State Police will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the Fourth of July holiday, through Sunday night. Drivers can expect to encounter sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols, Troopers will also be looking for motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while driving, they should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles when traveling. Last year’s Fourth of July enforcement period, Troopers issued 10,497 total tickets, arrested 210 people for DWI, 258 tickets for distracted driving, 301 tickets for Move Over law violations.
The Nate Lull Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament is held This Sunday at Ouleout Creek Golf Course in Franklin, Lull told WCDO about the latest tournament:

State Police at Binghamton responded to a 2-vehicle crash involving an SUV and motorcycle on Hunt Hill Road in the town of Fenton Thursday. The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator was making a left turn into a driveway, the motorcycle was traveling south when the 2 vehicles collided, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, The operator of the motorcycle did not survive. The SUV operator did not report any injuries. The roadway was closed during the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Tomorrow is is Primary Election day around the State. Democrats will vote statewide for the Comptroller candidate between long time incumbent Tom DiNapoli and challengers Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle. Locally Democrats in the 102nd Assembly District will decide between 3 candidates, Thomas Boomhower, Janet Tweed & Mary Finneran. State Police arrested 56 year old Joel Salinas of Bainbridge following a traffic stop on Chenango County Road 35 last Tuesday. Troopers observed a vehicle committing multiple violations, initiated a traffic stop, Troopers observed a sawed-off shot gun and other illegal weapons, Salinas was driving to sell the shotgun, the investigation resulted in the seizure of several other illegally possessed weapons. Salinas was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Sale of a Firearm, he was processed & transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
Delaware Valley Humane Society reported that Waste Recovery Enterprises donated $2689.79 from the latest Heavy Metal Haul Out campaign. The Next drive will be in September, where people can leave scrap metal at a bin across from WRE on Valley View Road.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Health Department provided the public with the latest update on the outbreak of Salmonella that hit the Broome County Correctional Facility. After 11 days, operations at Broome County Correctional Facility have largely returned to normal, Over 120 IV hydration treatments were conducted, 10 individuals were hospitalized, 8 have returned from the hospital, with 2 still receiving treatment. Broome County Health Department showed a positive result for Salmonella in sample of a chicken salad meal served on May 24th, no other meals have tested positive. The Health Department identified multiple violations related to food preparation and storage that could have led to the outbreak. Several of the violations identified are repeat violations that have previously been cited to the food vendor, particularly those involving the cooling of food, The Health Department found no issues with water quality at the Correctional Facility.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Anthony Alessi of Walton for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Criminal possession of a controlled substance, following a traffic stop at a check point in Town of Colchester,  Alessi is accused of being impaired & was found to possess cocaine, he was processed and was released on appearance tickets for Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

The State DOT posted an update this afternoon, stating that I-88 is closed for a 9.5-mile stretch between Exits 10 and 12 in both directions, with a detour along State Route 7 currently in place. State Police noticed atypical erosion along the highway embankment that could potentially compromise the safety of the road. Out of an abundance of caution, the highway was closed Tuesday, Engineers are exploring the cause of this erosion, and a contractor is mobilizing in anticipation of emergency repairs along the road. The highway will continue to be closed until our engineers deem it safe to reopen.
According to the latest Sienna Research Institute poll, Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul leads the Republican nominee, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman by a 47 to 34% margin among eligible New York Voters, the previous poll had Hochul leading by a 51 to 31% margin.
The Masonville Town Board announced that tonight's meeting has been re-scheduled, their next meeting will be held on Wednesday April 8th at 7:30 PM.

The Unadilla Fire Department announced an update on the I-88 Closure between Exit 10 and Exit 12. I-88 is currently closed westbound at Exit 12, to Exit 10, also the Route 357 bridge over the Susquehanna River is closed at this time, due to tractor trailers being unable to safely navigate the detour turn on to State Route 7. Motorists are urged to allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution while traveling along the detour on State Route 7.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Anthony Lynn of Unadilla for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Introducing Dangerous Contraband, following an investigation in to an inmate being in possession of a controlled substance in the Otsego County Correctional Facility. Investigation revealed that while being admitted to the correctional facility on unrelated charges, Lynn was in possession of cocaine, Lynn turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office, he was processed, was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.

