrey Kennedy of Eaton, for aggravated DWI with a B.A.C. result of .21% and other traffic violations. The arrest occurred after Kennedy was observed failing to keep right on State Route 12 in the Town of North Norwich. Kennedy was issued tickets returnable to the Town of North Norwich Court on September 23rd

Thursday's Primary Day elections have been tabulated, In Delaware County; The Democratic Party Town of Middletown Supervisor Primary was won by Marjorie Miller. The Republican Party Primary had Delaware County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jim Eisel winning for the Harpersfield Town Supervisors position. In the Primary for Town of Walton Supervisor, Charles Gregory defeats Bruce Dolph. In Chenango County, District Attorney Joe McBride wins the Republican primary, in the city of Norwich; Christine Carnrike won The Republican Primary for Mayor over incumbent Joe Mauirano.

The Norwich Fire Department reported that Route 12 just south of the City was completely shut down due to a hazard chemical spill earlier this afternoon. The highway had to be closed for several hours for the investigation & clean up; Businesses in area of Price Chopper Plaza have not been accessible since the spill. The Chenango Arts Council announced the acceptance of Request for Proposals from New York State artists for exhibition in the Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries, located in CAC facilities at 27 West Main Street, Norwich. The proposal deadline is January 6th, 2016, with a jurying process occurring mid-January for exhibition in the following year. There is no fee for submission, and CAC staff is available for technical assistance with the application process. Also, the Arts Council, the Norwich Business Improvement District and the Norwich Rotary Club, announced a “Call for Artists” for the Chenango Public Arts Initiative for this fall, Artists of all mediums are encouraged to submit applications by August 14 for a September 11th opening. State Police at Norwich arrested 22-year-old Michael Verry of Greene for 3rd degree Assault, after Troopers responded to a Chenango County 911 report of a dispute at a residence on Crestmont Drive in the Village of Greene. Verry is accused of punching a female victim in the face, causing a jaw injury. Verry was arraigned in the Village of Greene Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of a $5,000.00 cash bail. The court issued an order of protection against him.

The Chenango Arts Council, Norwich Business Improvement District, and the Norwich Rotary Club announced that the Chenango Public Arts Initiative, Summer 2015 has been created to bring the arts to the public in everyday life. The Public Arts Initiative will showcase local talent and give artists exposure, be placing their artwork on display in the Chenango Arts Council’s Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries from June 26 to August 28th. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm.

The South New Berlin Fire Department responded to a house fire on State Highway 23, at around 4:00 this morning. Fire fighters from Morris, New Berlin, Norwich & Mount Upton assisted South New Berlin firefighters at the scene.   Firefighters remained on the scene into the late morning hours, more details are expected to be released after investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.

Congressman Chris Gibson has authored “ The Vector-Borne Disease Research Transparency and Accountability Act of 2014” to update guidelines on treating tick borne illnesses, which will lead to insurance companies paying for treatments:

Gibson said that early indications are that the bill has support in both houses of congress & in the White House.   Gibson was in Sidney today to speak to the Sidney Rotary Club.

State Senator Jim Seward will be in Delaware County today for the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Sidney.  Seward will highlight his top priorities for the new legislative session, the meeting will begin at 12:00 Noon at Saint Lukes Church at 139 West Main Street in Sidney.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich is expanding hours for UHS Primary Care, after taking on new primary care providers. A Saturday morning convenience clinic is expected to open January 18th at 4 Newton Avenue in Norwich, with hours from 9:00 AM to Noon. The clinic will serve both pediatric and adult patients by appointment. UHS Primary Care practices will also expand office hours in some locations to allow earlier morning and later evening appointments.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office completed an investigation in the Town of Oxford where a subject who could not legally possess a shotgun, sold 1 to another subject who could not legally possess a shotgun.  Charged were 34-year-old Nadine Button for making a false written statement, she was released pending a future court appearance in City of Norwich Court.  Also charged, 18 year old Austin Demuth for 4th degree criminal possession of a weapon, he was located in the town of Colesville and arraigned in the Town of Oxford Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $500 cash bail pending future court action.  32-year-old Eric carpenter was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, He was arraigned in The Town of Norwich Court; He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5000 bail and order to reappear in the Town of Oxford Court at later date.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Talon Taltavall of Hamilton, on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Town of Sherburne Court, for a violation of probation or conditional discharge.   Taltavall was arrested in the Town of Norwich; he was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $1,000.00 cash bail. Taltavall is scheduled to appear back in the Town of Sherburne Court at a later date.

The Norwich Rotary club is seeking additional members at their event this afternoon from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Canasawacta Country Club the event is free to member of Commerce Chenango.

The CHENANGO COUNTY COUNCIL OF THE ARTS is currently looking for area artists who would like to submit their work to Fourth Friday's in downtown Norwich.  Every Fourth Friday of the month local downtown merchants place artwork in their storefront windows as part if the monthly event. The event includes an art walk starting at 5 PM followed by a gallery opening with live music and food at The Artists' Palette in Norwich.  More information is available at 244-1445.
