Vestal Police responded to a fatal accident on State Route 17 eastbound between exits 66 & 67 at about 4:00 AM this morning, involving a Tractor-trailer truck. Traffic was detoured to Route 434 or route 17C eastbound, as the highway was closed for clean up & accident reconstruction. More details are expected to be released shortly.
Area Assemblyman Cliff Crouch announced that he will seek re-election to the assembly this year. Crouch represents the 122nd district; he was first elected to the assembly in 1995.
4 Most Valuable Player Awards. 2 Cy Youngs, 22 Gold Glove Awards, 42 All-Star Game selections and 6 bronze plaques at the Hall of fame in Cooperstown, that's the resume of those participating in the Hall of Fame classic at Doubleday field tomorrow. Hall of Famers Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Fergie Jenkins, Phil Niekro, Jim Rice and Ryne Sandberg lead the list of names participating in the Classic, names of former players familiar to New York Baseball fans playing includes: LaTroy Hawkins, Andruw Jones, Melvin Mora, Darren Oliver, Todd Pratt, J.J. Putz, & Desi Relaford.
Broome County Executive Debbie Preston faces a challenge for that position on Election Day, as former Broome County Legislator, Democrat Jason Garnar announced he is seeking the County's top legislative position.
There will be plenty of entertainment at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge this weekend as part of the annual canoe Regatta. Chairman John Harmon explains:

Harmon said that WBNG TV will be broadcasting their nightly news casts tonight from General Clinton Park, On Sunday, there will be a full line up of Musical acts participating in the Dundee Ales & Lagers Music festival, headlined by Whitney Point native Kobi Oakley.
The Delaware County Board of Elections announced that Friday June 3rd is the last day to register for the June 28th Federal Primary Election. Primaries will be held for democrats & Republicans in the 19th Congressional District race. Also, the Town of Tompkins poll site has changed, all Tompkins voters will vote at the Tompkins Town Hall at 148 Bridge Street in Trout Creek. Registration forms and applications for absentee ballots may be found online at co.delaware.ny.us/departments, by calling 832-5321 or at the County office in Delhi.
Hundreds of antique & muscle car owners & enthusiasts will be in Norwich this weekend, for the annual 2-day Rolling Antiquers car show at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Muscle cars will be featured on Sunday; antique & classic cars will be featured on Monday. More information is available at raocc.org.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department reported that 42 year old Scott Gross of Windsor was killed when a tractor trailer hit his disabled Jeep on Route 17 in Windsor, early Thursday morning. Gross suffered traumatic injuries and died at the scene, after his vehicle was hit from behind by a tractor trailer driven by 42 year old Anthony Baker of Solvay, at about 1:30 AM Thursday, both vehicles went over an embankment. Baker was taken to Wilson Hospital for head injuries, he was released, and no tickets were issued.
State Police and local law enforcement statewide will be increasing patrols to combat drunk and impaired driving this Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and police will be out in force to remove impaired and reckless drivers from our highways. The initiative starts today and runs until Monday. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols by State Police and local law enforcement agencies during this holiday weekend.
The Sidney Veteran’s Memorial Park Association will hold their dedication ceremony for the Sidney Veterans Memorial Park tomorrow, Association Spokesman Dane Woytek comments:

Woytek said that Congressman Chris Gibson, Assemblyman Cliff Crouch & Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak will make remarks at the dedication Saturday.
Governor Cuomo announced that road and bridge construction projects on State highways will be suspended now through 6:00 AM Tuesday, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. Travelers are reminded to call 511 or by access 511ny.org to check road conditions.

Chenango County area fire departments responded to a barn fire on Newton Road in Pharsalia just after 4:00 PM yesterday At Balsam View Dairy Farm. Fire fighters from Pharsalia, McDonough, and McGraw responded, no injuries were reported, but several cows were killed in the blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Town of Unadilla Highway Department announced that they will be paving Ben McCumber Road Today. The paving project will start at 6:30 AM and is expected to be completed at around 4:30 PM.
Delaware County Emergency Services has been notified that many residents in the hamlet of Bloomville and the immediate surrounding area in the Town of Kortright who have landline phone service through Verizon have been without phone service for an extended period of time, which includes the inability to dial 911 in the event of an emergency. Delaware County Public Health is offering free one day training today from 8:30am-3:00 PM at SUNY Delhi, for therapists, parents, and educators. The morning session “Get Your Game On!” explores the power for play-based instruction through the implementation of cooperative learning games and identify the developmental benefits for individuals. The afternoon session titled Sensational Sensory Experiences-Enhancing Learning Opportunities through Sensory Play, to recognize the benefits of intentionally creating sensory experiences for individuals with sensory needs. Each session has includes “make and takes”, all supplies are provided.

Broome County Sheriff’s department reported that 1 person was killed when a disabled Jeep was struck by a tractor-trailer at 1:30 this morning on state Route 17 near Windsor. Deputies reported that a disabled Jeep stopped in the right lane of the highway was rear-ended by a tractor trailer, the Jeep & the tractor Trailer both went over an embankment. The Jeep's driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the identity of the driver has not been released pending family notification. The tractor trailer driver suffered head injuries and was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital, the investigation is continuing.
Convicted Murderer 46 year old David Dart has been denied parole, Dart was convicted in Otsego County Court of fatally stabbing Gillian Gibbons of Milford in 1989 her body was found in her car in the lower level of the Oneonta Municipal Parking Garage. Dart will continue to serve a prison term of 25 years to life.
Oneonta Police arrested two residents on burglary & grand larceny charges. 44-year-old Courtney Griffin & 54 year old Joanne Roberts of Oneonta allegedly broke into a college student's apartment on Main Street & stole over $3,000 worth of property. The two were charged with the 2nd degree burglary & 3rd degree grand larceny plus criminal mischief, they face court action shortly.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26-year-old Jennifer Hinman of Sidney following a burglary investigation in the town of Sanford. Hinman is accused of unlawfully entering a home & taking property from the home on May 18th. Hinman was charged with 2nd degree burglary, she was arraigned in Fenton town court and released on her own recognizance.

There are only about 3 weeks to go for the current session of the state Legislature, and there seems to be little talk about ethics reforms, even after the convictions & sentencing of recent leaders of both houses. Assemblyman Pete Lopez explains:

The Binghamton Mets announced NYSEG Stadium would go tobacco-free starting in the 2017 season. Inside the gates, fans will no longer be allowed to use cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes nor vaporizers. Tobacco users will have a special smoking area at all games outside the gates of the stadium. The tobacco-free policy will go into effect on Opening Day in April 2017.
The State Economic Development Council announced that Otsego Now has been named a recipient of several 2016 Marketing, Literature and Promotion Awards. The awards will be presented at the Awards Banquet Tonight at the 2016 NYSEDC Annual Meeting in Cooperstown. Otsego Now was honored as Best in Class for its fiscal year 2014 Annual Report, & they received a Certificate of Excellence for its Workforce Training Center brochure, and an Honorable Mention for its web site at www.otsegonow.com.