GE Aerospace has announced plans to invest over $11 million at their Facilities over the next 3 years, nearly $3 million at the company's site in Chenango County. Company Officials said that the latest investment will go toward upgrading new manufacturing and testing equipment, as well as building improvements. 2026 marks the company's second consecutive $1 billion investment by GE Aerospace, in 17 states & they expect to hire 5,000 workers.
The Chenango County Historical Society was recently awarded a donation by the Stewart’s Holiday Match program totaling $1,250, to support activities designed to share local history with children and families. The State DEC announced that on January 28th, in the Town of New Lisbon, Forest Rangers responded for a search for a missing 70-year-old after her husband called to report her missing. Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputies followed her tracks to Butternut Creek, A Forest Ranger Laymon went to County Route 12, where the road crosses the creek, and spotted the missing subject standing in a cornfield. Otsego County Emergency Medical Services transported the patient to Bassett Hospital.
The latest Sienna Institute Polling has Governor Kathy Hochul holding a commanding lead over Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, 54-28%. Among registered Democrats, Hochul has an overwhelming 64-11% lead over Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado. 6 of the Governors proposals received 58-68% support, including eliminating state income tax on the first $25,000 earned in tips, ensuring immigration enforcement targeting those in the country illegally, cannot occur in sensitive locations such as schools, hospitals, & places of worship, increasing childcare funding & providing $30 million in payments to farmers to offset what Hochul calls rising costs due to tariffs (59-17%).

The DCMO BOCES Board of Education proposed capital building project plan will be voted on today until 8:00 PM, by residents of all of the school districts associated with the Pole Campus in Norwich & the Harrold Campus in Trout Creek, and they will also vote on the purchase of the former Masonville Elementary School to house programs for students. BOCES District Superintendent Michael Rullo told WCDO News of the main reasons for the projects:

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced today that 49 year old Justin Valk of Davenport was found guilty of 2nd degree Murder, Assault, Reckless Endangerment, 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, by a jury in Delaware County Court. The jury found that Valk recklessly caused the death of his wife, Stephanie under circumstances of a depraved indifference, by injecting his wife with multiple doses of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl over a 24-hour period, in their Davenport home in August of 2022. Sentencing is set for March 25th, the Murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison, The drug convictions carry the potential of a consecutive state prison sentence of up to 9 years.
During the latest winter snowstorm, members of the State Police in Troop C responded to a total of 76 weather-related events between Sunday and the early morning hours TODAY. In Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties, there were 5 Property Damage, 1 Personal Injury accident, 14 Disabled Vehicles & in Broome County, there were 13 Property Damage Accident, 2 Personal Injury Accidents & 9 Disabled Vehicles, there were no Fatal accidents reported.
Sidney Central School District announced that class will resume tomorrow at the upk-6 grade building, as the heat has been restored. Students were released early today at 10:30 due to the heat issue.

Governor Kathy Hochul reminds New Yorkers to take advantage of the State’s recently expanded child tax credit, also known as the Empire State Child Credit. The refundable credit can either help offset taxes or be paid out directly to taxpayers as cash back in the form of a refund. Eligible families can now receive up to $1,000 per child under age four and $330 per qualifying child age 4 through 16 years old. Next year, the credit for children ages four through 16 will also increase to up to $500 per child and households with eligible children under age four will still be able to claim up to $1,000 per child. Sidney Police Department responded Friday Afternoon to a report of a male subject pointing a firearm at a female at the Circle Drive Apartment Complex. Officers arrested 21 year old Connor Steidle of South Carolina, a search of the residence resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of cocaine and 2 firearms, including a handgun. Steidle was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, & 3 counts of Menacing. Steidle was transported to Delaware County Central Arraignment, where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 bail. Sidney Police Department was assisted by State Police with this arrest.

Last Wednesday, Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol responded to the latest in a series of reported thefts of returnable cans and bottles from the BSA Troop 152 at Valley Christian Reformed Church in the Town of Chenango. A camera was installed inside the bin, investigators identified the suspect as 69 year old John Dubrava of Chenango Forks, who had previously been arrested in Chenango County in a similar case. Investigators located Dubrava and the vehicle from the thefts at a residence in Chenango Forks, he was charged with 3 Counts of Burglary & Petty Larceny.

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 8 count indictment against 45 year old Glen Merwin of Harpersfield, for Criminal Mischief, 2 Counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child; and 3 counts of Harassment, Criminal Contempt, Merwin is accused of damaging another person's property, acting in a manner endangering children, and ignoring a court order. The allegations stem from incidents in December of 2024.
The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce will hold their next meeting Tuesday, morning at 7:30 am at the back of Bob's Diner. Chamber members are encouraged to attend.

