Firefighters from Masonville, Sidney, Walton, Trout Creek, Sidney Center, Bainbridge, Deposit & Mount Upton fire companies responded to a fire at the Briggs residence on state route 8 between Sidney & Masonville. The fire was reported at about 8:30 Thursday morning, officials said that the house suffered fire, smoke & water damage, no one was home when the fire broke out, no injuries among firefighters were reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
The state Senate passed legislation to make all honorably discharged military veterans eligible for a high school degree. “Operation Recognition,” already allows veterans of World War II, Korea and the Vietnam wars to get diplomas, the legislation would expand eligibility to other veterans who didn’t complete their formal education. The bill was sent to the Assembly.
Chenango County Sheriffs Deputies arrested 24-year-old Cassandra LaTour and 41-year-old Brett Brooks following an investigation into a reported larceny at a Norwich business. Both were charged with Conspiracy and Petty Larceny for allegedly entering a business with the intent of stealing property. LaTour was also charged with 3rd degree Burglary, Brooks was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date, LaTour was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and will reappear at a later date.
Broome County Executive Debbie Preston will undergo surgery next week at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Preston announced her diagnosis of lung cancer 2 weeks ago, she will go to Sloan Kettering on Sunday and will have the upper left lobe of her lung removed the Monday. She plans on spending much of next week at Sloan Kettering before heading home to recover.
U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will be collecting non-perishable food items tomorrow, as part of the national Stamp Out Hunger program. Food items can be left by mailbox’s for pickup, all donations will stay in local comminutes.
The Chenango Soccer Club is sponsoring a soccer camp August 4th through the 8th at the Chargers Fields on Route 12 in Oxford. Registration must be completed by July 18th to receive the t-shirt. Campers must bring their own lunch, water bottle, cleats, and shin guards everyday. More information is available at 334-5038 or at oneplussoccer.com.
State Troopers will be conducting a child car seat safety check detail tomorrow from 10:00am till 2:00pm, outside the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, Troopers will be stationed in the parking lot near Ruby Tuesday's, they will inspect your current child car seat and making sure that it is properly installed. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to bring their child, a current car seat, their vehicle and vehicle manual.
The Town of Hartwick will hold its annual Clean Sweep event from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday. The Town will be collecting Used electronics, televisions, tires, scrap metal and white goods, used appliances, backyard waste, mattresses, furniture; leaves and grass clippings; and returnable bottles and cans. Regular trash & household Hazardous waste will not be taken at this event.
The Emmanuel Episcopal Church’s Outreach Committee is hosting a chicken and biscuits benefit dinner and Chinese Auction Saturday, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM at the church 37 West Main Street in Norwich. Proceeds will go to the Chenango County Relay For Life July 18th & 19th at the county fairgrounds in Norwich, more information is available at relayforlife.org/chenangocountyny.

Governor Cuomo announced that the Southern Tier Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program would be held tomorrow at 11;00 AM at the Owego-Apalachin Middle school Auditorium in Owego. The program seeks to provide citizens with the tools and resources to prepare for emergencies and disasters, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. State lawmakers passed a bill to boost the availability of the drug naloxone, which reverses heroin overdoses. The bill would allow health care professionals to provide orders for certified training programs and pharmacies, Pharmacists would then be able to issue naloxone kits to anyone at risk of an overdose, or their caretaker, and instruct them on how to administer the drug. Heroin deaths in the state have more than doubled from 215 in 2008 to 478 in 2012. The bill now goes to Governor Cuomo for consideration.
Long time Afton resident, teacher, and area Leader Margery Secrest has died. Secrest served on the BOCES Board of Education, was the President of the Afton School District Board of Education, Vice president of the Chenango County Farm Bureau, as well as serving on Afton Planning Board, the Indian Hills Girls Scout Council, & several other local organizations. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
State Police at Oneonta arrested 27 year old Jeffrey Edwards of Oneonta, for Driving While Intoxicated with a reportable BAC result of .16% and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest was made sfollowing traffic law stop for speeding on State Highway 28 in Oneonta, Edwards was driving with a suspended license, a search of the vehicle uncovered 4 grams of marihuana. Edwards was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Oneonta Court on May 14th. --------------------------------
The annual Big Wheels Golf Tournament will be held at the Delhi College Golf Course today. The event is the main fundraiser for programs and services for Delaware County senior citizens. More information is available at the Delaware County Office for the Aging at 746-6333.