51 year old Lawrence Slater of Norwich pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in Chenango County Court and was sentenced to 5-to-15-years in state prison. Slater had a BAC of twice the legal limit on April 12th, the ensuing crash killed 62-year-old Steven Biviano of Oxford, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Slater was taken to Wilson Hospital where his BAC was .18,
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 64 year old Keith Hansen of Oneonta, following an investigation into a sex offender failing to report an address change to authorities as required by a Sex Offender. Hansen was released from the Otsego County Correctional Facility in March, he did not update his address with the sex offender registry, an arrest warrant issued & Hansen was located in Oneonta by deputies and taken in to custody without incident, he is being held pending arraignment on the latest charges.

48 year old Grady Hunter of Binghamton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in Broome County Court Monday, moments before jury selection was set to begin. Hunter is already serving a 10-year state prison sentence, he will serve an additional 5-year state prison term, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. Hunter's latest plea stems from an incident on July 19, 2024, in Johnson City after a woman reported to police that a male subject had a gun, Hunter fired a round through his ex-girlfriend’s apartment door. Hunter is scheduled to be sentenced on January 29, 2026, his other prison sentence also came from a weapons charge. The 2 state prison sentences will run consecutively, resulting in a total sentence of 15 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of post- release supervision.
The Dick’s Sporting Goods Open announced that Kelsea Ballerini will be performing at En-Joie Golf Course in Endicott on Friday, June 26th next year. Chenango County Health Department reported that a raccoon found along State Highway 80 between Sherburne and Columbus was tested by the Wadsworth Laboratories, and was found to have rabies. The State Attorney General’s Office has filed a lawsuit seeking to permanently ban the owners of Royalty Tobacco in the Price Chopper Plaza on Route 7 in Oneonta from selling vape products in the state. The owners of the business; Eysa Sharhan and Anmed Mozed have previously faced charges of selling vaporized tobacco to underage customers, they shut down their businesses and reopened under new names 3 times, the state Department of Health has levied $195,000 in fines against the illegal smoke shop owners, the latest action could shut them down permanently.

Norwich Police arrested 27 year old Caleb Alexander of Columbus Ohio for Criminal Impersonation following an investigation into an adult who was using foul language and disrespecting staff at the Norwich YMCA. Alexander was using a number of incorrect identifications, detectives learned that Alexander later went to Norwich High School, where he allegedly used a false name, date of birth, and address in an attempt to enroll and gain access to the school. Detectives located Alexander a short time later, and he was taken into custody without incident. Alexander was wanted on a parole/probation warrant from Ohio for robbery and impersonating a police officer. Ohio authorities have confirmed that they intend to extradite Alexander to face those charges. Norwich Police stated that no children were harmed, and the suspect never made it beyond the high school office. Alexander is currently being held pending an extradition hearing in Chenango County Court.
A section of I-81 was closed this afternoon following a Crash and fuel spill southbound at Exit 4 at about 1:00 PM. A multi-vehicle crash has caused a fuel spill on Interstate 81 southbound, at the Exit 12 ramp to Binghamton/Port Dickinson, State Route 7. Jeremiah Raub was found guilty by a Broome County Jury today for 1 count of 2nd-degree murder and 2 counts of 1st-degree arson, in connection with a 2011 Binghamton fire that killed 17 year old Jeffrey Aissa. 6 people escaped the blaze, Aissa died inside the house. The 1st trial for Raub ended when the jury could not reach a verdict, he will be sentenced at a later date in Broome County Court.
A recent report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli examined healthcare professional shortages in 16 rural counties in New York state, including Chenango & Delaware Counties locally, and found shortfalls in primary care, pediatric, and obstetrician and OBGYN doctors, Chenango Memorial Hospital's new President & CEO Cecil Miller told WCDO News how they will try to correct that:

State Police are targeting speeding and aggressive drivers during a special week-long traffic enforcement initiative now underway through this Sunday, as Speeding is a contributing factor in nearly 1/3rd of all fatal crashes in New York State. Last year, Troopers issued 22,476 total traffic tickets, including 11,175 for speeding and 592 for violations of the Move Over law, During this “Speed Week” enforcement period, Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and unmarked vehicles as part of the operation.
The Otsego County Conservation Association is accepting nominations for its 2025 Conservationist of the Year Award, which honors outstanding contributions to environmental protection, preservation, and education in Otsego County. The State Senate approved a bill Monday that would allow terminally ill people die on their own terms, it would allow a person with an incurable illness to be prescribed life-ending drugs if he or she requests the medication and gets approval from 2 physicians, the bill goes to Governor Hochul for approval.
State DOT Crews responded to the report of embankment slide on I-88 westbound near exits 16 and 17. DOT reports that about 60 to 80 feet of unpaved shoulder backup material at the pavement edge has slid into the ditched median, the left lane has been blocked under DOT supervision and will conduct assessments for repairs. The Otsego County Board of Representatives today passed "Oscar's Law" which would create a county animal abuse registry. State Police issued a total of 12,062 tickets statewide during the Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign, that ran from Friday May 23rd to Monday, May 26th. Troopers arrested 245 people for DWI and investigated 774 crashes, with three fatal crashes reported. Locally, Troopers reported 15 DWI arrests, 299 Speeding tickets, 26 Distracted Driving tickets, 126 Seat Belt violations and 31 move over law violators.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies received a complaint last week of property damage in the Town of Walton. Troopers determined that 27 year old Siara Mettler of Walton had unlawfully damaged a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, located at a residence on Beers Brook Road located in the Town of Walton. Mettler was charged with 1 count of Criminal Mischief, was processed & arraigned, an order of protection was issued protecting the victim from further contact. Mettler was released and directed to return to the Town of Walton Court at a later date to answer for the said charge.

Sierra appeared in the Delaware County Court on Friday for arraignment, Bail was set at $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond or $100,000 partially secured bond, he was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility.
The State DMV is warning customers to be aware of the latest phishing scam, where bad actors seek to gain access to personal information by pretending to be from the DMV. This is the latest in a series of text message phishing schemes that DMV has warned New Yorkers to avoid. Previous scams have claimed that E-ZPass accounts were about to be suspended. 45 year old Thomas Stanley of South New Berlin was sentenced in Delaware County Court to 4 years in prison for Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Possession with the Intent to Sell. On April 30th , 2023, Sidney Police conducted a traffic stop with 4 passengers inside, including Thomas Stanley, it was discovered that the driver, Thomas Wright, was the subject of an Order of Protection granted to a separate passenger of the vehicle. The car was impounded and heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine packaged for sale were located. Stanley and Wright were indicted by a Grand Jury for 6 counts of drug- related felonies.
33 year old Charles Larson of Oneonta appeared in Delaware County Court Tuesday and pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated, Larson was sentenced to 3 years of felony probation supervision. On October 20, 2024, Colchester Police observed 2 speeding motorcycles, After conducting a traffic stop, Larson failed the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and he was arrested. On November 14, 2024, the Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 5-count indictment against Larson for the latest DWI, he was previously convicted of DWI within the last ten years, Larson’s license was revoked for 6 months and any vehicle he operates for the next 12 months must have an Ignition Interlock Device installed, if he violates the terms he will be re-sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in state prison.

On March 17, 2024, Erin Hubbell, & 3 other individuals, were arrested after a traffic stop of their vehicle and a search uncovered fentanyl, she pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, as part of her plea bargain she agreed to seek help for drug addiction and refrain from further violations, however, Hubbell was stopped by State Police On January 8th, a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of Cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin & other narcotics, she was arrested & still faces unrelated felony drug charges. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office filed a request to declare her delinquent on the terms of her conditional discharge, leading to the latest sentence.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies will participate in the national enforcement initiative on impaired driving in the week leading up to this year’s Super Bowl. The campaign which runs through Sunday, and targets underage drinking enforcement, along with increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers. During the 2024 Super Bowl weekend campaign, law enforcement officers arrested 262 people for impaired driving and issued 8,388 total tickets.
The latest Sienna College poll shows that 39% of New Yorkers view Governor Kathy Hochul favorably, while 47% do not. New Yorkers did supported 10 proposals from Hochul’s State of the State and her by a 42 to 26% margin, especially the budget plans, free breakfast and lunch for public school students, boosting the child tax credit, and limiting cellphone use at school.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Timothy Melius of Pittsfield following a visit by the Otsego County Probation Department. Melius was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 3 counts of Criminal Contempt for possessing of firearms & ammunition despite having multiple court orders prohibiting him from possessing them. Melius was taken in to custody and transported to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office for processing, he was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Pittsfield Court for the above charges. The defendant was then transported to the Otsego County Probation Department where he was processed on a probation violation and arraigned in the presence of an Otsego County Court magistrate. Following arraignment, the defendant was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await further court proceedings.
